So basically what xbox is saying "oh, you guys think are so sleak to buy an external hard drive that is more cheaper to play your games. Think again! Im gonna make it that you won't be able to. And that you need to buy the expansion ssd that cost more for just 1tb"
No problem. My understanding is that the Expansion Card slot is for a modified CFExpress card. So a m.2 drive won't work as a default storage option. (At least in a consumer friendly fashion anyway!)
I really hate that. They didnt do that when i was using Xbox one S I could just play games right off of the external drive and I did Not have to do any transfers. I hate how you have to do transfers now on the Series S just play the game.
Unfortunately some games require super fast storage to load assets into games among other things. Hard drives just can't get those speeds, and even external SSDs can't get to the speeds either. Some "Durango" games however seemingly don't require super fast storage (for one reason or another) so they can be played. Keep the "scarlets" on your Internal storage and "durangos" on your external storage device.
Sorry, I'm really struggling to understand your explanation. I feel like you were about to say the final bit where you explained your findings then stopped the video. What generations are you saying do what in terms of hdd usage behavior? Note i don't yet own an xbox and am trying to determine if i want one. Please can you confirm something else for me. Can I simply go and buy and install a game such as forza 4 from xbox 360 days on here? Or are you forced to play only via game pass?
Hey Dylan. Thanks for the question. The best way to describe this - Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One* games can ALL be played from external storage. Xbox One is the slight exception, for example some Xbox One games have been updated to Series X|S games for free, but now require to be on Internal storage to play. My complaint here is that you can't choose which version you get. If you are playing on Xbox Series X you get that version, there is no option to pick the Xbox One version. (e.g on PS5 you can pick either the PS4 or PS5 version to install). SOME and I will stress SOME, Xbox Series X|S games can be played from external HDD storage, as described in the video. Not a lot of them, but some of them. This isn't the best solution, but it is the only legitimate one. The reason why this is useful is that if you are playing any of the games from the Xbox Series X|S generation then you could potentially put some of them on your HDD and free up the internal drive. As for your question on games ownership vs Gamepass. If, you wanted to purchase a game from the Microsoft Store to own forever then you can do that. You don't need to subscribe to Gamepass. Some games have since been de-listed, and unfortunately the Forza games have been hit hard by this. To my knowledge Forza Motorsport 4 is not compatible. SOME physical games are, if you owned physical versions of back-compatible games then they will work in your Xbox Series X disc drive. (e.g an original Xbox 360 disc will work in the Series X, it will download the game from the store for free). BUT NOT ALL, check on the Microsoft Store website to confirm. This may sound confusing, especially if you are new to Xbox. However it is more friendly then what the competition are offering. I hope that helps and let me know if you need me to clear anything up.
OK so I have Farcry 5 on an external USB Stick. I get that symbol with the two arrows, but it still plays absolutely fine, no need to transfer back to the Series S. Its a Kingston DataTraveler Exodia Onyx USB Flash Drive 3.2 Gen. I was told it wouldn't work, but its worked fine, not a bother at all. Now obviously I'll keep brand new AAA games on the internal, but for the moment external USB seems to work perfect too
So my external drive was a waste of money? Because all my games that are 40GB+ are forced to be on my internal drive so I only have like 5 or 6 games and only the other smaller games I have can be on the external drive. Good to know.
Exactly I have the same doubt... On internal you can have 3 or 4 games. So what's the purpose of external if you can't play them if they don't fit on internal???
@@carmenenriquez8444 so I have a 2tb external and I agree with both yall comments it’s very effing dumb. And I only can fit 3 games on my internal, cod mw3, Fortnite, and naraka. And I’m basically full. But I’ve been downloading a lot of games that don’t have the x/s logo and I can play them off my hard drive. So that’s fun, and what I do if I wanna download a new x/s optimized game, is a I take the one with smallest amount of GBS, from my internal and transfer to my external to make room and then download and play that way. And then transfer again and repeat the process. It’s very annoying, it is faster than downloading the games again for sure. But it still takes about 5-10 mins depending on the game and this day an age you could get on a game for that amount of time, get annoyed and get right the fuck off, so it’s a waste of time sometimes. Also very annoying how COD alone is like 200 gbs.
