Compared them side by side at the store, the garmin despite being more "advanced" was harder to program, it felt flimsy and fragile, yes it has a ton more "trekking" stuff, I bought a GShock to ride my adventure bike or get deep in the mountains on my jeep. Casio has never ever let me down in my entire life...the G is a Tank, and its bulky, feels bullet proof, and I know it will outlast any garmin you put against it. And even when they both last up to 16 hours on continuous gps use + hrm, the G Battery can last up to 1 entire year against 50 days on the garmin. My last watch, a Samsun Gearsport was good, but its a true pita to charge it up daily, is not a mobile phone, why should i charge something like that so continuosly? Im in love with the size, the bulletproof feeling and the functions on my G shock, the garmin for me just felt...girly and easy to break
Having used the same solar Casio pathfinder from 2007 with no problems this was an easy buy. 13 years and running strong but I dropped it and the open spring dislodged so time for a g shock. Casio products last forever.
Damn that's big. Love g-shock and love fitness watches, but I think the Garmin Fenix is the best bet as far as tough and rugged goes, plus every feature you could ever need.

Excellent review brother. I'm a big G-Shock fan and have checked many reviews of this model and this is by far the most practical and Informative. Cheers!

Excellent review indeed! The indoor cycling aspect really does throw up the problem of the calculation of calories. Casio needs to address this problem urgently. The HR function works just fine for me and compares most favourably with the Heart Strap readings on my Indoor Bike.
Excellent review, thank you! I fully agree this is Casio's first attempt also with using GPS after huge Rangeman, so I think even more amazing things are coming for Casio, but time is running as not just watchmakers say and competition is definitely not asleep so Casio might loose some of the momentum.

Man... this is the G-shock that should have came out before the Garmins had a chance in this market my Garmin VVA4 sees drops in HR during strength training. I would need to take it off and wipe the sweat off both wrist and watch
Excellent review! I just got my GBD-H1000 the other day and I was having the darndest time figuring out how to start it for a simple bike ride! Thanks for clearing it up!

I'll wait for the new comparison. I can imagine the work you do on the review and wanted to take some of my time to say I appreciate it. Thank you!
So I have been using the watch for a few days so far and I've noticed that when you go into training mode if you are not going to move from a location, it will only count calories based on the accelerometer. When I'm doing strength training the calories barely go up, when I run on a treadmill or do cardio or fast exercises that require arm movement, they start going up at a decent rate. I don't know how accurately it is, but at least it's something. Hopefully they start improving the software and implementing new stuff
This is the most interesting Casio G-Shock watch ever made. Every function I need and want in one watch. Perfect, kind of. If I wasn't so deep into the Garmin Connect universe (been using the Forerunner 235 WHR since 2016) I'd get this G-Shock immediately. Solid review Des. I'm a G-Shock fan - had a Rangeman for few years and it's still my go to for any outdoor/ rugged wear. Also own a Mud-Master but it's just too big for day to day wear. Casio pioneered the tough/survival watch so excited to see where they will take Sports watches. Would be good to see a colour display on future models. There seem to be some shortcomings but for durability it's going to be hard to surpass Casio. And the battery life is 👍🏽
Thats a great review. Thanks Des. I have been really keen on replacing my Stratos with the Stratos 3 and it would be great to have an in depth review on that as well. I can't really find good in depth reviews on that
I watch your channel and the way you make this watch sound it seem like a good deal. It arrived today and I can't believe how bad the GBD-H1000 build quality is I was expecting the same build quality as my gwg 1000 mudmaster am I disappointed. The watch feel so light wait it like you have not even got a watch on at all. I was just looking for a heavy more tough quality watch like I am use to from casio I feel this will be my last casio. The review was fantastic any way really enjoy your channel.
Thank you for your awesome content! Is there going to be a follow up video any time soon? It would be nice to see, whether the watch software has been updated or not as there's not much information on the internet available.
