    I'm currently trying a full set of these irons.
    The thing I find is that the swing for the longer clubs (out to 4 iron) is the same as for the short irons. They fiddle with loft and face construction to make up the difference in length for the long irons.
    The 4 iron is as easy to hit as the pitching wedge.
    I like 'em.

    I am 74 years of age and typically shoot in the high 80's. These are the best irons I have ever used. I used to struggle with not chunking my irons, these clubs for some reason eliminated that problem for me.

    I bought the F7 One Length Irons last year and love them. It was hard getting used to the "lower clubs" 9 iron - GW, but easy to get used to the "Longer Irons". These are great for your shorter golfers as well. I am only 5'6", so when I owned the Standard length Irons I was not confident with anything past a 7 iron. These clubs changed that for me! I honestly believe the one length clubs are for everyone. Maybe for the better players buying the forged set would be a better choice, but the whole concept behind the one length i believe is great for golf. 1 setup no matter what club really makes the game easier to play which I believe is something we all can appreciate!

    I had the F7 One Lengths all last season. Great clubs and easy to use and play. However, having used Game Golf with them I found exactly what this short test has shown. My distance variables with all the irons were massive. Front to back dispersion was easily 3 clubs worth. Have switched to Mizuno 919 Forged for this coming season - partly down to you James!!

    I play pinhawk one length and love them. It takes time to get use to them and trust them. Especially with the high end and the low end, you have to trust that they will do what are made to do. I liked the pinhawk irons better than the cobras because of the lofts are not as strong.

  • @3dr1ch
    @3dr1ch 5 лет назад +8

    With the jacked lofts on these clubs, those who struggle with the 5/6 irons (that are really 4/5 irons), might be better stopping at 6 and swapping out for hybrids.
    They even do one length if you were really bought in to the concept.
    People need to start thinking of lofts rather than just stamped numbers.
    Without a higher club head speed, some might struggle to get the launch required for one length long irons - hell, even Peter Finch does!!

    • @sharkhark
      @sharkhark 5 лет назад +1

      Except that in my normal set of irons I can't hit my 5 iron well and yet with a demo day of this 5 iron I could hit it well. It's more how you hit it rather than lofts I can't get my 5 iron more than 165 to 170 and spray it a bit despite being a 6 hdcp. But the cobra went 180 and I found it descended sharply so despite low spin it landed rather soft. I'm considering a set

    • @3dr1ch
      @3dr1ch 5 лет назад

      sharkhark I’m pleased it works for you - I was very tempted by one length myself before getting my P760’s, but I’m afraid it is just all about loft.
      Even the new breed of hollow headed clubs go the same distance with equal loft, they just get there with different trajectory (and consistency).
      My point was that if you can’t get the desired launch from the lower lofted irons (regardless of the number it’s stamped with), then hybrids are an option.
      Merry Christmas

      @@3dr1ch I agree with you Ed. Low loft and lower swing speed meant that my SL irons 5,6 ( read 4&5 in truer loft terms) were getting inconsistent gapping. On a good strike I got great distances with the 5 iron at 22.5 degree, but I found it varied too much. Yes I was better hitting that SL 5 iron than I was with a conventional long iron at 22 degrees, but still inconsistent. I moved to Hybrids for the 160 m shot ( used to b the 5 iron) but again be aware that the SL hybrids don't carry as far as the conventional shaft length hybrids. I use a 19 Cobra F9 ( not a 22) to get the 160 m distance, and you need to hit them further back in your stance to make them fly higher ( one ball back from centre). I replaced the 6 iron with an old Cobra F7 hybrid ( 25 degree) for a 145 m shot.

    I found that all my yardages were more consistent with one length. As I strike the middle of the face more often. I think your test is a little unfair as the player needs more swings to become accustomed to hitting 7 irons. People still move ball position based on the loft, I believe this should be left at 7 iron always, unless your trying a speciality shot. I'm 8hcp.

