@@blaiseclapper787 Well.... not anymore. It was a bit of a dated slide even at the time, but you're either rewriting history to support your argument, or you're just not aware that this was far more common than you think and you don't care to do a millisecond of fact checking. The social conscience of the play was definitely moving on, but I dare remind you Utley was called safe, in part because, yes, that was a baseball play.

@@elijahpfeifer6811it was legal at the time to slide on the edge of the basepath, and to slide past the bag. In the 80s and 90s dudes would basically tackle to break up a double play. The goal was never to injure but to disrupt. It was a lot more physical, kinda like how basketball was during that same period.
Think of breaking up the double play as the handchecking of basketball. It used to be legal to smack a players hand as they are shooting or dunking or going for a layup, and today that would be a shooting foul. In both cases it was uninforced until something occurred which forced a clearly defined rule that bans it. For baseball it was the utley slide.

Yeah, that was bad form on Chase. tbf to him though, part of it is a personality thing. Back when he was on the Phillies, players like Victorino, Howard, and especially Jimmy Rollins would endlessly mock and tease Utley for being a robot.
You still gotta show more remorse than he did. For a player without a track record, in a high tense situation, when Tejada didn't do himself any favors with his choice of positioning, added in with the rule finally getting changed (Say what you want about Utley, but the fact that that was legal speaks WAY louder to me), the community could've forgiven Utley more then they did. But it's worth remembering everyone's range of emotions is different, and Utley's, according to teammates, is fairly low.
(EDIT: Utley does have somewhat of a history, by no means has he never slid to break up DP's before, I meant it was never to an egregious level, particularly as a middle infielder who has to deal with it himself, mb that was poor phrasing)

"People can't tell the difference." It wasn't him playing hard. It was him playing dirty. He slid late af to break up the play, not even aiming for the bag. He's not remorseful for ending his career. And just because he grew up watching older baseball doesn't mean he should continue the trend. Crowds don't beat up umps anymore so lets leave the, "Oh, baseball has changed," bs at the door.
