  • Amateur guide on how to replace the sensor mat on a 2004 BMW E61 E60 5-series.
I didn't wanna just bypass the sensor with resistors and diodes. It didnt feel right to do that so I got the genuine spare part from BMW and replaced it.
This operation took me 3.5 h to complete whilst fiddeling around with the camera.

Some of these were recalled. Worth checking. Mine was in a 2005 X3.

Dealership told me that too. They said someone else replaced it already, but didn't put in the recall database that it was fixed.
I don't believe they took apart to the seat in 1-1/2 hrs to tell that the part had already been replaced. I hate dealerships !!!

Hello there, thanks for the great video. Did your SRS light stayed on when your seat pressure sensor failed? I'm having a problem that the passenger belt light is on when no passenger and the SRS stays on.

What part number did you use for the seat mat sensor?

Thanks for this. Just curious, the original mat failed in my E90 at just 20k milage (first 2 yrs), how is this replacement holding up for you? Any better than the previous one?

Did you check the plugs/connections first? After browsing a bit, other people said they fixed theirs by replugging. Just sayin...

I have replaced my mat. Bought the mat from the BMW dealership (got a discount since I work at another dealer). After replacing it, code was still there. Went to go clear it but Everytime I clear it, the. Ode pops back up. Do I need to take it to the dealer to get it calibrated, or is the mat already defective? Thanks!

Johnny Kamacho Did you ever find a solution? Two weeks ago, I took my BMW e53 to the dealer as they were to fix the airbag sensor mat recall. The serviceman told me that they had trouble programming of the new sensor mat and that I would have to pay to get a new Airbag Sensor Module for $1,200. When I got the car back, the airbag light was on and it had never been on before. I believe the recall fix actually created a problem in my car and I don't think I should be responsible for paying for it.

      you need to code it

butuc gabriel Coding may not work. I had the dealership put in a new seat mat (which they offered to do). They said they coded it and the fault code pops up. The airbag light was never on before. Now, my seatbelt sensors don't even work. They screwed up my safety system.

yes it is possible they damaged some connectors but they are the ones that need to sort it out of course

butuc gabriel Thank you. They are denying responsibility and making up all kind of lies. I'll probably have to sue them in court.

3.5 hours and a part that costs hundreds of dollars, or $12 and 10 seconds to simply make the airbag work regardless of the weight in the seat (so the airbag works)... hmm, yeah, you made the right choice lolololol

FOR THOSE WHO ARE WONDERING YES!!!! YOU DO HAVE TO HAVE THE CODE CLEARED VIA A BMW OBD 2 COMPUTER NOT THE AUTO STORE 20 DOLLAR CHEAP ONES!!!!!
ALSO BONUS ADVICE: go to your local salvage/ junk yard and take a knife or blade and just cut out a mat from a same year model car, I personally replaced me e93 (convertible 2011 bmw 328i) with a sensor from an e92 coupe. Mats are able to be used on either passenger or driver, it does NOT matter! Total job cost me 7usd. Got code cleared by random local import shop because it only takes 2 min for them to do it and they'll usually do it to keep you as a customer! So call your local shops to get it cleared free! Screw bypassing it get it legit fixed less than 10usd

try ecstuning.com or fcpeuro, thats where i found mine for my 2008 e90

my e90 just did this, had a heavy box on the passenger seat a few days ago and now the light just came on. What a stupid f***ing feature, just keep the airbag active whether there is someone sitting in the seat or not, your car is going to be totaled anyway, who cares.