Xbox really chaps my a**. "Internal" storage or storage in general were never an issue, and in the grand scheme of things, its just a portable "gaming PC". This bottleneck shouldn't have ever become a thing.
Unfortunately some games require super fast storage to load assets into games among other things. Hard drives just can't get those speeds, and even external SSDs can't get to the speeds either. Some "Durango" games however seemingly don't require super fast storage (for one reason or another) so they can be played. So i cant play most of my games from my external storage and need to move the games EVERY SINGLE TIME or i buy a kinda overpriced extra storage? There is not a single way i can use my external storage i have right now to play ALL my games on it?
My recommendation as per the video is to Keep the "scarlets" on your Internal storage and "durangos" on your external storage device. External SSDs can be cheaper to purchase (rather than the Seagate Expansion card) and can transfer pretty quickly with speeds up to 2000 MB/s. In one way it makes me concentrate on one or two games, complete them, and then move them off. (but I totally understand that this is not ideal!)
I missed the part where it's shown how to play series x and s games from external storage. Please someone explain it to me. What I understood: - The normal way is to transfer the game from the external storage to the internal storage and you can play it. - You could play an xbox one version of the game but you can't download it in the Xbox ecosystem it's not an option to download xbox one games on the series s/x
There are a few, and only a select few, Xbox Series X/S games, that are slightly different. (This is what I am talking about with Scarlett vs Durango). I give some examples of which are the Durango games in the video. These games, and other Durango games can be played off an External Drive. I have no idea where you get where I said you cannot play Xbox One games? Xbox One games are fully compatible with the Xbox Series X and S, whether installed on the Internal or External drive.
@@NeilFlynnGaming Thanks for the answer! What I meant is that it's not possible to download Xbox one version if you have series X. But since then I've found out that you can choose which version you want to download, at least for Call of Duty.
Hey thanks man. We have the same set up. As far as memory. Only difference is I have an advertised 5 terabyte wd_black external hdd. This video helped so much. have you heard of smart delivery on the series x & s games some older tittles from the xbox one era have this look on the back of the box look up what smart delivery is it is a free upgrade too the next gen consoles ????
Smart Delivery is just a term that Microsoft use to let people know that the correct version of the game is being played on their console of choice. That means if there is a cross generation title of a game Microsoft may have up to FIVE versions of the same game, (Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X) but your Xbox will automatically do this for you. (Some people don't like this idea though, because sometimes file sizes are much larger, e.g If you have a Series S but are happy playing the Xbox One version) I like Smart Delivery, it is a clever system but it would be good to have the option to download any of the other versions if you prefer to do so.
Looks like it. went to transfer HMCC and it didn't display the requirement for faster storage and it's Durango tried with NMS which is Scarlet and it displayed the faster storage message
The whole point in buying an external storage is to have the luxury of not needing to constantly uninstall and reinstall games all the time, this still causes that issue, I didnt learn anything helpful other than i wasted money on storage
Same here. I got a 3 TB drive for Xbox s series but still cant play the game ans you're right it does defeat the purpose, I'm returning it and just getting the card.
In the end it’s not a huge problem, I can transfer back and forth my large games. The issue I have is it’s just annoying. Like let’s say I want to play madden 25 with a buddy. I have to transfer it to my console storage which means I probably have to transfer a game from my console to my storage just to have room to transfer madden and to do all that would probably take like 10-15 minutes which in the end isn’t the end of the world but it is extremely annoying to have to do every time I want to play something
You are seeing it correctly, but it is only just about 1TB, this is the collective free space that I have available, from my internal drive, external 4TB HDD and external 1TB SSD combined. Large AAA Game sizes can average somewhere in the 70-100GB range, but it really can vary!

