Hi thanks for the review. If you couldn't tell our mod was a bit rushed as sunshine was. Its kinda poetic as you point out lol. After 4 years of on off work on the mod our project lead JoshuaMK was like "were either finishing it in the next 6 months or we ain't finishing it at all because im ready to move on." We all kinda just hardcore grinded this mod out litirally all of us were sleeping 4 hour nights if not less 😂. Basically every level on Isle delfino as well as the open world changes was developed within the last 4 or so months of development (except erto rock and pianta pit which were in a half finished state prior to crunch mode so those ones werent that bad.), hell lighthouse was finished in the last week of development before being sent to playtesters. You'd be supprised but people's opinions on which stages are bad and good seem to vary wildly. Ive had people say redlily city was their least favorite 😂. The two things that seemed pretty consistent was people finding erto/warship repetitive and the slide in lacrima being admittedly pretty unpolished. I think you'll be happy to know that the slide level has gotten an face lift and a bit of a rework in this next major update and it should feel a lot better to play. I've also revised a good bit of the object placements in erto and warship after player feedback to make them less annoying but the missions are still largely the same. Your verry right that a lot of the choices in our mod is verry fangame brained. The entire mods development was litirally whatever we thought would be cool while sitting in a discord call together. It was a constant struggle to follow a unified vision. Piantisimo being as busted as he is was kinda our response to people who find sunshine hard. Just give them a high risk high reward easy mode of sorts. Often times op stuff in games can be super fun as long as it's not meta centralizing and I think we don't run the risk of that since he is balanced out by being limited in his water spreading abilities. The castle and all of its content being locked behind 240 is something we did verry intentionally as having nothing but a postcard was something people always complained about the original. The post game is basically a museum of both sunshine and eclipse development history. If your gonna explore our little grave yard you need to pay your respects with 240 shines first. A sort of you respect us the devs and we respect you sorta deal. Another factor that complicated development is the fact that sunshine had like 0 tools actueally developed at the time asides an level editor from 2013 so our team had to develop all the modding tools alongside the mod itself. I hope that the framework we have developed and the path that we have charted makes the journey easier for the next guy. It's verry surreal to finally see the project come to fruition and have people play it, after just months earlier joking about how we're just another fan project that will never be finished. I'm super proud of our team and what we've managed to accomplish even if rough arround the edges❤.
I've beaten Bowser and I'm on my way to 100% and I can genuinely say this is my favorite way to play sunshine. I am Inlove with this game I haven't had this much fun playing a game in a very long time
Hey no problem! Your comment is very insightful! I kinda wrote the script before I got to the 240 shrines, so I believed more of the postgame content was finished because the very finished custom final boss was sorta lobbed together, it works a lot better with that context! Still can't get over some of the "unfinished" castle levels being more fun than some of the actual game levels, but that's mostly a nitpick As I say, I found the mod to be incredibly amazing and all of it's flaws align very well with mario sunshine's, so even the things that I didn't like have a silver lining that is actually quite awesome! You guys did an incredible job, and I hope future patches can remedy some of the negatives I mention, the simple fact that I can hold you to a half standard of Nintendo's is proof enough that I feel the team's member's have a lot of potential, and I hope the people who continue developing game-related projects see success in the field! Thank 4 watch :3
Got a few things you can tweak. Not tryna be a debbie downer, but the rockets are unusable on the mine mission and the camera gets super messed up when going in small places on the new map. The new maps are AWESOME however. Very good feel. Feels like the original game. Would love to see those tweaks somehow though! The mine mission was awful because of the rocket exploding before I could even walk away, but I did finish it.
Also I noticed the new double jump is the exact same height as the original backflip. I quit double jump all together and only do the backflip like I did in the original game. I get not making it higher than the backflip but seems a little arbitrary. Not really a complaint just noting it for you just in case it wasn't just a cosmetic choice.