      My strokes due to Mis-hits have all but disappeared given ball position consistency. Shave 10-12 strokes per round. My distances are more reliable also which means far fewer short/long approach or par 3 tee shots. I have noticed less spin on my 5/6 irons as they roll further so I usually play the run on the longer approach shots and will take a little off my swing if the distance is on the shorter end of my 5/6 iron distance to account for lower spin and less stoppage (term?) on my shot. I also noticed I can much more consistently play a controlled draw whereas prior it was a guess as to whether I would go straight or draw when trying g to draw the ball.

      @@PaulGPhotography I still used specific lofted specialty wedges 52*, 56*, 60* albeit they’re cobra one lengths which don’t come in the standard set for these awkward length shots. Ideally I’ll plan my hole to avoid these distances and like to leave myself my gap or pitching wedge 110, 90 yds respectively for my approach.

  • @jacksonjohnd

    I have the F8 one length clubs with a modification. During my fitting we changed the club's to a three-length set. My 6, 7, and 8 irons play at the 7-iron length. My 4 and 5 irons play 1/2 inch longer at an 6-iron length. This helps generate little more clubhead speed which produces a higher ball flight and a better distance to fit in my gapping. My 9, PW, and Gap play a half inch shorter at an 8-iron length. This helped to keep the ball from going to high which has given me better control. I play the 7-iron at 175 yards and have a 10-yard gap between all my irons and PW. Playing my clubs like this has helped my game tremendously. I only have to make a minor set-up adjustment between the different length clubs. I also play a standard SW and 60 degree. The only change I would make is to probably go to a standard length gap wedge. I think these clubs can work for all swing speeds (my driver speed is 105mph) and makes the game a little easier. I played in the low to mid 80's this year which is my 2nd year playing.

    I think many golfers could benefit from a finely tuned one length long iron set for that 7 or 8 through wedges might be better with your standard lengths

  • @justinstephenson9360
    @justinstephenson9360 5 лет назад +1

    I think you need to look at club head speed for the 3 clubs. The club head speed for the 5i was lower than for the 7i and at times lower than for the wedge. To me that indicates that Mark was not confident with the 5i and was trying a "controlled" swing (it rarely works for me either!). At first blush these are not "hot" irons - ball speed for Mark's swing speed was fine but not exceptional, although that will depend heavily on strike.
    Then there is the spin rate issue. I have severe doubts about the ability of these clubs to stop a ball on the green with a 7i. Should be fine in the winter with soft greens when height plus descent angle will do that job, but as the greens firm up during late Spring & Summer I just cannot see the ball stopping quickly - even worse would be on a links course in a hot, dry summer.
    These will work for many people but I think there are better irons out there for a Mid HC - JPX919 Hot Metal or Forged, AP3, i500, Rogue, M3 being the obvious ones.

    The Cobra lofts are super strong. I have a single length set with 36.25 inches in length where the Cobras are 37.5. My 9 iron is 44 degrees and PW is 48. 5 iron is 28 degrees. The shorter length and higher lofts make my results for distance much less than you show, but consistency is very good.

    @francoisdesmoulins-lebeaul4273 5 лет назад +1

    Wow, that 7 iron loft is somewhere between my 6 and my 5 iron... No surprise that the 5 gives inconsistent results and low spin... it's probably a 2-3 iron in disguise and the length of the shaft does not change that with such lofts getting the ball airborne and spinning requires both speed and well centred strikes.

    Recently fitted for new clubs, tried the one length, hit them well, but they didn't have them available in a forged in my part of the world until the F9s come out and I had already sold my old clubs so settled for a set of Srixon Z785. I use a dual length set. 8-LW @ "36.5 and 2-7 @ "38. Works well. Less of the issues of too high of a flight on the higher lofts and less of an issue of declining decent angle with the long irons. Fewer lengths of clubs to practice too; Driver, 3 wood, long irons, short irons and putter.

    The critics of these one length sets are missing a critical point in their reviews: the real consistency comes after using the same length club over a bit of time. Most golfers struggle in finding the correct address position. In a traditional set, golfers have to manipulate different club lengths, swing lengths and ball positions. When a golfer is extremely comfortable in their address, the success rate of the swing -shot increases. Btw, it certainly wouldn’t cost much to make ur current set one length. Have the longer clubs cut and re-gripped. Have a couple clubs plugged at the end and gripped. This would leave u with the costlier proposition of a reshaft in only 1-3 clubs, depending on whether u want to lengthen the pw. I will probably keep the pw the same length.

