Finally a one length review without all the golf snobbery. An open mind is what's needed to truly test one length and you guys are the first to do it right. All other reviewers feel the need to change ball position, or choke down and don't seem to understand the concept of 'one length - one swing' and therefore don't do the clubs or concept justice. Excellent job as usual.

I've had a set of Sterling's for 18 months over Cobra's then F7's. While I think Cobra has a fine product, I like the fact Tom Wishon/Sterling had a better handle on some of the limitations of the single length concept and offered better solutions. I also like the idea the clubs were more bendable and if I ever got to a more detailed fitting session they could easily be tweaked to my specs.
My goal when I bought the single length set was to become a better ball-striker. That has happened. The idea that a proper, expert fitting could maybe make the experience even better? To me that's the most exciting part of the video!

  • @justinstephenson9360

This really shows the value of the gap testing and just how big the difference between the average player and Matt is.
I hit my PW just over 130 yards in air, so 12 yards short of Matt. By the time we get to the 5i the difference between Matt and me is over 25 yards. What this shows is I need a gapping session to understand where I lose distance

You guys NAILED this one. I've had passing thoughts about the single-length approach, but never invested in them because of all of the work that would go into setting them up. The concept that would work for me would be keeping my swing shorter. I tend to get too long with the longer irons, and this would literally solve it without any work!

Thanks for a very comprehensive test of the Sterling irons. Tom Wishon is actually one of the biggest proponents of custom fitting. Tom actually has more than 200 golf club design patents, including the patent for the first high COR iron head. Maybe Jacob told you but a) Jaacob talked with Tom first about creating single-length irons something like 5 or 6 years ago, and Tom was not then interested, and b) when he convinced Tom to create the Sterling irons, he and Jaacob spent 2-1/2 years to develop the present Sterling irons. More than that, Tom is a terrific person. Thank you again for all of the great videos you create.

For those thinking of getting these irons note that they will be retired this year and replaced with a new version in early 2020. This is a comment that Wishon made on his website: "Now all that being said, I can tell you that come the end of 2019 we are retiring the Sterling single length model from the Wishon Golf product line. In early January Wishon Golf will release its successor, a totally new design that will keep all the good things of the original model and add a number of new features that will make this new model really quite good in my opinion. Both the GW and SW will be of the same SW type profile you like on the new SW of the current design. Both will be milled face as well. All soles will be very substantially radiused from face to back with more rounding of the actual leading edges. The low loft irons will still be high COR and the primary base length will be 36.5 still because I do think that really helps vs anything longer. Other big thing will be optional matching hybrids and woods but these both will be made with additional weight addition capability so if a player wants the hybrids and or woods at normal incremental lengths he can do that, or if he wants them at single length that can be done as well. While Sterling even with the few little things I would have done over were really good and paved real ground in the viability of single length as an alternative to incremental lengths, it is fun when I get a chance to do a 2nd generation version of a model because I always learn something from the original model that I can step in to make better."

@@salvatoresanjose712 yeah I'll be honest my biggest improvement has been with the wedges. My 5 iron i occasionally have a hard time hitting a draw with it, it seems to always leak a little right on me but my bad shots arent nearly as bad with the SL 5 iron as my bad shots with a traditional length 5 iron. I know with my 5 iron I can sometimes start standing too far away from the ball and swinging harder as it than I do with my other clubs because I think subconsciously I don't trust that it's going to go far enough. When I try my best to hit it like it's my 7 iron I have no problems.

I’m with Ian and love my 6 iron. All my clubs below 6 I hit comfortably at the varied lengths they are supposed to be but have struggled with consistency in my 5, 4 and 3 irons. Finally I cut down my long irons to 6 iron length and after a quick angle adjustment I hit consistently with a good 12-14 yard gaps. The hardest part was going from a 3 iron swing to a more 6 iron set up but it only took probably 5 range sessions to adjust. Just goes to show that there’s more options than just one length or standard varied length irons someone could go with. With technology nowadays the options are limitless and it really depends on how the individual is best suited.

Matt's consistency (and distance) is incredible. I've been playing the Wishon club for a few years and have a love hate relationship with them. Right now, I'm back playing them from 5-9 but prefer my Mizuno 919 wedges for short game forgiveness due to the bounce on the Mizunos. My warning for mid handicappers is the Wishons have to be struck really well. If you hit them fat, their sharp leading edge digs in hard.

