Okay, fine Josh. Here's what your G5 CFP would look like: 8 Toledo vs 9 New Mexico State -winner plays at 1 Liberty 5 Boise State vs 12 Memphis -winner plays at 4 Miami, OH 6 Tulane vs 11 Memphis -winner plays at 3 James Madison 7 Troy vs 10 UTSA -winner plays at 2 SMU 1/8/9 winner vs 4/5/12 winner 3/6/11 winner vs 2/7/10 winner (highest seed hosts) Top half of bracket winner vs lower half of bracket winner at site TBD (ex. New Orleans Bowl, Las Vegas Bowl, at 49ers stadium, at Det Lions stadium) Some extra bowl games get erased, bowl game qualification moves to 7 wins minimum across all of CFB. Problem solved. You're welcome, America.
I think a ton of CFB fans would love to watch a G5 playoff, to the tune of enough money coming in from it to offset the silly auto bid thing. They just wont take that risk until they have to IMO. Sell it like march madness, it'll get watched!
If the G5 and P4 have two different playoffs, then the FBS might as well just split into two different subdivisions as well (similar to the fbs/fcs split currently). Just make three D1 subdivisions rather than two.
That Boise State win over OU was greatness. I had just moved to Oklahoma a few years prior and was becoming more and more of a fan. Watching that game with many life long OU fans was so much fun. Every OU fan loved that game. It was 100% a, “You gotta hand it to them!” thought. We all love that game. It was one of the best. Off subject but living in Oklahoma and watching Texas play USC for that national title. Talk about living in the twilight zone. Hearing OU fans cheer for Texas????? Strange…..Very strange!
Always love JP’s takes but his g5 hate is one I just can’t get on board with. GOD FORBID G5 schools get ONE SLOT in a 12 team playoff.. I just don’t get the issue. This is how new programs grow, and I still believe in “any given Saturday”. Oh a 3 loss g4 school might lose their at large bid because a g5 school worked their ass off to earn a better record(playing the same game btw, to say they are playing a ‘diffrent game’ is soooooooo disrespectful to all the athletes sacrificing their bodies to this barbaric sport). If they aren’t good enough they’ll get eliminated, but they deserve a chance to show what they got. Countless NFL hall of facets played for g5 school's
“This is how new programs grow” that’s literally the counter argument I want to see someone hit Josh with on this show. Most “elite” program’s were built from the ground up why take that chance away?? Also guarantee there’s are schools in the G5 that are ran better than some p4 schools.
The point is even you recognize g5 and p4 are separate. If they weren't, it wouldn't matter and you can just easily put the 12 best in regardless of conference and if g5 happens to be top 12 then they get a spot. His point is they don't deserve it if they aren't getting there by merit. It's a convoluted topic with a lot of layers but that's the jist
@@kizitokatende412 That’s not a bad point but why do we as a CFB society except the fact that a committee gets to choose who goes to the playoff. Auto bids make the playoff selection objective, it makes college football actual football and less figure skating
When these rosters expand to 100, G5 is done. There's going to be another earth shaping event: the top group removing themselves from conferences like the Sunbelt, CUSA, etc. Not a matter of if, but when. SEC and B10 probably already got things in motion.
just having a g5 playoff would be interesting. i don't care if they can't play for the natty. some good teams that would be fun to watch. the problem would be that some players would be gone by the final game as they would already be sought after and considering offers for a power 4 team.
Doing a G5 playoff would be like making all of the G5 D2. Why are you acting like its not a demotion? Nobody watches D2 football. This would make it so nobody watches the G5. People wanna act like thats not the case, but nobody watches d2 football. Nobody watches the NIT. Josh is an elitist.
The GO5 is going to become a new bridge between P4 and FCS. I’m an alum of a GO5 school. There’s zero shot the stadium ever truly sells enough seats to have a jam packed stadium unless a platform was created that allowed us to play for a championship that can be obtained. If the FCS level can generate excitement (just look at the Dakota and Montana schools!!!) than there’s no reason the GO5 can’t. It would be awesome to see a sold out Hancock Whitney stadium at night with palpable energy that otherwise isn’t felt on any occasion
I think the G5 have to do all they can to remain in the college football playoff system. To do otherwise is to admit they are a substandard organization. I know in reality they never have a chance for all the reasons Josh laid out but its all about perception and by staying in the playoff system they can say at least theoretically they are still in the game. I suspect that if they do not set up something for their teams then in a few years they will have a rude awakening when they are punted out by the P4 playoff.
