Wouldn’t mind those conferences structured like that for sure. If we are going to have a playoff, at least have all of them in bowl games. I’m not sure I’m going to like this home field advantage crap. Too much like the NFL and no respect for the traditions of the sport we all grew up loving.
OU fan here. I think I speak for all of us when I say that if we're bringing back both the SWC and the Big 8 we would rather be in the Big 8 and keep our historic rivalries and just play Texas in a midseason out of conference game. That being said if I were in charge of realignment I would resurrect the original Big 12 (1996-2010) instead.
I miss the feel of the old Big 12. It was just a blast back in the day watching all the different conference. The games had a different look, feel, style of play unique to each conference.
Of course OU would prefer that, because the old SWC is hot garbage outside of Texas/A&M. Texas would prefer that too. That's why the Big 12 happened. 😉

One of my favorite segments you’ve ever done. There is an alternate reality where this is our CFB and it’s just upsetting that instead of this, we are getting these mega conferences where rivalries and regionality now mean nothing.
BYU and Utah need to be in the same conference so they can have their rivalry every year, it's one of the most under-appreciated rivalries in the sport
What’s cool about this is they can have a protected rivalry. Utah being in the Big 8 means they only have 7 conference games, need 5 more games to fill and one of them can be BYU every year, another could be Utah State. Still have 3 more cupcake teams they can add to the schedule if they wanted. Kind of ideal for them honestly In addition, BYU is independent so they can definitely schedule this one game every single year

@@joshfisher1299 ND is in the midwest and rivals with uM, while also pairing with Indy and Purdue. PSU pairs with Temple and PITT. a major focus of my realignment is to preserve regionalism, to keep the major powers spread out and to maintain/restore rivalries. each team gets 4 non con games to do whatever they want (almost). PSU can maintain it's new found rivalry w/ OSU as an annual non con game
@@joshfisher1299 . . . and you cant just focus on the big brands; you have to give the lower brands a chance to capitalize on winning seasons. there's a reason teams like cincy, rutgers, uconn, memphis, and houston only show up like once every 5-10 years, the conferences are unbalanced. they need to have the same conference structure and scheduling rules. this addresses: in conference strength of schedule, fan and student travel, rivalries, teams purposely scheduling cupcakes, and forces more teams to play quality opponents more often in general (all of which equals fewer dips in revenue per game for the greedy pigs and better product for viewers)
@dlpaul345 Like I said, PSU would leave this scenario. Also, PSU and ND at one point were also considered rivals. If you are going to force everyone into a conference and not have independents, then ND with OSU and UM will get us into the same situation we're in now. The biggest brands need to be split out amongst conferences relatively evenly.