It depends on how many games you are playing at one time. If you feel the need to have access to more than 5 games at a time then getting an Expansion Card might be the way forward. I totally understand if you want access to any and all of your games at any given time. For me I feel like it makes me focus on completing and playing a certain few games and then I transfer them off to my external HDD once I have completed them. Remember that Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One games can all boot from your external too, as can some Xbox Series X|S games.

It is the same with the PS5 too, that needs an M.2 NVMe drive to boot games. At least "some" Xbox Series XS games can boot off an external drive, although not many. If buying an Xbox Expansion Card is a bit too costly at the moment then finding a fast SSD external drive could be the other alternative and then shuttle games back and forth. Although it is a bit annoying!
You don't have to network transfer it. If you have upgraded your Xbox One S to an Xbox Series S then all you need to do is take that External drive from your old One S to your Series S and plug it straight in. (Some games will need updating to Series S versions.). Have in mind, that if you want to go back and forth between your Series S and One S (for whatever reason) then you may need to update the games again (or in this case downgrade them) so they can play on One S. (The Xbox does this automatically for you). IMPORTANTLY - Forza Horizon 5 is a Series X|S game and HAS to be installed on the internal storage to play the game. If you play on Series S then make sure you have enough space to have it installed. You can store it on your External HDD but you will need to transfer it to the internal storage to play it. It is 117.9GB on Series S. Hope that helps!
I thought this was just a way to force us to buy the memory expansion cards which the system is programmed to accept as internal storage. I just don't get why the higher priced official XBOX expansion card (has 1TB M.2 SSD chip inside) costs more than a normal 1TB M.2 SSD or I would have already bought the darn thing.
The funny thing is that the Expansion card is not an M.2 SSD, but actually a modified CF Express card instead, so it is much slower than what a M.2 NVME SSD could achieve. Funnily enough they could achieve a fairly decent speed over USB 3.2 and an external SSD. I am no expert as to why Microsoft programmed it this way, may it is a way to sell Expansion cards, or maybe there is another reason.
@@NeilFlynnGaming The reason my XBOX gives me is new games need faster storage than an external can provide but one of my 2 externals is an official XBOX SSD external and it still gives me that lame excuse when the internal is also an SSD. I think they just want to make money.
My only concern is: do I essentially own the games I buy since they’re installed on the hard drive? If Xbox were to ever shut down or servers went down, would I be able to plug in the drive and play my games directly off it, provided they’re compatible to be played directly off the drive? I understand that if the games are installed onto you internal drive you can access them offline, but what about external drives? Ownership of the games I buy is such a big deal to me. Thank you for any help 🙏🏼
Yes it can! Some of my apps are installed on the external HDD, although to be fair the apps don't really take up that much space at all. Netflix is 6.9MB, Disney is 85MB, Apple TV 38MB, RUclips 64MB, Prime Video is 3.8MB!

Dumb decision on Microsoft’s part. As a series x owner the Proprietary drive has ruined the new console experience for me. There are plenty of games that should just ask you which version to download and make a lesser but playable experience in my opinion.
As far as I am aware, there is not a way to legitimately turn off the Smart Delivery system. If you are on Xbox Series X or S then it will download the best version of the game for that system. Happy to be proven wrong though!
Wait so if i had already a eternal hard drive with games already and put it on the series x and download them to the series to get optimize and put them back to the eternal hard drive could i still play?
No, unless they were still codenamed Durango. That means that over time some Xbox One games will receive updates which will force you to have the Xbox Series X|S version, and thus force you to have it on internal storage to play. This is due to the Smart Delivery system, which always gives you the best version for the console you are playing on, but unfortunately doesn't give you the choice to install any version you want.
The thing I don’t understand is that it automatically picks it up, and you can only do it for certain games and now all it’s doing is just wasting my time and now I find out that I bought the wrong thing, why? because Microsoft is so stingy and they found out that we can just go on Amazon and get them half the price for better quality and they stopped that.
if my external hard drive have games installed in it, can it work on the xbox series s and also can i take my games of xbox series s and add it to my external hard drive?
Ok my question is do games work on the Xbox expansion card than you can buy? Or does it have the same problem as a normal external hard drive plugged in by a cord?
The Expansion Card acts as an extension to the Internal memory, so if you get one of these then you won't need to keep transferring games back and forth. However, they are quite expensive in comparison to USB External SSDs and HDDs. Maybe you might find a good Black Friday deal!

It is a case of not having external drives that are fast enough, most SSDs don't match the internal speeds of the Xbox, so I would suspect this being the reason. Personally, I am ok with having external drives and just moving them to the internal drive when I am going to play them. So basically what xbox is saying "oh, you guys think are so sleak to buy an external hard drive that is more cheaper to play your games. Think again! Im gonna make it that you won't be able to. And that you need to buy the expansion ssd that cost more for just 1tb"
Hey man thank you a bunch now that I understand it the simplicity makes me feel dumb😂 have a good one
This helps a lot thank you.
No problem! If you have any questions please do ask!
Microsoft is an op for this one I am now moving any game that can be played externally to my external drive thank you sir
Watching this and another video I understood the assignment I now have an extra 160bgs thank you ❤
thank you for explaining the difference, finally a video that does! does a nvme m.2 drive work just as well as the xbox-branded storage though?
No problem. My understanding is that the Expansion Card slot is for a modified CFExpress card. So a m.2 drive won't work as a default storage option. (At least in a consumer friendly fashion anyway!)
I’m convinced I’m the only person that has a 1tb series S, I got mine shorty after launch
A 1TB Series S? Are you sure? They should only be 512GB with 364GB usable space, but if you have a 1TB version you certainly are a very lucky one!!
@@NeilFlynnGaming yes it has 1tb of storage on it. It’s great so I don’t have to move my games between my console and hard drive all the time.

