The pain I have experienced trying to make them is immense, casting and molding would've been expensive and I just settled with handmaking out of foam blocks.
I would imagine that the episode 2, where Boba actually makes his stick, would have been helpful but you have done an amazing job. Also lots of good info about foams you used. You have my subscription.
The handle of the gaffi stick incorporated a full length totokia and other versions incorporated other forms of long handled Fijian clubs. Also the length also incorporates the taiaha of the Maori people's. Apparently Temuera also uses mau rakau (a Maori martial art) in his use of the Gaffi stick
This is honestly strangely elegant and beautiful. It just looks like something made out of love, I don’t really know how to describe it. The wood effect is really really great!

from my experience, cons do one of two things when it comes to pointy props like this one... either have something covering the spike part until you're doing a picture, OR have the spike be rounded or blunt, to reduce the risk of poking someone... and then other cons just don't allow them at all
Mine is blunt, there is about a 5mm flat circle on the end. I am curious what my local con may say next week. As a guest, I can bring it anyway, but I am somewhat curious.
i was contemplating building one of these a while ago, and while it wouldn't be con safe, the metal safety rails for bathrooms seemed to have the perfect size, shape, and textures already in it for the ANH version!
Am I the only person who hopes that boba Fett obtains some beskar and adds it to his gaffi stick. Boba seriously needs it, a Beskar weapon can seriously save your life, especially if he ever runs into someone with a lightsaber, and he's already very skilled with the gaffi stick. The mandalorian should help him get the Beskar for his gaffi stick, then they can train and spar with eachother, Beskar spear vs Beskar gaffi stick, or darksaber vs Beskar gaffi stick, either way it would be a perfect melee weapon for Boba.
Looks great! Your approach is pretty much exactly the way I already planned to make mine. Lol. Also it's awesome to see SKS getting more attention. His builds are ridiculous and he's a pretty chill dude.
@@The_Nailsmith No worries mate, easy mistake to make as it is a "native" war club and Native Americans did use a similar one, it was a carved ball in a curved haft.
AWESOME! I have struggled with clear coats killing the metallic shine and have found Future brand gloss floor acrylic works really well . and you can either brush or airbrush on. also for painting plastics try duplicate-color adhesion promoter , its available in most auto parts stores. I've used it on the cheapest shiniest plastics without fail.
Fun Fact the Light Saber is based on the Samurai Katana. Fun Fact the Blaster is based on a real life Pistol. Fun fact the Thermal Detonator is based on a Grenade... I think there is a pattern with all these weapons.
Your gaffi stick turned out amazing, as always. You are a fabrication genius, sir. And yes, Steve's Boba Fett blaster was incredible, wasn't it? I sat slack jawed through his entire build video. Between you and Steve and Bill Doran and Svetlana, I am studying under the masters of cosplay.
Make a blaster just so people can see the differences between your and Steve's techniques. Great video, As you can probably tell by my profile picture, I'll be making this within the next few months!!!!!!!
Actually, the original stick from the Tuscan raider was a lot longer than it seemed. It’s a forced perspective due to the angle of the raider’s arms so it very well could be just as long, though I haven’t researched this so I could be very wrong! Also, I absolutely love your videos!!! This turned out so cool!!!
The overly explained intro 🤣 Needless to say, absolutely loved watching this come together and the result is really beautiful. Looking forward to more Boba Fett props, if there are any more planned! 💙
The 'onion' looks like the bulbous bit when a branch gets torn off a tree. If these are modified plant fragments, explains the variability while still looking 'the same'.
Very cool tutorial. One thing I'd correct is when referencing bubble wrap in the original trilogy use Zuckuss's eyes as an example....I mean, that's just too cool.
To add shadow to the spike, you first start with your black undercoat and drybrush your lighter browns, starting with the darkest then going to the lightest.
Plumber trick. Cut a short piece of pipe, heat it up and stretch it over the smaller pipe. Insert into larger pipe. The difference in size is equal to the thickness of the pipe. Ie 3/4 pipe is 1/8” smaller than 1”.
Big fan commenting from Australia 🇦🇺 I had to laugh when you said it's December so you can use a heat gun, in Australia right now it's summer and where I live in the tropics it's bloody humid 😅 watched episode 1 last night and it was incredible then just started having a Star Wars original trilogy marathon
I do think about my friends in Australia when ever i talk about temperatures in the shop. Christmas has always been cold for me, it's interesting to think about your 'four burner' Christmases!
@@OdinMakes want to swap cities this year then??? You can melt for a while I catch a cold... Could I suggest a build though, an Odin custom built lightsaber or something from Pokemon 😁
Hey Odin could you please make the spider tracker from the 1994 animated spider man show? It would be awesome to see in the next video.also your work is awesome
The reason the spike on the onion thing isn't sharp is because the gaffi stick was actually a tool that was used as a weapon (just like for peasants in medieval times) the stick was actually used to clean the banthas teeth and to get bits of food out from the teeth.
...is it really three fins? I could make sense of it if it has two, because then it would be a decent emergency sand digging tool, but three implies aerial stability when thrown... on a curved club... so yeah, no sense at all
I am certain it's three. There were four on the sticks in Star Wars, and I just assumed there were four on Boba's, until I really looked while building this.
I don't want to give any spoilers for the new episode, but your timing is serendipitous
LOL🤣
I’d love to see you tackle Doctor Octopus’ metal arms (either the full harness or just the tentacles)!!!!
Maybe like a puppet of one arm even

Would be amazing
@@onetrickmango6194 imagine how painful it was to make the practical arms in Spiderman 2 that could be puppeteered. They were only CG for some shots.

I frequent RPF, but didn't think about them this time!
Fabulous work. Looking forward to many more Odin builds in 2022. . . . . Hail Odin.
Your narration reminds me of those old "How it's made" shorts for kids. No idea how I got here, but this was awesome. Thanks!
Just saying, Odin needs to be the next voice of How it's Made
Once again we see that other propmakers rule through cool gear, but Odin rules through respect for his mad skillz. -_^

Your smile of satisfaction when the onion head fitted to the handle was great to see. It is nice when a plan comes together.
It would awesome to see your take on a Tusken Raider Masks!! The ones on the 1st episode were cool.
I do like the variations on the masks. The differences were more subtle back in 1977.
No spoilers but Odin will love a scene in Ep2.

awesome job as per usual
Thank you!
Awesome seeing how they're made in the second episode

The love for other makers puts a great video over the top! Now I have to put my obligatory Macross/Robotech helmet, please Odin, say you will.

Something I'm wondering is this, As a weapon, is it really an effective tool for hand to hand combat?
its a sharp stick, so you can definately do some damage, the other end is a club which focuses the blow into a sharp point, a good weapon.

I panicked for his Mecha Godzilla head for sure!
Fantastic
Would you share where you got the weights that held the pieces in place while the glue dried on the blades? Also the circle cutter?
Why didnt you cut a triangle half way through where you wanted it to bend then secured it using some paintable silicone?
