  • While season 2 will bring us all the answers we seek, much of the Fallout community is in disarray following the finale of Fallout's TV show. I find myself not only very excited for what's to come, but also think Bethesda hasn't done anything as damaging as the internet suggests yet.

My theory is that Vault Tec is capable of detonating nukes underground, which would be the only way to cause craters like that. And because the nuke in the very beginning moves very slow and seems to rip through the ground, unlike the 3 that immediately follow, only minutes later I may add.
So I'm thinking Vault Tec also wanted to detonate THEIR nuke specifically. So maybe other nukes were already on their way, so Vault Tec had to pull the trigger early.

Indeed, there's a lot of evidence (such as Mr House's unpreparedness as you pointed out, and unfinished vaults) that suggests that it wasn't them.

Spoiler: One thing that really bothered me was how the Ghoul on the last episode easily executed a Brotherhood Knight in Power Armor with a single shot. He knew about a weak point in the chest plate. Yet, at the beginning of the show, when Maximus was in a Power Armor Suit, the same Ghoul couldn't slay him and ended up in a prolonged fight. This inconsistency makes little sense, because if the Ghoul knew about the weak spot, he could have easily defeated Maximus as well.

I still don't think Vault Tec took the first shot with the nukes, despite what the show indicates. Tim Cain said Chinese fired first, and I am sticking with that.
Did Barb float the idea of VT instigating in order to secure their goal, yes. However, her whole personal drive and arc was acquiring a position that meant her family would be safe when the end came. There is no way she would let Janey be off working a party with Coop when she knew the bombs were dropping. She may be cold as ice for suggesting it, but she's a clearly loving and caring mother. Janey at the least would be in a safe place when the bombs dropped.
Most likely, Vault Tec had that idea on the table, but the Chinese still got the jump on them. This took VT by surprise, explaining the above situation (also making sense as to why they still had so many incomplete vaults). It upset House's predictions, allowing the NV story with the platinum chip to take place. Once China instigated, the US responded and VT and anyone else with a nuke got in on the action amidst the chaos.

Edit: Let me give you something to think about regarding Mr House and the Board Meeting. That meeting happens at the LA Vault Tec HQ. We know from Fallout 3 that Vault Tec moves their HQ to Bethesda Maryland before the bombs drop in 2077. Given that information, I believe the Pre-war segments we are seeing (minus the opening sequence obviously) are happening years before the bombs. I've not been able to find a year referenced during those scenes... so that meeting could have happened in 2075 or earlier. If you find a year on the HQ move please let me know.
One correction, Sorrell was not NCR. He named himself President of "The Govermint", because there was no one to argue against it. There was nothing in those scenes that even remotely implied that they were NCR.

My biggest gripe with the show is how they treat the wasteland over 200 years after the bombs/after NCR has collapsed. There’s no warring states or remnants of the NCR culture. No one knows how to make new clothes or build new things. Everyone lives in shanty towns or pre-war housing. Which is how the fallout world looks under Bethesda now.
I’m of the mindset that it’s cool to see the wasteland go from a more Mad Max/MacGyvered aesthetic to sort of resembling a functional society again.
I understand some people don’t like that, but my question is, why not just set it closer to after the Great War? The need to constantly reset the wasteland, whether it be tunnelers or a vault tec bomb feels frivolous to me. Otherwise I enjoyed the show and have accepted that this is how fallout will be now.

I’d like to add that I’m fine with them doing an NCR collapse story. I just wish it would have been more like a Civil War instead. The NCR is written to be an analog of pre-war United States. It’s going through a lot of the same struggles: you’ve got over expansion, egregious taxes on a population that is not benefiting from government spending, corruption in government from rich individuals like the brahmin barons, and warhawkish politicians.
I think that’s really interesting and I want the writers to play around with that. Having the nuke just feels cheap to me. I guess it feels like a lot of cool story lines now can’t be told but maybe season two will change my mind in a couple years.

