HOW TO MAKE REFRIED BEANS EXTRA CREAMY AND DELICIOUS: Simple Down Home Recipe

- This is one of the most requested recipes I get, and to be honest, it's not much of a recipe so much as it is down home cooking. That said, I suppose there are a couple of tips for making Refried Beans extra creamy and delicious. So, I decided to break it all down as simply as possible in this video. I won't bother to write measurements, like I normally do. But here are a few answers to questions you may have:
When I cook beans in the crockpot, I cook them on Low for six hours. That's just how I do it. They can also be cooked on High if you want them done sooner.
If you cook beans on the stovetop, let them come to a boil, reduce the heat to Low and let them simmer gently for about 2 hours. Just keep an eye on them to make sure the water doesn't evaporate while they're cooking. You may need to add a little or the beans will burn. 2 hours is about the average length of time beans will take to cook, but it will depend on how many beans you're cooking and if you pre-soaked your beans. Use a fork to press down on them, and if they're tender enough to smash easily, they're done.
I find that beans keep in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. If you don't think you'll be using them by then, you can absolutely freeze them. In fact, I sometimes cook large batches of beans just so that I can freeze them in small containers and pull them out when I need them. They keep in the freezer for about six months.
If you have questions, feel free to leave them in the comments.

This is a staple in EVERY Hispanic home. When I cook them in my house the smell can literally bring me back to walking in to my mom's house, grandma's house, or an aunts house. ❤ Sometimes my husband is happy just to have beans, cheese, and tortilla for dinner
That is so true! I was named after my tia Marcela, who had a tiny little kitchen where she always made thee BEST beans. Sometimes, just the smell transports me back into her kitchen and makes me miss her so much. Thanks for the comment. 😊

Many years ago my Mom prepared a “Tostada Bar” for my little daughter’s BDay party. Her beans actually brought one of the guests to tears! He said they tasted just like his Mother’s which he missed so much!
It's a staple in this white boys home
True that @truss
Oh my gosh that beagle is precious.
Separate/clean beans was my job while helping my grandmother 👵🏼 🥰
Staple for all people and race not just Hispanic. Thank you. Love your dog
As a white boy who makes his own refried beans, I fully agree! My step mom and my step dad are hispanic. My birth parents divorced and ended up remarrying (re-fried-marrying?) into hispanic families.
the puppy was hoping for a plate of beans , he was waiting patiently !🥘 🐶🤣🤪😂
Doggo says “I’m a good boy. I like beans. Gimme some beans please”. 😂
Thank you for sharing a video without making us watch you count ever bean with music that puts us to sleep.
I’ve never been much of a cook so I appreciate the lessons of the yummy basics
When we used to soak beans overnight we always used to add about a teaspoon or so of baking soda. That would help release some of the gas in the seeds making them just a bit more "burp-less" when you make food later from them.
The dog tells all. It's practically drooling.
Man there's nothing better than a homemade flour tortilla with fresh refried beans on bacon grease or chorizo honestly. As a kid growing up on these recipes and even now I'm glad to see other's who can relate to great simple recipes. ❤🤤
I'm pro corn 😅 but I understand !
This lady here is very nice ! It's relaxing just hear her voice and see the wonderful meals she creates 💯
Chicken stock! A great flavor booster.
This episode popped up in my recommendations but I've never seen your channel. While watching it I told my husband, "I know her from somewhere." I grew up in the foothills of El Dorado County and finally figured out you were my news anchor! It was your voice. So glad to find your channel and can't wait to catch up on your videos 🙂
Oh wow! That's crazy that you recognized my voice. It's been 17 years since I left KOVR in Sacramento. I'm a lot older, but also very happy just sharing simple recipes on my own time. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment.
@@marcyinspired1442 you are still as beautiful as I remember. I’ve already tried a few of your recipes and they have all turned out great. Glad you found a way to still connect with people and share what you’re passionate about. Thank you so much for sharing.
That is hilarious! I was sitting here thinking, her voice is so professional she could be on the news, 😂❤
I have learned to make a simple pot and divide it into canning jars while hot still. I do add a small amount of sea salt to help preserve it. I allow them to cool on the counter. The jars will seal themselves this way. Once at room temperature, I store them in the refrigerator. They actually keep for weeks with this method. I am able to use smaller portions this way when needed.
Great idea!!