I bought the watch and among other flaws which I already reported to the customer support, I find some problems: 1) the training plan allows only to select from 5k,10,half and full marathon. What if I'd like to train over the 3.000 meters lenght? Or the 1.50 mts? The length should be arbitrary. 2) What is the purpose of having a full time cardio monitor without the possibility to download the data or see the cardio graph on a big screen? The 24hrs monitor graph on the tiny screen of the watch is basically useless. Same as for downloadable GPS data, no trace of it. 3) GPS accuracy is questionable, over a trip on the mountain it recorded only half of my trip and the length was way off. 4) cardio monitor sometimes gets crazy, jumping to very high values (150s bpm) while you are in the 60s. It must be stopped and restarted from the application in order to restore its functionality. 5) the training monitor should have other sports settings, such as fitness 6) Either I use the app from my telephone or on my tablet. I cannot use it on both as I get disconnected from the other device. What is the sense in that given that I log in with my personal credentials? Let us use the app from whichever device we want 7) while I understand the limitations of having an effective vibrating system in such a small device, I definitely do not understand the really poor alarm sound. It wouldn't wake up anybody or even alert anyone during a run or training. Bummer, I hope Casio will fix this at the speed of the light.
"GPS accuracy is questionable, over a trip on the mountain it recorded only half of my trip and the length was way off." Did you have it set to straight line distance or 3D distance ?
got me really curious for a replacement for my already dated Fenix 3 when this thing showed up. nice 1st drop from Casio, but looks like a lot of ground to catch vs Garmin. happy to have moved on to Garmin Instinct. UI much improved, and I suddenly appreciate a correctly sized watch on my wrist
The solor is huge on this type if watch if Garmin would do this at this price point would be impossible to beat I do think that for this price you should get the garmin instinct instead
Between this product and their new Rangeman, Casio is really going all out when it comes to it's new models. The amount of functions they are able to put into a single watch is awesome when compared to other watches that have to be linked to a phone to have access to all functions. Now if they can just make a light weight G-Shock square with carbon fiber and their GMW-B5000 module, which you find in the full metal square, then I wouldn't need another watch ever again.
I will also tell you something interesting! How do you know based on the comparison which one measures exactly? when we don't know which device and how it was put together, and if that sensor is reliable? or is it well connected to the satellite? I'm Hungarian, they say that Garmin is inaccurate. well, unfortunately there is so much of the device that we get lost in it. Otherwise, Japanese cars and like casio are quality and accurate!
This is a great review, I would also add that you have to also compare the battery life which boast much more stellar times than other smartwatches especially being solar powered.
I just purchased this gshock yesterday. Before purchasing, I was comparing GBD H1000 and Germin Instinct Solar. In my opinion, garmin has better function, but I only run, therefore I went for Gshock.
I really like how in-depth you went into the features of this device!! thank you so much, I just got it and will be doing a Quick Look video in a couple of days, is it ok if I refer to your video for more in-depth information pertaining activity?
I'm both a G-Shock fan and a Garmin fan, and I have been waiting for Casio to do a HRM smart watch! After watching your review, I do have doubts about jumping into the GBD. Would you recommend to stick to a Garmin for now and wait for a v2.0 GBD? I currently have a Fenix 3HR and I use it predominantly for mountain biking.
Same.. I have the Fenix 6 Titanium. I was going to order this, as I love Casio. But it is a little bit strange, that it doesn't use HR for energy consumption. That means I wouldnt use it for training, just as a normal watch/activity tracker.
Great review! Thanks very much... I think this watch will be perfect for me. I am not as active as you are. Walking ( and walk around golf courses to watch my son in tournaments, lol ), hiking, indoor running are my main activities. I just want to know my HR the rest of the functions are bonus to me. I had a Rangeman... and I was wishing for a Casio thats got HR function. And this is going to be great for me. Hows the step counter? can you do a quick review on that? Thanks again for all the various comps. Very informative and useful. Pre-order and cant wait.
Hi can you revist Casio G-Shock Move GBD-H1000 GPS/HR Watch // In-Depth Review in 2021 and see if there has been any improvments since youe last review. thanks .
