I remember playing FEAR for the first time last year and had tons of fun with it. I wanted to continue with the rest of the series but after playing a few hours of FEAR 2 I was very disappointed and felt no need to continue.
I actually do still view F.E.A.R. as a classic and one of the best examples of the shooter genre from that era. I don't know what 'generation' it counts as, but that game to this day has the best gunplay I've experienced in a shooter. I also think the level design is stellar because it goes hand in hand with the excellent enemy AI. The encounters are as thrilling as they were because of all the various parts coming together. I'm happy to see a retrospective video on one of my favorite shooters!
I absolutely can not disagree more about the horror aspects of this game. F.E.A.R. is far scarier than most "horror" games that come around now a days. Complaining about controls? You kidding? Fear has some of the smoothest controls of a shooter I've played. Especially with with mouse aiming. Headshots are not hard to get and really aren't that important either. Just aim for the chest in this game. There's also no visual glitches like he claimed there were. I'm going to assume he played the console version which was a bad port. Complaining about the particle cannon? YOU HAVE A GUN THAT FIRES LASERS AND TURNS PEOPLE INTO LITERAL SKELETONS. WHAT THE FUCK IS NOT TO LIKE. This video is filled with such annoying opinions that I can not disagree with harder. If you want to see how the game is properly played. Check out the playthrough I did on extreme difficulty. I've played this game to death.
Thank you for this video :) It's always a pleasure to find someone new talking about video games ( and with a decent audio quality ). I'll be back for the next one.
This is a really good video. Points are articulated well and the presentation is great. FEAR was one of my favorite FPS's in general. I'm not much of a horror fan but it still made me keep coming back to it until I finished it. The following FEAR games weren't as good as the first but they weren't bad. Also the sexy time with ghost girl was a bit weird, weirdest nerd boner ever. Liked and subbed you for support, keep up the good work buddy! :D
I don't agree on a number of points, like the horror elements or some of the arsenal, but this is a great video. I think if you spoke faster, it would be even better-- you've got a great voice, and I get you're taking the time to make sure each word comes out clearly, but a little more momentum in the narration would make a big difference. Still, though-- solid videos, great game choices.
FEAR should have been about multiple different cases, not 100000% about alma's story. That's what I thought it's gonna be seeing the name and premise..
I bought this game with the two expansion packs in early 2007... played the whole thing through last week... and damn, this game is a fucking masterpiece... it is easily my favourite shooter game of all time, even better than HalfLife2, simply because of its amazing AI and amazing combat... the scares are useless after the first playthrough, but the combat (especially on Extreme Difficulty) never gets old... NEVER... this kind of combat has never been done before FEAR and never ever will be done again.. and yes, the sequels suck... they took the FEAR name, and slapped it over average console ports, forgetting what made the game so great in the first place...
This is very awesome man. Strikes a lot of the same points I think about when I play the first one. I really feel like the second and third just dropped off the map, sadly.
No mention of the sick kung fu moves you can do? Anyways, I too played the game for the first time just a year or two ago long after it came out and I mostly just felt misled by it. The name itself, First Encounter Assault Recon, led me to believe I was going to be part of a swat team tasked with dealing with the paranormal which sounds incredibly cool. But that's nothing like what the game's about. Instead it's just about a telepathic guy who controls a bunch of military clones and so you just fight soldiers the whole game. I was also led to believe that I would be be scared, but it's not scary at all. You quickly learn that every single paranormal encounter is 100% scripted and 100% harmless (besides the ghost things, but those were just stupid enemies that walked straight at you). Because of this I was just bored throughout all the hallucinations and stuff, and that's a shame. But Jesus, the gun play. Like he said, it's so incredibly visceral and satisfying. I played on the hardest difficulty without using slow motion because that made the game stupidly easy and it was a fantastic challenge. You can tell the AI cheats at points, but the fact of the matter is that realistic behavior is very hard to simulate and well done fake realistic behavior is a pretty good substitute. Sure, the AI came out of cover immediately when you turned around and could teleport on occasion, but the things like that really kept you on your toes, even if it was a slightly disingenuous way to get you to do that. Also, that dust feature he mentioned from hitting walls is brilliant. I've never seen it so pronounced in a game before, and firing blindly to try to stay alive is so intense. In short, I came out really liking the game, but for none of the reasons that were advertised.
superuber27 AI never teprort man and don't use any cheating. The fact that you call them "cheaters" because they are outsmarting you is just hilarious.
Max Galehmatov I wasn't exactly sure whether or not they could teleport and I certainly don't remember any specifics about it now, I wrote that comment more than a year ago. I do remember that on many occasions it felt like the AI knew things it shouldn't pertaining to my location and orientation and reacted instantly, essentially "cheating" by having the game tell them information they shouldn't realistically have access to. But anyways, do you know for a fact that they don't cheat? Show me a source that shows that they don't, that's better than insulting my skill level which neither has any bearing on the points in my comment nor has been presented in any way for you to observe and therefore judge. I played the game on the hardest difficulty and without slow mo because I enjoy a good challenge, I accused the AI of cheating not because I'm butthurt about losing but because I thought they were cheating lol.
I think I figured it out, the ones with the most views are generally titled with "Thoughts: " or "Talking backwards - " Maybe they show up in eachother's related videos more often or something.
Cee Marshall Reddit's the answer-- you got pretty high on the front page of r/games for a while. When your analytics for the last few days come back (in another few days or so), be sure to check the views from external sources graph in your traffic sources section. Analytics will show you exactly where all your views are coming from.
I have to disagree with some of what you said... firstly fear is totaly 100% thought of as a clasic and it's a.i. is ledgendary at this stage.... the lighting in the game was amazing and the sound design was awesome..... level design was exactly what was needed for the ai to shine..... A remastered edition of F.E.A.R. with modern textures and a 64bit engine with all the post processing of today's games but keeping the gameplay the same as the original would be awesome.

FEAR 2 was a good game but god damn was it such a downgrade from FEAR.
I must be strange because I liked second FEAR more than first. Third FEAR was awful...
I replay F.E.A.R. at least 2x a year lol. Best shooter ever made.

+Noah Caldwell-Gervais What do you disagree with?

SHIT!
Yep, FEAR definitely has its place with other horror games of the time that were completely shafted by their sequels. Condemned comes to mind.
This is very awesome man. Strikes a lot of the same points I think about when I play the first one. I really feel like the second and third just dropped off the map, sadly.
fears horror is fun imo, and was even more fun in fear 2. both were made by the original dev, and are good imo. fear is a classic.
i miss spent casings in games that dont vanish while hitting the floor
FEAR almost seemed like a continuance of Blood to me the game feel style ect. loved both
At 5:55. With Vsync turned off. You won't be experience any input lag. At least I didn't.
First one was definitely scarier, but giving sequels a bad name? They were quite good in my opinion.

*teleport. It moves fast and trying to but you are just blind and have 0 situation awareness.

Why doesn't your gun bob? That's fucked up. Must be a glitch.
How come some of your videos get like 200 views and others get 2k, what's the difference between them?
I wish I had an answer to that question...
I think I figured it out, the ones with the most views are generally titled with "Thoughts: " or "Talking backwards - " Maybe they show up in eachother's related videos more often or something.