The fact you're reviewing Eclipse like people review video games is proof positive enough that the devs have potential. This video may come off as harsh, but that you're holding them to almost the same standard as Nintendo speaks volumes of the intent behind this video and just how truky positive and impactful Eclipse is to not only future Sunshine hacks, but Mario Rom hacking in general. That this mod went so far makes me feel like this is just the prelude to something even better in the future. Eclipse walks so that something can run. Amazing video, man! You've earned yourself a new subscriber.
Hooray! pretty much what I meant to say. I'm actually super curious as to what some people in the team will do in the future because this is spectacular at points. Sunshine is practically the perfect game for it too since it's already jank, making the devs decitions feel less separated with the original's design. If you where to ask me, I'd place this second on the most impressive mario hack, because whatever kaze is doing with mario 64 is just ridiculous, that man doesn't just have potential, I'm convinced he is a genius.
@jackstack2136 If you want a serious answer, its because modding this game is how they found out they had this potential in the first place, similar to how Artists draw fanart of Nintendo characters to practice their skills. Would that not also be intruding on Nintendo's IP if an artist drew super mario in the exact same style as his concept art, just in a unique pose or scenario? You can be talented and have potential while creating derivative fan works. That's how most talented people discover they have potential. As for "intruding" on the IP, I sincerely doubt Nintendo is losing money or the integrity of its IP because a team of talented fans who are more than likely going to do original game work after this modded a game that's over a decade old. I see no good reason to feel any way other than positive about this unless you just want to spread misery around for whatever reason or want to defend Nintendo from some perceived slight against them by the evil Eclipse team? Modern gaming sucks these days, so older games are often a great Bastion of fun and creativity. Why stifle it by calling it "intruding", as though they're committing some grievance to the poor, helpless victim indie company that is Nintendo. Let's be real for a second here. Nobody's getting hurt because this mod was created (except me when I suck at the new levels because i have a skill issue). There's your serious answer. Happy? I sincerely doubt it.
Gotta love how I go to play a Mario rom hack, just having a good time, getting the trinkets and stuff, only to then immediately get hit in the gut by level design that feels straight out of a kaizo level. All because Mario fans have played the OG games so many times they want to push themselves into a higher difficulty spike, usually in a way that requires unreasonable knowledge and mastery of the game's physics in arbitrary ways, and then think it's fine to push it towards everyone else with no consent :P
@@Mike14264 no consent ??! This comment is assuming you complain about eclipse** It’s a fan game, you chose to play it, and nothing is close to kaizo level difficulty I’m not a sunshine speedrunner, I only beat it 2 or three times as a kid (never got 120 shines) and I never failed a secret level more than ten times, the same amount I was struggling with as a kid, no hard tech required. To me it feels 100% genuine to the original « difficulty » and you can cruise through the game easily
The compliments followed by a rush of insults is so damn accurate to how I talk about regular Sunshine. It's like my favorite Mario of all despite it being arguably the worst lol
@@Velovetre It may be the worst, but I still like it a lot! It's incredible how much detail it has, to the point where the lack of those stupid details like coins coming out of the wanted posters not being in the mod made me feel off!
@@cyanryann64 this is why SUBWAY CIRCUIT is my most viewed channel of the year probably; their blue coin Eclipse videos are just that helpful and necessary, and I’ve had to consult their videos multiple times even after thinking I leaned where all the tricky coins are.
I feel like the mod is meant to be a love letter to Sunshine, so I think that keeping all the bugs and defects for the original game makes it even more faithful
@@Escararpa just as a general rule, I would put being faithful lower on the totem pole compared to being a better experience with less bugs and defects. (I haven't played eclipse, I'm just learning about it now, but I'm just saying, generally speaking)
and it's also probably one of the most critical videos I've done in a while too! I think... Fact remains, they made sunshine better, but didn't quite fix it.
Eclipse is the Starroad of Sunshine, its so, so, SO good and official feeling and looking that it is just perfect, by far the best Mario hack/mod ever made, and one of the best hacks to ever be made to anything
I hope this is the start of some crazy sunshine hacks like what we see with 64 now. It's not as likely because N64 had a lot of growth due to general interest in romhacks throughout the years, but I'm hoping this IS like star road and gets eventually opaqued by the stuff that releases 5 years from now.
