She's a true artist. Not only were the vocals epic and touching, she really knows how to draw you in with the story - and all the best singers are great storytellers too.
this performance shows what a marvellous interpreter Diana was at her peak vocally, so much emotion you can feel her pain, the “he beats me too…I hate that line” gives me chills everytime.
This is Diana at her peak vocally. This is not the same voice that gave you "Baby Love" She has never been given credit for the evolution of her voice. This Diana can sing anything with the best of em
Ok calm down. She’s had alright moments but listening to this and thinking she can compete with Barbara or Whitney who absolutely OWNED this song is just crazy.
I think she was the best she could be and I loved it! She is herself and it’s great! I loved her music and still do! Don’t compare, complain, criticize! She’s as great as she was ….foreverrrrrrr moreeeee
For those of you that say or have said that Diana can't sing, here's your rebuke. She could sing like very few could, really a master of her craft. UNDERRATED!
Her performance if My Man is so spectacular it's otherworldly! She put her heart and soul into it and there were tears streaming from her eyes. She's golden!
Listen to that vocal technique at 3:40 on the word "more." She sings "moooaaaaaoooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa" Perfection! Others come and go, but I always find myself appreciating Ross the most. Shame that more people don't recognize her immense talent. Those in the industry know.
@@mahoganyflame2000 No, I have basically just discovered this woman, and totally noticed her impeccable vocal phrasing live. She is awesome. She knew how to sing live.
This was an unexplainable moment, i don't like say this things but she touched me, i felt her vulnerability so much that i became vunerable for a moment. And it's not because she cried, though as i am human i must say it added some fuel to the emotion i felt. Ross with her lovely voice, her blues, and even belting. She's got her style and she stays in the right place, not too much nor less. It's so amazing how a person could have achieved that place. She's an extraordinary person, a living legend.
With me At 58, she's still my #1 female artist. A true Legend!! this is one of my favorite songs of many by Ms. Diana (Boss) Ross. I love me some her. ;)
because her greatest hits were poppish we forget that she really has an amazing, unique voice... this song really showcases her talents. And she looks gorgeous!
Thanks to Diana Ross' interpretation of Billie Holliday's music in "Lady Sings the Blues" an entire generation knows the words of the greatest jazz songs...
First of all Lady Sings the Blues came out in 1972, Funny Girl came out in 1968 and that film ended with Streisand singing it at the of the film and it became an iconic sequence well before.

Becky Yeager Smith you are right , thru LSTB Diana Ross introduced me to a world of songs and singers that has filled my life with great music. Leading of course with the sublime Miss Billie Holiday.
I've watched this performance ever since it premiered on HBO. I was stunned by it. Still "stung" by her effervescence.. A remarkable lady. I love you Miss Diana Ross..
*WHAT A FIND!!* I first saw this video and heard this song on an HBO special (I think?) when I was 12 years old. My parents were out at party and we kids were home alone, safely. The next day, my mom heard me humming it and asked where I heard it (cuz I had some parts wrong) .. I told her. She went in the 'record room' as we called it, and pulled out a Billie Holiday album. She played it for me and told me to write down the lyrics, and then tell her what I understood (I was only 12 - "he beats me too" line - she was concerned). I did, and we talked about it and we sang it together. My Mum had (and still has) a beautiful voice. Within a few hours I had it down. She told me when I was older, she'd REALLY tell me about Billie.. and she did. Been a fan ever since. But THIS is what started it! Thanks for the post, and the memory!
She ATE that and left no crumbs. Diana Ross been a legend, she was a triple threat in her era, and the class was just there. That concert she performing on the clip where she did a segment of Billie Holidays songs was sick and the venue and the stage, that is royalty ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️💯💯💯💯💯💯
The entire concert was one of Diana Ross's most celebrated concerts Barr none easily equal to the very heralded "An Evening With Diana Ross " concert just brilliantly executed ,on all points vocally, visually, staging, and production wise just a stunningly brilliant showwomanship. And it was original like none before nor since.
Peak Diana (1979-1980). This is from my favorite televised concert: Live at Caesar's Palace for HBO (1979). Just a beautiful performance!!! Blessings to this sensitive, lovely woman!
Mama was really feeling this song. All these years I've wonder who was she singing about. I've heard more than once she regretted her divorce from her first husband Bob Silberstein. I wonder if it's him........ Anyway, a great performance from Miss Ross. The lady is a treasure!
My Senior year in HS 1974 My Mother and I went to See Diana in "Lady Sings the Blues" we both loved the film and the next day I went out and bought the Album ... what an impression she always makes ...
Oh, my goodness, just saw her on 60th anniversary of Motown. She is still a bad girl. I loved her in lady sing blues and mahogany. The girl is a born natural, beauty and all. What memories and emotions she stirred up in Barbara. Thanks Diana
Saw this on HBO in 1979 and never forgot about it -- found it here couple of months ago. You can't watch this and not understand what a fantastic artist she is. You can also find here on youtube great performances she did with Michael Jackson, both in the Wiz and some nightclub-style song and dance stuff they did together.
Some have said that Miss Ross is a "weak vocalist." They need to hear this performance, and then they'll be shut down!! Her voice here is truly amazing.
1979, age 12 and mesmerized by this lady right here; Diana Ross. I remember recording this HBO concert and watched over and over! I'm unable to locate full concert on RUclips. PEACE
Here's the full concert of this song ruclips.net/video/BNO2vwNwzoE/видео.html. So happy to always watch this. Ms Ross' performance is beautifully amazing!
Sublime... she is brilliant... wish she would come back with an album.... why was he song so difficult for her at that point of her career... personal difficulties I suspect but that adds to the emotion
whitney and diana are in another level, i know there´s barbra, there´s dionne, gladys, patti, aretha, celiene etc... but those ladys, have something really special on her voices...
I strongly disagree wit whoever said 'so near perfect'- She sung this song perfectly! Diana Ross is a an impeccable songstress which means she brings life and emotion with her voice and interpretation of the song. The one thing I love about her now is she is having the time of life performing and her audience and large fan base feel it every time they attend her concerts or watch her videos. This is a stunningly polished singer with a great band and back up singers everyone having the time of their lives especially the audience. Don’t forget what a great Mother she is which she gives much credit to her own mother. Her kids are all successful and you never hear negative press about them. You can tell how much love they all have for her just watch the 20 20 Mother’s Day tribute presentation by Barbara Walters. I truly love this great singer artist and mother such a treat to have been on this journey as a great fan of hers over the years. Thank you Miss Ross you are the best and always do it with class.

what an absolutely incredible performance. No one can touch this song except Diana Ross. Now THAT is something very special and extremely rare. FANTASTIC!
She should have won a Oscar for Lady Sings The Blues. She was robbed. Played rhe hell outta that movie. I never cried 😢 so much only 10 yrs old when came out
You can see that Ms. Ross is an expert performer. She did not have to take her clothes off, nor does Ms. Ross have to shake her body to sell her music, unlike the young entertainers of today.
I mean, no one HAS TO DO that. People do what they want to do, what makes them happy, what they feel good at. If it makes people uncomfortable, that's fine. Plus Diana Ross wasn't ashamed of how sexy she was, she'd show some skin. People can be talented AND sexual.

But lowkey when she performed baby love live, it sounded fucking amazing

When Baby Love came out she was often high during performances. Love Child used to be my favorite back in the day performance with The Supremes.
