    I wish more sport-oriented cars would focus on throttle response instead of chasing big peak power numbers. It's impressive that peak torque comes early and stays through most of the rev range though.

      Yeah, for this I really do think they did shoot for that, but obviously a turbo engine will be at a disadvantage with regards to response vs NA.

    I just realized, when a company redesigns a car completely, people call that car undeserving of the title (the Supra and the GT-R are the ones I hear most about this). When a company decides that they don't wanna stray too far from what the target market already likes and builds up on that platform, people say there's not enough improvement. I guess fanbases of all kinds are just shitshows lol, personally I like the new Z because it looks like the 1st gen one. But tbh I like a lot of things and don't ever really hate anything/anyone.

    • @colehartel7206
      @colehartel7206 2 года назад +1

      I don't know. I'd say in this case they've definitely gone too far in their attempt to give the target market what it likes. The new tail-light design being such an obvious homage to the Z32 suggests the designers weren't given much instruction beyond "People love retro, so give us more retro!"

      Dan I agree overall the car is great for what it is. My biggest issue is how they moved the price around and it ended being way more expensive then 1st advertised. I wanted the NISMO which is coming but now at a price point of $65+ which is insane so I passed and just got 18’ TT RS. F it if I’m going to spend it it’s going to be on something nicer and faster at that price for a non-GTR Nissan lol!! These companies are crazy and I bet if it doesn’t sell well they’ll cancel the NISMO 🫤! I was at the 2 year mark waiting on this car glad I picked my TT RS that’s 100% for sure.

The 86 is what my gut is telling me I'm most attracted to overall, i love the looks of the new gen and it really seems like the most well-balanced car that will be on the market over the next few years. I've never been someone who cares about numbers or straight-line speed (EV's have won that battle, we all need to just enjoy the ICE cars while they last)
      The new z has a lot of appealing aspects, mainly being that it is turbocharged. I just love the forced induction element of the z, and that is my only uncertainty with the 86. Will it satisfy the little speed desires that i have....
      its just the negative reputation of Nissan and how incredibly heavy it is (compared to the 86), that is making me turn away from this car

    It was a bit insane to see wheel hop feeding back to the shifter so violently around the 5:25 mark. I have not experienced that much in any car, even in sports cars that are much more raw. I'd be thinking there was a broken engine/transmission/rear mount if I felt that on any of my current sports cars. Could be something as simple as lousy tires or soft suspension/driveline bushings, but it makes me wonder how they have the driveline mounted to allow so much movement to feed all the way back to the transmission and shifter.

Although now I’m spoiled by the 991.2 911, that Z was by far, the best performance, looks, fun value of them all. That was especially true during the first few years of its long production run. It took others a decade to pass it for performance per dollar.
      At this price point, looks to me, like they’ve done it again.

    I was hoping the price would be lower, considering it's really a modified 13 year-old platform with a swap to an existing corporate engine. @Asiansxsymbol 2 года назад +18

      You're tripping. 🤣 The new Z is significantly updated/improved and it's cheaper than a base Supra, Golf R, and as cheap as a Civic Type R. You're just poor! Btw, the average price for a new car sold in America nowadays is $44K. 40K these days ain't nothing! When I purchased my new S2000 back in 2003, it was $36K out the door. That money = over $50K today ($56K to be exact). 😏 A brand new 300ZX in the '90s would cost about $70K in today's money. 😏

      You're better off buying a Civic Si or another sub $30K car. 😏 A loaded GR 86/BRZ is $35-36K. Why do you think this new sports car with 400 hp should cost the same as those? 😏🤣

    • @Asiansxsymbol
      @Asiansxsymbol 2 года назад +4

      Btw, the VR30 is derived from the legendary VR38 - the QUEEN of imports. It is much better than the old VQ engine. The new 9-sp auto is sourced from Mercedes. Everything else has been significantly improved or modified. 😏

