  • We have had our Torqeedo Travel 1003 for 8 months and our subscribers have requested a video about it and we have had many others interested in it. So here is an unpaid video of our experience with it, the positives and the negatives. We hope it is helpful and please feel free to ask any questions.
    Torqeedo website: www.torqeedo.com/en
    About us:
Our names are Jason and Tracey and we traded our house, cars, business, job and security for freedom, adventure, travel and living simply amongst nature and the seas on our 45 foot Hanse 445 sailing boat, Kawai.
We don't know exactly where the winds will take us at this stage but over the next year we hope to sail to Turkey, Greece, Montenegro, Croatia, Italy, Spain, Morocco, Gibraltar, Canary Islands and then across the Atlantic Ocean.
Jase loves making travel videos and we decided to upload to youtube to share our adventure. We really hope you enjoy and feel free to drop us a comment any time to chat or subscribe to follow along :)

I bought mine in 2014 and I've never had any problems running it in saltwater. No error messages, no breaking pins, nothing! I've never maintained it in any way. It's been great. It even gets me and my little boat to plane! Also it gets A LOT of attention.

So glad that I stumbled upon this video! I've just bought an ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 Plus which as twice the range of yours but shares the same advantages. The light bulb moment for me was seeing you you secure the motor to the transom by locking the two mounting clamps together. Why didn't I think of this??!! Thanks guys.

Bought mine March 2020 for $2K. Have used it a dozen times so far ' on the Potomac when the wind died for our 19' day sailor-- 4 miles against the tide and current last week and only used 80%. The ONLY drawback found is the price, but once you realize the versatility, light weight, and ease of re-charging at home, you'll never complain. The E30 error pops up once or twice, but only requires a quick re-connect. We store the shaft/prop in an old duffel on board and an old gym bag that holds the battery and tiller to take home. Run it at mid-speed and it will last no prob, full-throttle it and, yes, you'll run it down fast, but once you get moving, power down and you'll be fine. Not having to haul/store cans of gas or hoisting a 70lb massive marine battery will again compensate for the cost.

Great review. The Torqueedo's are pretty cool. I love the quiet operation. As a sailor of over 3 decades, I would recommend you also have a petrol outboard that can get your tender on plane (5-6 hp). You probably have room on your rail. Careful boating can reduce the frequency of emergencies, but they still happen. If you have a medical emergency, the speed of the tender can mean life or death. The environmental impact of a small modern petrol outboard is small because the motors are small and they barely use any fuel. A lifetime of use is less than one plane ride or a couple months of driving a car. And if the petrol engine is your "backup" then the environmental impact is almost zero.
We've had a thru-hull break and the speed of the tender saved our sailboat. I sped in to shore for parts while my parents fought a losing battle of leak vs. bilge pumps. I personally know TWO different people who've raced a loved one to the shore/ambulance in the tender. Things like that are rare, but they happen. You are a lot more self-reliant on the water.

My share pin shared and could not remove the propellor because the shaft turned with the nut. Had to disassemble the motor to repair. I put a hack saw slot at the end of the shaft to fit a screw driver to let me remove the prop in the future. Share pins expensive so cut off a few bits of 3mm brass rod. My battery charger supplied with the motor failed and now use a 12v power pack that charges ok and 1/10th the price. I also have a12v Minn Kota that I use an 18v Lipo battery with, and it is brilliant.

We own the same setup with a spare battery because one of us works onshore so the dinghy must be ready to go. Lots of e30 errors and a couple others as well so bought a spare tiller cause like I said, it’s got to be ready to go. Constant replacement of pins and no, we haven’t hit anything or snagged anything. Torqeedo solar panel ended up fried, one battery died. Torqeedo offered “to look” at both but we live in an island area with no Torqeedo support so the costs are prohibitive to ship. The items aren’t quite 2 years old yet....don’t think much of Torqeedo’s customer service as their reply: “Gee whiz, sorry for the trouble, don’t know what it could be and you should get 4-6 years of battery life!” So, beware of needing service and how you may or may not get the support depending on your location. For us it seemed to be the answer to not having to stow fuel onboard, light weight and easy to handle, no fumes and quiet so we sacrificed spending on other items so we could buy it. We just bought another battery and Torqeedo did offer it at a lower price because of our problems but we have to pay hazmat shipping charges ourselves to get it down island-very expensive proposition. Would we do it again? Not sure. Will we keep it? Not sure, and that’s based on mediocre customer service and support.

