EDIT 2: The following is a list of all of the largest inaccuracies presented in this episode. For a comprehensive list of inaccuracies, please see the comment posted by @seandwalsh3.
1.) Since this episodes creation, I have retracted my claim that Mario has any sort of vendetta against Luigi, and even in the case of this video specifically, I was mostly using it as a setup for comedic effect. There have been plenty of instances where Mario is very supportive of his brother, and I'm willing to chock up every scenario I cited as tough brotherly love.
2.) The Nintendo Character guide published in 1996 (of which I incorrectly cited as being published in 1993) has proven to actually be a very dubious source of information based on additional information that I have discovered and been informed of since this episode's release. Many statements in this guide directly contradict with other officially released material from Nintendo.
3.) All of Bowser's minions are a part of his army by their own volition. Through just about every Mario RPG, it is clear that they pledge undying allegiance to him. However, this does not mean they are treated with respect at all times.
4.) Larry is not the leader of the Koopalings. That title actually goes to Ludwig. The encyclopedia I got that information from was actually revealed to be horribly mistranslated. Additionally, the comic I referenced to outline each Koopaling's personality directly contradicts how they act within official games such as Paper Mario: Color Splash, and Minion Quest: The Search for Bowser.
As a final note, with this series specifically, the main focus will always be entertainment, which means whether or not something is "canon" isn't as important to me as that entertainment aspect. However, starting with the second episode, I now include a small visual indicator on screen whenever any information I cite comes from a dubious source.
I’m of the notion that New Donk City is Nintendo’s way of saying that Mario did work in a New York setting. In DK 94, the big city could very well be what New Donk City is today. Maybe something drew Mario and Luigi back to the Mushroom Kingdom.
The ending of Donkey Kong for the Gameboy actually takes place in the Mushroom Kingdom and established that Donkey Kong took place on the Mushroom Kingdom’s planet long before Super Mario Odyssey did. Donkey Kong Land followed suit a year later, with “Big Ape City” being only an ocean away from Donkey Kong Island.

@@zjzr08 I was under the impression the Paper games are retellings of things that actually happened in the main Mushroom Kingdom. As for a connection, I know Podley the barkeeper from Rouge Port is a Beanish, the race from Bean Bean Kingdom in Superstar Saga. I guess that's more of a connection to the M&L games though
@@richarddavis8863 I think they all could in theory, but the later games emphasize that the artstyle is diagetic rather than non-diagetic, that at the best, the characters heavy handidly break the fourth wall to not contradict what they are.

Amazing video so far but I'd actually like to challenge this method of thinking as it's absolutely contradictory to most instances of their interactions we see. Mario is much kinder to Luigi in most instances, whether he's taking the backseat or not. I'd argue he's more supportive than any other character
I disagree with your view on Mario being jealous of Luigi. Mario acts slightly differently in each series; in the 'Mario and Luigi:' series Mario is very supportive of Luigi like you said but you didn't cover parts like in Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, where Starlow mocks Luigi and Mario comes to his defence and sais something along the lines of, 'I couldn't of done it without him' (Starlow repeated what Mario said as Mario speaks gibberish) and in the 'Luigi's Mansion' series, he is proud of Luigi and dosen't mind him being centre stage, shown in the endings. It's my headcannon that Mario is grouchy sometimes after missions.

8:49 I definitely don't think this is the case as there are many moments in the franchise where Mario is very happy for his brother and his achievements, the ending to the Luigi's Mansion games I think are the best examples of this where even Luigi is taken aback by the praise from Mario. The Mario and Luigi games also showcase how strong their brotherly love is as well so I don't really understand where the sentiment of Mario having disdain for Luigi when he's successful comes from.

Ludwig has been stated to be the leader of the koopalings several times in games. Morton has also been shown to be the dumbest in many games. Obscure comics and books clearly can’t help here. Especially since most of them are non-canonical.

I actually run Marioverse, the internet’s largest Mario Lore community, and I’d just like to respond to a few things! I’ll use timestamps for reference:

Using old books, comics, TV shows, etc. when trying to piece together Mario Lore is certainly an interesting way of doing things - but personally I think for 100% valid, canonical material it’s best to stick to the Nintendo-published material. Other media like the Animated Series, Valiant Comics, 1993 Movie, etc. are obviously all entirely separate continuities made without direct supervision (or sometimes ANY supervision) from Nintendo themselves. There is more than enough lore in the games to cover without even beginning to consider non-canon material regardless.
It definitely makes for funnier content to include stuff like that, but I wouldn’t say it’s reflective of the actual lore. Perhaps it’d be worth mentioning the dubiousness of some sources in terms of canonicity like you did at [5:17] more often? Or even implementing an on-screen disclaimer of some kind? Just a suggestion, of course.