@@SmashedTomatoes fr, the thing that while way more difficult to emulate, n64 is super easy to mod and REALY well understood, kaze emanuar is a prime example of that, buddy know every single line of text in the code of that game. Plus the comunity is so old, we have custom models since 05 with a luigi model and texture, we have toad tools and its sucesives for more then a decade now and Star Road witch is as I said not as much as eclipse but still almost nintendo level of quality and super iconic for also more then a decade. Sunshine is sadly just less popular of a game, both as a game and as a engine
"Sunshine's quality standard could be easily achieved by fans" This isn't even remotely true when it comes to the art quality. Sunshine is simply the most impressive composition and color work ever seen in a Mario game, and it's why all the modded stages look like N64 western third party dev stages in comparison.
That's the art direction, not the quality standard. Personally, I don't think sunshine has better colors than some levels in odyssey, but I get what you mean, Noki bay will always be one of my visually favorite mario levels. Personally, I think red lily city and lacrima hotel's interior look really good, they certainly get close to real nintendo quality, it's just the lack of objects and abundance of flat textures that makes them short.
I'd love to see your mapping skill if you think you can do better bro. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Come over to where the grass is greener on gamebanana and stop giving them 70$ for lazy first party mods of new super mario bros and botw. Nintendo is a shell of their former self and is worse than EA the switch ruined them.
@@SmashedTomatoes The composition work in Sunshine obliterates odyssey tbh. You can turn your camera pretty much any which way anywhere and it feels like you're looking at an illustration. In odyssey, it's common for the main way of looking at an area to not be as nicely composed as some random obscure angle you found in sunshine. I agree limitations in hardware can sometimes strangle the lighting expression in sunshine a bit, where odyssey will shine, no pun intended. And yeah sections of this mod did impress me art-wise.
If someone could make a nice mod like this and get rid of all the blue coins, I'd be all over it lol... I just want a 3d mario game where stars are the point, and that's it.
Then go play SM64 Hacks instead. Mario Sunshine won´t work without the Blue Coins since they are part of the game & SM64 hacking might be easier to do + there are a lot of good ones.
@@Acceos lol I'm good, I dont really mess with hacks/mods... I was just saying in an ideal world, SMS wouldn't have blue coins. I think one day someone could figure out a way to remove them, albeit with a lot of work
I like the blue coins in sunshine when they work, like, there's so many coins that are just at random places, but I like the ones that are placed somewhere smart or with a platforming challenge. If anything, I'd like a "sunshine but the stupid blue coins are now in not stupid places" mod.
@@SmashedTomatoes hell, if the coins were not specific to arbitrary chapters, and were instead common to all variations of the level as a whole, I'd already be more than happy.
Vanilla sunshine will always be pretty good, tbf, it's just the most rushed and inconsistent, but I wouldn't call it bad, it just has moments of "ugh".
vanilla is short and incomplete you can get to volcano is a couple of days on your first playthru... we only got two sages temples in windwaker too neither sunshine or windwaker got their full time to develop and its up to the fans to pick up the pieces
An alternative interpretation of Warship island: 1. Combine missions 1 and 2. Kind of redundant. 2. In story: --The entire place is a historical monument (explains the weird ships) --The NPCs saw Bowser going to the mountain, and the cannonballs/mines were dropped on the way there --The NPCs topside are fanatical historical reenacters who refuse to break character (explains the incompetency) --The NPCs in the base (the sub is moved to not be visible from shore) are the real navy, who do nothing because the situation is stable/ they think the reenacters are weird. --One of the final missions can be a Monty mole boss fight using rockets provided by the reenacters, but which gets destroyed in the final phase. Then the Navy can step in revealing themselves creating a platform you can stand on to throw back the bombs. Afterwards in mission 8 you can see the NPCs intermingling, now on good terms with each other.
@@logan3920 that could be great, but the level would still have level design issues, people forget level design is as important as aesthetics! What I would change is the layout of the level, devide the level into a top portion with the ships and a bottom portion with the Navy's base, where the top portion has missions dedicated to the rocket nozzle and the bottom one has missions for the turbo nozzle. It would still need a LOT of objective changes, because they are mostly pretty boring...