Super interesting video, Des. I don't think there is any way I can get past the form factor. 100+ grams and 20mm thick is a bit too much for me. I am surprised that the OHR did fairly well in your tests. I'm not sure what exactly they were thinking by releasing a watch with only 1 activity profile. The Grit-X is probably in the same price range and it has probably 200 profiles. Still, Casio has a lot of resources. Maybe they will even come up with a more wearable non-G-Shock watch line with OHR too.
I'm sure they will open up new profiles. They'd put themselves out of the market if they stick to running and miss out on things like cycling or skiing. That isn't projecting wishes, that's a prediction from what every other device does. 😏
I can’t imagine they would just stick with the one running profile. It would limit the appeal of this watch to a much broader audience. To note, I did not get a “No” when I asked them about more profiles in the future but they also did not say if there was anything planned.
Great review! Exactly what I was looking for from this watch. I love the exterior but guess I'd have to go with Garmin Venu instead, for indoor activities, thanks!
Great video, thanks for sharing. Does this watch tell you lat/long or MGRS? Probably not gonna see that until they add a trail feature which you alluded to but just wondering.
Good to see Casio jumping into this market. What is the price for this watch?? Hopefully Casio will put out a more competitive offering when my Garmin Instinct dies one day.
The gbd-100 is almost as big alot cheaper and does the same basic features just doesn't have the heart rate functions and barometer and GPS software. So if you really don't need those features just get the gbd-100 and save yourself some money. The gbd-h100 cost two and a half times more for not that big a difference.
great review Des! Really enjoyed that. I have a question which you may or may not know the answer to; you mention Casio need to perhaps work on the software, do you think this is something they could/would work on and pass on to this watch or do you think they would work on it for a future watch?
They wouldn’t confirm or deny that there would be updates to the watch software, however I do know that the web platform isn’t quite ready yet. That said, there is definitely an opportunity there for them to build on to what is already there.
Thanks for this detailed review. I wanted your opinion on a specific use case that may be common in some of your other viewers: Considering the watch only records running, how do you think-: 1) the watch perform while only walking or a mix of walking and running? Do you think the watch will auto stop the workout when I transition into walking and restart only when I get back to running? 2) I usually go for a walk and a run during the day. Do you think the training metrics such as VO2 max, recovery advisor, etc. will be thrown off during the walk portion? 3) Lastly, how did the training metrics get impacted during your weight training activity? Can I switch on the heart rate only while weight training? And if I am only recording the heart rate without opening the Run app, is there a way to download that data anywhere? For example if I leave it on for the entire day and sleeping, does it give me an option to analyse it? Thanks
Any activity other than running outside will throw off the training metrics, although it can still collect the activity data. Something that could have been resolved via firmware but I didn't see any updates. Thanks.
@@DesFit hey, just wanted to let you know that as per Casio g shock FAQ page, a recent update has disabled VO2 max calculations when doing indoor activities such as cycling trainer rides but it will still calculate on indoor treadmill runs. However, it seems that VO2 max is updated on outdoor cycling rides so one cannot use it for that purpose it seems.
This is such an amazing review I really enjoyed the information on this watch. Looked through a few and yours is by far the best !!! Thank you- subbed Ps: Has there been any news about an update to the software that you are aware of? The 5bpm accuracy irregularities got me doubting myself whether or not to buy
Great review! I was looking for an Apple Watch for monitoring daily fitness activity and I found this G-shock today, so I really appreciate it! I will probably stay with the Apple Watch for the moment..
@Swaggy Toast - The Apple Watch series 4 and 5 have some of the best wrist based heart rate sensors on any wearables. They have lots of sports profiles as well as a really good accelerometer and algorithms that track activities very well. The GPS could be more detailed and the battery life definitely could be better, for sure, but “sorely lacking” isn’t the case.