Well, Kamek’s concern is that the babies will bring disaster to the Koopa Family, which is exactly what they do in Super Mario Bros. (and beyond). They ruin Bowser’s plans, this is almost definitely what Kamek divined.
This same prophecy may be the one described in Super Mario Bros. Deluxe’s manual:
“It is said that only the daughter of the Mushroom King, Princess Toadstool, can break the evil spell and return the inhabitants of Mushroom Kingdom to their normal selves. But the king of the Koopas, knowing of this prophecy, kidnapped the lovely Princess and hid her away in one of his castles.”
Heck, it’s possible this prophecy is the reason Bowser sent the “Shellcreepers” after Mario & Luigi in Mario Bros., inadvertently leading them back to the Mushroom Kingdom (and sealing his own fate).

You show Mario Bros. (Game & Watch) on the screen here when talking about Mario’s work as a construction worker, but actually in that game Mario is working in a Bottling Plant (alongside Luigi). Easy mistake though!

The Nintendo of America Character Guide was actually published in February 1996, not 1993. common mistake though, since most articles that report about it got the year wrong too! Said guide is also filled to the brim with lore errors - not just for Mario, but for basically every other franchise represented too. Things like “Homo Nintendonus” or “Peach using magic on her clothes” are definitely not canon.

The New Donkers are no more Homo Sapien than Mario himself is, especially considering the fact that they average around 9 to 10 feet tall. According to Super Mario Odyssey producer Yoshiaki Koizumi in a 2017 interview, Mario is just a human - so are the New Donkers. They’re just different races, the Mario World is filled with many different kinds of people.

Mario & Luigi have an incredibly strong bond, as is shown pretty constantly throughout their adventures. Just a look at the Star Gate sequence in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, Dream’s Deep in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team or rest of the Mario & Luigi series to see this bond in abundance.
Mario Power Tennis does not feature Mario being malicious in any way to Luigi, I think you might be misreading the cutscene a little. In various canon material, for example the official manual for Super Mario Kart, it’s stated that Mario and Luigi have a friendly rivalry that stems back to their childhood. This applies to all of their sporting competitions. In Mario Power Tennis, Mario walks up, genuinely congratulates Luigi and then steps on his foot playfully. It’s just a little teasing between siblings, which is something that everyone with siblings does. It’s all in good fun.

Mario’s ego really isn’t fragile, especially not when it comes to Luigi. He fully supports his brother in everything he does. They’re the Mario BROS. for a reason. Mario is ecstatic and greatly congratulates Luigi when Luigi saves the day in Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon and Luigi’s Mansion 3.
In Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story, when Starlow finds out Mario defeated the Shroobs as a baby, she immediately accepts that and praises Mario. When Luigi insists he helped too, Starlow jokingly begins demeaning Luigi, asking if he attacked them “with some ferocious crying” (which is ironically kinda what happened).
However, Mario jumps in and insists that Luigi was the one to defeat the Shroobs in the end, despite it being a team effort. This goes directly against the idea that he doesn’t want to give Luigi any time in the spotlight. Mario clearly wants his brother to get recognition for everything he does.

Luigi is indeed Mario’s slightly younger twin brother. Obviously Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island and Yoshi’s New Island show that they were delivered to their parents at the same time, however in Yoshi’s New Island we also learn that before they’re delivered, babies are made in the “Stork World”. Mario was obviously the first of the twins to pop into existence way up in the clouds, making him the older twin.
The Encyclopedia is not the only place this fact is mentioned, by the way. It’s also mentioned in Super Mario Bros.’s 3DS Virtual Console description, Super Mario 3D World’s official website, the Mario Kart Wii manual, the Luigi’s official description on the Nintendo Co., Ltd. Website, Luigi’s official description on the Mario Portal Website, Luigi’s official description on “the Official Home of Super Mario” website and even in-game in both Super Mario Run and Luigi’s Mansion 3! Here they are, respectively:
“Mario's twin brother. Luigi helps his brother on his grand adventure.”
“Thanks to his lanky figure, Mario’s younger twin can leap higher than other characters.”
“He may be Mario's younger twin brother, but sibling loyalty is set aside on the race course!”
“Mario's twin brother!”
“Mario's younger twin brother.”
“Mario’s younger twin brother is a great guy, but he’s not exactly brave-and he’s really scared of ghosts!”
“Mario's twin brother is shy and easily scared, but that won't keep him from jumping a little higher!”
“The main character of this game and Mario's younger twin brother.”

