Drove the automatic one for a couple of days for my birthday. I can say it is amazing, I actually respect BMW even more. Congrats on the stickshift one!
I own a BMW M2C so my knowledge is very limited, but my good friend just bought a new manual Supra A91 edition here in the States and I was impressed in my short drive. I cant imagine picking the Z as it's just a new body on the old 350 platform. It is cool that it's being produced along with the new Supra though.
idk they made the Z sound a lot more "heavily modified" than it actually is. It basically has a tune and an exhaust. Adjustable control arms and a couple of bushing inserts are not making any noticeable difference to lap times. So in reality I'd call these things pretty close when it comes to meaningful modifications and the supra costs a lot more to begin with. I'm a fan of both cars so not being biased here (I owned an A90 supra for 2 years)
@@r6scrubs126I would say coil overs and an EcuTek tune compared to a piggyback tune is a massive difference. It’s not just bushing inserts and control arms 😂
As someone who has owned both, I really felt the Supra was the superior vehicle all around. The Z was nice to drive, but suspension was much softer than the Supra. Only thing I felt the Z had over the Supra was interior space. The Supra felt a little cramped and I had to watch my head getting in and out of the vehicle (I’m shorter at 5’5”).
@@sigmaprojects yea I got learned to duck more than normal getting in/out of it. Thats the main complaint I've heard from friends that still have their Supras.

I mean BMW does know how to engineer a chassis, but the stock vs stock Z made more power and with mods Z was making 30 more HP. So, not sure about that point? They said draw because at the end of the day similar power to weight. But in the end they said they picked the Supra, they gave it so much praise and even said it's on stock suspension so has even more room to grow compared to the Z. So not sure what you mean Z hype stuff.
The big thing with the Z is the rear subframe, differential, front lower arm and steering rack bushings which are set up for touring. Once those are upgraded to Nismo or solid units in any Z or GT-R it really tightens things up, and doesn't really affect street manners too much (assuming the coilovers are up to the task and you're not driving around Pothole City). They can be had for less than folks think also from places like SPL Parts and can be installed over a weekend. Upgrading all the bushings essentially turns a Z/G/Q into a gokart!

The 2024 Z powertrain in a 240z is night and day. I hope to see the Z return to its original fashion soon, light, very fast, very agile and competing with Porsche.
I just think it’s as simple as an old Nissan FM platform introduced in 2001. While the bmw platform is 20 years new in comparison . In the 90’s no one would say a 1992 M3 is better than a R32 GTR . Obviously Nissan was able to put money in it.
Great video, the new zed from rear 3/4 is very 300 twin turbo, and those used to go hard when fettled (very difficult job) the 80A supra had its share of issues too, rattling hatch, blind spot. But which then is similar to now.. i would probably take a relatively stock Z4/Supra..I love that butt😂 but watching the Z showed that it's more of a driver's car, depending on experience.. Don't listen to the nay sayers/haters.. I've watched your stuff since ignition 1
I had a 2021 Black A91 Supra for 3 years, full Fi Valvetronic exhaust with carbon tips, Eventuri carbon intake, carbon Street Hunter wing and carbon mirror caps. 27k miles later, oil pump died, warranty covered it. But then I got a call from Nissan to go check out the new Black 2024 NISMO Z, after a test drive and the weekend to think it all over, I traded her in for the new NISMO. I will say I miss the loud pops and bangs the Supra got and the Aggressive looks it had, definitely a head turner. But the NISMO version of the Z takes things to a whole different level than the normal Z. I love both cars, I guess the NISMO was that shiny new thing that Nissan did a thing with, and I wanted that thing more lol.