The amount of people that don't care for the G5 in ANY manner and think they shouldn't even be in the CFP is INSANE. Liberty played an all G5, no FCS, schedule and went 13-0 with a C-USA Championship, and people acted like Liberty played half of their schedule against high school, JuCo, and NAIA schools. They did have their glory days while in the SWC. They are more of a mid level team, and conference realignment is making it almost impossible for these mid level teams to rise up and have a good season with a chance at a championship. There is no room to breathe in college football anymore.
Almost, there’s some classic teams that get left out, and in this concept, otherwise weve would have just seen 180 schools just have their football programs shut down for no reason
@@michaelchirichella2380if there is a scenario where the ACC stays afloat and rebuilds, I can see Memphis being invited, along with Oregon St & Wash St. (might as well make a Western pod, unless the PAC rebuilds also, as they say they intend to). Memphis is a rising program.
Exceptional job. I would go for this in a heartbeat. Interest would be created by the regional rivalries. Furthermore a playoff featuring conference champions, would also create interest and regional pride. Which "virtue is more emotionally important to people, "greed" or "pride"? Ultimately "pride" is more important to people who will, in the long run, spend more money on the sport. Following college sports is an emotional experience and greed is a shallow emotion.
I think I would love to see this, but you have to have OU in the big 8 and move Utah and BYU into the same conference. OU and Texas would still play every year like they did pre-big 12 days.
I have always said that a team in one conference should play every other team in their own conference every year. It is absurd that these big teams are playing the FCS opponents some weeks and not someone else in their own conference. Heck, in basketball, teams typically play each other twice. I understand the safety concerns of too many games, but smaller conference sizes can ensure that teams don't play too many games. Thank you for stating that!
Just do what Chip Kelly said to do and have all Power conference and possibly even group conference share a single TV contract. Introduce some sort of revenue sharing model that still rewards the bigger schools and school success but still keeps the other schools competative.
@@tmcobb04 I think you could create a model where the pie is broken up by a formula consisting of: 1) Base, equally divided to all teams 2) % based on viewership + attendance/game 3) % based on weekly rankings (combination of current polls + AI, or NET-style) Post season payouts based on invites & performance/wins. And I think the PARTICIPATING athletes should get a huge amount of the post-season payouts. It would incentivize them to not sit out. (Give equal amounts to those who are out due to injury, but if you CHOOSE to not play, then… no soup for you.)
@@insertcolorherehawk3761 You could go that route, but if I were in charge the the CFP wouldn’t be a separate entity. It would simply be a part of college football like everything else. All the money made by the CFP would be divided up to the teams that made it with a bonus depending on how far you make it. You could even find a way to divide up money made to other schools on the conferences based on how each conference performs in the playoff.
As a spokesman of the West Virginia fan conglomerate, I approve of these conferences, however I believe in the pit of my being that Mimi and Virginia Tech belong in the big east, I have spoken.
Put the Big East dream together: Penn State, Pitt, WVU, Syracuse, BC, Rutgers, Miami, VT, Louisville, UConn. Invite back Nova, G-town, Seton Hall, Providence, for B-ball. The BB tournament at MSG would be insane.
Utah doesn’t have history with any of the Big 8 teams other than Colorado and is both geographically and culturally farther from the Big8 teams than the PAC teams.
I think Northwestern would drop football if it was forced out of the Big Ten. It would be too hard and expensive to build a schedule even if they played ND, Stanford, Duke, and Illinois every year. How do you find 8 other opponents without having a pseudo-Big Ten schedule?

To be honest if they were going to bring in Utah they should have brought BYU in with them. I don't care how pissy Stanford or California will get. Or they could have brought in Nevada and UNLV to take advantage of the Las Vegas market.
6:15 OU fan here and my heart says big 8 because of history and tradition. Not fearful for the reasons you mentioned. As long as Red River was preserved it would be nice to also have the Nebraska game back.
This is the best conference realignment I have seen the only thing I would do differently is put Northwestern back in the Big Ten and remove South Florida from the Big East and put in Penn State. I'm an old guy and seeing Penn State in the Big Ten and no longer playing Pitt, Syracuse, and West Virginia is something I still can't get my head around.