I bought my 3hp long shaft Torqeedo in January 2020. Within 2 weeks the plastic battery moulding which holds the plastic hinge pin had broken. I was very careful to handle it carefully and never let anyone else use it. Torqeedo are arguing that it is not a warrantee issue. The hinge mechanism which lifts the prop out of the water fell apart due to the circlips falling off. I was able to fix it using a piece of wood and cable ties. It was left on my punt on the mooring for a day while I went fishing. On return the motor had worked the transom screws loose with the motion of the waves and had fallen into the water, hanging by a rope. Water had got into the battery so the battery is ruined. I am in dispute with the dealer and Torqeedo over these issues. I would warn anyone considering buying one. They need to be handled with great care as the design and engineering have very basic flaws. Sadly Torqeedo do not seem to be interested in looking after their customers. £1800 is a lot to spend for an unreliable engine. I dread to think what a new battery is going to cost me!

We own a Torqeedo 1003 and can endorse all your comments. The most irritating thing is bad connections with those connectors... We don't always get SoG until disconnected and reconnected.
We had a prop strike on a hidden rock and sheered the pin. €1.15 to buy a new pin but €15 delivery, yes €15, for something the size of a panel pin if you buy from Torqeedo. The pin is also prone to corrosion and can stick in the shaft so advice removing it everyone once in a while and cleaning it up. Minor irritations a side it is way better than a petrol engine for steady, short journeys to and from the boat.

Hi Guys we have the same motor and did a review of ours on the first run. I will be doing a further review now 9 months later.
I to had the error problem and found that over tightening the connections can cause this. I also find the throttle not very responsive but the main drawback for me is the fact without a second battery I cannot use the motor everyday as it seems to take about 24 hours to recharge on solar...
Everything else is just great and the few minor problems have not put me off at all and I just love that I dont need to carry petrol anymore....

Hi Manuel, that's a tough question, if we just use it a couple of times during the day to go ashore, it might only take 10 minutes. Usually we use it for a few days then top up the power if we need to motor somewhere in the yacht via the inverter. Same applies with solar we charge up the batteries then turn on the inverter and it's usually full in an hour. I believe we once drained the battery completely when we first received the battery and it took 7 hours to fully charge. Can't help regarding the portable solar, don't have it. Hope that helps. We LOVE the idea of a Torqeedo, but worried mainly about battery recharging... can we ask what solar input and inverter setup you have? You mentioned you could charge it from the boat?? Also how well does battery hold charge when not in use? Many thanks in advance! Liked and subscribed :) Kath and T xxx

Hey guys, how are you? No worries at all, we enjoyed making the video, lots of out takes hahaha. For us we have solar panels (400w) and a diesel generator. The solar panels alone would be enough though. We have a Victron 12V 70amp inverter. Unless you go on a long trip at a fast speed, the battery lasts a long time. If you are motoring your boat at any time you would also plug it in to power with the inverter. We just top it up every day and we haven't been caught out since the first day we used it hahaha. In regards to the battery losing charge, can't really answer that one as we use it most days and it doesn't seem to lose charge during that time. Hope that helps and feel free to ask any more questions if you have any. :) Where are you guys currently? Will follow you guys

Do you have a comparison of maintenance cost over a 10 year lifespan? I'm guessing that the battery lasts longer than 10 years, do you have any info? I can't see any on their website.
I would say that new plugs and oil and fuel and possibly a water pump cost would be offset by a new battery.
We have a Bison 68lb, but get frustrated by the weight of the battery. It's a much cheaper option (About £280 with the battery and box) but takes longer to set up. We do use the battery to supplement our domestic bank when not in use, so there's an advantage there. I also had to shorten the shaft length to stop it kicking the shaft from horizontal, but that was an easy job.

      @SailingKawai  5 лет назад

Hey Andrew, no we don't have that info sorry, would be good to know. Thanks for the review. I like the idea of these electric motors but will probably buy a good size petrol powered outboard to go with our tender. Here's why. The outboard is in fact an auxiliary engine for the yacht, to be used when the main engine fails at a critical time, such as when approaching an anchorage or entering a harbour, or when the yacht has run aground, say, on a coral reef or sandbank. For these circumstances the power and endurance of petrol outboard with a tender can be the difference between sneaking away from disaster or experiencing it full on.