Dear TXG, I've been using these clubs for about 6 mos now and they are great. I do however use only the SW to 7i and have since moved to a 30deg hybrid.
My brother and I have this ongoing debate that since I only use the 'shorter' clubs - then I am actually better off with VL irons (they're shorter so it's easier, I'm only 5'9"). While my contention is, SL should make it easier for me to consistently have the same swing - even if the clubs are a bit longer than usual.
Anyone's thoughts are welcome as we are both amateurs discussing the same point over and over :-)
Thank you for this review - it was interesting to see how lie and loft was still adjusted from the 'standard' set and how much it dialed in the proper performance of the clubs.

When are you going to review the Wishon EQ1-NX one length irons. It's the next generation of Sterling irons. Could you also try them with the Wishon S2S Black 85 stiff graphite shafts.

I have a set of Sterling Irons that I have played for the past couple of years and love them. I had similar concerns about the wedges. So my set is 5 iron thru 9 iron. I have to also adiust the loft between the 6 and 7 iron and 8 and 9 iron. But I would tell people to try therm out, thanks Greg 0450

Loved this. I wanted to do something similar with Edel. Getting fit is the key regardless of length. Cobra is too basic to gain the most performance

I am a golf beginner but found Tom Wishon on the web he was my first go to for golf club information ie swing weight, length, lie etc, of course I add you guys to that list, I’m not in a position to get new clubs fitted, but good information on how lie, length and shafts effect performance is very interesting and will help me purchase second hand clubs in the future , I am very impressed with your fitting adjusting the gapping and flight on these one length clubs. My concern would be that a lower swing speed player like me would not generate enough ball speed to keep a desirable 7,6,5 iron ball flight and gapping. Thanks.

Best dispersion Matty's had with any iron set...i think! How do not even mention Deshampoo and his success lol? You squashed all the forums and industry arguments over one length in a 27 minute video...well done! If Matty hits those that good first time round how good would he hit those if he gamed them for a year?!?!

Awesome review guys. As You guys know I’ve been playing the Sterlings for 3 years now and they have completely changed my game. Glad to see you guys do this. Cobra had the f7’s out when I got my sterlings but they couldn’t hold a candle to these. Neither could the F8 , the forgedtec or the F9 and I’m the biggest cobra fan! The sterlings are incredible. I read on toms website they’re might be a “better players” version coming. But I find these to be great. 4 - LW. Hope more people try them!

I played the sterling for 2 years all at 8 iron length which was fine for the PW, GW and SW, the gaping through the rest of the set didn't work , not focusing on the negative though I always felt six iron length would have suited the rest of the irons, I still have them so it's time to rebuild them, cheers great video guys

I sold my AP1-718's and got a set of Sterling irons. 5-SW Best decition I ever made in my golfing game. I can hit my 5i 190 yards all day long and super straight. Feels like cheating! I got mine all 8i I'm 5'7 so the 8i lenght was the way to go for me. People at the driving range keep asking question and asking me if they can try them. one ball position one swing. Takes a few rounds to get the feel for it.. After 3 rounds no problems what so ever. I wont ever go back to coventional set.

Nice video and shows how getting a gap testing session and having the lofts and lie angles adjusted for you is so important. Good to see that the Wishon Sterlings have performed well and Matty liked the feel and not too bothered by the offset. Mr Tom Wishon has designed some seriously nice clubs, not flashy but really can be customised and works. Would love to see if you guys could test some Wishon drivers and see how they compare to others on market.

Great review guys. It puts an objective perspective onto the one-length debate and shows what well engineered one-length clubs can deliver. Great clubs too from Wishon Sterling, it seems. I don't think Matt has ever hit so many straight shots.
    What would be your view on a two-length irons set, i.e. 4-7 at one length (e.g. a 6-iron length) and 8-PW/GW/SW in a shorter length (e.g. a 9-iron length)?

  • @banditbaker1675

Feeling bored this morning so watching some back TXG videos and it reminded me how good this review was and how well Matty hit the Sterlings SL Irons.
Now that the new Sterlings replacements (EQ1- NX) are being launched it will be good if you could repeat the test/review and see how the new version compares? I believe that in the new EQ1- NX's the longer Irons (in terms of distance, not length) are hollow-bodied, so it will be interesting to see how they compare to the original Sterlings.

  • @mukulrawat62

wow no problems at all, the percentage of bad hits are less than 5%. Good to know. I have been building SL clubs for my clients and they all are very happy with the concept and results. Cant go wrong if fitted for gaping as the height and spin rates are well within the expected range.