This is way too logical. All conference champions would automatically get invitation to play off. The remaining spots are given to teams according to ranking. 16 team playoff just the rest of CFB divisions do.
He saying there should only be 8 spots in the college football playoff an since in his world there are 7 conferences they get auto bids an then 1 school from a group of 5 would get the last spot. then you have your 8 team playoff that way. 💯 better than what we have now. As an SU fan, my DREAM Big East would also have Penn St, Miami, and VT. We used to play Maryland often back during Big East years, so it doesn’t feel “weird” to me. But I get it- nobody wants to be in the “Cooties Conference”, so please don’t come at me - I realize my dreams are crazy in today’s world. USF & UCF are great teams, but not a ton of rivalry history there. If the Independents needed a home and we bumped conferences a bit bigger to do so, UConn would make sense to add, and even Vandy would fit well with this footprint if SEC was ready for a change. (And nobody would say no to ND, but I acknowledge that wouldn’t happen.) But even if this proposal had to stay exactly as proposed… this could save the beauty that is the game of college football. Sad that money, greed, and some weak conference “leaders” have brought us to this sad state of affairs. 😢
@@foreverorangegirl44 love your response but the main reason Maryland should be in the acc is rivalries in basketball. THE event of the year was when Maryland hosted Duke. At my graduation ceremony, three speeches ended with beat/f Duke haha. Maryland is a basketball school and we miss the ACC during basketball season so much. The big east wouldn’t be terrible because they would have an old rival in West Virginia but Maryland football has never had any true rivalries. You’d think Virginia or navy would be our best rivals in football but there’s never been any animosity between the fan groups.
Much respect for your desire to realign. I came up with my own as well. 8 divisions of 9. Love the idea. Needs tweaking. 7 conferences still hurts your potential playoffs. The problem this year is a team that won there conference was left out. 7 conferences still leaves a debate open for whose in and whose out. 8 conferences is perfect for 8 team playoffs. Win your conference make the playoffs. Simple. No arguing over who got in and who didn't. You don't win your conference your OUT. Plus 8 teams is the right number of teams for a playoff. Any more then that waters down the product. Especially with 8 conferences. Your playoffs consist of the top 8 teams that won their conference and are viying for the College Football Championship. Now how that broken up is open for debate but that's the fix.
This is brilliant. As a guy who played ncaa football, I use to love rearranging the conferences. However, the big 8, big east, and southwest conference where not available. I hope the new college football game will have the old conferences available.
I don’t play video games, but I understand how highly anticipated this game release is, and how highly-played it is. It would be nice if the powers that be would look at what the fans are creating as their own fantasy scenarios, and allow for those historic conferences (and custom-created ones) in the game. My guess would be that the customization would show FAR more fans creating smaller, regional/historical conferences, than just a Power 2/3. It would be fascinating to look at the data.
Vandy is more controversial to me bc their founder was a leader in creating the SEC in the first place. If you take history into account, you can’t remove the school that helped create the conference you’re kicking it out of.
Vandy isn’t immune to being kicked out of the SEC, and I don’t care about their “academic” representation because if that mattered so much then Georgia Tech would’ve never been kicked out either lol
War on I-4 returns? As a conference game? Got my thumbs up!!! Would love to see this happen, would make college ball SO much more fun to watch. (not that it isn't already)
I like the your idea of putting South Carolina with the ACC, they could thrive there, instead of being buried in the SEC. I have a Power 4 (16 team each format) with one exclusively academic conference. I moved LSU to SWC to even the conferences and it works geographically:
SEC Alabama Auburn Georgia Florida Clemson South Carolina FSU Miami Tennessee Kentucky Louisville Memphis Ole Miss Miss State NC State North Carolina
SWC Texas LSU Oklahoma Oklahoma St. Texas A&M Texas Tech Missouri Arkansas Kansas State Kansas TCU Baylor SMU Houston Arizona Arizona State
Big North Ohio State Michigan Penn State Michigan State Notre Dame Purdue West Virginia Virginia Tech Pitt Cincinnati Indiana Illinois Maryland Virginia Syracuse Rutgers
Big West USC UCLA Oregon Washington Washington St. Oregon State Stanford Cal Nebraska Colorado Wisconsin Minnesota Iowa State Iowa Utah Boise State or BYU
Oh man, how could you put OU in that s***** Southwest conference with all those Texas schools and Arkansas? No no, no. We are the kings of the big eight conference and it would be nice to have that Nebraska rivalry in November back
Just make this happen. I agree 100000000%. Would’ve done a few different things but this is a million times better than the shit show that we have today with conferences
Makes sense for the most part. Each conference, including the "Big 8" should be 10 teams, play 9 conference games plus one cupcake and two from the other major conferences. The problem is the SEC and ESPN who won't relinquish any control and don't realize they are killing the goose that laid the golden egg.
YES, love it. Though it would change the name of the Big 8, I would put Oklahoma and Iowa in there to get every conference to 10, you have spare teams or other teams to fix the gaps I just left in the Big 10 and South West. Everyone in conference plays everyone else is how it should be. I hope you do away with conference championship games. Tell us you playoff scenario, I'm sure it will interest me.
I think Michigan and ND doesn't necessarily need to spend money on advertising because their name sells for itself like other Top Collegiate Schools from their highly announced academics, world-class facilities, etc. Where else, other schools need the advertising locally, national and globally, to announce their brand for unheard ears
Because very few people have heard of the University of Alabama, University of Southern California, University of Florida, or The Ohio State University. The advertising that Josh spoke of was not advertising their own school, it's the advertising of commercial products.
If you had a single TV contact with all "College Football, Inc.," this is easy. If you reset the conferences but have each conference have their own TV contacts, then the process we are on now starts again from from the reset point.
Brilliant, love it, been working on a similar setup for at least 25-years. Going beyond: I would force Norte Dame and Northwestern into your Big 8 Conference and call it the Mid America 10 Conference. I would create an Independent 10 conference and it would include: Boise State, BYU, Colorado State, Massachusetts, Memphis, San Jose State, Tulane, U. Conn, Vanderbilt, and Wyoming; I know, The Traveling Big 10 might be a better name. There is your 16-Team National Championship bracket with the conference champion and runner-up getting in. The winner of the Independent 10 Conference would have the option, repeat option, to trade places with the last place team in any other conference. Any other football program not included among these 80 teams, with a sufficiently good record, would have the option, repeat option, to trade places with the last place team in the independent 10 Conference.
Duke fan over here. As much as we dislike Maryland, they're a better fit for the ACC. Maryland was in the ACC, Miami was in the Big East, so I propose a simple trade. It'll expand the Big East Florida department and restore most of the ACC founding teams (looking at you, South Carolina).
If I could prognosticate for a moment, I foresee the larger brands within the jumbo conferences having serious squabbles over financials in 6-ish or so years (likely spurred by changing viewing habits, inflexible leadership, and preferred access to a larger playoff system as catalysts), and smaller conferences become the preferred business model again. 10-12 teams per conference, as many as 7 power conferences by 2030, lots of non-conference games per year to satisfy gen z viewing habits (which are yet to be truly determined, but could be a major factor in where the money goes.)
Because both were in a “power” conference before when they were in the Big East. Except for Rice, don’t think he elevated any other current G5 programs in his proposal. Rice too had previously been in a Power Conference, though many years ago.
As a Hokie in a family with West Virginia fans, I would've suggested West Virginia and Virginia Tech in the same conference. The last match-up we had was probably one of my favorite games as a Marching Virginian in Lane Stadium ('20-'23 was not a great time for VT football, cut me some slack). If you look in the past 40 years (26 matchups) Virginia Tech is 14-12 meaning it's been a toss up and good rivalry for a while
Oklahoma in SWC doesn’t make sense. OU and Texas played as non conference foes for like the first century of the rivalry. Oklahoma owned the Big 8 and belongs there. 🙋🏼♂️OU fan weighing in.