    • @hartsickdisciple
      @hartsickdisciple 2 года назад +27

      @@Asiansxsymbol I've owned 4 Z-cars, including a 370z. This new car is very much a 370z at it's core. An engine swap, a couple suspension tweaks, and some new bodywork doesn't change that. Let's see some track tests versus the Supra, Mustang, Camaro, etc...
      You can buy a brand new Mustang GT or Camaro LT1 for under $40k, even in the current inflated market. They both have significantly more than 400 horsepower, and come with an LSD standard. The Supra is overpriced because it's really a BMW. Nissan is making a mistake by pricing the Performance spec Z so close to the Supra, since it has a more premium interior, and is a more modern platform. A parts bin car like the new Z needs to be a lot cheaper.
      The VR30 is a good engine, but it's nothing exceptional. It uses an open deck design, and small turbos. The B58 in the Supra uses a closed deck and a larger, single twin-scroll turbo. It's a stronger platform with more power potential.
      You have no idea how much money I make, and you sound like a jackass calling strangers poor on the internet. I make substantially more than the average earner in this country.

      I wouldn't mind. The roads in the US are such crap, it gets old feeling every single pavement change, especially when the local DOT nerds take an 8th grader approach to some of the surface resealing efforts where it looks like snakes running all over the place. Overall, if they preserved the compliance in the back end = win. One thing I've always loved about the 370z, is that even stock, the backend will stick over uneven pavement/pavement type transitions. I'm sure the new Z will garner even more of an improvement with an aftermarket front swaybar to help with body roll. I'm not a fan of lowering vehicles as I actually use them in all sorts of conditions.

    The engine mounts need to be more compliant for a V6 vs. a straight 6 because a straight 6 is inherently balanced whereas a V6 vibrates because it isn't balanced. The engine mounts used for a V6 aren't especially compliant, the shift knob will vibrate just the same as the engine if the shifter is mounted directly to the transmission case. I'm not sure whether I would or wouldn't want the shifter to not be mounted directly to the transmission case. I suspect that this will effect the preciseness of the shifting. I'd prefer to eliminate the need for the highly compliant engine mounts, and the way to do that is to use a straight 6 instead of a V6. It's all about tradeoffs because the V6 is more compact and allows better control of weight distribution. But, since the straight 6 is practically free of vibration, you don't need compliant mounts, which means that shifter isn't going to move around in relation to the chassis even if the shifter is mounted directly to the transmission case.
    I don't think there is any way to avoid wheel hop in a vehicle prone to wheel spin. When you have traction the vehicle accelerates and the weight transfers to the rear, compressing the suspension springs. When the wheels abruptly lose traction, acceleration drops abruptly and weight shifts from the rear to the front. With less weight now on the rear wheels the loss of traction is even greater, which makes the loss of traction sort of a binary affair. With less weight on the rear wheels the springs expand, slowly in comparison to time needed for traction to go from full to whatever. Unless there is traction control involved, you won't ordinarily regain traction unless/until you slightly disengage the clutch and/or let off the accelerator pedal. Meanwhile, as the springs continue expanding, the rear squat that had settled in during the interval of hard acceleration subsides. Due to the inertia of the chassis, the rear of the vehicle moves higher past the normal, at-rest height, and then falls to the at-rest height and possibly beyond. As the rear of the chassis falls, the spring compresses and the contact force at the contact patch increases. Traction recovers, acceleration recovers, the weight transfers to the rear again, the suspension squats and everything is fine for a few hundred milliseconds until the wheels abruptly lose traction again and the cycle repeats. Stiffer springs and shocks may help, but if so, the reason that a stiffer suspension helps is that rear squat is reduced. The extra stiffness needed to significantly reduce rear squat can be so great as to make the ride very uncomfortable. Obviously grippier tires will make a big difference.

    Most say hydraulic power steering is the best steering assistance for sport oriented car due to can have more direct feel of the steering relative to the road conditions. But for me, im not very fan of hydraulic is due to extra maintanence to take care of on top of the must-do regular maintainence like engine oil, coolant etc, also need to take care on the harden rubber tube, extra attachment on the engine etc. So, my pov is steering shouldnt need power assist, aka pure mechanical steering like the 80s car, which is the best when from let say 20mph or above for best road feel or tyre feels. EPS (eletric power steering) can fit the bill when come to variable power assist, the steering will be power assisted when the condition is needed especially stationary turning, also if can the EPS somehow can "tune" such as cut off power at certain speed to have best control of the road. Although both hydraulic and electric can do the trick but i would prefer EPS for lesser hassel.