One of the reasons why I use to dislike college football some years ago was because of there only being a 4 team playoff. I hated that format so I stuck to the NFL. Not only that, I’m a KU fan and we sucked for so long but now we’re competitive and only getting better. Today’s KU football & the 12-team playoff are the main reasons why I’m enjoying college football now. There’s always something to look forward to. People that dislike the expansion really baffles me cause why? This playoff is going to be pure chaos and entertainment. And a G5 being guaranteed a chance to upset a P4 in the playoff just sounds like FUN.
@@VeryGoodDeals Ruin regular season? No. Bowl season? Yes. It ruins it. But shit, I prefer this over a meaningless NY6 bowl game. And yes, I say meaningless because too many teams that make an NY6 game have starters sit out. Which makes the games so pointless for me to watch sometimes. But a 12 team playoff will make everybody bring their best!
@@Kromosz it wont ruin the regular season but now every game wont matter to the level it used to. It’s not that one of the late 00s Boise teams couldn’t knock off Florida once. It’s that most years, the Cincy vs Bama result is what you would get. We need to add more consistency to this sport, and allowing Oregon to skulldrag Liberty every year is so bad for this sport. There’s a reason HS football has different divisions. Because not all schools have the same resources

It’s obvious that it’s not a blowout every year but you wouldn’t know that if you only ever payed attention to the P5 and Josh complaining about Liberty. Even if you take out the G5 teams that are now P4
Even if you take out the G5 teams that are now P4 their still is a BSU win, a Tulane win, WMU loss, Liberty loss, and Memphis loss. That is 2-3 which is slightly lower than 4-6
Josh can’t you see the writing on the wall? The current playoff IS the future G5 championship. SEC and Big 10 will split off and make the new championship at a level above.
A G5 Tournament would definitely be some must-see College Football TV! Would love to see it! Hopefully a major network would pick it up and promote the heck out of it.
The G5 is the planning a playoff for the possibility where they get taken out of the CFP. If they get their slot they won’t do it. No G5 coach is working to win a G5 chip or go to the playoff, they all want the same natty. It’s just a backup plan
Top G5 teams can consistently beat the low performing P4 teams. Do they have the depth to make a full season, no. Can they compete against the top college teams, probably not. However, I’d much rather watch the unknown G5 in the playoffs than a 4th place P4 school that has already proven they can’t beat the top teams in P4. Oh, and the top FCS can consistently beat low level G5s.
Josh, did you see the CST pitch deck for an 8 division super league(10 teams each)? 7 geographic divisions made up of all the current power 4 teams and 1 “under league” division made up of the best of the group of 5. The worst of the under league would be relegated down each season. Seems like a pipe dream but maybe the fairest outcome?
Not sure how I feel about this whole G5 thing. Now I do realize football and basketball are very different but I find it interesting that we have 64 teams basically competing across all conferences in March Madness with zero byes for any top teams or conference winners BUT people can get pissy about football playoffs expanding beyond 4 or beyond 12 teams
Wait @latekickwithjoshpate are we considering the benefits of the transfer portal for the G5? G5 teams can pick up the P4 guys that washed out and can't find playing time and want to see the field?
if they washed out of P4, they are not worthy of being in G5... in most cases, because usually if they wash out, it is either 1) too injury prone, or 2) too lazy to follow directions from the coach, or just not teachable. Regardless of the reason, it will be rare, but not impossible. IMHO.
yeah. youre never gonna get any closer than Cincy did in 2021. and even that took a couple years of building up the reputation of the program to get them in, a decent resume, along with everyone else being weak (ACC, Big 12, Pac 12 conf champs all had 2+ losses)
They should create a G5 Championship game that works as a play-in game for the playoff. Unlike Josh's proposed G5 playoff, this game would actually get views. Then you can have a winner of the G5 and still give them a seat at the table.
Its hilarious how josh comes on all the time and says "i love the G5. Lets kill it. Lets make it so absolutely nobody would care about the G5 ever again by giving them the NIT. A tournament that nobody has watched in over 3 decades. That will help them get better!" Just a foolish take. Josh is an elitist.
He’s the first to throw praise at g5 schools that (regularly) upset big programs during the regular season, and then he comes out with this terrible take. It’s a joke.

What if every 3-4 years, the worst P4 teams in the league are replaced with the best G5 teams? I know that even if we did this only in football, it would be a complicated task, but it would still be very interesting to see.
Josh why are you actively advocating for CFB to turn into the NFL?? There is nothing wrong with G5 having a chance, and making bowl games if they don’t make it. Just as it has always has been.