@@SmashedTomatoes Here are some mission objectives changes I came up with potentially: MISSION 1 --Spawn @ NPC with historical artifacts --Missions is figuring out/taking each to designated area --(Cannonball to cannon, food barrel to storage, anchor to chain) --One obstacle near decommissioned bullet bill --On completionz NPC comments on mine, takes off hands, bootout MISSION 2 (SEA SPOTTER'S SECRET) --Possible during other missions besides boss --NPC hint - you're not understanding character, best to sometimes feel water in your hair, look high above the horizon to the rising sun --Accessed by standing on crow's nest and looking at sun on horizon --Water/seafaring/pirates themed MISSION 3 --NPC ("double agent") mentions goop coming out near alcove opening (turns out to be leaking mines), give turbo to investigate --Underwater sub-area with the turbo nozzle, avoid obstacles and reach end --Loads into secret marine base, double agent revealed MISSION 4 --Spawn at secret base, go through obstacle course and clear out mines using"special helmet" in time limit MISSION 5 -Boss fight (Monty Mole has taken over cannons near middle of map) -Use rocket to attack from afar, pick up each one using the turbo (bullet speed is significantly sped up) --3rd stage - bullet bill from mission 1 explodes off screen, "destroying" rocket supply of last site --Sub emerges, showing platform to get access to mole with rocket nozzle too. Defeat using bombs. MISSION 6 --Red coin mission MISSION 7 --Shadow Mario MISSION 8 (EPILOGUE) --Pass obstacle course around map using ship parade mix of historic/naval vessels (maybe collect something?)

Great review! For some reason the game footage keeps switching from too dark and straining my eyes, and a normal light level. Made it hard to take in the details of the game, as well as the rapid cuts. Overall enjoyable review
I've seen some people around get away with swapping clips every 2 seconds, and it's REALLY obnoxious. I try to find a balance between entertaining and style. As for the footage, the reason is that the Mod has global light level, which means the game lights up as you collect shrines, I didn't apply any effects unless I brightened up that darkness, because even I felt it ridiculous.

Just the new levels don’t have any music. Then sometimes, very rarely they will start playing for a bit then go silent again…
I know. I'm not anywhere near established enough to take luxuries on that regard, if I don't do the most I can to make sure my videos reach people, then there's a high possibility that I can't even keep going.
2 things few ofyour isuues re simply opertor error or you not grsping the concept, number 2 the slide works if you arent going balls to the wall the whole time like i didnt even die once on it.
Did you see the footage? There's parts of it that clearly show why it doesn't work even if you aren't going balls, and fixing it is probably very easy since it's just smoothing out those little issues. I totally think a future patch will give it a tiny makeover, if only to make it feel less wonky.
@@SmashedTomatoes the slide has collision specifically to keep you on the track and areas that speed you up specifically to avoid what was in your video you CAN kill your moment by ground pounding then not touching the analog stick but why would anyone do that unless they were specifically doing what you were doing

This mod makes the world brighter as you collect shines, and it's global instead of just in delfino, that's why you slowly see the footage become normal. @danielk2715 you can mod it and use Swiss. The custom music works too BUT the framerate is cut in half in tons of places. A lot of this hack is "pick your poison" in regards to how you play it I noticed. Swiss - Massive Framerate drops Nintendont - No custom music Dolphin - Either bad heatwave effect or pixilated goop depending on your EFB scaling settings. I'd just go Dolphin + the Gamecube Controller adapter if your PC can handle it.
Well, if the whole video was complementing, I wouldn't really be saying anything, it doesn't do anything particularly special to be good, so the video would end up being kinda boring if I spent a lot of time explaining what I liked. I trust the viewer to recognize the negatives I mention and the positives I don't mention can coexist.
So why are you putting a comment in a video about a mod that just came out for the game? You may be interested in giving it another chance, it's not anywhere near the best mario, the man barely does what I tell him to at times, but I feel it's one of those games that has really specific movement options that are quite fun if you figure them out.