@@DesFit Let me rephrase Apple watch fitness features are subpar when compared to garmin here's why: 1. while having an arguably better HR sensor the software to view it doesn't really tell you anything. Not only is the heart rate map harder to read it doesn't give you useful CIQ information or things like how much time you spent in each zone 2. Battery life doesn't allow for good sleep tracking unless you remember to charge it before you sleep and when you wake up 3.The different sports profiles don't do much besides change the calorie calculation which is never going to be accurate when based off of pure heart rate anyways the only accurate calorie test is an calorimetry test which can't be done unless you lock a person in an air tight chamber 4. There's no native apps to create workouts the same way Garmin and Suunto have where you can specify break time run time heart rate goals etc 5. For strength you can't count reps unless you use a 3rd party app but in my personal experience it is quite buggy and you might as well just do it on the phone app 6. as you mentioned GPS 7. if you want music during your workouts without a phone you better have itunes or apple music I tried the apple watch for 3 months after watching your review and DC rainmaker's but have switched back to a Garmin since
Great video Des! I checked the manual online and didn't see any mention of being able to pair an external HRM. Any idea if this is supported or maybe planned to be supported in the future?
Excellent job, currently using Fenix 5 for triathlons, I would much prefer a G-Shock but could find out how it dealt with multi-sport activities or cycling or swimming (which you seem to have missed), seems like the software needs some more maturity before it is a valid option, assuming you can software update the watch?
Does the “Run” exercise function and all the tracking stats only work for a run? Or would it all track for when I go cycling too. Mainly looking for distance, speed, heart rate ect..
I've watched a few reviews on the Casio G-Shock GBD H1000 AND BY FAR you're review is the best , thank you

5) the training monitor should have other sports settings, such as fitness
6) Either I use the app from my telephone or on my tablet. I cannot use it on both as I get disconnected from the other device. What is the sense in that given that I log in with my personal credentials? Let us use the app from whichever device we want
7) while I understand the limitations of having an effective vibrating system in such a small device, I definitely do not understand the really poor alarm sound.
Best review of this watch I could find, very helpful. Thanks
Glad it helped. Thanks!
I bought this watch after watching this video!!!
got me really curious for a replacement for my already dated Fenix 3 when this thing showed up. nice 1st drop from Casio, but looks like a lot of ground to catch vs Garmin. happy to have moved on to Garmin Instinct. UI much improved, and I suddenly appreciate a correctly sized watch on my wrist
Always the best reviews cheers des
Thanks Dusty!
"then I wouldn't need another watch ever again." Until they release a new more tempting G-Shock. lol
Can you do a comparison between the Casio and the Garmin Instinct?
This is a great review, I would also add that you have to also compare the battery life which boast much more stellar times than other smartwatches especially being solar powered.
Yup, amazing battery life out of this watch. Thanks!
I just purchased this gshock yesterday. Before purchasing, I was comparing GBD H1000 and Germin Instinct Solar. In my opinion, garmin has better function, but I only run, therefore I went for Gshock.
Nice work. I love the look of this watch and appreciate your help with all the features.
Sure thing
Very concise and informative
Thank you
Sure thing. Thanks!
Hi can you revist Casio G-Shock Move GBD-H1000 GPS/HR Watch // In-Depth Review in 2021 and see if there has been any improvments since youe last review.
thanks .
Dez what workout watch do you use or recommend? Thanks great reviews always
What a review. Definitely buying one now. Thanks a lot!
Hi Des, how are you? Any live tracking available on this G shock? Thanks. BTW, excellent review as always. Thanks.
No live tracking, but thanks for tuning in!
Thanks for the video! Apart from the optical heartrate it's functionality is far below a Fenix 1, which was launched at least 7 years ago.
absolutely brilliant review! great job !
Thanks!
Maybe they will even come up with a more wearable non-G-Shock watch line with OHR too.
phillip perkins The market will díctate that, not my wishes. If Casio can make another profitable line with OHR they would likely develop it.
Thanks a bunch! Enjoy the Venu!
@@DesFit Do you think heart rate sensor inaccuracy and the calorie miscalculation can be fixed via future firmware update?
I m planning to buy it. Any suggestion if is it worth buying?
Hello
Will you update this review?
Has the watch gotten an update
Great review, just got this watch for Christmas. Are you able to upload data to Strava efficiently ?