I just hope they provide an explanation that makes sense. I still don't see how a dormant Vault Tec management Vault could organise the delivery of a nuke to shady sands. Do they have launch codes to remaining Silos? Where did the nuke come from? How many do they have? Why not nuke the rest of the NCR?
That last bit is something I'm worried about. It's clear Bethesda wants to "reset" the west coast and level the playing field by getting rid of the NCR, which is annoying but I've made my peace with it. But I fear that they think nuking Shady Sands is a good enough reason for the NCR to disappear, and it's not because that was just one of many cities in the NCR. NCR has over 700,000 people, SS had roughly 35,000 people and their army was not stationed there. So realistically the NCR should still have a huge presence but.... they just don't? And now the Brotherhood who were in hiding are now the only major presence that we see and the NCR aren't around to challenge them? The Brotherhood and NCR should be at full scale war at this point.
Time will tell if we see that they still exist in a big way, but it feels like Bethesda wanted to get rid of them but forgot that they're a nation spanning the entire west coast, not just one city.
If they show in season 2 that the NCR is still around in a big way and that the Brotherhood and NCR have actually been at war this whole time, and that's why both factions were fighting to get the head, then that will actually be pretty cool because an NCR/Brotherhood war is a good way to link west coast and east coast.

Hear me out! The key to the dates is the age of Lucy! There is a specific line in episode five minute 18:05, where Lucy is describing what it was like to look up at the sun with her mother. Lucy stated that she was four years old when she was looking up at the sun with her mother, you can see her in episode 8 minute 30:05. Now if Lucy is 18 years old when she leaves the vault, this is assuming that she reaches legal age to get married, that would mean the bombs fell on Shady Sands 14 years prior to her leaving the vault. This would make the year 2282.

At 38:32 you get a clear shot of Sherriff Troy’s badge, and it has no identifying marks and looks like it’s made of scrap or was heavily worn. Nothing about this indicates they are “NCR remnants”, if anything it makes the NCR seem less cohesive since there are parallel systems of governance operating within Southern California.

I get why people think it's a retcon. It definitely looked like one to me as well, but after thinking about it further, I don't think they meant to imply it was nuked in 2077. I believe that was the start of the decline which led to the eventual nuking of Shady Sands. I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out the Brotherhood of Steel had a hand in it as well. Why else would Maximus immediately run into a Knight during the event? I suppose they could have been scavenging, but somehow it feels nefarious to me. Plus he wants to hurt the people who hurt him and the Brotherhood being responsible would be an interesting twist.
Speaking of the Brotherhood, I really want to know what their deal is. I had assumed the west would have built the airship from blueprints supplied by the east coast, but their reaction to its arrival would suggest it was built and launched by the east coast who sent reinforcements out west. Sadly the Brotherhood's POV in the show is from Maximus' POV and so we don't get any real interactions between the arriving Brotherhood soldiers and those led by Elder Quintus. Despite Fallout 4 establishing the west coast as having recognized Arthur Maxson's authority, Quintus wasn't pleased with how the Brotherhood was being run and has his own ambitions. I really hope this is explored further in another season.
I hope this show does get more seasons because it was surprisingly good. I hope we can also get more of the crazier stuff from Fallout in the series. They're diving into Vault-Tec and corporate conspiracy, so maybe we'll see how they involved alien technology into there plans. I wouldn't mind seeing them explore the Zetans further. Perhaps a Lovecraftian plot line involving Jack Cabot finding his lost city in the Mojave? Finally I would like to see the introduction of the Midwestern Brotherhood someday. Their game is technically non-canon, but their existence is still teased. This show could be the perfect place to reintroduce them back into canon.

