Good breakdown. That Team Up North just does a better job of handling adversity. They've been the better team for three years. No excuses. On the Ohio State side, Day is a good coach and I like him, but this might not really be the right job for him. He looks stressed, he cares about the noise, his team is a reflection of him. There's so much pressure in Columbus.

A thought on Ryan day; one of the many reasons that so much weight is put on the Michigan game and he's getting so much criticism is its the one game on their schedule that they don't have a MASSIVE talent advantage. You don't have to be a good coach to beat Michigan st or Minnesota with that roster. The measure of a coach is what happens when the talent is fairly equal. And in those games his record is unimpressive

It was a great game. I'm a Buckeye fan so it was tough to take another loss to Michigan. That said, Michigan has been the better team the last 3 years. I am old enough to have experienced the pendulum swing one way and the other over the decades. It happens. OSU had a tremendous run against UM from 2000 to 2019, winning 17 times in that period. Tressel went 9-1 vs UM. Luke Fickel lost in his interim year. Then Urban went 7-0 vs UM. The Ryan Day won his first game in 2019. Ryan would have won the game in 2020 but it was cancelled due to Covid. But credit Michigan for being patient with Harbaugh and now he has won the last 3. Harbaugh is now 3-5 vs OSU but these last 3 years have been impressive because UM also has one of the better teams in the country. So now we will see how Ohio State responds. All that said the Buckeyes played well and it was not a blowout like last year. The difference in this game was QB play. OSU had an inexperienced first-year guy and UM had a good veteran. Congrat to my Michigan friends. I hope we get you next year. As for Ryan Day being fired that is nothing more than OSU fans letting the rivalry get to them. Yes, it's a big deal but you don't just go fire a coach who is 56-7 in his 5 years of coaching. Unless you know for fact that you can bring back Urban I'm not sure getting rid of Ryan Day solves any issues.

But I’ve never been happier to be wrong. 2020 was rough, but I’m glad that the higher ups had faith in his system and his vision. When the stars align so with the qb, offense and defense OSU will be even better and win a natty with Day. For OSU it really comes down to one thing. When they have a semi mobile top tier QB the offense shines and puts up 40 or more each game. Their offense is not built for pro style smashmouth. Now that they have a really strong defense, if they get someone who is more in line with Fields and Stroud and remember to keep using guys like Trayanum who is a better back than Henderson, they're NC level. They should leave the coaching tree alone except getting an OC that is more in line with the previous one but keep Hartline as he's their best recruiter.

In 2021, Michigan beat Ohio State because of physicality and efficiency. The Wolverines dominated the Buckeyes on both lines of scrimmage and moved the ball up and down the field with rampant efficiency through both the run and passing game.
In 2022, Michigan beat Ohio State because of explosive plays. Michigan forced Ohio State to meticulously drive the ball down the field with consistency while generating 5 plays of 40+ yards themselves.
While the last 2 seasons felt like Michigan taking advantage of a matchup and winning through that aspect (lines of scrimmage in 2021 and secondary in 2022), this felt different. Michigan beat Ohio State by just straight up being the better team. The Wolverines stayed on schedule offensively more effectively and even for as well played the game generally was, Michigan always both responded and/or stayed a step or two ahead. Their quarterback didn’t make mistakes, their run game stepped up more, and their defense got crucial stops and turnovers.
Josh nailed it, Michigan’s entire operation is just a little ahead of Ohio State’s right now, and this team is absolutely capable of winning a national championship. They’ve been the most consistently dominant team all season and should probably be #1 in the playoff rankings tomorrow, and I say that as a Georgia fan.

Prior to the alleged sign-stealing in 2021 Michigan had an average rank of 31 in points allowed under Harbaugh. Since the alleged scheme began that has risen to an average rank of 5th.
Correlation doesn’t equal causality, but the timing of Michigan’s rapid defensive rise is a little suspect. Outside of their 2016 season the team was middling defensively, and now they are one of the most dominant units in FBS.
In addition, 2021 was when Michigan signed Harbaugh to a massive four-year extension that paid him $7.3M per year - and came after a woeful COVID-shortened 2020 in which rumors began that the coach might be looking to return to the NFL. This was furthered in 2022 when Harbaugh interviewed with the Minnesota Vikings over their head coaching vacancy, and was linked to the Las Vegas Raiders job, before ultimately deciding to return to Michigan.
So as a total package we have a coach who was under a lot of pressure to win to justify his new contract, with a history of breaching NCAA rules, and at least flirtations with the NFL to potentially return. It’s far from a smoking gun, but it is a breeding ground where sign-stealing could have become a viable option to meet these goals.