It’s called forza horizon 4 you clown 🤡
Great video! Very useful info, thank you.
Then what’s the point of getting the external hard drive for extra space if you can’t play games on it?
I just bought this shit and now I’m about to return it 🤦🏽♂️
Like why did I spend money on a brand new console to be able to hold 3 games. I literally have 2k, cod and fortnite and have 3.9 GB left.
If you knew those were the games you wanted to play and know how big they are then you're 1st instinct should have been "the series s is not for me."🙄
So what's the purpose... Of buying external if internal let's you have 3 games max and the others can't be played from external??
You don’t look like the janitor from Scrubs!
2k24 is 163 gigs i’m pretty sure the new gta will be too big to play on my series s at all
OK so I have Farcry 5 on an external USB Stick.
Yeah this just pissed me off I bought one too. Waste of money
Keep the "scarlets" on your Internal storage and "durangos" on your external storage device.
Love the conker music ❤️😂
If I just own a Xbox one s, is the ssd the best deal because it is not like I have any games which are optimized for series X or S?
So I spend 200 for a hardrive and it’s not enough storage 🤦🏻
I missed the part where it's shown how to play series x and s games from external storage. Please someone explain it to me.
What I understood:
- The normal way is to transfer the game from the external storage to the internal storage and you can play it.
- You could play an xbox one version of the game but you can't download it in the Xbox ecosystem it's not an option to download xbox one games on the series s/x
yes the fuck it is an option to download xbox one games on a series, whoever told you otherwise LIED
i have a series and i have xbox one games downloaded…
There are a few, and only a select few, Xbox Series X/S games, that are slightly different. (This is what I am talking about with Scarlett vs Durango).
I give some examples of which are the Durango games in the video. These games, and other Durango games can be played off an External Drive.
I have no idea where you get where I said you cannot play Xbox One games? Xbox One games are fully compatible with the Xbox Series X and S, whether installed on the Internal or External drive.
@@NeilFlynnGaming
Thanks for the answer!
What I meant is that it's not possible to download Xbox one version if you have series X. But since then I've found out that you can choose which version you want to download, at least for Call of Duty.
Is that Conkers theme playing?
It is indeed!
Hey thanks man. We have the same set up. As far as memory. Only difference is I have an advertised 5 terabyte wd_black external hdd. This video helped so much. I kept downloading games to the drive and I would try to play it. If it won’t play I’d uninstall it. So thanks a bunch. I can go back to filling up the hard drive with a bunch of games on demand. I can skip cloud gaming 🙄 😆
have you heard of smart delivery on the series x & s games some older tittles from the xbox one era have this look on the back of the box look up what smart delivery is it is a free upgrade too the next gen consoles ????
Smart Delivery is just a term that Microsoft use to let people know that the correct version of the game is being played on their console of choice.
That means if there is a cross generation title of a game Microsoft may have up to FIVE versions of the same game, (Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X) but your Xbox will automatically do this for you.
(Some people don't like this idea though, because sometimes file sizes are much larger, e.g If you have a Series S but are happy playing the Xbox One version)
I like Smart Delivery, it is a clever system but it would be good to have the option to download any of the other versions if you prefer to do so.
So Scarlett means can’t be played on storage
While Durango means playable on storage?
Looks like it. went to transfer HMCC and it didn't display the requirement for faster storage and it's Durango tried with NMS which is Scarlet and it displayed the faster storage message
how can you tell if the game is scarlet or durango before downloading the game?
B03, msfs, warthunder, enlisted are massive games.. I’m glad I appreciate easy red 2 more than enlisted it’s like 12gb 😂
1006.1 gb wtf 😳 lol I’m I seeing that correct lol or Am I tripping
You’re tripping that’s not a lot it can only hold one cod game
@@lordpanda3975 bruh cod is 100-200 gigs
You are seeing it correctly, but it is only just about 1TB, this is the collective free space that I have available, from my internal drive, external 4TB HDD and external 1TB SSD combined.
Large AAA Game sizes can average somewhere in the 70-100GB range, but it really can vary!