    Not something you can just pick up and put in the bag, I've been playing them for a few months now and the gapping is spot on, consistency in length with the longer irons is so much better for me (mid handicapper) and with Arccos I know my distances to a yard. I love the short irons just have to be careful with more spin in the wedges than traditional length, my spin number for 7iron is very healthy and only 500rpm down from my Ping S55 6 iron (closest loft)

    i dont understand why know is talking about bobby jones.... way back when he played he played with same length irons... to expect something different the very first time you hit them after you have played is foolish... you need to go to the range and hit them for at least 5 or 6 or more months to get the feel.....bobby playing same length clubs won the grand slam... all in the same year and NO ONE has ever done that but him....... i will say maybe you should use your standard length clubs up to your 9 iron then start with the 8 iron on down use the same length clubs.... just a thought.....

    I've been playing one length for two seasons now, 5i down to lob wedge F7's. I wasn't impressed when I tried them on the monitor, but I decided to get them anyway and play them full time. They took some getting used to, but now I have no desire to go back to regular irons. I managed to drop my average score by nearly 5 strokes. I can't say that I can attribute all that to just the clubs because I have also improved my short game . I can say, however, that the clubs have given me some much needed consistency, and I hit a lot more greens. To be fair, it wasn't a straight forward improvement, there is a bit of a learning curve with them.

    I think the biggest change in going from standard to one length is the mental adjustment. If you setup to a one length 5 iron like a standard length five iron you will struggle to hit your 5 iron consistently. Once you get to the point of having a single setup that issue will go away.
    The other thing to be mindful of is swing speed. If your swing speed is slower, your ability to hit longer irons will be affected and you may want to look at a hybrid option. If I lose anymore club head speed I will need to trade my 5 iron for a 5 hybrid.
    One length irons aren't for everyone, but I would say players of all skills from beginner to scratch can play them. I think better players are more suited to the King Forged instead of the F7 or F8, tho.

    I built a set of one length irons probably 20 years ago. In fact I still use most of them. The issue I had was in the lie angle of the clubs as the length increased or decreased. The wedges up to 8 iron tended to be more toe up, and the 3,4, were a little toe down, while the 5, 6,7, were all pretty normal. If the lie angles were adjusted to the length of each club...it would have been a great idea. As far as distance....I don't know that it really made much difference in the 6 thru wedges. The 3,4, and 5, didn't go as far because of the shorter shafts. The, rest I could always choke down on the shaft to control distance better. I ended up changing the lie angle of some of them to stop me from hitting them left all the time.

    • @pikeevans8559
      @pikeevans8559 3 года назад

      What I should have done was from the 3 thru 5 ... make them the same length, and the 6,7, and 8 shorter, but the same. then the 9, wedge, lob wedge, and sand wedge shorter but the same length I think that would have been better.

    I have the F7 One Lengths. The only issue i found with standing at a mid iron stance was that the longer irons (4,5) flew on a much lower trajectory in comparison to a standard length. Similarly on the shorter irons, they tended to fly higher than what i would get from a standard length. Plus i have to agree with the inconsistency in distance from shot to shot, but that could be pilot error. On course they didn't hold greens as much as I'd like. I've since went to a standard length set, but kept my One-lengths...just in case....

    Rather than just playing around with Lofts the Wishon Irons have different face designs to get the Gapping more consistent.

    The gapping isn't too much of an issue imo, and that's b/c with a regular set I struggle to hit a 4/5 iron with any consistency anyways. So the fact that I can swing one lengths and get even a few more yards with a lot more consistency is a big win for me personally. I get a bit more than what he saw but again, anything is good b/c the point is they're easier to hit than a traditional 5 iron.

    I’ve made the same point on other reviews. Your tester had an average Clubhead speed of about 85 mph.
    The average male golfer swings his 7 iron at 75 mph so he would swing his SL 5 iron at 75 mph.
    That 5 iron (22o loft) swung at 75 mph would not launch.
    Cobra make SL for ladies who swing slower than males .The lowest iron in that set is a 7 iron.
    Your tester has more than average CHS but even he couldn’t launch the 5 iron satisfactorily
    For the more average golfer he would not get anything lower than a 7 iron off the ground.

