hearing about the dev history kinda makes me sad. they really wanted to create something original or something that stands out, something different from persona and SMT. they did try to appeal to the older fans somehow but also to general atlus fans. but looks like none of that landed. the reviewers pretty much all said something like: "decent game, but nothing special, doesn't stand out compared to persona and SMT". if this is the reception, the project clearly failed at being a "third pillar" for atlus, it didn't manage to stand out from the crowd. in my opinion, that shows that the current atlus staff has limited creativity. it is mind blowing that the atlus of old could go from something so serious like nocturne and DDS and go on to make something so light hearted and super goofy like raidou without even trying. i dont know, it seems like atlus has lost their magic touch when it comes to originality. sure, the games are competent, they have fun gameplay built upon years and years of experience with press-turn, they've got extremely stylish UIs and good music and whatever... but this spark of creativity that the atlus of, say, 2003-2013 had seems to be not there. many of the games they created back then didnt sell well initilaly, but they were so unique and interesting that thorugh word of mouth and reputation they grew a fanbase anyway. raidou reviewed even worse than SH2 did now but the game has so much style and suave people love it anyway. same with DDS. even a game like etrian odyssey. that game is like, the only non-megaten they have made other than maken x? an extremely low budget game, tiny dev team, super risky premise (making a wizardry style first person dungeon crawler in 2007) but the game ended up becoming a really successful series in its own right with many fans. a game that really stood out from the crowd with its hardcore gameplay and weird as hell storytelling. it was super mega janky, something we don't see from atlus now, but it was original. in my opinion they need to allow younger staff to take the reigns, people who have truly weird ideas, but who are also genuinely fans of the occult and mythology, who want to create something dark and weird and fantastical. atlus needs those people. edit: totally forgot about trauma center and catherine, but those games were really original too and i wonder if atlus can repeat that kind of thing today...
I think they need to return to more artistic design, it seems that they are really fixated on what fans want and what they think would be well received.
Big ups for criticizing the game where it is deserved and not praising that this is okay. At least you mentioned most of the annoyances the game has that most reviewers are ignoring. it's been some hours that I listened to this, so I'm not sure if you actually mentioned this part during the review or if you thought about it while playing the game. You said that you have 200ish hours afterall. I know this is a review, and you wouldn't be too critical on what has been cut from the game, but what do you think about the whole opening scene that was also promoted in their very 1st release trailer when SH2 was announced? You know, the big hand thing (Old One) that never appeared in the game with Iron Mask standing here, full cutscenes of how all the party members died, seeing the villains standing next to each other, Ringo going into a emotional state on her knees as if something bad happened, like she lost all her party members, etc. I know it's common for companies to promote games like this by having story content that never makes an appearance in the game that is shown in the opening movie. Atlus is well known for doing this. When I saw those scenes, I was like, Okay...everyone is killed off and we're at the point where you kill Iron Mask and Figue goes into an emotional state by using Soul Hack on him. At this point, I expect Figue to turn against Ringo's team in some sort of way, uses Soul Hack on everyone that you have killed and the story plot would continue from there. Instead, it was all rushed and here are the credits moment. Also what's up with the ending choices and Moon/Sun keys? All it did was, you fight X amount of Dominions, based on your choices...talk about lackluster ending build up. Just curious if you actually thought about this part while playing the game as it was shown in the opening trailer.
I take it all to be cut content, I'm excited for the book I'm hopeful it has info about it. The keys thing really feels like an ending requirement thing that ended up being cut. I actually just think the reveal stuff might've been stuff that just existed in earlier drafts since we already have confirmation Ringo wasn't initially the protag, that there was some changes made and that they had trouble figuring this one out
I was able to stretch it to 90 hours with the dlc but I'm a completionist, I refuse to stop playing a game until everything is done or it's so frustrating it's not worth the headache, but this game is easy to 100%, well at least when compared to persona 5 royal
I can appreciate they designed this as more of an entry point. It’s a pretty lean game and not too hard, so despite its problems, I think I could recommend to someone who might not wanna spend 70-100+ hours on other games right away. Hopefully they could iron out these problems moving forward. I’m glad I waited 4 months to play this because they fixed some issues such as Ringo’s movement speed.
Though I like your history videos most of all, hearing your opinions like this is also great! As for Soul Hackers 2, I pre-ordered it and intend to start playing tonight. Whether or not it's as good as I hoped it would be, I wanted to support the choices I did like such as having more adult protagonists and bringing back more titles than just SMT and Persona. If this marks the first baby steps towards feeling more comfortable taking risks on stories like Catherine and DDS again, I'll be happy. And, if things continue to not improve, well, at least I've still got my copy of Soul Hackers on 3DS.

@@Larrue while I do play the more popular RPGs, I'm also a massive fan of niche and hidden gems, there are hundreds of AA and indie RPGs that very few ppl know about but are still imo some of the best RPGs ever made
@@Larrue I am your audience, just because Im critical and don't agree with everything you say doesn't mean I'm not a part of your audience, I actually enjoy most of your videos
@@mathewhosier9739 I didn't know you were based on the other comment you left
"Well I'd hope you spend more than half the game in dungeons, considering that's where you know, you play the game, I swear you weebs need to start separating games from anime, go watch an anime if all you want is story, don't ruin the most important part of gaming, you know, the gameplay"
Made me think you don't watch my content or just misunderstood the point I was making or both
@@Larrue so just because I hate weebs doesn't mean I can't enjoy RPGs and RUclips videos about RPGs, I just think there are far too many games based on or similar to anime, I just don't want my favorite genre watered down by games with bad gameplay because the developers focus too much on story because the weeb fan base wants video to be more like the horrible anime they watch
Soul hackers 2 > nocturne lol
I'm glad you're enjoying soul hackers 2, like I said in the video I think a lot of people will consider it very good
@@Larrue I think everything you said in the video was pretty accurate man I just don’t like smt3 that much lol 👍
Oh, yeah nocturne isn't for everyone
Stop the cap

You didn't understand the point of that, I was saying the dungeon design made the game worse because the dungeons were barren, had only two dungeon elements and they all looked the same.
The criticism wasn't "I hate dungeons" it was "I wish these dungeons were good and nice to look at".
the phrase youre looking for is "not for me"
Since the review is my opinion, I figured that was a given
@@Larrue yeah just feel like saying "not for me" is a bit more eloquent than what you were saying at the end of the video where you were tryna say you didnt enjoy it but others would
Is the official pronunciation 'fig' or 'figu'? Most videos I see about the game pronounce it as 'fig', but it is pronounced figu in the Japanese trailers lol
figu is just how you pronounce the word fig in japanese, but in english it's fig
Japanese language doesn't end their pronunciation of words with consonants except for "n".
