The only race at Daytona run in October due to the Daytona wildfires of the time, of all the hype and fun of the Pepsi 400 race being run on July 4th it hurt not to see it on TV. My hat is off to whomever posted this. I thank you.
What a great time and product this was. Before energy drinks and the UFC came along, these guys were the most fearless bad asses on the planet. Also, I LOVE old night races.
great upload. Thank you. I was at that race. It was my first NASCAR race and it was an unbelievable experience. It was agony having to wait from July to October. Great childhood memories.
+Jordan Bickhart That initially wasn't supposed to happen, there were wildfires all over FL July 4th weekend, and the race was moved to October. Sounds pretty cool though that they had both plate tracks back to back weekends
I'll never forget when TNN came on the air that night, i thought to myself, wow this is really for real, night racing at Daytona. It's easy to take for granted now, given how many night races there have been since then, but i still marvel at the sight of Daytona all lit up
I remember watching this live as a kid. Earnhardt was dominating this race and I was so pissed when he hit that tire on pit road.Still pisses me off to this day.
I think it was because it was a postponed race, it was supposed to happen on July 4 weekend of that year, the race was postponed because of outbreaks Florida fires during the summer.
CBS was set to air it live in July, but I imagine they had a scheduling conflict when NASCAR had to move it, and picked the off-weekend after Talladega (probably their only choice).
During the 98 season they could, They had a rule that allowed them to go 1 or 2 years IIRC back and run that car. The nose on the Taurus was 2" higher than the Thunderbird.

What a shame what NASCAR has become. It sucks today compared to this. And Buddy Baker....the gentle giant! Such a great guy and, in my opinion, the best booth guy ever!
Yeah because they were real cars designed to race and go fast. Now everything is engineered in such a way to be close and competitive that it is almost robotic and formulaic. But just because you have more competitors in contention does not mean better.
I left for Navy Boot camp in August in 98 after high school and I was pissed I missed this debut under the lights. I forgot why was this not run in July? Wildfires?
A few teams still used the Thunderbird on the plate tracks (23-Jimmy Spencer, 47-Billy Standridge, 97-Chad Little, & 98-Rich Bickle). They perceived an advantage for the T-Bird. For Standridge, with a very small budget, the Thunderbird body may have been what was more affordable.
As always 👆that JJasshole is a goddamn liar and a fuckin moron. Dale started the race with that reflective trailer tape. Long before he ever bent the nose up from that loose tire. I'd say it's for the spotter to see that car easier down the backstretch, easier to pick out that reflective tape than to discern one dark car from another
I quit NASFARCE five years ago. I’ve been rewatching old races and buying Diecasts from independent vendors ever since. And you know what? I wouldn’t have it any other way. The Frances and Kennedys don’t give a shit about the fans. I’m living in a time when Bill France Jr built something that everyone wanted in on.
They listen to fans. The problem is they've been listening to the CASUAL fan. They're also following the lead of automotive executives who don't have a clue about racing (Tony Stewart knows more about that matter).
that tire hit by Earnhardt was left there on purpose.. scumbags would do it just for that reason. They know they suck so have to garbage like that. other ways of screwing other drivers is pulling into your pit box too short to hold up the other guy. Its bullshit
This race was supposed to be run in July on CBS, but I reckon CBS had a scheduling conflict when this race was moved to October. CBS covered this race live in 1999 & 2000.

Those cars sounded amazing.
what I'm saying. epic
Yes they did, modern nascar is cool but nowhere close to what it was in those days.
@@gran_turismo_fan If NASCAR would get their heads out of their asses, they'd mandate X pipes to at least bring the sound back.

I wish, back then, TNN could've broadcasted more restrictor plate races.. just perfection in this race.
TNN's only Daytona Cup Race
and what a way to do it
If Earnhardt hadn't hit that damn tire. He might have pulled the Daytona sweep.
What a great time and product this was. Before energy drinks and the UFC came along, these guys were the most fearless bad asses on the planet. Also, I LOVE old night races.
grew up in the 90s going to races with my dad. Nascar races live in the 90s was an experience. So many, many people.
great upload. Thank you. I was at that race. It was my first NASCAR race and it was an unbelievable experience. It was agony having to wait from July to October. Great childhood memories.
Wow! Talladega and Daytona were back to back weekends? That's crazy.

Zach Trull cool for stupid fans. not for the drivers and teams. they honestly all hate it
An easy way to trash two cars in back to back weekends.
Daytona in October??? Indianapolis in July??? That is NASCAR in 2020.
@@jamesgentry13 Shut the fuck up.
What a year Gordon had! Seen him win at Sears Point that summer!
At least Kenny Irwin lead laps in a Winston Cup race in his short life #RIP
I never thought Kenny would mount to much. His passing hurts but I wish we could have known how good he could be.
First night race at daytona, this race was epic

I like how my hero Jeff spanked every body.
2:05:00 the theme of WCW thunder playing!
This Race Would've Run In July, If NOT For Wildfires. :P
I was there awesome Gordon! !!
Damn those cars sound good
I remember watching this live as a kid. Earnhardt was dominating this race and I was so pissed when he hit that tire on pit road.Still pisses me off to this day.
It feels strange seeing a restrictor plate race on TNN. Normally they were on CBS or ESPN.
I think it was because it was a postponed race, it was supposed to happen on July 4 weekend of that year, the race was postponed because of outbreaks Florida fires during the summer.
@@JoseGarcia-et2ep That’s true. I just found it odd that it was on TNN.

Now we need Dega under the lights.
Chevyblock 550 And Indy 500 as well
Please no! Keep it the way it is!
Holy shit, it's a talking muffin yeah because making a track night is going ton effect much no it’s not.
@@tamezzodiac2862 Too many Cup races were moved to nighttime. It didn't take long for the novelty to wear off.

Anyone know the story behind the red and white tape all over Earnhardts car?
Dale hit a tire on Pit Road so they were fixing the mess up on his front end
As always 👆that JJasshole is a goddamn liar and a fuckin moron. Dale started the race with that reflective trailer tape. Long before he ever bent the nose up from that loose tire.
I'd say it's for the spotter to see that car easier down the backstretch, easier to pick out that reflective tape than to discern one dark car from another
I think this was a way for Earnhardt’s spotters to see his car on the track.
Easy to make that mistake, it was the Taurus's first year.