      @BigHeadClan 2 года назад +2

      I mean your comparing a light weight and much smaller mid-engine car to the Z, the Porsche is all but guaranteed to be the better
      of the two. That said the FM platform was ahead of its time and the recent update should let it remain competitive with the segment.
      Which isn't to say the Z is bad, its going to be a really fun car to drive without question.

      I'm sure it will be better then previous Zs, but I doubt it will come close to the modern engineering behind a Porsche.

    At 5:23 is it normal for the gear lever to shake that much when launching the car? I can hear that it’s from the wheel spin but it looks like a lot of lateral movement

    • @EngineeringExplained
      @EngineeringExplained  2 года назад +7

      Ha, yeah, seems like a lot. You'll notice even more in my video intro (watch my arm!). I think one thing worth mentioning is we have a direct linkage here, as the transmission sits right under the gear shift. If you had a FWD vehicle with cable driven shifter, you probably wouldn't get as much shake, but it's also not as direct of a connection.

      The soft rubber they use for the diff and rear suspension are questionable. All it would take to fix, is some poly diff mounts, a diff brace and maybe even poly subframe mounts. Its been this bad on all Z's.

    C'mon man, turbos don't steal so much power to make power.
    They're also kinder to a manual drive train during up shifts due to the slight lag building the torque load steadily.
    Automatic track car... don't even go there 🙂

    Thank goodness Nissan made this because it forced Toyota to do something with the Supra. I hope Nissan sells enough to make an impact in the sports car market.

    • @BigHeadClan
      @BigHeadClan 2 года назад +1

      I hope for as many sales as possible, but the new Z is pretty much already paid for its co-developed alongside the G35/37 and now Q50/60.
      Which isn't to say it didn't cost Nissan money to bring it to market but they don't need to sell that many to get a return on the investment.
      Thats one of the big reasons why the 300ZX became the G35 and 350z so Nissan could build a dedicated sports car and then offset the R&D
      Cost with a luxury vehicle that sells at higher volumes and margins.

    this is the first "modern Z" where it actually feels like the design team was doing a modern take on the classic Z cars, the 350z was just a rebagded Infiniti because they decided to bring back the Z car nameplate and wanted to do it cheap, the 370z was just an evolution of that and pretty much the same with the body of the R35, none of them felt like evolutions of the classic designs

    I think the battery voltage gauge is a throwback to older sports cars. It was a lot more necessary back then due to much less reliable electrics.

    It's a sports car. Why do they charge you $10,000 extra for "sport tuned suspension"?

    • @EngineeringExplained
      @EngineeringExplained  2 года назад +2

      I'm confident that's marketing language to inform you they do have differently tuned suspensions. I drove the Sport as well, and didn't notice a major difference in the suspension.

    Flat torque curve is only good for fuel efficiency and pure performance. It takes away the anticipation of the peak excitement at 7 k rpm. Robbing the driver the dopamine surge.

    fun fact: the performance is actually governed higher due to its rear wing. its a case similar to the first gen audi TT where the little wing actually improves downforce quite a lot, allowing higher top speeds

    • @poguemahone5476
      @poguemahone5476 2 года назад

      TT wing was added to easily identify the cars that had had the recall work done because the first cars kept killing people from terrible handling. They changed suspension, added ESP and also changed diff settings iirc. They were also terribly built and had dodgy electrics which Audi only addressed after a huge mass lawsuit against them where they would've had to refund or fully repair every single car if they lost. Absolutely terrible POS car, but VAG have strong marketing and expensive lawyers keeping the brand squeaky clean in the publics eyes.

      If you like the 370Z, this is a better version of it. It's a little heavy in my opinion, but it stays true to the Z line. Personally there are cars in this price range I prefer over it, but props to Nissan for making it, and making it themselves. I'd take this over a Supra or STI, but I find cars like BRZ, Miata, or even Type R to be more engaging.