Now if I could just find someone who can tell me in normal people, mod-inexperienced language and terminology how to download and play this game 😂. I’ve used homebrew on the Wii in the past for like Ocarina of Time randomizers and was able to figure it out. I’m not a PC gamer so I don’t have all the tools and equipment accessible to do it that way. Every Reddit post I read trying to explain is like an entirely different language to me. Like I need someone to hold my hand and explain to me slowly what .xdelta means and how to get it on my Wii 😂 I’m being serious.
Pay more attention! The very file you downloaded has a file named "DROP THE SUNSHINE ISO HERE", you are meant to find a sunshine rom and drop it into the file in a folder will the xdelta and other files in the download, this will generate a new ISO that you can use in hombrew through swiss or nintendon't, tho mind the latter doesn't load custom music.
@@SmashedTomatoes I understand the directions where you download the file. That part is straightforward. It’s that no one bothers to explain the other parts like what is Swiss and how do I get it on the Wii. How do I even get this setup as a beginner? I feel like in these explanations there’s a lot of assumptions about what people should know or have, but the average gamer who 99% of the time just purchases original games and plays them, like myself, has no clue what they’re talking about. It ends up with me opening like 10+ tabs to look up the various terms and still having no clue what’s happening. There is like no straightforward explanation. From what I can tell Swiss is an entirely separate thing you download separate from homebrew so I don’t get how you can play SME on homebrew through swiss. I do pay attention, it just doesn’t make sense to a beginner. When I did the Zelda randomizers there was literally steps for how to do everything from point A to B.
@@PrisonHoney96 Swiss should be a homebrew program, kinda like installing a program on PC, you just put it somewhere homebrew can read it, tho the program itself probably also has a specific folder to put the roms into. That said, it sounds like you wanna dump your game, and that's actually more complicated, I think randomizers for zelda don't need that because the games have been decompiled? Not sure.
isn't this game free? Why are you trashing a work of love from Sunshine fans? i'd understand if it weren't free and you thought it was a waste of your hard earned money, but something free only deserves constructive criticism, at most, and this isn't that. I'm just happy I got to witness more levels of my favorite childhood game, and hopefully they can do more sunshine stuff in the future! although if every nerd is talking like this about their work I wouldn't be surprised if they'd never want to
Beyond me why you think this is trashing and not constructive, I end up trashing on sunshine more than on the hack, and I even argue throughout that all the jank is not only expected of a fan project, but beneficial to it's appearance. Did you not pay attention?
Its awesome how many times you try to compare a fan made mod to a "Nintendo quality" product. Because, if you compare the original Sunshine to Eclipse - you would clearly see that the Eclipse team put more love and time into the game then Nintendo. Look back at SM64, countless levels; all super unique, vibrant, and full of design. Thats the same feeling I got with Eclipse. The irony of it all was how poorly made your review was and awful editing. But I guess thats RUclips, low level losers trying to make a name for themselves by bashing the work of others.
LMAO you just hate sunshine, even Noki bay which was rushed is a great level that was clearly loved. Also, my review wasn't at all negative? I kinda showered the mod with praise and only complained about 3 things before stating that those 3 things are exactly what one would expect out of dedicated fans, all of whom have a future in the game's industry? Go watch your well edited video or whatever, they're just spamming after effects template transitions with woosh sound effects, kinda ironic for you to talk to me about the quality and love/time someone put into a project only for you to miss the love/time I put into this video, you downright missed the entire point.
@@SmashedTomatoes actions speak louder than words bud. Also trying to compare my 8 year videos to your hot garbage is hilarious.
Still can't get over some of the "unfinished" castle levels being more fun than some of the actual game levels, but that's mostly a nitpick
As I say, I found the mod to be incredibly amazing and all of it's flaws align very well with mario sunshine's, so even the things that I didn't like have a silver lining that is actually quite awesome!
@@epicwade6346 Thank you for the effort anyway! It's a brilliant addition to a brilliant game! 💙
If the devs have potential, why not just make their own game with their own twist on these mechanics? Why intrude on a pre-existing Nintendo IP?
