    Hi everyone, I'm a french clubmaker who's been working 6 years+ with Tom Wishon. I've sold many sets of SL "Sterlings" recently to very different players, from low single digits to beginners. I don't have anything against Cobra, I really do respect any brand trying to improve equipment and make golf easier and funnier. But I just believe this SL "concept" is much better done when, as a clubmaker like me, you only buy the STERLING heads and then you can build a very specific set :
    - I will make sure all heads are the same weight (which is NOT possible in today's tolerance by any foundry)
    - I will make sure all shafts are the same weight and bend profile
    - I will adjust, if necessary, the lie angles
    - I will adjust, if the player wants it, the length for some clubs : for example, a 5 iron at 37.5'', then 6 to PW at 37'' then GW and SW at 36'' ; in that case, I will have to adjust the head weights and swingweights accordingly
    - and of course a clubmaker has access to ANY shaft and grip available, not just 3 or 5 options ...
    So, in a nutshell, the STERLINGs allow the clubmakers to fine tune the set to a specific individual, whereas any OEM concept cannot : it is just an "off the rack" with a few shafts options where head weights, shaft weights, bend profiles, ... are subject to tolerances +/-
    I hope this helps because people tend to forget how a club is made.

    Hey Mark, I noticed the yellow tru vis ball was much easier to track flying after you hit it. Would using them on more vlogs be a possibility as seeing the ball after you've hit it makes for better viewing. Thanks

    Played f7 one length for 6months and the concept bought me. But in reality at 5 ft 6 the short irons are to long and destroyed my short game . I have now traded them in for same model but with standard shafts and my game is back on track. Didn’t realise how heavy they were until I returned to a normal set.

    It should be noted that when you order the Sterling Irons you can also customize the swing weight which is quite clever. A nice extra level of customization.

    Entertaining as usual guys! :D Epic up and down from the path as well as the GW bunker shot at the end.
    Now that you have played more with them, would you say that the single length irons are more or less beneficial for the overall game? Like, Matt for instance was finding that he liked choking down on them around the greens. So I don't know if that was because it was a "used to chipping with shorter clubs" thing or a "too long for such a short shot to be done with control" thing because the longer something is, the faster it swings through.

    The Sterling irons also do same head weight, so total weight is consistent throughout the set. But the Sterling irons definitely emphasize increasing the COR for the long irons, whereas the Cobra Forged One irons focus on headweight more (I suppose because they're more of a players' iron).

  • @SOLDOZER
    @SOLDOZER 7 лет назад +1

    The Cobra have different head weights, but the same swing weight. The Sterling heads are all the exact same headweight.

    I'd be keen to try pw-4iron single length but I think I'd always stick with my normal 50,55,60 wedges. Mentally it would be - drivers & woods/"mid irons"/ wedges.

    Mark I am a club maker/fitter and I am curious what shafts did Wishon send you for the Sterlings? Also what shafts did Cobra use for their single length irons? The reason I ask is I have found that most of the "average" golfers do better with a lighter weight mid bend point shaft. If they are too heavy they struggle with ball flight. If they have a low bend point it tends to balloon the ball especially in the scoring irons.

    I think the single length shaft for all your clubs is a great idea, we all struggle with switching up to longer irons it's even hard to find 1 irons now a days imagine have a 1 iron the same length as the easiest and best iron you can hit we all have that one iron in our bag that's just the easiest to hit we tend to go to it for everything and that could be for all my irons ?! Yea sign me up.
    And it would make the game easier for new players too a lot easier.

    • @awesomespursfan35
      @awesomespursfan35 7 лет назад

      I think the hardest part is getting used to a gap wedge that is 7 iron length. as the boy's were saying in the video. I feel like I would just be losing a lot of the control. You might be able to get used to it though, I'm not sure.

    • @SOLDOZER
      @SOLDOZER 7 лет назад

      1 iron would not have enough loft to get the ball up at that length. You would need serious swing speed.

      @@SOLDOZER they don’t do a 1 iron. Lowest loft is a 4 which I think is about 21degrees. I have a fairly slow swing speed and have no problem hitting it high

    Kind of intrigued about them seems like its more of a trust issue than performance they perform well just have to trust hitting a long or short shot with a longer or shorter club pending on distance to standard lengeth

    • @SOLDOZER
      @SOLDOZER 7 лет назад

      I have the Sterlings. They are awersome. But like you said, there's a mental block. You have to just trust it. Holding a 36.5" club in your hand with a 190 yard shot tells your brain "This is all wrong, the ball will never make it". If you can't learn to trust the clubs, you won't like them. If you learn to trust them, they are money.

    what would happen in regards to custom fitting with these one length clubs? would it just be a matter of finding a shaft you like? obviously adjusting lie angle would defeat the purpose of the clubs design? interesting stuff.

    • @fritoboat13
      @fritoboat13 7 лет назад

      Callum Ferguson You choose the shat that is best suited to you. As far as lie angles, it's the same for all clubs.

    • @callumferg9b
      @callumferg9b 7 лет назад

      yeah that's what i thought it would be, quite restricting compared to normal clubs custom options

    • @fritoboat13
      @fritoboat13 7 лет назад

      It's not really. When I say it's all the same lie angle it's still custom. All the angles are the same in your set, but you can decide what the angle is. If your current 7 iron is 62°, then all your irons are 62°. Bryson is something like 14°upright but you can be 4° down if you want.

    Mark/Coach what type of shot would you say shows the biggest advantage of the 1 length. I was thinking that hitting from an uphill lie with the ball above your feet, would be much easier with a shorter length 4 iron than std. P.S. Come on coach use that Gap at the full length, Cobra are saying it's easier from a more upright stance.

    I don't understand the compensations used on the lower numbered irons (4, 5, 6, etc), Cobra increasing weight, Sterling increasing COR. One of the concepts of the single length is that a difference of half an inch adds almost nothing in terms of Club head speed (1/122 of the length of the club plus the arm). The loft alone should take care of the distance each club hits. The 1Iron Golf people have been making single length clubs a lot longer than Cobra or Sterling, and they don't need any compensations between clubs. What am I missing?

    • @stephenjohnson80
      @stephenjohnson80 7 лет назад

      Tom Donnelly , the issue with the 1 iron clubs is ball flight height. Sure keeping all the clubs the same length and making sure everything else the same is fine. The main problem for single length clubs is ball flight height in the 3,4,5, irons. Making sure the decent angle is appropriate enough to land on the greens without extremely roll out. What Wishon has done is that He figured most people would do well enough playing an 8 iron and to offset the heighth issue in the longer irons he added the COR face. In David Lake's irons you will need some serious speed to get them up in the air or you would be playing stinger shots all day. Tom's way allows slower swing players to play his clubs with out diminishing returns. Hope that helps.