What external hard drive should I buy so I can play even Xbox series x/s on it?
There is no option, only the expansions card
It sucks, I recently got a new console and I was given a Samsung 1Tb external drive and now I gotta use my birthday money to get a new one cause honestly transferring games on a Xbox series s is so annoying and Best Buy has it for 149.99 and all the other places have it for 200 like idk bout anyone else but I’m down to save a few bucks. But I’m not getting a damn refurbished that’s for sure. I was gonna buy all game pass and a new controller but it will have to wait.
This actually kinda helped..spend $115 on a 2tb external hard drive xbox certified, had it all downloaded n was pissed when found out and thought it was pretty much useless n thought about returning it if I couldn't play my series s optimised games
How long does it take to move over a 100gb game like MW2 or so over to internal im thinking of buying the first gen seagate usb for $80 with 2tb so i wanna see if its worth it. Or whats an average amount of time it usually takes to transfer games around

So keep the scarlets on ur xbox and the durangos keep them in ur storage device?
Exactly that! I wish I said it as simply as that 😅
If I network transfer my FH5 from my One S to my series S onto a external drive will I be able to play it?

That's right, only certain games can be played from external. But every little helps! Its better than no games at all working from external!
I just wasted 100 bucks for a hard drive that doesnt even let me play the games on it??
You can't play games from external storage.
Move all games with code name Durango to external to save some storage and still play the Durango games off of external
The amount of unnecessary info in this video is actually crazy. You could not have made this more confusing
What about apps? Can I run apps like Netflix or Disney+ from the external hard drive?
Yes it can! Some of my apps are installed on the external HDD, although to be fair the apps don't really take up that much space at all. Netflix is 6.9MB, Disney is 85MB, Apple TV 38MB, RUclips 64MB, Prime Video is 3.8MB!
I might have fixed it by randomly messing with my storage lol
How
Makes me wish I didn’t get the 500gb series s version when I could’ve spent the same amount on an Xbox series X bruh. Like I just bought a series s and a 2 TB external storage and I can’t even download/play cod because it’s 456gb. This wasn’t a problem with older gen PlayStations and Xbox so I don’t think it should be now.

Dumb decision on Microsoft’s part. As a series x owner the Proprietary drive has ruined the new console experience for me.
There are plenty of games that should just ask you which version to download and make a lesser but playable experience in my opinion.
Most digital games come with both versions of the game Xbox 1 and Series X/S and you can choose Xbox 1
As far as I am aware, there is not a way to legitimately turn off the Smart Delivery system. If you are on Xbox Series X or S then it will download the best version of the game for that system. Happy to be proven wrong though!
Now in 2024, how do you know before downloading the Xbox Series optimized game that it will work on the external hard drive? can you help me

So do I need to buy a new storage from Xbox still a little confused
Wait so if i had already a eternal hard drive with games already and put it on the series x and download them to the series to get optimize and put them back to the eternal hard drive could i still play?
No, unless they were still codenamed Durango. That means that over time some Xbox One games will receive updates which will force you to have the Xbox Series X|S version, and thus force you to have it on internal storage to play. This is due to the Smart Delivery system, which always gives you the best version for the console you are playing on, but unfortunately doesn't give you the choice to install any version you want.
Crazy that windows 10 operating system takes up way less room than the Xbox OS I don't understand this at all
The thing I don’t understand is that it automatically picks it up, and you can only do it for certain games and now all it’s doing is just wasting my time and now I find out that I bought the wrong thing, why? because Microsoft is so stingy and they found out that we can just go on Amazon and get them half the price for better quality and they stopped that.
I don’t understand, I was literally playing games on my external hard drive not long ago without an issue and this error randomly popped up
if my external hard drive have games installed in it, can it work on the xbox series s and also can i take my games of xbox series s and add it to my external hard drive?
Ok my question is do games work on the Xbox expansion card than you can buy? Or does it have the same problem as a normal external hard drive plugged in by a cord?
The Expansion Card acts as an extension to the Internal memory, so if you get one of these then you won't need to keep transferring games back and forth. However, they are quite expensive in comparison to USB External SSDs and HDDs. Maybe you might find a good Black Friday deal!
All my external drive games are playable. I don't know how or why but if my internal storage is full and I download an Xbox one game aka game without x/s symbol. The game becomes playable on external drive
I still can't play any of my games downloaded on my external storage because it says I need to transfer it to my internal storage

It is a case of not having external drives that are fast enough, most SSDs don't match the internal speeds of the Xbox, so I would suspect this being the reason.