@@jackstack2136 I found one of Nintendo's lawyers, guys! Scatter!
@@zow8238 It's sad that I ask a simple question and this is your response instead of a simple answer
Pretty much this! Eh, I like it sometimes! AND this hack does have a tutorial that walks you through the tech, so it's pretty nice!

"Sunshine's quality standard could be easily achieved by fans"
This isn't even remotely true when it comes to the art quality.

An alternative interpretation of Warship island:
1. Combine missions 1 and 2. Kind of redundant.
2. In story:
--The entire place is a historical monument (explains the weird ships)
--The NPCs saw Bowser going to the mountain, and the cannonballs/mines were dropped on the way there
--The NPCs topside are fanatical historical reenacters who refuse to break character (explains the incompetency)
--The NPCs in the base (the sub is moved to not be visible from shore) are the real navy, who do nothing because the situation is stable/ they think the reenacters are weird.
@@SmashedTomatoes Here are some mission objectives changes I came up with potentially:
MISSION 1
--Spawn @ NPC with historical artifacts
--Missions is figuring out/taking each to designated area
--(Cannonball to cannon, food barrel to storage, anchor to chain)
--One obstacle near decommissioned bullet bill
--On completionz NPC comments on mine, takes off hands, bootout
MISSION 2 (SEA SPOTTER'S SECRET)
--Possible during other missions besides boss
--NPC hint - you're not understanding character, best to sometimes feel water in your hair, look high above the horizon to the rising sun
--Accessed by standing on crow's nest and looking at sun on horizon
--Water/seafaring/pirates themed
MISSION 3
--NPC ("double agent") mentions goop coming out near alcove opening (turns out to be leaking mines), give turbo to investigate
--Underwater sub-area with the turbo nozzle, avoid obstacles and reach end
--Loads into secret marine base, double agent revealed
MISSION 4
--Spawn at secret base, go through obstacle course and clear out mines using"special helmet" in time limit
MISSION 5
-Boss fight (Monty Mole has taken over cannons near middle of map)
-Use rocket to attack from afar, pick up each one using the turbo (bullet speed is significantly sped up)
--3rd stage - bullet bill from mission 1 explodes off screen, "destroying" rocket supply of last site
--Sub emerges, showing platform to get access to mole with rocket nozzle too. Defeat using bombs.
MISSION 6
--Red coin mission
MISSION 7
--Shadow Mario
MISSION 8 (EPILOGUE)
--Pass obstacle course around map using ship parade mix of historic/naval vessels (maybe collect something?)

Not sure.
hii
isn't this game free?
Earrape at 4:02 lol
Are you watching at full volume? Mario just disfigured his face and you're concerned over a slightly loud sound, smh.
@@SmashedTomatoes it scawed me i had ear pods in :(
Its awesome how many times you try to compare a fan made mod to a "Nintendo quality" product.
@@SmashedTomatoes your review still sucked. just delete your channel buddy.
@@SmashedTomatoes actions speak louder than words bud. Also trying to compare my 8 year videos to your hot garbage is hilarious. If the age of the videos werent a clue that I dont dabble in video making anymore, than I really dont know what is. But trying to convey logic with someone who cant even appreciate the Eclipse mod is pointless. Hopefully one day your content will actually have some quality behind it.
Bro is late 💀
I can’t watch 20 minutes of this annoying dude, anyone got a TLDW?
Skill issue.
The review is nice but the way this guy talks is just unbearable
Skill issue, it's an accent and there's not much I can do about it, sorry!
In his defense, I am sure he is speaking as best he can. Learning a second language can be a challenging endeavor and expecting someone not to have an accent when their first language is not English is kind of unrealistic/unreasonable in my opinion.
@@SmashedTomatoes I understand , so i still gave it a like
@@adamantoutcast0 you're right

Bro why are you pronouncing "character" like that? You've heard how everyone pronounces it yet you choose to do it wrong ☠️

Hey there's big people on RUclips who pronounce stuff worse!!
