The "Fall of Shady Sands" might just mean that that's when the NCR changed their capitol. The billboard does call it the "first capital of the NCR". The survivors in Vault 4 were kinda unhinged and treated Shady Sands like it was this holy place so them seeing the year the NCR changed capitols as "the fall" kinda makes sense.
EDIT: TODD HOWARD CONFIRMS IN IGN INTERVIEW THAT THE NCR IS STILL AROUND:
I'm curious how you guys see the NCR as it stands now. Is it demolished or is it kind of more like the Minutemen where it's just fractured?
Howard: One of the takes that we always have is to approach things very locally when we're doing Fallout. We're careful about saying what's going on in other parts of the world. And we always take this view of, communication is difficult. And look, if you look at the background, the NCR is a wide-ranging sort of organization and group across not just California, but other places. So the show focuses on this period of time and this group here, and that's what we can say right now. But I don't think you've heard the last of the NCR.

With every of the Fallout games, there was always multiple choices and endings so how can you maintain a serious lore, it's impossible. Sometimes Bethesda choose a canon but they always change places and dates for the next ones so they can accomodate some player choices.

This isn’t a complaint, more of a genuine question. As someone who thoroughly enjoys and understands Fallout’s lore and timeline. Especially within New Vegas. I’m just curious how they plan on this being the case. We get a lot of information, and I mean A LOT, within New Vegas on Shady Sands, the NCR and California as a whole. We get a lot. So if we’re talking within a few years of the events of Fallout New Vegas, I’m just curious what their idea is for how this happened. Nukes blowing up the cradle of arguably one of the most important factions within Fallout lore is not some small thing. That’s a massive event and nukes are not that common or easy to utilize within the setting. I’m simply curious how they plan on making that through line between New Vegas and all of the information we have there, and the show. That’s a small gap of time and a lot of events that need to unfold just right to make sense. I’m not saying this is awful unforgivable heresy writing. Just that I don’t think it was a smart move for the future of the lore and consequences of previous lore given the extensive content the NCR and Shady Sands provides. Just seems like a bit of a short sighted move is all, and I’m curious how they plan on bandaging that timeline, or if they’ll ignore it and kinda just give us an ambiguous three year gap and say “just trust me bro”. All I’m saying is, just because you can fudge dates and write a major event, doesn’t mean you should.

Are we sure that the city behind Shady Sands crater is LA. The Shady Sands skyline looks smaller to me than the one we see from the observatory, also if I remember correctly there were no hills around shady sand in the show, at least that we see like we do in the Boneyard later. The skyline could be a Fresno, that city is a lot closer to were Shady Sands was in the first Fallout games and we don't know much about Fresno since the divergence in the Fallout timeline. Fresno could've become a major industrial hub in the Fallout timeline especially being closer to the original Brotherhood base which was a big pre war US military Base. We also don't know that the NCR is completely gone I imagine that when the nuke went off that it left local NCR in total chaos, with the reemergence of the BOS in southern California we can imagine they probably kicked the NCR when they were down and kicked them out of Southern California and became the dominant power there. The NCR could still be strong in Northern California though with cities like New Reno, Redding, San Francisco and Vault City being most likely untouched. This makes sense in the context of the show because if the wasteland knew the NCR completely collapsed then I don't think you would have people claiming to be the President or creating Head Quarters for the NCR, however if they knew the NCR was just pushed back then and are looking to reclaim there southern territory then it would make sense for these people to claim to be the legitimate NCR government in hopes to be recognized as such when the NCR returns. Also if the NCR completely collapsed why don't we see any real micro states in the show, the NCR had a large standing army with actual military doctrine. You're telling me that if the government completely collapsed that at least some divisions would create relatively safe areas around some major towns. However if the NCR pulled back its army completely out of SoCal with the idea of retaking it it would make sense that we see no remnants of the NCR army besides the father and son with there Nevada Ranger gear. I think season 2 well see Lucy and the Ghoul mess around in New Vegas while Maximus and the Brotherhood will come into conflict with the NCR returning to SoCal for a second NCR Brotherhood war.

