Thank you, Adam and team, for such a wonderful review and for sharing the work that our studio does! The joy on your face in this video warms our hearts :)
currently 27 but i grew up without a dad and a mom who always worked, but Adam and the mythbusters were always there to make me smile and teach me something new. As a HUGE star wars nerd too i’m so happy to see you continuing to follow your history and passion to this day. Thank you Mr Savage.
The Totokia was carried mainly by inland tribes who fought in jungle, thus the shorter heavier club. Fighting was an important part of accumulating Mana (prestige) and one story associated with this weapon was that the point at the end was designed to kill with a blow to the head and that warriors often completed to see who could kill the most by using a measured blow which inflicted a hole into but did not crush the skull. It was ameasure of skill and courage. Vinaka Vaka Levu.
That weapon was first wielded by "Lela of the tribe suvea team " (correction Romana ). in a very old doctor who episode. The prop company had several weapons from early who that were reused in star wars even as recently as the maldallorian series.
Cool! Maybe need one of those long musket style blaster rifles you see the Tusken Raiders also have? If you replicate a bantha to ride on..whoa, totally complete the look
Regal Robot: So, we have a new pair of Gaffi sticks to release, how should we market them? Adam Savage: Hey Regal Robot, I need the specs on the Gaffi stick, can you help me out? Regal Robot: Massive Grinch smile for free marketing.
adam gives me a heart attack every time he handles and unboxes new products. 😅 not sure if value goes down or up when resold by adam lol i love the content like always!
Regal Robot makes sincere pieces of art. They not going to be used by cosplayers (for one thing, the cost is fairly prohibitive for most people). That's not a knock - though certainly a touch of envy! - but just a comment that these aren't mass-market products. That's not the market Regal Robot is in. Just for touch of expectation-management for those who may be watching this. Beautifully done, Tom and crew!
Sometimes I interpret the cave like a TARDIS. Just infinite rooms and spaces that appear and disappear as needed. A mix between that an Narnia. Crawl through a cubby and tumble into an dimension made of card stock and drill bits.

Someone turned up on the UK antiques roadshow with a Fijian war club that looked just like the wooden part of your prop. It was absolutely amazing and also terrifying to see. Made from a super dense and heavy wood it was beautiful. The owner didn’t have much knowledge of the age or purpose of their artefact, and the roadshow’s expert was almost drooling with delight at being able to hold it. A great moment if you’re interested and can find that episode.
The 'New Hope' version would be of questionable legality in Australia due to the welded metal end, which could actually be used as a mace. Different regulations in each State here. Traditionally the decoration of the wooden club end was human teeth embedded in the business end and sometimes the spike could be made from whale bones or teeth if the spike was broken off (or you were someone very important). The shape comes from it being the initial stage of a Pandanus palm that is sprouting near the water, seems as they grow up they frequently fall over and the main shoot grows curved to compensate. Somewhere I have the museum catalog with details of all the sorts of war clubs used in Fiji, back in the 'bad old days'.
How about crowbars, are you allowed to own those? Or maybe an axe? Fairly sure I could do some damage with one of those. Sometimes governments are pretty dumb. I'm not against regulating weapons, but some common sense has to be used I feel.
@@treborrrrr you can own and use anything that there's a legitimate non-violent use for (even non-firearm weapons) but if you use them in a threatening manner in public you can be arrested. I used to take public transport to my martial arts lessons absolutely klanking with weapons and it was fine but if you take one out and start swinging it around we might have a problem.
@@treborrrrr absolutely, I live in Western Australia which is a little more permissive but if you can own a sword I can't see any issue with this asside from the potential cultural issues I talked about in another comment.
For the confused americans, yes this is a weapon. You wouldn't give this to a stunt person and tell them to swing around a steel end. Feel free to cast a rubber or build plastic replica if you have to ask if this is a weapon. I don't know why this is such a hard concept. First day of fencing (we were around 10 years old), the instructor gave a serious warning to us that these were weapons. We were not to run with swords. We had to keep tips down. We had to be sure of our target, as they had to give consent to spar While having protection on (hence the visual checks and the verbalisation of En garde, prêt?, Allez). Actively we were trying to score physical touches over vitals, hence how fencing is lethal if you don't take enough precautions. Yet a large metal mass at the end of a staff, (regardless if there is a spike or not), not everyone has carbon/steel toed boots on plus there are kids who are about at this height. Just don't Adam.
I think for the purposes of going to a con i would be nervous of taking a resin prop since it could get beat up. Maybe one made out of foam would be good, but either way those clubs look amazing
Even though I'm not sure how at home it would look in a desert, I wonder if a piece of driftwood in the correct shape wouldn't be a much more in-themed display? Gorgeous prop.
That is definitely a thing you can not bring to a con. You'll have to fabricate one out of foam to be able to complete your tusken raider costume for con use
*as to the question of if you would be permitted to carry that mostly metal gaffi stick prop at an actual convention, by thought would be probably not*
3d printing tech is making prop replicas more affordable and obtainable these days. I’m currently waiting on a hand-painted replica of Majora’s Mask from the Legend of Zelda series of games that has the very realistic look of hand carved wood, but took a fraction of the time to make because it’s 3d printed and resin coated and therefore, is a fraction of the cost. Still laborious and pricey but not nearly as laborious and pricey as hand carving a piece like that.
Last time I was this early someone ended up very disappointed. Seriously though, I'd kill to get to have a poke around that workshop. Even apart from all the cool shit that gets shown off, there is always so much cool looking stuff in the background of most of the shots.
How wild would it be to see a story on the news, where someone is the victim of a home invasion, and he takes out the criminal with his welded steel, replica Gaffi Stick?
Sure, somebody can make a replica of a prop that appeared in ANH for about 10 seconds, but do you think anyone, anywhere, can make a decent, semi-affordable DL-44 blaster? Nevermind an E11 that is actually for sale and not in the Nerf colour scheme. (Rant over 😉)
Yea at $2k i don't think i'll be buying one anytime soon. Not that i couldn't, but they should take a note from medieval weapons merchants and make a variant more reasonably priced.
Wait, a cave party?! We need an explanation here. Yeah don't bring the metal one to a con, you'll definitely end up in jail 😂 😂 Anyway, i really need a laser cutter or something, to make those little plates. We don't really have anywhere to order a photoshop design or anything, that's only for big companies.

The metal spike end pieces of the stick reminds me of those old lawn dart toys we used to have (before they were deemed unsafe :P).

I had a real totokia (sp) with a welded steel blade on the end. Deadly as hell, and pretty hefty. These replicas are nice!
Adam, anyone ever mentioned your workshop is turning into the warehouse at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark?
Awesome review can’t wait to get this

Looking forward to seeing them weathered!
I was a raider for Halloween one year. The eye pieces we made from toilet paper rolls that we painted to look metal
I smell a one day build coming where Adam replicates the replicas.
I actually laughed when you were tightening the spike on the resin version. That weird squeaking noise sounded like ducks quacking!!