I bought a replacement Torqueedo 1103CS after our last one got stolen this year. I’ve had the new one for only 8 weeks and yesterday when I was heading ashore it refused to switch on. As I’ve used a Torqueedo for 2 seasons now I would say we are experienced using one however I’m now beginning to have regrets buy another one after this failure. I’m in the Balearics Islands I. The Mediterranean and even though it’s one of the most popular sailing destinations there is no service Centre here. As we have guests joining us in less than a week it’s unlikely we’ll be able to resolve this quickly and getting it returned will not be straightforward or quick. The only solution we may have is buy another motor (probably a reliable Honda ) which if it broken down getting someone to fix it would be simple anywhere in the world. It’s all very well trying to contribute to saving the planet however when they breakdown, even when new, the frustration is just not worth it trying to get them fixed.

I think it's really pretty simple - the Torqeedo is superior in every area except range, but the range is dreadful. If you can be confident this will only be for maneuvering in the harbor, it's Torqeedo all the way. If you feel you might be becalmed miles from home or in too much wind for sailing, the Torqeedo won't get you back.

I own a T1003 as well and in the beginning I found it very unreliable as well. Most error messages were due to a bad connection when plugging in cables which improved after cleaning the connections. I also started rinsing the prop and and shaft pretty much after each saltwater use which has helped decrease the number of error messages. Good thought on the product design, still needs to have some of the kinks ironed out in my opinion. Great video though.

It is nice, but I need an outboard motor that provides long-distance sea travel and a greater hp to speed up. The two biggest disadvantages are 1. High cost to purchase - it is prohibitively expensive than the outboard gas motor, and 2. Short duration and short-range on sea travel. I plan to go out to the sea on a 14-foot inflatable boat (no RIB) and visit the island from thirty miles offshore, and one place is fifty miles from offshore. The four-stroke gas motor of 20 hp with 15 gallons of fuel would be sufficient. It can allow me to outrun the storm before the big stormy turbulent waves could swallow me into a rough sea and maroon in a sea forever. Holy Stormy Sea Nightmare, Batman!

They break the circuit up into three separate modules so you need to buy their battery which has part of the circuit you need to run it inside. This way you cannot use a generic battery and they charge you $1,000 for their battery. The cells are epoxied into the housing so you can't change them either. They also put the electronic speed control circuit in the lower unit that goes underwater. It leaks and that gets ruined. Repair is about what a new motor costs. They claim 3 horsepower but it only consumes the equivalent of 1.25 horsepower. it cannot produce any more than that, its a 1.25 horsepower motor.

If you need a repair they will not sell you the parts it has to be shipped back, very expensive, not to mention if you did ship it for repairs you wont have a motor for quite some time. The other problem i found was their method of deriving horsepower numbers has nothing to do with real world performance, the motor in this video has nothing close to the power of a 3 hp gas motor. Dont get me wrong, I love the idea of the electric outboard, the companies that build these need to be more forthright in their stats and make motors that are serviceable.

Windy conditions make it difficult to determine how far you will get, it can die without good warning. It is very easy to take 2lt petrol with, spare batteries not so easy. With a molded case battery, if the design is changed you are stranded with no replacement battery. If you need to travel silent, battery is the ultimate, if you need to get home petrol or diesel. I have also sit with starting problems, but removing or cleaning a carb on the water no problem, if your electrical fail, you can be stuck. I know in time to come the tide will also change to advantage the electrical. Thank you, and we like to see where technology is taking the fishermen. Gods good

This type of boat is not suitable for the engine. Should use a flat-bottomed fiber. this type of boat is not suitable for the engine. The viscous friction is very high.

ePorpulsion technologicall far away from torqedo..
1-batary connection with plastic pin by torqeedo is really technologicall fail.If you loose it is gone..It is not floating.
ePropulsion Battery bigger capacity, easy connection and floating.
2-TWO wire connection of torqeed makes many connection
    failures.ePropulsion only one wire connection.
3-control panel of torqeedo create many problem due to connection while mounting..ePropulsion rigit on the main body so eliminate connection problem
4-ıf you check silent test torqedo reach 74dsb full power while ePropulsion only 48dsb

No exhaust smell??!?!? That's one of my favorite parts about boating! I love that sweet smell of good 'ol fossil fuels.

I regret buying 1003. Faults, faults faults. Use W40 is the only thing you hear from their support....Absolutely unreliable.

No, I should NOT buy it. The reason is simple
2017 I bought 1003S brand new. The price it 2 times more than petrol outboards of the similar power.
2018 engine failed. Repaired under warranty
2020 engine failed. No warranty. Repair estimation $1150 (AUD), which is price of 2.5HP brand new Suzuki.
C'mon, it fails for no reason or reason which dealer cannot explain, and doesn't last a 3 years. Why would you buy it?