I agree with the majority of it, but I wish VT would be in the same division as West Virginia because of how much we make each other's blood boil
OU and Ok St were members of the SWC, both teams left in the 1920s
It’s crazy how great the original Big 12 was and failed.

I miss so much when the conference you were from told us where you were at
One of my favorite segments you’ve ever done.
Kind of ideal for them honestly
In addition, BYU is independent so they can definitely schedule this one game every single year
Wait until you find out about the Florida state florida rivalry, or the countless other inter conference rivalries that happen yearly...
Rivalries are come out of conference. Take it from a Kentucky fan who gets to kick Louisvilles ass every year

I was typing the same identical comment!
Arkansas wouldn't/didn't want to be the only non Texas team in the SWC either.
Because they used to cheat us
They did have their glory days while in the SWC. They are more of a mid level team, and conference realignment is making it almost impossible for these mid level teams to rise up and have a good season with a chance at a championship. There is no room to breathe in college football anymore.
Arkansas is top 25 all time despite our recent problems. That’s not mid level despite what an elephant opines.
Why?
Let’s add Tulne and let OU stay in the Big 8. Or leave out Rice and add OKST.
Everyone who loves college football, loves your idea on these conference alignments.
Almost, there’s some classic teams that get left out, and in this concept, otherwise weve would have just seen 180 schools just have their football programs shut down for no reason
Those are some amazing conferences
I would add Iowa and Byu to the Big 8. Notre Dame to Big 10. Then you got 7 badass conferences.
Notre Dame must remain independent, it's part of our catholic identity 🇻🇦

Fire up Chips!
Josh Pate for commissioner ! Great Conferences.
PUT THIS MAN IN CHARGE PLEASE
This is excellent and would be close to ideal.
Yo, the SWC and BIG8 would be LIT!!!!
I actually want the power teams on the road to the FCS, and especially on the road to the FCS powers for some classic showdowns
LOVE this content! Want more historical look backs, JP!
Most logical thing I've heard anyone say in a while
I always find conference realignment fascinating and have worked on my version for years. Pretty good video with an interesting perspective and ideas.
The TV deals would ruin everything. ESPN/Fox would pay the SEC and Big 10 more than the other conferences and then teams would start to jump ship.
Just do what Chip Kelly said to do and have all Power conference and possibly even group conference share a single TV contract. Introduce some sort of revenue sharing model that still rewards the bigger schools and school success but still keeps the other schools competative.
@@tmcobb04 I think you could create a model where the pie is broken up by a formula consisting of:
1) Base, equally divided to all teams
2) % based on viewership + attendance/game
3) % based on weekly rankings (combination of current polls + AI, or NET-style)
Post season payouts based on invites & performance/wins. And I think the PARTICIPATING athletes should get a huge amount of the post-season payouts. It would incentivize them to not sit out. (Give equal amounts to those who are out due to injury, but if you CHOOSE to not play, then… no soup for you.)
@@tmcobb04Essentially make the CFP contract be the regular season contract?
@@insertcolorherehawk3761 You could go that route, but if I were in charge the the CFP wouldn’t be a separate entity. It would simply be a part of college football like everything else. All the money made by the CFP would be divided up to the teams that made it with a bonus depending on how far you make it. You could even find a way to divide up money made to other schools on the conferences based on how each conference performs in the playoff.