It’s cheaper compare to buying a Supra that’s manual. 2 I like the nissan Z for keeping the Emergency brake handle the Supra is a push button. 3 I hate the fake vents on the Supra. The main reason is the price though. Here in AZ a Nissan Z 6 speed going for 44 msrp
So it's a sports car vs a sporty car? Clearly the spots car is better on the track in every way, the differences were very noticeable in the driving dynamics and steering input. The suspension on the z looked bouncy, so maybe too low compression damping? No wonder it has such bad traction. Why would you put drivability as a draw when it's the biggest difference between them? That aside, this was an awesome test! I love how you kept the money the same and tuned on each car in between runs to try to give them the best chance. This is much closer to what the real experience would be with owning these cars. Most channels do not do this, and will just lazily test something, as is, and call it a day, teaching us nothing useful.
Add these mods.. heat exchanger, 3 inch downpipe, cat back exhaust, CAI and Ecutek will see you hit 450whp If you want serious, horsepower gains for under 10K, add new turbos, a straight bolt on!
You can't take it as a direct comparison, but C&D lightning lap for this year had the M2 and it was a bit slower than the Supra from last year. Savagegeese also did a video that compares them and the Supra ran 2 tenths faster around the track on the same tires Jackie Ding who is a pro time attack racer with a 2020 Supra now has an M2 and he put down faster times in the M2 than his Supra did stock. (The 2020 had less HP and less dialed in suspension though) So it seems they're about even with each other in stock form with a slight edge to the Supra. Probably depends a lot more on the track, the driver's skill level, and transmission choice than anything else.
Nice comparison. Wonder if different mods would have a different effect and result. Maybe, maybe not. I do like the Supra but money is money and I really like my Z. But certainly needs some upgrades…
Thats a great comparison. Both cars I'd love to have. But I'd prefer the Z, mostly because of looks. I wonder how the Nissmo stacks up vs the Supra, they are bassically the same price.
I actually think the times would be closer or even in the z's favour on a more power focussed circuit. Seeing the brz net a lap time that close to the z proves that. As much as on paper the supra was quicker I still can't get past the fact that it's a BMW. Would like to see a comparison in 5 years between the two about their respective maintenance costs. All in all great content none the less 👌
I'd take the Z just because not as many people have em and they look great in that proto yellow, the supra are everywhere at thus point and you either love or hate the bmw under guts. Great for spec sheets but that pendulum can go either way. I like the vr30 platform for what it is but in today's market the Z flopped bad. Kudos to both automakers for giving us both cars though, I don't think anyone off the keyboard would gripe about really driving either one at the end of the day man
Didn’t you guys fit a softer street / drag coilover to the Z? Semantics I’m sure. It does look soft still around the drag. Both incredible cars. Hard to deny how good that B58 supra is. That steering wheel on the supra though. Gross 😊 Well done to Nissan for keeping it Nissan.
Shorter wheelbase helps the BMW. Personally, I'd have changed front and rear sway bars on the Nissan instead of arms. The Z is also tuned, so peak power and torque engagement points in the rev range didn't look ideal either. Gear ratios also seemed better suited to the BMW for this track. Turning ratio looked better on the Nissan in my opinion. Overall balance and chassis compliance was definitely better on the BMW.
@@Wiggy321sway bars would have made a massive difference, as they are so small stock. Steering input, and grip would have been massively improved. It’s a modification most people overlook.
I’m interested if you do more testing with the Z shocks and get something with better refinement and support. It sounds like they’re blowing through the travel.
I don’t think it’s about taste… sure you tested on the same tires and with approximately the same price build. I think the point is that if you have 400hp to start and 30k to spend on aero and suspension tuning you should be able to make a time attack machine that puts down faster lap times than a lightly modified sports car. Its just somewhat arbitrary to emphasize lap times in this comparison given the way you modified the vehicles
Supra is the easy winner. Looks, performance ceiling, engine, chassis. Looks so much better going around the track. Just way more stable, turn in looks 10x better.