      I'm almost 70, with the physical history that goes with the age. My swing speed on these clubs is about 75MPH. I'm not getting the distance that James' mid-handicap tester was getting, but I have no problem launching every club from SW to 4I. You have to deprogram from graduated length clubs to get a consistent swing through the entire range. And the performance of these clubs is significantly better from 6I and up.

      Boyd Grandy . As someone of a similar age I sympathise with your age issues. However you may be selling your self short on club speed.
      A pro on you tube tests clubs at lesser speeds. One if his tests was with a ping 700 ( 7 iron 29.5o loft).
      He swung it at 75 mph and got 136 yards carry peak height of 26 yards. If he was to swing a 4 iron (22 loft) at the same speed he
      Would have a lower peak height and very poor carry. A good club fitter will tell you if you cannot swing a five iron in excess of
      80 mph you should not carry one you need a 5H. If you are launching a 4 iron well with good carry you are swing it faster
      Than 75 mph.

      @@ulster7717 Maybe you should think in terms of the club designation in the M8 SL irons being an analog of the standard length club set.
      To get more bang for a similar swing speed, the single length iron faces are made with lower lofts and, as they get into longer clubs, the face reaction tends to get higher.
      So, for me, a 75 mph swing on a 4 iron in this set gets me 185-195 yards, with 10-15 yard of that being rollout. An 8 iron is 145 to 150, a 6 iron is 160-170 and so on.
      Anyway, I'm pleased with the results, especially dispersion as they go up the set.

    • @ulster7717
      @ulster7717 5 лет назад

      Boyd Grandy . I am delighted with your results. But if you are swinging at 75mph you can not hit those distances with any club.
      I just witnessed a pro test a 7 iron swung at 75mph . He got a carry of 136 yards.. You are hitting the ball LPGA distances
      and they are not swinging their clubs at 75 mph. If you are hitting the distances you claim you CANNOT be swinging at that speed.
      I have made clubs for years as a hobby so I understand what you can do with weight and COG. That’s why hybrids work better with
      slower swings. Congratulations on your results but you need to get a trackman test to prove what speed you are actually swinging at
      and what CARRY you are getting.

There wouldn't be anything wrong with a set which comprises some one length hybrids (that you already have) plus one length mid irons and standard length short irons and wedges. I know that goes a bit against the grain of the one length concept, but going strictly one length isn't for everyone and shouldn't be discounted if it works for you. At age 66 I have found a better SL club for me. See www.milfordgolf.com.au My current set is 6 iron to GW, plus I have their LW for summer ( 60/04 bounce) . I replaced the Cobra F9 5 &6 irons with a SL 19, 22 , 25 hybrids . Much better! Graphite shafts now and love them.

    Hey James I don’t understand all length clubs wouldn’t that hurt you when you got to the 6,5,4 because the length are shorter, and you may not hit them as far and when it comes to your wedges and your short irons what you gain is a little bit of distance and heigh. You answer someone’s question by saying something like a 7-iron is basically the same as the 5 iron I’m a little confused the loft on the 7 iron is totally different and the length on the five would be actually shorter than a normal five so I’m confused with that statement.🤔🏌🏼

    I think I might struggle to not “quit” on the swing when I had the pitching wedge in my hands and only 125 yards to go. I think the length of the club would make my brain think it was going to go to far. Also, managing the ball direction because of the height in windy conditions might be an issue. The one length is a interesting concept. I think that these clubs getting fitted is possibly more critical than with progressive length irons. You’ll need every data point working for you to hit them consistently and to get the gapping right. Also as some of the others have stated this set may not be ideal for the slower swing speed players. Especially the 4-6 Iron they are so strong lofted and the shaft is short making clubhead speed tough to come by and making it difficult to get the ball up. Bryson Dechambeau had his set custom built for him. Getting the loft, lie angle, length, weight of the clubs, the bounce, everything...... custom. I think I was watching him play and the commentator said his irons are 12 degrees upright. A big part of that being he does a single plane swing. The one length irons can be successful under the right conditions.