Thanks for my refresher course. I was probably 10 years old when I first started bean’s cooking for my mom. My grandmother step by step. I’m retired and eat out quite often but I miss homemade refried. I love the choleso and beans. Thanks again.
I refry my beans with butter and mash them to the point of dryness without adding anything to them so I can spread them on a tostada then add ground beef, shredded lettuce, bits of tomato and pico de gallo.
Off camera marcy got some Hatch Chile's from the freezer and added them and did not share with anyone. 👍
🤣😂😂Does somebody know me!? Lol Be sure to watch next week. I make Borracho Beans with Hatch chile. They're SO good!🔥
Really happy to find and be sharing your channel. Thx!
Cue the applause track!
😂
@@marcyinspired1442I was just going to mention this, but you know. Lol.
They look delicious. I grew up in a large family with 12 siblings. Needless to say, we had beans almost every day in one form or another. After I was a man I discovered Great Northern Beans. I like them even better, Later in life I learned to cook them in the slow cooker. I think that is the best way to cook them with fat back and corn bread and fried potatoes. Thumbs up to your videos.
Hey, a slice of onion and your set! I call that hillbilly food, we have that a lot here in southeastern Kentucky!
I made these today, I used chicken broth in place of water to slow cook the beans, I also cooked with chorizo to add a bit of flavor, they turned out great and the best I’ve ever eaten, thank you soooo much ❤
Sounds good. Just curious, when you used the slow cooker was it set on high or low?
@@RobertJohnson-lb3qz I set it on high, cooked until the beans were soft, about 4 hours, soaked them overnight
@@billwareagle7047 Yes! Thanks Bill. I already have the chicken broth. Gonna do it ASAP.
New to your channel. When cleaning my beans I throw in the half beans. I was taught at a young age that the halfs beans is what gives that extra juices and taste.God Bless
Love your little supervisor!!
The beans look so good!
Your doggie is very cute 😍
I love that you share recipes that are easily recreated at home. Thank you!
That's encouraging. I appreciate your feedback, and the fact you are watching!😊
I'll use olive oil or chicken fat 🎉
Awwww chunky pup wants some too! Lol
Thanks for this Marcy😊 now I can complete my Mexican dinners with beans from scratch and not from canned...it always ruined the dinner for me because it wasn't 100% home made. Now I have all the necessary components to complete my authentic dinners🎉😊
That's awesome! I'm sure your family will appreciate that, as much as you do. 😋
Love beans boiled or fried. I add bacon slices sometimes an onion, a couple garlic cloves and a whole jalapeno or serrano w a slit on the side. Depending on what they're being used for but always add the bacon slices
I like to add garlic powder, salt, pepper, some onion cut up in pieces, cilantro and a piece of ham hock in it while they cook…. Swear it’s the best recipe ever!!!
The little old beagle wants some beans too 😊
O MY! You cleaned the beans by sorting them into the pot under the counter just like my Mom!!😍💕😍!!
I didn’t get the cooking gene from her and never can make them like hers😔I’m going to try your crockpot way. Thx!
That's awesome. I guess many moms teach their kids to do it that way. Hope cooking beans in the crockpot works for you.
Hi Marcy this brings me wonderful memories of my grandmother she always had refried beans & homemade tortillas & we were happy with that. Every morning she was up at five making her tortillas wonderful memories. Thank you ❤
Awe. So many shared memories in our culture. I love it!❤Thanks for watching!
I love to add onions to my beans in the second half of the cooking time. I will even add onion powder to my string beans. Onions just seem to go perfectly with any bean.
Thank you for this, because I was really wondering why there were no onions in the recipe! Now I know when to add them. Thank you!
Wow! Thank you sooooo much! I now know I've been over-thinking everything! Your advice really matters... I've been trying to get these right for 5 years since I've been to Mexico. LOL. I asked my old man (who is Mexican) many times how to make these.... and he's like "I don't know, I just eat them, I don't make them" LOL!! You're the best! :)
Too funny. Glad this video helped. This is just the basic version. You can, of course, get fancy with it, but I like keeping things simple. Thanks for watching!
I love Marcy Inspired Channel. She brings it back to home the closest possible, thanks Marcy..., !!!
Thanks you so much for such a sweet comment. I appreciate you watching.
I grew up eating rice and beans with homemade tortillas ❤️. I'm much older now. I can't have the rice or flour tortillas. I miss the old days 😢. Your beans looked great!!
An old re.cipe here in Britain is dried marrowfat peas which I treat in the same way. To make it into soup I add garlic, a little celery and carrot and either gammon or bacon. I will definitely try your chorizo recipe with a little garlic. Thank you.