Quick question; without looking it up, who won the Division 2 FCS championship last year? Don't feel bad, I don't know either. A G5 playoff and championship would be the same way; only the most hardcore of fans(or fans of those schools) would watch or keep up with a G5 playoff and title game. Most importantly, it would be a complete after thought to the current(or p5 playoff, in this scenario). In short, there's more money and attention in the new playoff model and they are hoping for that miracle of a team like UTSA making the title game and beating Alabama(for example), putting them and G5 conferences on the map.
D-II Champion: Harding Bison FCS champion: South Dakota State Jackrabbits Then again, I must be one of those hardcore mutants who watches lower division college sports.
Just go back to Cincinnati vs Georgia. No Shot. They may do great against their own teams, but when they play a non-conference game now days, against an elite team, no trick plays are gonna save them. It is sad, but I totally agree, if you get a great player, at G5... the Power 4 are gonna get him. Coaches standing out in G5, are gonna bail for more money. G5 cannot recruit against the big boys NIL, today. When they some how get a salary cap, based on the positions, then it may even the playing field, if they can get money. But, probably what will happen is when there are salary caps, the teams like Texas and USC will just pay under the table the extra money, like they did before NIL.
@@JoshPateCFB I mean your always talking about how you don’t like the playoff. I said bad for g5, but that might be too harsh, I mean it comparatively.
I still think the highest rank G5 team and the lowest ranked P5 playoff team should have an elimination game (if the G5 team wants to) where, if the G5 team wins, it will be included in the P4 playoff.
Josh Pate is the type of guy who hates TNA Wrestling's "Option C" . And if Josh's dream scenario comes true, the NCAA has to bring back the wooden trophy since it doesn't name a national champion for football.
People like to pretend that every P4-G5 game is Oregon Liberty. Liberty was the lowest ranked G5 team to make the NY6 and got murked. If you remove the G5 teams now at the P4 the G5 is 2-3 instead of 4-6, BOTH ARE 40% even when the top teams are taken they still win games
One day, teams will break away from colleges . . . Incorporate. . . And rent stadiums from Universities. Which will be a necessity for college revenue survial since attending a college live will be similar to the way it was 100 years ago. When that happens “college players” can form a CBA and NIL will be controlled. I wish Saban would just take the mantle of College football czar and save what’s left of tradition and brand loyalty before it gets there. There is zero chance a draft eligible player would play in an NIL tournament that includes non-power 5 schools. Why risk the injury? G5 teams will get blown the F out. They will be playing a top 5 team most likely. While yes, in the past there have been some really good G5 teams. Like UCF, App state, NDST. But outside of a fluke game here and there, and a team that will not be taking them lightly because of the stakes involved - do they really stand a chance? Is Liberty gonna give Bama a run for their money? Not in a million years. Including a G5 team sounds good on paper, but it's a waste of a playoff spot. Imagine putting a G5 team in their guaranteed spot but leaving a 2 loss Ole Miss team out. Which one of those teams actually has a shot?
G5 teams don’t get blown out in the NY6!! So many people have only watched Oregon vs Liberty. The G5 is 4-6 in ny6 (40%) and 2-3 (40%) if you take out the G5 teams that are now P4. Worst game was Liberty vs Oregon Then the Cincy playoff game (lost by 3 scores) Then Memphis and one other lost by 2 scores The other losses were less than 1 score And the G5 got 4 WINS.
I like many of your College football ideas but this is just laughable. On the NIT v NCAA point... how many people watch/care about the NIT compared to the NCAA tournament? And that even has P4 teams!!! Should we stop allowing mid-major teams in the NCAA tournament and just send them to the NIT instead? A G5 playoff would be the de-facto creation of another subdivision of the sport. And if that's the end game, then so be it I guess, but don't pretend that makes more sense for the G5 than a seat at the main table. Because a BIG reason, UCF and other programs have jumped ship for the P4 is because the committee showed that no matter how well they did on the field, that was irrelevant to the postseason somehow. If that's true, why even play the regular season? Why not just skip to the playoffs now and put all the big programs in there while they're still "undefeated". The reason the G5 bid guarantee exists is so that an undefeated or deserving 1 loss G5 team can't "coincidentally" be ranked 13th by the glorified CFP Invitational tournament come playoff time. If a team "not good enough" then loses its first round playoff game because of that, then so be it. The odds are whichever team selected instead would lose on the road vs the top seed(s) anyway!!! Why even expand the playoff just to include teams which clearly don't belong there based upon the evidence of their own schedule? A team with multiple losses is often clearly and obviously not the best team in the country, so why even bother including teams like that in the CHAMPIONSHIP playoff?? Last year, Penn State clearly showed--by losing to OSU and Michigan--that they weren't better than them! In a 12 team playoff, should they have been made to run it back AGAIN, instead of giving an undefeated team the chance at a proper measuring stick of their ability? You can only beat what's in front of you and if your record says undefeated, you should be playing until someone proves they're actually better... ON THE FIELD!!! To do otherwise is the slipperiest of slopes--as we already saw with FSU being excluded last year. As soon as you stop judging the record and start buying into cache and talent arguments and all the other abstract crap, then you defeat the whole purpose of playing the games. Otherwise, why not just pick the playoffs based on the number of 5 stars or Transfer portal signees or size of their NIL fund? Ridiculous take.
