hello ! you say that you work with F-14 and i have a question....we can not see on the film but if you watch the movie "The Final Countdown", some F-14 have a rope in front of cockpit (only F-14 with a black color around the cockpit) and if i have not dream....some others planes too...but i don't know the name (i think saber...but not sure)......do you know why this "rope" ?? , why use ? thank you if you have a answer and sorry for my bad english
My God ! How can mere men create such a thing of beauty. Never before or since has something so sleek ever graced the clouds. A Ferrari of the Sky with Teeth and Claws. Loving it since 1974 and I'm now 65.
As an added note. The interior video of the formation flight brings some of the most " respected " tears I can give. Phenomenal display of strength and coordination. I would never ever want to be on their receiving end.
I was born disabled so my dream of being a pilot was done from the get go. That being said I've always been in awe of these beautiful cats! Top gun is still one of my favorite movies of all time! Thank you TOMCAT for 30 plus years of service and for keeping AMERICAN skyies free from danger. And thank you for taking care of your pilots. Rest in peace TOMCAT.
Pilots of any plane which takes off & lands on an aircraft carrier are - DEFINITELY- the MOST talented people. It especially takes skill to land on carrier while the sea is choppy &/or when there is a storm !! You must have to admire those excellent pilots !
As a young man working at the Fort Sill Officers Club in Lawton, Oklahoma I had the pleasure of serving and meeting the two generals, both named Tom, this planned is named for.

With the new long range anti-ship missiles now on the scene, the need for a long range, blazingly fast interceptor/fighter plane like the F-14 Tomcat to intercept enemy planes before they can fire those long range missiles at the aircraft carriers, has arisen. The need for the F-14 Tomcat has been reborn. An updated version with better, more powerful, fuel efficient engines and upgraded avionics would fill the bill. The F-14 Tomcat is about 400 mph faster than the F/A-18 Super Hornet and F-35, making both of those planes very lacking in the speed department and ability to defend their aircraft carriers. There is now a big need for the F-14 Tomcat once again. Without the F-14 Tomcat, our aircraft carriers are at risk. Bring her back!
One of the Best carrier based fighters ever, yes ..the best ever ? , it's all about eras and if you flew for the US Army / Air Force or Navy / Marine Corps... i would say one of the best loved for sure. Remember... F15 Strike Eagle Pilots and Raptor Pilots would all have a genuine opinion about their fighter aircraft.
I don't think there will ever be a fighter plane as iconic as the F-14 in the US Navy, surpassing even the mythical F-4 Phantom II, and even in other navies and air forces. It had capabilities that are hard to match even today.
Was sad to see this one retire.Every weapon system is supported at the top of a pyramid of people and teams that keep it up to date and operational.Saw a LOT of these at Pt Mugu.I know they have the rcs of a flying barn and an IR signature of a magnesium flare on a dark night but still...can't bring myself to say they are obsolete.Iran still flies their remaining F14's with a re-engine program rumored.Iran has more combat experience with this weapon than anyone and they would love to pick thru the boneyard for spares. Not likely to ever happen tho.