A sharp twisty track... maybe on a track like Barcelona or even better mugello Italy the z could've done better... but the black n gold bbs looking wheels are better in aesthetics

OR though as this is the type of Guy I am I think in spite of the Z issues i would choose it JUST because of price point , AND either buy / exchange too some hi quality JDM coil overs in it or "BRAND NEW Bilstein" shocks / suspension , developed after the realise of the chassis for the BEST out come .... I just think it’s as simple as an old Nissan FM platform introduced in 2001. While the bmw platform is 20 years new in comparison . In the 90’s no one would say a 1992 M3 is better than a R32 GTR . Obviously Nissan was able to put money in it.
Great comparison, just what we needed
Correct answer: BMW. BMW makes the best RWD turbocharged coupe out of Japan
You nailed it Hawko
Z looked old school & Supra so refined 🍻👍🏼
There are cars with the Q platform with over 500+ horsepower at the wheels and had the cars for 4 to 5 years… a daily Drive
😢😢😢i gave up my nismo Z for a GRyaris. Love the GR. Nice to see you on the screen JB. Hope see you at Wakefield some time in the future.
Was about to pull trigger on Z in 2minds wats your biggest gripe I’m in a amg a45s atm
@@peterbiviano747 I think the car it’s a bit overpriced for what it offers. Coz I preordered the car long ago before it announced. Outdated interior for the price tag, Acceptable performance but not outstanding at the range. Also I need a back seat for baby. I was expecting the nismo to have more power and more refined interior. For this money I would get the RS3 just because i can’t fit myself in the Supra.
Scalpel meet blunt knife.
Good analogy.
Not the outcome I wanted to see or expected as the supra doesn't even use double wishbone suspension but I do really appreciate this video. Would love to see one on the supra vs c7 now!
With the limited amount of travel and great tyres simple Mac struts up front do deliver great feel and control. Predictable I’d call it . I’m addicted .
i dont really care which is better i just want the Z since it looks like a modern 240z
Great vid guys. I get a lot of stick for the cat having BMW dna but to be frank I drive alone on empty country lanes and could give a crap, it make me feel happy when I hoon around the lanes .
Great video was waiting for this
I’m still going to get the Nissan Z 6 speed. For a couple reasons.
Thanks for noticing that we take testing much more seriously. 👍
Add these mods.. heat exchanger, 3 inch downpipe, cat back exhaust, CAI and Ecutek will see you hit 450whp
If you want serious, horsepower gains for under 10K, add new turbos, a straight bolt on!
I wonder how these two compare to a C7 corvette with manual on the same tires….
So the Nissan wins because the Supra is Assembled in Austria
Z still got that infamous “trumpeter” sound! 😂
Have we compared an actual NISMO version to the Supra?
Would love to know how this supra goes against the latest stock, BMW, M2? Would be very interesting not much difference in price. 🤔
You can't take it as a direct comparison, but C&D lightning lap for this year had the M2 and it was a bit slower than the Supra from last year.
Savagegeese also did a video that compares them and the Supra ran 2 tenths faster around the track on the same tires
Jackie Ding who is a pro time attack racer with a 2020 Supra now has an M2 and he put down faster times in the M2 than his Supra did stock. (The 2020 had less HP and less dialed in suspension though)
So it seems they're about even with each other in stock form with a slight edge to the Supra. Probably depends a lot more on the track, the driver's skill level, and transmission choice than anything else.
And dare I say the Supra is better than the BMW that shares the platform? Hated the looks of the current Supra but gotta say they have aged well.
Nice comparison. Wonder if different mods would have a different effect and result. Maybe, maybe not.
I do like the Supra but money is money and I really like my Z. But certainly needs some upgrades…
We have half a clue what we're doing, as does Shockworks and DNA Autosport.
Pretty solid video
What steering wheel has been fitted to the supra?
Thats a great comparison. Both cars I'd love to have. But I'd prefer the Z, mostly because of looks.
I wonder how the Nissmo stacks up vs the Supra, they are bassically the same price.
Great video. I have watched it twice and didn't see John's times
Literally on the screen at the end of each lap
Fair enough. But why did you only read out your times.
Would be better if you had all the best times, on the screen at the same time
The lap time for John's laps come up on screen at the end of the lap.