To be honest if they were going to bring in Utah they should have brought BYU in with them. I don't care how pissy Stanford or California will get. Or they could have brought in Nevada and UNLV to take advantage of the Las Vegas market.

Your playoffs consist of the top 8 teams that won their conference and are viying for the College Football Championship. Now how that broken up is open for debate but that's the fix.
Love it. Who would you have in mind?
Notre Dame and BYU to the Big 8, every conference needs 10 schools.
BYU and Iowa to the Big 8, add Notre Dame to the Big 10.
Vandy doesn't take sports seriously.
The colonists kicked the Brits out of the country. Vandy can be kicked out of the SEC. Just like Tulane.
Vandy isn’t immune to being kicked out of the SEC, and I don’t care about their “academic” representation because if that mattered so much then Georgia Tech would’ve never been kicked out either lol
Vandy is in the SEC for baseball and their academics. If they weren’t good in one of those they wouldn’t be in.
@@cane870 Nobody cares about baseball, and if academics mattered, Harvard and Yale would be getting invites.
I watched the first 48 seconds of this and I already agree totally w what this guy is saying
This guy is about to start a war lol. I like his ideas.
War on I-4 returns? As a conference game? Got my thumbs up!!! Would love to see this happen, would make college ball SO much more fun to watch. (not that it isn't already)
Iowa was never in the big 8, Joined the big 10(west) in 1899.
You’re technically right (which is the best kind of right.) But Iowa was in Missouri Valley and Big10 from 1907-1908. So they do have Big 8 ties.
This vid pops up in my feed literally right after I moved FIU to the ACC in my dynasty 😂
My only change… add Oklahoma and BYU to the Big 8 and call them the Real Big Ten just to make the Big Ten mad.
Love it!! Everything about it!! 👋👋👋🙌🙌
As a 90s kid this felt like therapy. Absolutely nailed it Pate.

I like the your idea of putting South Carolina with the ACC, they could thrive there, instead of being buried in the SEC. I have a Power 4 (16 team each format) with one exclusively academic conference. I moved LSU to SWC to even the conferences and it works geographically:

Oh man, how could you put OU in that s***** Southwest conference with all those Texas schools and Arkansas? No no, no. We are the kings of the big eight conference and it would be nice to have that Nebraska rivalry in November back
Josh continues to provide hope for humanity.
Southwest conference was my dream! It was perfect
Iowa was never in the Big 8
Iowa was a founding member of the big 8. 1907-1911.
In 5 years it’s just gonna be the SEC and Big 10. I really love these conference realignments
Your re-alignment is so much better than what we have now! I wish this was reality.
WHO THIS FOR JOSH
Me
Brilliant, love it, been working on a similar setup for at least 25-years.
Going beyond:
I would force Norte Dame and Northwestern into your Big 8 Conference and call it the Mid America 10 Conference.
I hate to agree w/ a Dookie, but he's right. MD goes to the ACC & VT or The "u" goes to the Big East.
How is it that Boise State is continually passed up for being in a power conference but somehow USF and UCONN get a spot at the table???
Unfortunately money drives all sports. ie: market size....
Because both were in a “power” conference before when they were in the Big East. Except for Rice, don’t think he elevated any other current G5 programs in his proposal. Rice too had previously been in a Power Conference, though many years ago.
Yes. As an ND *and* Rice (grad school) alum, I’d love to see the SWC back.
NO we do NOT want to be in a conference.
I love it. The only problem is that this won’t actually be a reality. 😢
College football has been hijacked. Sad.