If the intention was to imply the nuke is the fall of shady sands then they would just say 'shady sands nukes/deatroyed/bombed'.

I just thought the evidence presented to us was vague and we needed exactly this confirmation. Even if SS was destroyed in 2277 I would’ve been fine with it, but it would need to be explained a little. Happy with the result though!

im pretty objective (3 was my first big boy game that i got around my 10th birthday) and I soon moved onto vegas. I appreciate 3 and like the game even with its flaws (forcing you to side with the brotherhood/terrible enclave writing) the world was also great. That being said, New vegas is ultimately a better story with better writing in a much harder setting (a desolate desert compared to DC). The brotherhood have no place out west not in the capacity the show is showing them in. There is no justification of that aside from Bethesda loving the brotherhood just like they loved turning super mutants into brainless zombies. How did vegas turn to crap so quickly? there better be a good explanation. With bethesda's current writing trajectory tho the brotherhood will just become this elite level organization running the entire country. I just hope house is ok (my favorite character by far) and I think he presents so many great story opportunities. They could've made starfield the same universe as fallout thanks to house wanting humanity to go to the stars (I think that was a huge missed opportunity even tho starfield sucks). That being said ill just hope for the best and hope obsidian is allowed to make another game since bethesda is tied up for the next several years (would be a win win and smart move by Microsoft).

It has nothing to do with being an elitist or not, they just did an awful job of conveying information in that one particular scene and it led people to some (justifiable) concerns. The fact that we didn't have solid ages for the characters meant people had to resort to things like googling the actors' ages to guesstimate, which didn't look good for the timeline when people found out Maximus' actor is in his mid-30s.
Also, "they can dig themselves out of it later" is exactly the problem here lol, that's a piss poor way to run a show/franchise. I say all of this as somebody that's actually a huge fan of the show. The writing is mostly pretty tight throughout the show, but between this and the possibility of Vault-Tec starting the war, they decided to be as vague as humanly possible about the two literal biggest plot points in the series (and possibly the franchise). I get that the idea in a visual medium is to show, not tell, but they didn't really do either for those two plot points and that's going to lead to a lot of wild interpretations.

I don't get why Matty's being so smug here, this isn't the "win" he thinks it is. At best, the showrunners fucked it up slightly and didn't have it clarified when Shady Sands fell and was nuked. Ok, that's acceptable in a vacuum. But how're we explaining that the NCR's nowhere to be found when they're the biggest faction on the west coast and the show takes place directly inside their territory? I saw something from someone on Reddit suggesting that the show "implies that the NCR has splintered with multiple factions fighting for the title of NCR," but I don't recall that in the slightest. And if that is the case, ok... Why the fuck didn't we get a simple statement in the show from a character saying, "The NCR isn't exactly a thing anymore, they've splintered into different factions fighting for power." They didn't even have to explain and go into detail, that can be in Season 2, but we got nothing but confusion at best. And frankly, I don't really trust Bethesda and the writers to splinter the NCR and do it justice.
And for the umpteenth time, the crying about the infighting between Bethesda sycophants, haters, New Vegas lovers, old fans, etc. is infinitely bigger than the actual infighting. And let's be honest, Bethesda's wildly dropped the ball over the last decade across the board, including with not having Obsidian make another Fallout game back after New Vegas. People criticizing Bethesda and not trusting them isn't only justifiable, it'd be wrong not to do so.

Exactly. Shady Sands not only was destroyed, it changed locations. I keep thinking how there's been a move on Bethesda's part to simplify (see how I didn't say "dumb down"?) games. The retcon (and it still feels like one) feels like grasping at straws. "Oops! Fans are in arms! Quick, say something! Um ... Shady Sands fell *right after New Vegas!* Yeah! That's what happened. ANd it moved, too. Somehow. And the nearly million living under NCR just disappeared into the wastes with no attempts at a real government, and um, um, um ... you believe me don't you? My name's Todd!" Seriously, if they wanted to destroy it and move Shady Sands to L.A. for story purposes, wouldn't it have been smarter to say call it "New Shady Sands" and then the story couild be it was destroyed X years after they moved ... what a shame! Essentially, that took 1 minute to come up with a slightly more plausible story.