Since the events of Fallout: New Vegas and the Fallout TV show take place 15 years apart, it's safe to say that OF COURSE New Vegas isn't all lit up. However, my theories regarding the ending of episode 8 are:
    1. Hank McLean traveled to New Vegas/the Mojave in order to seek out Robert House, assuming the showrunners choose the "Mr. House" ending to Fallout: New Vegas. It would explain the NCR vertibird and downed Securitrons outside of the perimeter of The Strip; New Vegas went to war with the NCR, in an attempt to drive them out of the Mojave.
    2. Hank McLean traveled to New Vegas in order to seek out The Courier, who is still alive and controls The Strip, assuming the showrunners choose the "Independent New Vegas" ending. It would explain why New Vegas is not as lively as it once was, as anarchy ruled the streets.

I think they smacked it out of the park. Inconsistencies are all over the games. Jet comes to mind. I don't care if they got a date wrong. Making TV is hard. The show feels as good as any of the games. Everybody's going nuts over the parent/child story line without taking into account what it would be like living in the Wasteland. The strongest connections children have is with the people that care for them. Often ending in tragic death. Waring factions, drugged crazed murderers and killer monsters are everywhere. Everything is deadly and poisonous. No internet or TV to distract you. It seems like relationships would drive thousands to have adventures of some kind. Bethesda does the "Prisoner" thing in Elder Scrolls and the "Coming of Age" thing in Fallout. How many ways can you make a hero? Who knows what Microsoft will do but I do know that there's a massive amount of earning potential so lets see where it goes.

the parent child story works way better in the show than it does in the games yeah. think it’s too personal a hook for an rpg story, raises the stakes too high for the character when the player has little actual reason to care beyond being told. but tv shows aren’t rpgs, works good for just a story being told.
also closing it out with mentioning the earning potential is pretty funny. baffling, but funny.

I think Rose took her kids just to get away from Hank & the vault, then settled in Shady Sands because she became close (probably romantically) to Moldaver. Moldaver may have been in the process of restarting up her cold fusion tech, and Hank saw that as a threat.

So canonically it was China, and for now I'm taking the Vault-Tec scene as them making plans to drop the first bomb but getting beat to it by China (which is why House wasn't ready), and also a confirmation that they had access to nukes to allow for the destruction of Shady Sands and to keep them an ongoing threat.

Its fine having a Canon ending for a 15 years old game IMO.

They literally have done it 1,2 and 3

@@trystan1352 Agreed. When you play Fallout 2, there is a Canon ending decision made for Fallout 1. When Fallout New Vegas came out, if sorta picked a Canon ending for for Fallout 2. Fallout 4 basically picked a Canon ending for Fallout 3. New Vegas 2, if we get one, would have to make a Canon ending for Fallout New Vegas. Perhaps the show will be a bridge from New Vegas to a New Vegas 2, since it is canonical.

My problem with this date and lore issue... is that it's all anyone is talking about. Rather than being excited about how the TV show extends the story... we're all left wondering "did they change something???"

Bro meat riding i get it bro you love the franchise but come on man they messed with the lore in huge ways more so than any game in my opinion they absolutely retconned a ton gave definite amswers to previously unanswered questions like who started the war? Is the enclave still around after Fallout 3? Now there are plot holes if Vault tec is wiping out the competition why are the brotherhood and enclave still kicking. How is making the endings canon a better result for the series its so much more interesting when we dont know things the world ended their shouldnt be any stability no clear cuts of whats happening it just puts the world into a smaller box vastly more uninteresting but whatever fallouts been dead for a while just like Bethesda

This guy Matty said this in his last video about the Enclave coming back to Fallout 4 -
""although I think they're most known for their presence in Fallout 2 and the hilarious encounter you can have over over the phone with uh certain Sergeant but I do think of Fallout 3 especially I see the Tesla Cannon I see the XO2 power armor immediately I think of Fallout 3
so many memories baked in there I adore The Enclave they're probably my favorite faction in all of Fallout. I just think anytime
they're involved it is sends the storyline to Greatness"
      ---
So he just likes to see the Enclave back - because "they elevate the game to greatness!", without understanding the lore.
Matty's takes are extremely shallow most of the time.
