That right there is what makes Dave great. I had the same reaction as you. They opened with that bit about the banjo, and he used it 10 minutes in the most PERFECT moment possible. Is that not impeccable timing or what?

This was really remarkable television - thanks so much for sharing this! It reminds me of that time that Dave showed up for Howard's birthday - they really do mesh very well!
The second half of this interview, the part about friendship, is amazing. I feel like this is the first time that I've seen Dave truly open up. Here's the thing: I understand. I'm the same way. I have trouble making close friendships, because I feel I have to keep everyone at arm's length to protect myself. It's so ingrained that it may as well be instinct at this point. For many years, I've loved Dave. I thought it was because he is the type of comedian I most respect. He's truly rebellious, and he's got guts. But maybe this is the real reason. Maybe I just relate to him. Every comedian performs because there is a hole he or she is looking to fill. I think it's important to remember that all good comedy comes from pain.
that's why I adore Norm's last appearance and his unexpectedly getting choked up at the end, dropping the battle armor finally to tell Dave he loved him. Because Norm is poetically tragic also yet another loner comedian who has many friends whom he's kept at arms length himself. It's funny, not haha, but ironic funny how all these comedic personalities found each other and have the same similar flawed pathology (still refer to Norm in present tense). I get it though. I have one friend who is just like me and Dave and Howard where after 15 minutes at a get together, we're already planning our exit strategy. So he and I pioneered the 15 minute get togethers. It saved our friendship with one another. And keeps us tethered to the world a little bit more longer even though we're inevitably slipping off the planet gradually regardless while dissolving like space particles just left to evaporate as nothing but scattered cosmic ash disappearing into the mists of time...

And that he did, and now was blown away that he was actually getting to know his idol in person.
No, Rickles knew Howard was a phony and gave him the treatment normies are given. That's how he weeded people out. Stern was always jealous of John Stamos' relationship with Rickles and he was probably set up.
So, don’t really know the actually motivation. While I'm not sure if anyone who did not follow pop culture at the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21st centuries will get this segment, it is a classic. Unlikely buds, totally savvy to the mass media "weasels" who wrote the big checks for them. Thank you LETTERMAN for keeping us howling!
I’m sure that Dave’s opinion of Brad Grey came from the tumultuous legal battle between Garry Shandling and Grey. Most people say that Grey ripped off Shandling to such a degree that it sent Garry into self imposed creative isolation. He was pretty much done with Hollywood after that. Sadly Shandling died much too young and Grey died not long after.

Finally! Thank god, this interview is one of my favorites. Bless the moderators of this channel!
8:13 for the Jay Leno rant.
You sir are a gentleman and a scholar all I cared about was the title
Thank you
Thank you
You’re the real MVP.
I would love to see Howard Stern and Graham Norton together. Such different styles and yet they’re the two best interviewers around and share the rare ability of being able to occupy either side of the interview.
Two matching magnet poles!
Graham Norton is completely insufferable
@@4rumani He would be the first to agree with you.
@@4rumaniyou spelled Howard stern wrong. Graham is a lot more comedically talented and a better interviewer without having to be crude
SO great. I remember watching this live. Love You, Dave & Howard!
I love how honest Howard Stern is, it’s like the opposite of so much of super smiley Hollywood, ahhh…honesty.
Fantastic! The riffing was off the charts, including the "My Way" ending!!
When Howard says, it could have been you, Dave..classic Howard honesty.
How did I miss this when it initially aired?! This was such a lovely back and forth! They both knew they were in a fun conversational pocket that made for good TV and went with it. Stellar! :)
I think one if the best conversations ever! And a great twist ending!
Frank Greene's face (on trumpet) when Howard ask him about the man... "Why you hasslin' me??"
You should give more background on this because it's a dark story.
Garry Shandling was quite a bit ahead of his time.
Then he made the Larry Sanders Show which was superb on many levels.
@@howard5992 His first show was better
Howard goes from "This is why I resent you" to slow dancing to My Way with Dave. Amazing
I was not expecting to watch this all the way through, laughing as much as I did. Thank you. This was a rollercoaster.
20 plus minutes, minimal cuts and live. Much respect
Contemporary Howard Stern is so disappointing compared to his former self.
So much for sticking it to the man.
Howard and Dave always played off each other so well
"I mean what is with the BANJO?? Everyone HATES it!!!" LOL I was rolling.
It's like he gave a voice to my subconscious gossip.
They say "the commonality in all of your failed relationships is you". With Letterman, O'Brien and Farrell it says a lot about Jay
This is like a podcast episode, but on another level
I love how every time Stern is on. Dave bumps commercial breaks and gets the ratings boost.
Jeeeeez, the best talk show talking “inside baseball”. Dave was the greatest!! What commercial break?!?! 😂
WAS LOOKING FOR THAT INTERVIEW FOR AGES! Watched it like 30 times back in 2013😂
same lol
No script necessary, just two brilliantly funny guys. That was great!
This was an amazing interview. I absolutely loved it! THIS is good late night television. The guys nowadays need to step up their game.
The only other people who can take over an interview for the entire segment without being asked a single question like Howard Stern are Robin Williams and Kevin Smith.
You only ask Mark Hamill one question. BOOM! Three hours go by, and he finally answers the question with context
and the late Norm Macdonald
he asked him multiple questions lol.
Jonathan Winters
What a masterclass between quick witted conversationalist. You can see the attempts at both to control the narrative and each other's skill to redirect.
Dave: “You need a banjo.” LOL
Letterman and Howard Stern are legends…I remember their 9/11 segments…Stern live and Letterman’s after the event…both just great at their individual talents; radio and television!!!
These were the great old days, loved this.
What an interview/appearance! Great exchange from 2 of the absolute best. Great stuff - not sure I EVER saw this.
Many great moments were guests who were on equal footing with Dave, and Howard was always that. In fact, early Leno appearances were the same. Absolute, pure entertainment. ❤
What an honest, genuine conversation between two hard working men.
Foiled!!! Howard said we're not going to commercial break, and then RUclips goes to commercial anyway!!! 😂😂
Not when you pay for premium. What are you doing with your life? Watching commercials on youtube? Tragic.
What a sad brag.@@briansnow2001
This was great!!!! The camaraderie these two share is so entertaining. I miss Dave...
Best interview for me.
Commenting while I'm watching. This is a GREAT interview. These men at the top of their careers reflecting on them as, what after, this interview became their decline. Really insightful for all of us watching to learn and live from.
Loved this interview.
And the band with the music bit at the end. Great TV
This entire thing was so hilarious. Bravo gentleman!
