Well the STAX LP700s, Audeze LCD-X/3 , Focal Elear (and many others) sound MUCH better than a pair of HD650s, like literally two different worlds. I haven't heard the Sennheiser Orpheus before, but if they truly surpass headphones like Focal Utopia, Audeze LCD-4 and STAX SR-009 (all $4-5000 cans) then I think they're worth every penny to someone who makes $50,000 a day (many people do)

Doesnt matter. Great headphones would make your mp3s sound amazing too. Headphones dont make you able to hear the difference between MP3 and lossless. Thats snake oil. The human ear cant hear the "lost" part of lossless, its humanly impossible to hesr what mp3s compress. Nevertheless countless ABX tests show even with the best equipment, people cant tell the difference either. The whole FLAC thing is all snakeoil.
The ABX tests are done with 256kbps (itunes) and not 128kbps, admittedly 128 is a little worse, but even that's scientifically questionable. Great headphones and amps like this will only make 128 mp3s sound better. Thats it. Dont buy the lossless hype, theres no science behind it. ALL the science, from tests to actually human ability to hear, prove MP3s are indistinguishable. What audiophiles "hear" is selection bias.
MrAhuraMazda187 with denon ah d 7000 (headphone) I can hear difference between 128 and 192 kbit/s starkly. I also say you, that apple aac format (256 kbit/s) sounds better than mp3 320 kbit/s. My further insight: loudspeakers stand no chance against headphones (especially if you observe price-performance ratio)

@@andreasxfjd4141 i too can hear the difference from 128 and 192. 192 to 256 is a lot harder for me and 256 and lossless is humanly impossible. I taken so many tests on this using my dac, amp and all my high end headphones and to me, 256 is the limit of where the detail just cant be picked up. And science supports me. All the measurements show ALL the "lost" frequencies are well above the human ear. The science just doesn't support lossless. 256 or 330 is just as good.

checked them out myself in the local music store. Amazing experience. I felt like standing right next to the musicians. The vocalist was singing IN MY HEAD! He was so real it was spooky. And none of it is enhanced. It truly was an audiphile experience!

The thing about going up to 100000Hz is a little bit misleading, because everyone always goes 'well we can only hear up to 20khz' so whats the point? A frequency respone much outside that of human hearing, means the response curve for the portion of sound that we can hear is much flatter and less distorted.

Obviously when you push the limits of what we can achieve with headphones, a line will be crossed where any further improvement will increase the price by too much for anyone to be considered "worth the money".

Alright you people, don't think of these as a product, because let's be realistic, Sennheiser didn't develop these to turn a larger profit than their other headphone lines. These are simply a technology demonstrator, like the original Orpheus, a way of sending the message to other high end headphone manufacturers that they are still top dog, and haven't lost their edge. That's it. They cost 50 grand because Sennheiser pulled that number out of their ass, for shock value. And I have no issue with that, as they make plenty of other very good headphones for very good prices. So let them do their thing, as long as they still make good products that are affordable, there is no harm done.

Also that would mean you'd generally have to actually buy a theater to get similar audio quality.

in the studio we use an hd800s and that is a very good and detailed headphone but when i compare it to the he1 at home the hd800s is suddenly a bit muted like there is a blanket between me and the soundstage and the he1 is just insanely clear and detailed. also most of the time its not being used for the headphone aspect but the pre amp for the big system since its an great preamp

It's well known that live performance is often so much worse than studio quality audio. For the sake of ear enjoyment, the 50 000 $ would be well spent on the headphones. Plus they can last decades.

I was lucky enough to get to listen to the original Orpheus headphones at a hifi show and had a very similar experience the experience was incredible having to take them back off knowing i would probably never hear anything else as good again is why the short demo is never long enough. As to wither i would purchase if i had the money that's a very easy yes they are by far the best musical experience I have ever had on any hifi at any price and I've listened to some incredibly expensive hifi's

Im of the same state of mind, like, if money isint an issue for me, i would get these, they look fantastic and they outpreform our own ears to the point that we cant actually hear how good they really are, but at rhe same time its headphones, i have a 100$ pair i bought and thats i will ever need, their comfortable, and make a great experiance, however irl paying 50,000+ for anything other than a house makes me cringe, its not worth it in my opinion but if money is no problem... then sure

$50K is pretty high for an all-in-one solution. The Yggdrasil/KGSS/SR009 combo sound pretty decent to me, but we're still creeping into $10-12K price range. The Orpheus FET amp built into the cans to help with signal loss and associated transmission effects is a nice touch, but perhaps not worth 35K to achieve.
Nothing beats electrostatics when it comes to precision in the details of music. I love my Stax headphones costing a tiny fraction of these.
Paying for quality is one thing, but there's nothing more shallow than paying a premium for artificial scarcity.

Point is: the reason Hotel California sounded as good as it did on those headphones is partially because they got the highest quality copy of it, perhaps made from the original masters. You have to use high quality audio files to justify expensive headphones, and you have to have expensive headphones to justify high quality audio files; one does not go without the other.
Lossless FLAC's and similarly high bit-rate audio is STUPID easy to find, and has been basically since Tidal started up. This is a total non-issue and hasn't been for FOREVER (not when you made this comment, and for years before that either). It's not the world's fault you use shitty Spotify or bad quality locally stored MP3's 🤷♂️.

They picked Hotel California solely because it's extremely widely familiar to almost every American adult, NOT because it's what they could most easily access in some "super duper, right from the studio masters vault" quality level. It would have just been a normal ol' 16-bit/44KHz lossless FLAC file, or maybe even the original CD itself (which in practice are basically identical).
Outside of the rise of MQA, which was only able to get its official "High-Res" certification (aka >16-bit/44KHz of Redbook CD/FLAC) from its legitimately HUGE increase in bit & sample rates (24-bit/96KHz packed, 24-bit/384 or 768KHz hardware unpacked) by controversially being inherently lossy; truly native "High-Res" audio basically doesn't exist anymore today than it did back then. Aka, I can basically GUARANTEE they were playing normal CD quality audio as their source. Nothing more, nothing less. 🤷♂️