For whatever reason, you didn’t even notice the southern rivalries in the northeast & until the last decade or so, you didn’t have outlets to watch SEC/ACC football takes like this channel. Maybe Notre Dame vs USC was second, but a distant one. College football is a regional sport.

it's rare-sometimes quarterbacks do win titles with non-elite organizations. See Jameis Winston and Cam Newton.
QB level of play is the reason Ohio State has dominated in Big 10 most of the time in the past 2 decades. McCord reminds me of Todd Boeckman level of QB play. He just does not go through progressions like good qbs need to. Maybe he will take a leap next year but typically you would just go to a more explosive, younger QB after losing out with this talented of a roster. Day will not be fired and that talk is stupid. The one thing that is crazy from the game is that they did not force feed the ball to Harrison on easy completions- he is a monster. Was disappointed that Harrison did not try to tackle, fight through, or play defense on that first terrible interception. The missed OPI on Cornelious Johnson was a game killer on the last long drive by MI. Overall a much better performance than last year from Buckeyes.
I am curious how much losing Kevin Wilson took out of our offensive performance this year. I'm pretty sure he contributed a ton to the offenses in the previous Day years and I wonder if Hartline still needs to grow to fill that void. Just because Hartline is an awesome recruiter and WR coach doesn't mean he filled that void. Justin Frye doesn't seem to be delivering on the hype and the special teams clearly need an overhaul with the liability they are.

regarding the slam dunk head coach hire, other than saban, it's only urban meyer. I say this as a michigan fan, but he's by far the best head coach I've seen. Examples below.
    Utah before urban: 5-6
Utah after Urban: 12 - 0 their second year.
    Florida before urban: 7-5
Florida after urban: championship second year, and 3, 13-1 seasons in 6 years
    OSU before urban: 8 - 4
OSU after urban: Undefeated first year, championship by 3rd year, and 83-9 overall.
Dude may have off the field problems, but as a coach there's literally nobody better except nick saban (and i give saban his respect due to being consistently dominant and building a dynasty).

However, you have to get after JJ and not just with 4 because he'll leak out and make a couple plays. He had his second worse QBR of the season against the blitz. Problem was OSU only ran 4 blitzes. Not to mention the abysmal LB play from OSU and that was the game. The first INT was huge and gifted UM 7 points and set the tone for the game. Josh, you make a good point that one game shouldn't define a coach. But, as you said, Ryan Day has six losses that matter: three at the championship level, and three at the rivalry level. Both are arguably more impactful to both the program and the fanbase than any other regular season game normally would be. So yes, he might be a really damn good coach, but if his ceiling is being unable to win the games that DO matter more than anything else, then how good of a coach is he, really? In the context of sports as a whole, it's not the easy matchups that matter. It's the hardest, toughest, weirdest moments that really test your mental toughness, as you mentioned. As a Michigan fan, I personally don't think OSU fans calling for Ryan Day's head is an overreaction, but I also think it's invalid in some ways. Michigan has the deepest, toughest team in college football this year. Period. Ohio couldn't handle us even at our best because, as you said, they're player-reliant rather than player-led.

I think he's about as good a coach as Frank Solich, who came very close to winning a title with Nebraska, then when he was let go there coached for 20 years straight at a smaller school until he retired because he was about 90 years old.
He's not an ELITE coach. and tOSU was very fortunate to have two ELITE coaches in Tressel and then Urban Meyer. Now the fans aren't satisfied with any coach who isn't ELITE.

Funny you mention the military. I use that analogy all the time when talking about what it takes to build a championship team in any type of team atmosphere. I am a former US Marine and one thing I ALWAYS look for and I have been looking at Michigan in this light is a team that fights for each other. That is created by a smart coach who understands that and instills that into his coaching staff and players. You saw what The interim coach said after each of his 3 wins… “thats for you coach Harbaugh, we love you”. When people genuinely love each other and fight for each other you win at whatever it is you are trying to accomplish. Did you see where Harbaugh went Sunday? Thats right here was at the hospital with his injured player and his family. These players would fight and die for each other. They will be national champs!!!