Bowser has a variety of reasons for his villainy in the games, as a matter of fact. It’s not just that he can’t stand others being happy - it’s that he can’t stand those who disagree with him being happy. Bowser absolutely loves to see those who follow him being happy. He is truly a good leader to his people, and they adore him in return. It’s quite an interesting dynamic. (obviously this blatantly contradicts what the guide says at [15:08], yet again showing this guide is super dubious).
Bowser has always had goals of universal domination. Since he was a baby, he’s always wanted to rule everyone. He’s always wanted the power to make everyone do what he wants. When Bowser was a kid, Kamek never had the courage to tell him no. This carried over into Bowser as an adult, creating the Bowser we all know and love today. We’re actually even told in Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story that Bowser was guided by Nutsoglobin (apparently a physical manifestation in the body of “nuts” and “naughtiness”) to become evil. A little globin whispering evil deeds in a young Bowser’s ear.
If you ask me, there are three main reasons why Bowser usually invades the Mushroom Kingdom:
1. The Mushroom Kingdom, being the neighbouring land to the Koopa Kingdom, was the perfect place for Bowser to start his conquest. Once he had successfully conquered the Mushroom Kingdom, absorbed its land into his own territory and its people into his armies, it’s highly likely he would’ve moved on to other Kingdoms and done the same. The issue is that Mario and Luigi stopped him.
2. We even see that after that initial defeat Bowser attempted to take over other Kingdoms instead. First he tried the Mushroom World, then Dinosaur Land, then Jewelry Land - but every time he did Mario would arrive and defeat him again. Over time, this became personal. Mario became Bowser’s nemesis. New reason to attack the Mushroom Kingdom more frequently in Bowser’s eyes. Defeating Mario is a new priority.
3. And then there’s Peach. While Bowser seemingly didn’t have any feelings for the princess at first, only kidnapping her to stop her from reversing his magic and later to use as bait for Mario, after multiple kidnappings Bowser actually began to fall in love with Princess Peach. Yet another reason to attack the Mushroom Kingdom more frequently in his eyes. He can spend more time with the woman he’s become infatuated with.
As an aside, this is why I believe Super Mario Odyssey to be Bowser’s perfect plan. If he marries Princess Peach, he becomes the ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, makes Mario jealous and has the woman he loves as his wife. It ticks all three boxes for Bowser’s motives.

Bowser’s Army is all made up of volunteers. Again, Bowser’s people adore him and are willing to risk life and limb to fight for his cause. This is shown in basically every Mario RPG, and is even true going back to Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, where Bowser gives various minions his blessing to live their own lives, even after they betrayed him at a time when he needed them most. It’s clear that they’re there by their own volition and can opt out at any time. Their devotion to him is just too strong for that to usually be an issue.

Bowser (Blue), as he’s officially called as of now, is almost definitely not Bowser’s Brother. While we don’t know exactly who he is, all of the sources that have called him “Bowser’s Brother” have incredibly dubious canonicity. The games that take place in the past make it pretty clear that Bowser doesn’t have a brother either way.

The Koopalings are not Bowser’s Children. Not only are they not his biological children, but they are not his adopted children either. It’s been consistently stated that Bowser Jr. is Bowser’s only son (biological or otherwise), with the Koopalings just being young minions who lead his army. Yes, the Koopalings were originally considered Bowser’s biological children back when Super Mario Bros. 3 released, but that specific aspect of the lore has officially been retconned.
While we’re here, it’s unlikely that Bowser Jr. HAS a mother in the first place. Bowser Jr. was likely born after Bowser began having a crush on Peach, meaning it’s unlikely he’d have had another partner off-screen. As well as that, like you mentioned, Bowser Jr. and Baby Bowser are nearly-identical in terms of their physical features. Keeping in mind that babies are made magically and delivered by Storks in this universe, I think it’s pretty clear that Bowser Jr.’s only parent is Bowser. He’s essentially a generic clone of his father.

Said Encyclopaedia is known to have been horribly mistranslated, with the translators admitting online to have stolen information from the Super Mario Wiki and copy-pasted it into the book. It’s an unfortunate truth.
Larry is not the leader of the Koopalings, that title goes to Ludwig according to the games themselves. Here’s what the original Japanese version of the Encyclopaedia had to say about Larry:
“LARRY:
One of the 7 Koopalings, the special commanders of the Koopa Troop.”
Bowser Knows Best is part of the Valiant Comics (Nintendo Comics System) continuity, which is separate from the games like I mentioned before. The Koopalings’ personalities are actually incredibly fleshed out in the Mario RPGs, particularly in Minion Quest: the Search for Bowser and Bowser Jr.’s Journey. The way they’re depicted in the comic book largely contradicts the characters they are in the games.

We actually do learn a small bit about Peach’s upbringing through dialogue in various games.
According to Peach in Super Paper Mario, she was raised with moral values, teaching her to always help others in need. In Super Mario 64, it’s mentioned by a Toad that Peach played in the Rec Room when she was a little girl. According to Peach in Paper Mario, from a young age she was taught how a Princess should by the Toad Minister. And of course, we know that Grandma and Toadsworth were both very important parental figures in Peach’s life growing up.
On the Mushroom King, again the comics are an entirely separate continuity. The King hasn’t been around since Peach was a baby in the world of the games, which is why Peach is currently the ruler. It’s heavily implied that he and her mother are deceased.
All in all, really great video! I enjoyed it a lot! Looking forward to future episodes.