Great tips on the beans. The chorizo looks right up my alley, so I will have to try with some fresh flour tortillas.
My husband tends to like the beans with chorizo more than just plain refried with cheese. Hope you like them, too. Thanks for watching!
After beans are completely cooked we make a roux with oil or bacon drippings or lard with flour. We add it to the pot and it makes the beans super creamy also. Love your cooking.
@911theanonymous what liquid do you add to your roux or do you add any at all. I see the ingredients for the roux
@@sherrywilliams409 I make the roux with bacon drippings (you can use oil or lard also). If it’s a big pot of bens I’ll use 3 tablespoons of drippings and 3 tablespoons of flour. Always use the same amount of drippings/flour. Let it cook stirring it until almost gold color then pour the roux into the pot of beans. It will thicken them and make them creamy. Make sure your beans are still simmering.
@@911theanonymous thank you!👍🏻
Thank you! I miss my grandma’s refried beans the most! She used a huge pot. Slow cooked them on the stove. Added ham hock for flavoring. Then, white rice which thickened the batch. She has passed. Born in early 1900’s. Was half Hispanic and never claimed that part of her historical heritage in Calif.
Honestly have never made these “from scratch” and appreciate you showing how easy it is!
A way I make my beans is with homemade salsa. I puree the veggies and cook the beans in that with chicken stock, then once they're done mash and refry them and cook down the liquid. The flavor is phenomenal and the texture is creamy but light from the veggies.
My son in law 💙 favor meal
Is Pork choops n nopales, n .
Red sauce w their special flavors then my
Daughter. makes Mexican
Rice to finish w her delicious
Creamy fried
Beans and cheese.
She's a great cook!!!! He ❤️ her food ❤
We all do ❤❤
Your daughter sounds like a fantastic cook. I would love to try pork chops with nopales, now!
Traditionally, cured lard is used, that's what's used in the mexican restaurants and that's how the beans get their flavor.
I am making these refried beans today. I just put my beans in the crock pot. I am so looking forward to eating them. Thank you.
Thank you for this recipe!!!
Thank you for blessing people, for blessing me .💖🙏
Ooooh!! I'm excited! This gringo will certainly try these and ENJOY FOR SURE!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
Texas Nana
I remember my mom helping my mom sort the beans, taking out the bad ones and the rocks. ❤
I love the Ever Hopeful Doggie
I grew up next to a Mexican family. This is exactly. how they made their beans !
Thank you Marcy. Can't wait to try this
I’m definitely going to try both of these ☺️ Thank you for sharing!
Your videos and recipes are the best Marcy! I've made at least a half dozen of your recipes and every one of them has been of the highest level in taste, simplicity and quality!!! Thank You for bringing these videos and recipes to us, I'm always looking forward to them!🤗
You are the answer to my prayers!!!!
It’s what I’ve been meaning to make!!
Thx
Thanks Marcy! You've given me some great ideas to up my game. I LOVE Refritos, and am always looking for new ways to prepare them.
I love the simplicity. I found this video first. I remember watching you on the news. You were beautiful then and now. Makes me miss California. Not a lot of good Mexican food that I grew up with here in NC. God Bless you. You made my day.
same in Michigan 👎
Thank you for such clear and patient speaking!
I rinse mine, then soak.
Have a wonderful day!🙌🏼🕊💐
I used to hate how gassy beans made me. Now, I SOAK them for 24 HOURS, changing the water and rinsing well about four times, about every six hours. Then, I rinse well, place them in FRESH water and cook til done without salt. ABSOLUTELY NO FLATULANCE. GUARANTEED.
If you need to speed it up your first soak can be boiling water poured over the beans. Cover and let them cool to room temp. Drain, rinse, and repeat.
Looks great!
This is most Definitely a Keeper! We Love Refried Beans! And I will definitely make my own now!! Thankyou Marcy!!!!👍🏻👍🏻
Looks so easy and delicious thank you so very much❤
I appreciate this cooking channel. Keep them coming!
I always wondered how to make these, thank you very much❤️
Adding salt in the beginning does not make them hard. In fact it adds depth to the flavor. The bean itself develops more flavor and not just the juice.
I'll never forget the first time I saw your Mom making these! I just could'nt belive that they were the same beans! I was in such awe that you could make refried beans outta beans! I thought there was so much more to it or there was a secret recipe! To this day I think of your mom every time I start smashing those beans! See, people wanna know the secret!! Ha, ha! Thanx and great job!!
