  • The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a supersonic, twin-engine, two-seat, variable-sweep wing fighter aircraft. The Tomcat was developed for the United States Navy's Naval Fighter Experimental (VFX) program following the collapse of the F-111B project. The F-14 was the first of the American teen-series fighters which were designed incorporating the experience of air combat against MiG fighters during the Vietnam War.
The F-14 first flew in December 1970 and made its first deployment in 1974 with the U.S. Navy aboard USS Enterprise (CVN-65), replacing the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II. The F-14 served as the U.S. Navy's primary maritime air superiority fighter, fleet defense interceptor and tactical reconnaissance platform. In the 1990s, it added the Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night (LANTIRN) pod system and began performing precision ground-attack missions. The Tomcat was retired from the active U.S. Navy fleet on 22 September 2006, having been supplanted by the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. As of 2012, the F-14 was only in service with the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force, having been exported to Iran in 1976, when the U.S. had amicable diplomatic relations with the then-government of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.Anytime,Baby!

I just shared this in the US Navy Airdale group. This was our fighter and we will alway love it. The Tomcat was the muscle car of fighters. In the world of Naval Aviation and our historic birds, we all have favorites and when it comes to comparing the Tomcat with birds like the Hornet, it's like comparing a '69 Camaro to a Corvette. Some of us will always have a loyalty to the big muscle car and that is exactly what the Tomcat is.

More like a minivan. Hornet does a lot of things and gets the job done, but is not particularly exceptional at anything while F-14 was exceptional at many things especially air-to-air missions. Way more powerful, faster, longer range, exceptional payload carrying capabilities and at higher speeds, unmatched.

Hornet was a slow dog. It seriously lacked power and speed. Those tiny engine/intakes don't produce enough thrust. It is OK while flying clean/slick, but once you put tanks, bombs etc, it is seriously a depressing plane to fly. F-14 by comparison had a wall of thrust and very highly aerdoynamic airframe allowing it to fly very fast. Once you put missiles, rails, tanks on it, the thrust and aerodynamic efficiency (wings never had any weapons or load on them) allowed it to still perform very well since all of it was mounted along the center-line so maneuverability was still great with weapons load.

Tomcat, the best ever made proved it's merit hauled it's weight and won against faster jets. The raptor, expensive sparkly and that's about it.