I’m regards to the non-canonicality of some of the stuff I mentioned, I do think it would be a good idea to include some sort of disclaimer for every instance of that. I still like mentioning tidbits of information from anywhere I can find purely for the entertainment value, even if it directly contradicts with something else, which I will always mention if I am aware of it.
Because of that, though, I’m still iffy on how much I even want to stick exclusively to the canon. The element of entertainment, stupid theories, and funny contradictions that come from pulling information from every avenue possible is something I really grew to like about producing this episode.

Bowser Jr.'s mother actually has been officially confirmed! They are none other than Shigeru Miyamoto.
Also, two more jobs Mario's had before potentially becoming a plumber are a solider (in Mario's Bombs Away on the Game & Watch) and a boxing referee (in the NES version of Punch-Out).
Due to the joking nature of Shigeru′s motherhood reveal, as well as it′s lack of further evidence or reference elsewhere, the canoncity of this fact is dubious at best. Also, Bowser Jr. would definitely know his mother if they were Shigeru Miyamoto.
My interpretation is that there's a Mario Multiverse, the primary three being the canon universe, the Doctor-verse, and the smaller sub-multiverse known as the Craft-verse, home to the Wooly World, Crafted World, and Paper-verse.
As for Mario's backstory, I think after the events of Yoshi's New Island, which is after Mario&Luigi Partners in Time, the stork finally finds the right parents, who move to New Donk City. Then the isekai-esque, happens, though it's not to another world but another country.
Also, I think Galaxy reset the universe, altering some events. Mario 64 gets replaced with Mario 64 DS, for example. The memories of the original timeline are still remembered after the fact, and the reset mostly serves to preserve the year-timeline. You cannot tell me everything post-Yoshi Series happened over the course of even a single decade.
Very interesting theories! Might have to explore these in a later episode…

Adding on, I don't consider Mario Kart Tour canon. I do, however, think the booster course pass is canon, and the real life tracks were signs of a "world diffusion," causing a second reboot, leading into the upcoming movie.

Yup. Mario's lore and worldbuilding in general is a lot deeper then most people realize. It's not just "Bowser kidnaps Peach. Go save her." Granted, that's the basic plot, but if you're paying attention to the background details, you'll understand that it's not that simple.

I would like to come back to this video and to uh, CLARIFY A FEW THINGS ABOUT BOWSER’S LORE LOL. The koopalings are not related to him, nor even adopted, Miayamoto never even said they were lmao. He just said that what they were going with the fact they are not his children, and if you played color splash, they were said to be Hired by Bowser. Next debunk is that Bowser’s minions love him, they have such admiration for their king, this was especially shown in Minion’s Quest and Bowser jr’s journey where they would all either save bowser and fight for the glory of him, or save their home/Bowser’s Kingdom. And Bowser cares about them, if he didn’t, he really would’ve never bothered saving them during the events of Bowser’s inside story, They are not forced, or mind controlled, they are just a loyal army and support his goals, now isn’t that sweet? 😊 And Larry is not the leader of the koopalings, in fact hes the opposite of a leader, not just from a player’s perspective, he’s actually pretty lazy lol, or he was shown to be as such. Despite Ludwig believing that he is, they are all just really a strong group of minions. It’s honestly just “whichever koopaling is around is the temporary leader.”

Weird theory but could Shy Guys secretly be Toads? They have similar heights and proportions and if this were true Luigi’s reactions would make complete sense. They also sound pretty similar, Shy Guys just sound a bit lower pitched.
While this does make some sense, it doesn’t really work since the mushroom tops are attached to Toads’ bodies. So unless there is some surgical mutilation that removes the tops (which seems a little too dark for Mario), then this theory wouldn’t work.

I can't remember what video it was but I figure I need to put it out there among the Mario fan crowd. In one of the timeline videos I saw on RUclips they tried to say that Super Mario Bros. 2 in the US was Mario's dream and not Canon to the main storyline and also said that Miyamoto said that Super Mario Bros. 3 was a play and therefore not Canon to the storyline either. The same video said that Super Mario World though was Canon. I know from the story in the Super Mario World instruction book that it takes place directly after Super Mario Bros. 3 since they are on vacation from that. For some reason though Toad does not accompany them but does have an appearance in Super Mario Kart.
I want sequel to current Mario movie involve Bowser's brother and wart team up to conquer everyone including Bowser's kingdom, so him and Mario must team up(could also be a foil to mario and Luigi's loving relationship)