So basically A G5 that’s maybe ranked 25 or not ranked jumps every team in front of it because it’s guaranteed lmfao what a fucking joke when there is so many better teams that are average that play in actual good conferences. So they get rewarded for playing cupcakes😂 then jump 10 spots to be in playoffs yup makes sense
I said that the G5 should have their own playoffs, when the playoffs extended. I agree with everything Pat is saying, G5 need to enjoy the couple of years. I say have a super conference with the Big 10 & the SEC
The best Non B1G/SEC champ Team as 5 seed - gets G5 - At home -20+ favorite - then Weaker champ of ACC BXII - -7 points likely for a near walkover to Semis.
Agreed. ND schedule is set up perfectly so they play top 15 teams but not top 5 teams. Look at 2012 and 2018. Name an elite roster on their schedule? You can’t find one. It’s all on purpose.
I think that FBS in all needs to be realigned and divided because the skill gap and even more concerning, the money gap, between them and power five schools is too enormous for them to have a fair chance at competing at division 1 FBS.
G5 autobid is going to result in a more talented football program getting snubbed, especially with the conference realignment that has taken place and will continue to down the road.
@@mike48931 so? It’s the 12th best team. And putting a give me game makes the fifth seed spot more coveted. The 5th spot team is almost always going to be a team that really deserves 2 or 3, but is pushed out of it by champs. It’s going to be the big ten or sec team that would have been a high seed in the playoff that didn’t play for their championship game or their first loss was in the game. So they get a give me game at home against probably the g5 team then they get to play the fourth best champ who they would be favored over, so it kind of evens out.
If the narrative being pushed by this video had any validity at all (it does not) the March Madness as it has been structured for decades would have been shit canned long ago.

Dude, you're whack if you believe Liberty, Boise St, Memphis, App St, or any G5 team could hang with mid-tier Power 4 teams. Let alone elite programs. It's not "hate" it's just a fact.
The truth is, G5s just don’t have the resources to compete with P4s consistently. If they did, they would have been annexed into a P4 by now. Sure they can win a game against a mediocre P4 every once in a while, but you’re kidding yourself if you think any of them will be able to win 4 playoff games in a row
@@McBiscuit18 these middling p4 teams that Josh would rather see in the playoff, have just as slim of a chance. The top g5 team deserves at least the chance to prove they can hang.
Might as well call these G5 teams and push them back down to Division 2 level. Small schools matter. Who else is Bama, Ohio State and Notre Dame gonna play in weeks 1, 3 and 9 of their "Undefeated" seasons? Without the G5 teams, they actually have to play teams that can beat them. I say no more conferences period! Everyone is independent and plays whoever they can get to play. Playoff goes away and only play 6-10 nowl games at the end of the year. Not that hard!
G5 auto bid is a waste of a playoff spot. I’m really sorry towards any G5 fans if you can’t even beat a P4 team you have no hopes of beating a playoff contender. I’d rather see Iowa in a playoff spot than a Boise team

CHANGE THE CORRUPT RULES! Don’t kick half the FBS to the curb!
just having a g5 playoff would be interesting. i don't care if they can't play for the natty. some good teams that would be fun to watch. the problem would be that some players would be gone by the final game as they would already be sought after and considering offers for a power 4 team.
And a G5 being guaranteed a chance to upset a P4 in the playoff just sounds like FUN.
expanded playoff diminishes the regular season and ruins bowl season more for the teams who don't make it
@@VeryGoodDeals Ruin regular season?
No one cares bro.
