@@markkenny623 not really. The golf swing utilizes hip rotation and club shaft whip for speed. Some mechanics between golf and baseball are similar such as hip rotation, hands staying tight to your body and the extension of the hands at follow through, but the way swing speed is generated is different. Notable difference is the equipment. That baseball bat is not going to flex like a golf club does so if you apply too much downward force at the start of the downswing, you will have difficulty not "casting" the club. For golf, the bottom half of the swing where you whip your hands through and turn the club over is where we generate the most "power".

I’ve watched several of these videos now and don’t usually comment. However, this explanation of force and energy is making my hair hurt! All that quick bat flip is doing is getting the bat in the proper swing plane . All the energy is coming from the potential energy stored in the coiled torso, which is then converted to kinetic (mechanical) energy as you uncoil/rotate through the hips against your feet fixed at the ground. The “force” has to be in the direction of the incoming ball “at contact” or the ball will go no where. That’s just simple physics and more specifically called momentum. If you graphed your swing force it would look like a sin wave, starting at zero at the beginning of your swing maximizing at mid point and ending at zero again. The key to being a good hitter , for power that is, beyond just having excellent hand eye coordination, is timing your swing so the peak force, at the top of the sin wave, is at the point of contact as you uncoil. This is why it’s important to keep your weight back so you do not lose the stored potential energy in the transfer of weight from back to front foot and maximize it through the rotational kinetic energy which generates the bat speed and corresponding force.
The technique in this video may not be bad, but the the explanation of the forces and energy at play here are just wrong. This is all about converting stored potential energy to mechanical kinetic energy efficiently, and timing it so the peak of of that conversion happens at the point of contact with the ball. This is of course is for maximum power. “Great” hitters are not all power hitters. Any energy that doesn’t contribute to the efficient conversion of energy, is just wasted.

The most important part of hitting is barreling the ball with the sweet spot of the bat, the ball will fly off the bat if you do that. In order to do that consistently, a "handsy" swing is best because it gives you much greater barrel accuracy, as you can see exactly where you are taking your hands and the bat. Watch Tony Gwynn and his "handsy" swing -he definitely would let his hands go ahead of him in his swing, he wouldnt swing from the back with his hands stuck to his back hip and shoulder.

All of my hitting coaches growing up taught us based on our natural swing. I throw with my right, naturally a left handed hitter but can hit from both sides. I had to learn my swing from both sides of the plate. I batted leadoff every year lefty cause i got on base, drag bunts, hits to the opposite side of the field ECT. If I came up in the middle of the game and I had two people on base I went up righty because that's where my power came from. What we are taught should be based on our natural swings. If we are good enough to play competitively we have a natural swing that works that may need some tweaks. I don't like hitting coaches who try and transform every hitter not based on there natural swings

I played collegiate and profession baseball and it actually takes a massive change in swing biomechanics to play at a high level for most players.
Almost every batter has to learn how to externally rotate their trail shoulder while swinging and most guys don’t do it naturally at a level required to play professionally, even many collegiate players.

Don't forget if you spend all energy long before it is applied to the ball, the bat speed is slowed down. It is complete bs that the swing is finished at the back position. That bat flip just puts the bat in plane with the ball, the hands of all hitters move forward and the shoulders and hips continue to turn applying energy into the bat until the point just passed the point of contact. It is the same with golf. The point is to hit thru the ball not at or behind the ball for max velocity. This guy exaggerated the "improper swing" just to sell his technique. I can appreciate a new perspective and/or analysis of the hotly contested mechanics of a swing. However, there are several issues kinesthetically and physically with his technique. For instance, the amount of bat wrap (head of bat wrapping around his head) limits the ability to take the shortest distance from coil to contact, and makes certain that all contact will be a pull in nature. So, your timing better be prefect and good luck with the outside pitches. Doesn’t mean it won’t work for some hitters, just not a wide variety. Barry Bonds had a swing mechanic like this, and he had to hug the plate for this reason.

If that's the case, the ball manipulates the bat at point of contact. However, You extend your arms through the point of contact with strong hands and arms so the bat manipulates the ball.... so you're still applying force through the point of contact...... correct?

A perfect pitch to drive into the opposite field. They all take the first pitch which is usually their best pitch their going to get. Usually a fastball down the middle. They watch a first strike, get behind in the count & strike out chasing crap in the dirt. I like his...this is what they don't understand. Who's they? Your sons little league players? This guy is great at hitting a ball off a tee. He has to suck facing an actual pitcher. A stretched leg...what is that. And if your not applying force at contact he says. You better be applying force at contact. What a complete windbag!

I think this is true for most sports and athletic higher achievers and champions. The power is in the first 1/4 of range of motion. Whether it’s basketball players jumping, baseball players, tennis, even skateboarders, long jumpers, pole vault, the list goes on. And then we all slow down ideas and we see a much faster smoother launch and a carefully crafted follow through. It’s often related to core strength. Baseball football and basketball for sure have shared a lot of their advance trainers trends in philosophy with building up core strength. Core dominance is also while many rather in-athletic loookg men are the stuff of nightmares for champion boxers etc. Because it’s not always plhelpcul to be lighter and longer winded. Sometime astout core type athlete just hits harder and faster. Maybe they just snap. Depend on the sport of course. Tyson was a pretty stout guy. That snatch at the block tooth, hitting faster than your competitors; that’s not easily.

I played college ball. Some minor. He is 100% right. I cant explain it, but you learn to let the momentum, transfer thru you body to complete the entire motion, The ball just kinda pops the ball. If you hit the sweet spot of the bat on the sweet spot on the ball, its gone every time. Ive seen 12 year olds hit big leage homers using that method. it takes lots of BP to master it.

It's all about the wheelhouse effect and physics, using the least amount of energy and effort for maximum results, Ray Lankford and Ken Griffey Jr had similar swings and I'll say that they had pretty good years in the majors, Mike Piazza had a specific swing for his career with impressive results, but I'm 51 so 🤷‍♂️ each player has their own pitch they like to hit, but also have a particular swing for maximum results and it's why a lot of them twist and nearly fall to the ground because of their swing

I don’t know how it couldn’t be more simple than: swing the bat. Your goal is to hit the ball, which means you must swing accurately (ie a “good” swing is proper technique) Power comes from the initial drive you put into it, but the transfer of that power is the key to success. If you can’t transfer power with proper technique, you aren’t going to do well; no matter how hard you swing.