The Z is ultimately a fun street car with track ability. The Supra is a track weapon.
Great stuff.
Honda Prelude soon
It would great if you guys bought a cheap B58 car like a 340i and made it a crazy horsepower machine like they are doing in the USA!
Power to weight ratio is same and The Supra is a weapon on large tracks. It would be worse for the Z
That does explain the sale drop in the Z because of how the Supra handles
And the all around better performance of the supra
I'd take the Z just because not as many people have em and they look great in that proto yellow, the supra are everywhere at thus point and you either love or hate the bmw under guts. Great for spec sheets but that pendulum can go either way. I like the vr30 platform for what it is but in today's market the Z flopped bad. Kudos to both automakers for giving us both cars though, I don't think anyone off the keyboard would gripe about really driving either one at the end of the day man
"Best out of japan" sorry. The supra came from Austria, not japan
Didn’t you guys fit a softer street / drag coilover to the Z?
Semantics I’m sure.
It does look soft still around the drag.
Both incredible cars. Hard to deny how good that B58 supra is.
That steering wheel on the supra though. Gross 😊
Well done to Nissan for keeping it Nissan.
The shocks are designed for the street.
The Supra is a German in Japanese clothes. Still a cool car, but not a true JDM.
in general a lot of hate for the supra. not refering to this video, i assume because of the BMW colab. The MK5 is an incredible machine.
Great content
Supra's chassis is so much more composed, and quicker steering looks like. Z needs better dampers, springs.
Zed all day. Doesn't suit the works tho. Take them off and go custom intake instead of the nismo youd save 4 or 5k
Sorry we didn’t build it to your specific taste instead of our own.
In aussie land, the price difference is huge. Not so much in the US. The Z proto costs as much as the gr supra
Supra is the easy winner. Looks, performance ceiling, engine, chassis.
Looks so much better going around the track. Just way more stable, turn in looks 10x better.
A sharp twisty track... maybe on a track like Barcelona or even better mugello Italy the z could've done better... but the black n gold bbs looking wheels are better in aesthetics
good video , Thanks👍
Cool video & novel comparison. Enjoyed that!
The ecutek tune has been out for a longer time now. Surely it can be pushed harder and have burnout mode redone properly
Great vid mate ! , .. "BUT also WHY I would choose the Z, Is Because its its A "NISSAN" and its own manufacture ........" NOT A MASH UP OF BRANDS" , As the "New" "SUPRA" is a mongrel mash up of TOYOTA AND BMW" , THUS making it a little hard to compare the two , As its like comparing THREE ! / NISSAN / TOYOTA / BMW
T or A if mods equalled them out on performance?? Which one do you want for the night?
Didn't a performance channel get the Z to 600hp with an E85 tune and stock internals? I think a lot more could've been squeezed out of the Z with all that had been done to it
Yeah, with another 20K worth of intercoolers and fuel system
@MotiveVideo sounds about right lol 😆
"I love driving my Supra with the radio up, the windows down, and the wind in my hair", said nobody ever. Fix the wind buffeting and it'll be a winner.
There’s a very cheap fix
That's almost 75K USD, that's a lot of bread for a Supra or Z but these are beautiful JDM sports cars.
Nothing has changed since day one. The supra is better in every metric. The debate should be officially settled.
People choose their favourite fat of emotion, not logic, hence so many arguments or excuses in comments
@@MotiveVideoMotive writes their comments off emotion instead of being realist. Y'all claim JDM and yet don't even know what JDM is lol. You will push whatever you think will sell period that's it y'all lost your spark a long time ago after abandoning your R35 with the VR38
Because the Z & Infiniti Q platforms are the same. They have been modifying the cars in America since 2016.
For daily driving the Z! Even with weird front it looks better than the Supra
So you put an ecutek tune on the Z but not the Supra... With nothing but a tune my Supra put down over 500wtq on 93...
Watch feature again and listen to the point of the exercise.