I’m convinced you just pull shi out of your azz that meema says. I gotta find this woman
G5 went 4-6 in NY6 games. Not a winning record but they sure didn’t get blown out every year
When they won it felt like a miracle. When they lost it was expected and it was normally ugly
@@RadicallyOptimistic So we going off feelings now? Also their not usually ugly, let’s go through this
2014: No 20 Boise State beats 10 Arizona 38-30 (BSU was the second lowest ranked G5 team to go to the NY6 and still won)
2015: No 18 Houston beats 9 FSU by 2 touchdowns
2016: No 16 WMU losses by one score to No 8 Wisconsin
2017: No 12 UCF beats 7 Auburn (who beat both teams that played in the natty) by 8
2018: No 8 UCF losses to No 11 LSU by 1 score
2019: No 17 Memphis losses to No 10 Penn State by 2 touchdowns (biggest “blowout” besides the playoff game and Liberty)
2020: No 8 Cincy losses to No 9 UGA by 3 points. Their was 2 g5 teams in the top 12 in 2020 (undefeated coastal) but the committee had to give the Orange Bowl the ACC 3rd place ( no. 13 UNC) and No 25 Oregon got the Fiesta as the PAC champ lol
2021: Cincy losses the playoff game by 3 scores
2022: No 16 Tulane beats no 10 USC who was 1 game away from the playoff
2023: Liberty got blown out by Oregon
In the P5’s 6 wins there was 1 3+ score win a 3 score win, a 2 score win, and the other 3 were 1 score or less.
It would not. No audience outside of those teams fandom will watch what will eventually be the d2 playoffs.
G5 would die so fast.
Just like how everyone watches the FCS Playoffs. Wait they don't!
If it ever happens, App state will be the first G5 team to win the CFP
Within two years, the playoff will be Big Ten and SEC only.
Bold prediction: Nick Saban will get sick of being at home and go coach UAB to not have to deal with NIL bidding.
I have been wanting a G5 playoff ever since the CFP started at 4. I would watch the G5 playoff over any P4 games that my favorite team isn’t in.
IMHO.
of course it could all be the coach, and maybe another coach can improve the player, in that case, another P4 will get them.
G5 playoff would be great TV and I absolutely would watch
G5 might win a first round game, never a championship. The talent gap is too large. They should use POWER rankings, not the AP or coaches poll.
yeah. youre never gonna get any closer than Cincy did in 2021. and even that took a couple years of building up the reputation of the program to get them in, a decent resume, along with everyone else being weak (ACC, Big 12, Pac 12 conf champs all had 2+ losses)
*Welcome back to my iPhone Josh!! Time to start watching everyday…*
Right
They should create a G5 Championship game that works as a play-in game for the playoff.

The 5 seed will almost have a bye.
And then play the 4 seed next. Ohio St should just forfeit the Big 10 title to get the 5 seed
5 seed is arguably a better position than 1 seed.
They won’t

Professor Pate has Liberty (that played like Alvin and the Chipmunks in the Fiesta Bowl last year 45-6) going to the playoffs
Josh Pate is the type of guy who hates TNA Wrestling's "Option C" .
And if Josh's dream scenario comes true, the NCAA has to bring back the wooden trophy since it doesn't name a national champion for football.
Where Josh was right…again
Just structure it like the NIT Tourney where it is the 12 teams who missed the cut.
They would just pick the p4 that didn't make it.
People like to pretend that every P4-G5 game is Oregon Liberty.
Liberty was the lowest ranked G5 team to make the NY6 and got murked.
The playoff game was 3 scores
2 NY6 games were 2 scores
3 were 1 score or less
The other 4 games the G5 WON against a at least top 10 team, even Boise State at no 20 beat at a top 10 team.
If you remove the G5 teams now at the P4 the G5 is 2-3 instead of 4-6, BOTH ARE 40% even when the top teams are taken they still win games
Stop using facts, they just don’t want the little guys to build something.
The powers that be don't want the little guy to potentially displace them. That's all this is. Big money in maintaining the status quo!
The power 5 tourney would be the chance some athletes need to transfer to a power 5 or make it to the NFL.

Terrible Idea
I hope you have no influence in any meaningful decisions bro.
G5 auto bid is a waste of a playoff spot. I’m really sorry towards any G5 fans if you can’t even beat a P4 team you have no hopes of beating a playoff contender. I’d rather see Iowa in a playoff spot than a Boise team
You’re crazy😂😂
A G5 playoff would be fine. Just choose the best teams for it. We don’t want to see Boise State, Memphis, Liberty etc competing for a lesser championship than Vandy and Indiana