Too funny! The secret is out!
Thank you. Looks delicious
Cooking beans all the time but this extra Flavors will make the great difference! Thanks!
Luscious recipe!
This you tube is awesome, and everything you said about creamy refried beans makes a hole lot of sense, I’ve been only a outdoor cook but this year I’ve been learning about kitchen cooking indoors, thanks for sharing this ❤😇👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
What a great video! Thank you
How simple and delicious looking
,
Appreciate you sharing, thanks 👍🏼
Beans are a must! And with chorizo is a bonus. They both look absolutely delicious 😋👌🏼♥️
One of my favorite comfort foods, thanks for sharing!! ❤
I almost didn't share it. But I guess, even though most people already make refried beans, they still like seeing something that reminds them of home.🥰
I never thought to add cheese or chorizo to refries but it’s a great idea…and little doggy seems to approve!
Excellent. Thank you.
I love your channel!! Thank you!!
My dog love beans. He always gets his own bowl when I am done. Beans are nutritious for dogs and humans.
Thank you for sharing...you inspired me with this video back when I was a mother and it never gets old. luv yr little doggie.
I love beans so much . 🙏
Me, too. They're an absolute staple.
Thank you for posting it, ive always used canned refried beans but id like to try to do them from scratch.
Looks yummy.
I made your Mexican Rice yesterday. It was delicious! Thank you. I'll try the beans next.
Thank you for sharing! I always wondered how the Mexican restaurants made their yummy refried beans!! Now I can make them at home ❤
I always wanted to make homemade refried beans but never knew how to exactly. Thank you for sharing! I can’t wait to try this for my family!
Wow thank you so much for showing me how to make refried beans which are my very favorite I could eat them everyday !’ I am going to make these
Thank you!! Can’t wait to try this one.
I'm happy to hear that. Thanks for watching & taking the time to comment.
Hi Marcy, I tried your Chorizo Refried Beans and the flavor was out of this world. Thanks for sharing your recipe.
Excellent. Thank you.🌟🙏
There is nothing better than a beautiful senorita sharing a Mexican recipe for refried beans....thank you Marci
Grew up on beans. Granny would cook a huge pot of beans every Saturday for the next week. Refried leftovers were the best.
Oh thank you for all the yummy recipes
A piece of fatback at the start of cooking will add great flavor. I'm not Hispanic, but my late husband was Spanish, my maternal granny was Cherokee and she always put a big piece of fatback in her pinto beans and let them cook low and slow. 👍😋
Love your dog. He looks really friendly and relaxing to be around. Oh , thanks for making the video.
Wow 😲 this is a good video, I never knew how to cooked refried beans I am glad that I watched this video 😉🥘.
Thank You So Much!
loved the part about cleaning the beans. our mom had us to that..there were lots of pebbles in beans back in the 60's!!!
I love refried beans but I didn’t know how to make them. I always just bought them in the can even though I use dried beans all the time. This makes all the difference in the world! I’ll be making them this way from now on and forgetting the canned beans. I actually have dehydrated all types of beans after soaking and cooking to have ready in less time. I’m going to rehydrate some pinto beans today and fry them up tonight! Thanks so much. In the past, I just tried to fry them without the liquid…….so they were flavorless and dry, as you can imagine.
Glad you found this video helpful. How cool that you dehydrate all types of beans. I've never tried that.
@@marcyinspired1442 . Thanks. I use beans the regular way with overnight soaking if I think ahead. But I love to dehydrate them so I can ways just throw them in soup or a casserole or burrito at the last minute. (Well. It’s more then a minute cuz you have to rehydrate them if it isn’t soup! Lol.) Dehydrate slowly…..and long so they are completely dry. Then I just store them in any glass jar. They don’t need oxygen absorbers or anything special. It’s 10 am and someone wants beans and rice tonight…..got it! 😉Northern bean soup?….right on it! Cheaper and better then can. The getting beans dehydrated takes time….but not work. Soak one-two nights, cook during the day, dehydrate that night, put in a jar. I make a few jars of different beans a couple times a year or whenever they start to get low. Give it a try! Thanks for all your videos. I’m doing your enchiladas next!
Looks banging, thanks for sharing.
This is a staple in every culture. You can tell how well people are connected to their roots by how much they eat beans.
Love the classy look, sound and style of this channel!
