  • The Hawker Hurricane is well known for its contribution during the Battle of Britain - but can the same be said about this kit in the scale modelling hobby?
    Join me on the workbench today as I show you how I built the Hobby 2000 Hawker Hurricane Mk1.a Late in 1/72 scale and discover the many challenges that this kit decided to put up! Let me know what you think of my build of this plastic model kit in the comments!
    In this video I do a bit of 3D printing to solve a problem and try out some paints from the SMS (The Scale Modellers Supply) acrylic lacquer range which were kindly donated for review by the Frome Model Centre. Take a look at the ranges here:

    Stunning build given the issues you've had with the kit. I am currently building a Revell Hurricane Mk IIC in 1/72 scale and it's been a challenge to say the least. This has been down to the poor quality of the moulding which I suspect is down to it being an old kit. After seeing your video it has helped me to understand the approach to painting the model in the correct steps so I feel less daunted by the prospect. If my Hurricane looks as good as yours, I'll be very happy indeed. Thank you Matt for a great video.

    My goodness, this brought back some memories. Although it's 45 years since I last touched a kit, Hurricanes were my obsession back then. I built dozens covering different variants and in scales up to 1:24. No 3D printing then, lots of swapping parts from other kits, judicious carving of scraps and (sometimes) generous use of plastic putty. Never had those reels of wire, just used the old standby of stretched sprue for the aerial. I like the clear parts coming protected in a separate bag--I spent too many hours trying to polish out scratches with toothpaste!
    All paint was applied by brush--my money never quite ran to an airbrush and Santa never got the message either. Luckily, I was able to pick up some tips on brushwork and paint effects from my father, a Master Painter & Decorator of the old school who was adept at graining and marbling, that could be usefully transferred to model work--even if he could never appreciate why I would want to mar the perfect showroom finish with aging and weathering!
    I have to say I was rather shocked at the prices of kits; they are a bit outside the 'pocket money' bracket nowadays! I remember having to think carefully about ordering a 3rd party decal sheet for a shilling!

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  Год назад

      The price of this kit isn't a true representative of all ranges, it is a bit of an expensive outlier. Fortunately many other products are much cheaper (the airfix hurricane 1 retailed for £6.99 recently which is much more affordable)

  • @glencwilson

    Good result despite the little issues. 1/72 is probably a bit small to go freehand but may need to reduce the airbrush pressure and get in a lot closer for the edges of the areas and then fill in. For the red on the nose, once the decal has set and been varnished just go over the decal with the red paint. Doesn't have to be right to the edge but that will help. Happy New Year to you!

    8:50 the sausages are a great way to get a line that is not too hard. I use this myself but rather than use masking fluid I use an ordinary tissue paper. It's double ply and easily parts to make single ply which is then applied to the sausages. Great job on the Hurricane, easily my favourite aircraft of all time.

    Hi this is my first comment on your channel. That was a really good build you did there. I'm in total agreement with you about hand painting the interior of the aircraft as after you put the canopy on you will not see the interior of the aircraft at 1/72 scale. And it was good to see that you use the blue tack method for the camouflage as this is my preferred method for when I use my air brush to. Can I make a suggestion about you gluing your canopy to the aircraft! I always use PVA glue to attach the canopy. I can imagine this sounds daft but if you try it you can wait until the glue goes off . It will dry crystal clear then with a damp brush remove the exses. Glue . You will have no fogging on any of your clear parts. One other thing I can point out is I have found that it is always best to mask the rotor tips if you want to add a colour as this makes the rota look absolutely brilliant and highlights the whole model. It's all about the tiny details. Keep up the good work and I hope you didn't mind me calling you out on a few details.

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  Год назад

    I always enjoy watching your builds, Matt, but why do you want a soft-edge comouflage on a RAF fighter ? The RAF used linoleum masks they put on the planes when spraying the patterns, so it was hard edged in real.

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  Год назад +1

      Yeah, I am aware of the stencil mats they use having done some research recently - I pretty much just wanted to practice using the airbrush really. Fortunately I ended up not having a soft edge in the end lol

  • @jabonorte
    @jabonorte Год назад

    Can never get blutack to conform enough for 1/72 camp. Specialist masking putty sinks in after a while so you don’t get much bleed through, but you have to be careful peeling off of small parts. Really like the Hobby 2000 range because you get nice, older kits and good decals. The 1/72 Hurricane isn’t the best value as it looks expensive against the Arma Hobbies kit, but the 1/48 one is a really good buy

      I've found using an airbrush or a wet blending method to give reasonably good results - probably worth watching one of my videos on a German aircraft rather than a RAF one if you want to see those methods

    Matt, you have been paid to make the video!! You have been paid by a method the tax man calls ‘benefit in kind’ ie not cash but something that benefits you and the paints took part in a video that of course benefits you! If this wasn’t payment then for example politicians could take say a new kitchen, car or holiday and there wouldn’t be an issue. Or you gave your cleaner a bottle wine instead of cash!
    Think about it Matt it’s payment just not what you are used to. Of course you could ring HMRC and ask them, may get you an audit but at least you would know! Anything you are sent (to keep or not) that you use in a video for your channel is pay Matt, I wouldn’t lie to you.
    By the way the piece you did on the model shop is sponsorship or payment ‘in turn’ for the paints!

      Thanks for your concern Bob, please be assured that i do investigate these things for my self assessment each year. Irregardless of the tax aspect, as the products are effectively gifts and no contracts are signed I am therefore able to review the products as I see fit, and I could even not review them if I chose to which is why I declare as such at the beginning of the video

      @@ModelMinutes I do not doubt your reviews are honest ‘Matt’ sorry if I left you thinking otherwise, it was just RUclips picking something up as I hear they can be very hard?!