Great video, thanks for sharing. Does this watch tell you lat/long or MGRS? Probably not gonna see that until they add a trail feature which you alluded to but just wondering.
Super thorough. Thanks for taking the time!
Thanks a bunch!!
First video of yours i'm seeing. Wildly, impressed. Subscribe.
Thanks!!
Good to see Casio jumping into this market. What is the price for this watch?? Hopefully Casio will put out a more competitive offering when my Garmin Instinct dies one day.
nice work bro....very well explanation about features and functions
Thanks!
Wow that thing is a tank!! 😳 But seems like a small screen for such a huge watch? 🤔
It is not small! 😂
DesFit nah man the screen to body ratio is abysmal
The gbd-100 is almost as big alot cheaper and does the same basic features just doesn't have the heart rate functions and barometer and GPS software. So if you really don't need those features just get the gbd-100 and save yourself some money. The gbd-h100 cost two and a half times more for not that big a difference.
What do you want a plasma on your wrist.
It's because of the solar panel ring.
great review Des!
I wanted your opinion on a specific use case that may be common in some of your other viewers:
Considering the watch only records running, how do you think-:
1) the watch perform while only walking or a mix of walking and running?
Thank you- subbed
Ps:
Has there been any news about an update to the software that you are aware of? The 5bpm accuracy irregularities got me doubting myself whether or not to buy
No update from what I have seen lately. Thanks for tuning in!
Great review! I was looking for an Apple Watch for monitoring daily fitness activity and I found this G-shock today, so I really appreciate it! I will probably stay with the Apple Watch for the moment..
Apple watch fitness is sorely lacking
@Swaggy Toast - The Apple Watch series 4 and 5 have some of the best wrist based heart rate sensors on any wearables. They have lots of sports profiles as well as a really good accelerometer and algorithms that track activities very well. The GPS could be more detailed and the battery life definitely could be better, for sure, but “sorely lacking” isn’t the case.
@@DesFit Let me rephrase Apple watch fitness features are subpar when compared to garmin here's why:
1. while having an arguably better HR sensor the software to view it doesn't really tell you anything. Not only is the heart rate map harder to read it doesn't give you useful CIQ information or things like how much time you spent in each zone
2. Battery life doesn't allow for good sleep tracking unless you remember to charge it before you sleep and when you wake up
3.The different sports profiles don't do much besides change the calorie calculation which is never going to be accurate when based off of pure heart rate anyways the only accurate calorie test is an calorimetry test which can't be done unless you lock a person in an air tight chamber
4. There's no native apps to create workouts the same way Garmin and Suunto have where you can specify break time run time heart rate goals etc
5. For strength you can't count reps unless you use a 3rd party app but in my personal experience it is quite buggy and you might as well just do it on the phone app
6. as you mentioned GPS
7. if you want music during your workouts without a phone you better have itunes or apple music
I tried the apple watch for 3 months after watching your review and DC rainmaker's but have switched back to a Garmin since
Thanks for the review
However I have a question , is it recorded the heart rate all three time or just when we run ?
Great video Des! I checked the manual online and didn't see any mention of being able to pair an external HRM. Any idea if this is supported or maybe planned to be supported in the future?
I asked Casio.and there are no plans to at this time. Thanks!
Thank you for the hard work! I have the same watch and I gained more insights on the indoor training. Thank you!
Sure thing!
Nice review! I don´t want it anymore :) Thanks
Agreed with u
Sad for Casio sports calculation...but win for solar and 20bar ATM... U guys can go for it or Xiaomi TREX Pro
Isn't there supposed to be a newer model coming up this year?
🤷♂️
Thanks for the review. Good looking watch from Casio. I was thinking about buying one but I won't.
Hi!, why does the watch show some heart rate reading in the screen even if it's not placed on your wrist? Thanks!
Hi I dont run but would it be suitable for walking ? great video as usual thanks
Does the “Run” exercise function and all the tracking stats only work for a run? Or would it all track for when I go cycling too. Mainly looking for distance, speed, heart rate ect..
