Sadly this would be Kenny Irwin Jr.'s last Cup race before his death at New Hampshire. His #42 car became the #01, then became owned by Chip Ganassi in 2001 and became the #41 in 2002.
This is how it should be. No mandatory yellows. Teams strategizing with each other. Strategized green flag pit stops. This is how it should always be. NASCAR needs someone in charge who really understands what the fans want. And it’s THIS.
@@brotherjoseph8344 That's weird because every article said Mike Helton was in charge and that Brian did not take command until New Hampshire in the fall of 2003
Coverage is suppose to provide the framework, the canvas, the atomosphere, but the event itself needs to paint the picture, that's the difference. That's what CBS did well, Ken Squier couldn't be a better example of that. Way too much overanalysis and meddling by the current crews, hell that's the problem with all media in general today.
I remember how the mandated shock package that year really made the Fords shine at Daytona. Watching Earnhardt be the only Chevy driver able to really contend just goes to show how damn good he really was.
Seemed like the Chevy drivers weren’t thrilled about the spoiler design on the Monte Carlo / too much resistance & downforce competing against the Ford body & spoiler. Jeff referenced it in a post race interview after the 400.
Something about the way CBS broadcast NASCAR, just made the sport seem better, it just added something extra to it, a special touch. Today, Fox, ESPN, and TNT have decent coverage, but nowhere near the glory days of CBS.
2:19:33-2:19:49, "Jeff Burton won his first Sprint Cup race on CBS. He comes off turn 4 and he's gonna win the final Sprint Cup race on CBS. JEFF BURTON OVER RUSTY WALLACE, DALE JARRETT AND MARK MARTIN WINNING THE COKE ZERO 400!"
He's referring to two weeks prior to that, where he bumped Earnhardt out of the way at Pocono on the last lap to win. Was supposed to be taken as a joke.
I was at this race, sitting about 20 rows up from the start finish line. Would have been an interesting finish if not for the late caution. Dale and Dale were hooked up and running the field down. The late caution did them both in.
I was there. Was 10 years old. Came all the way from Indy for it driving. Miss going to races when Nascar was at its peak with every race being a huge deal and sold out crowds everywhere with tracks still with all their stands before taking some down
5 лет назад+3
I like that CBS station in Los Angeles of Southern California.
I was at this race with my dad when I was 8 years old. We were both huge Bill Elliott fans. Really thought he was gonna win that night. We were sitting near turn 3, so we experienced Skinner dump him first hand. I was definitely not a happy camper after that lol.
I really wish CBS and CBS Sports Network were calling races starting at Daytona with Speed Weeks and continuing through Sonoma, and then from there, NBC and NBC Sports Network called every race from the second Daytona race (Coke Zero 400) through Homestead. Better yet, I wish every network that has called races the last 35-40 years (CBS, The Nashville Network--though now it's called Spike TV--ESPN, ABC, NBC/NBC Sports Network, TBS, TNT, Fox/FS1, and FX) still had broadcast rights for at least a couple of races every season.
hard to believe that this not only was the last race at daytona and period for cbs, but also one of the last races with good commentary and with earnhardt finishing at daytona before his unfortunate accident in the daytona 500 the next year
Yes!! I grew up watching NASCAR on CBS in the 80s. They used to broadcast the Daytona 500, the Michigan 400 & the fall Talladega race. Combine those races with the Firecracker 400 shown on Wide World of Sports, and I used to think the good ole boys ran just 4 races a year! 🤷🏻♂️
1:46:52 Buddy says you could hear Skinner get out of the gas and from about 1:46:49 until he finishes getting in the back of Bill he sounds like he's running 3 quarters of a throttle. Also, everybody's checking up there because Mark Martin's almost in the grass and Skinner just didn't get on the brake quickly enough
Brian France got ahold of it because he is the son of the chairman, he don't have any experience, he is so detached. I even hear he wanted to own some soccer teams, a hockey team and his name has even popped up as a bidder for an NFL team.
Exactly. As the economy continues to go down nascar tickets continue to sky rocket. It is really nascars fault attendance to their races is so low now a days, nobody can afford the ticket prices.
another historic race....blaney, martin, stewart, jeff burton, bobby labonte, kenseth, bliss (part time), dale jr, gordon, nemecheck, terry labonte (part time) and robby gordon are the only ones left running the cup series....what a shame...but we got some good names filling the rest of the fields today....it's just amazing that 11 years ago seemed like yesterday....they should alternate the 500 each year....FOX, ABC, and CBS
(dmetl) #486 - 317th race I've ever watched ... 117 on the net ... 82 that I enjoyed with a dip of tobacco ... 33 that I've watched in the month of November ... 5 that I've seen from the year y2k
that's actually a helmet skirt that drag racers wear. a lot of nascar guys wear it now as nothing more then an anti buffering device for radio communications. it provides no other benefit that a balaclava woul.
If you pause @ 1:41:40 mark you can see why Bill had to get out of the gas. Mark's almost in the grass. I miss when you could pass under the yellow line
Its incredible how much fan attendance has gone down for these races. It looks like they are almost sold out for this race. Now a days they dont even open the back straight away stands for this race and the front stretch is only three quarters full. Its weird man, nascar is hurting.
At Daytona for the July race they usually dont open the back stretch stands. There have been a few years when they have, but for the most part they only sell those seats for the 500.
With today's rules, Ricky Rudd who started second would have been black flagged at the start for changing lanes before getting to the start / finish line!
Two people have it already. Complete coverage from the start of the pre-race or portions of the pre-race to the end credits including commercials that originally aired including from whatever the local FOX station you were able to watch. One of the uploads has a technical issue between lap 85-99.
hearing "the rookie Matt Kenseth" or "the rookie Dale Earnhardt Jr." makes me smile :')
RIP Buddy Baker
Was watching this late at night and I fell asleep at some point. Mike Joy yelling "OH, TROUBLE!!!" at 1:41:40 woke me up immediately.
That's awesome
😄
Ken Squire- best broadcaster ever
11 years later and I absolutely agree
Sadly this would be Kenny Irwin Jr.'s last Cup race before his death at New Hampshire. His #42 car became the #01, then became owned by Chip Ganassi in 2001 and became the #41 in 2002.

Someone with a VISION needs to be at the helm.
So much nostalgia here. Nothing better than watching the summer Daytona race.
This is when NASCAR was worth watching, before Brian France got a hold of it.
#TRUTH
Actually Brian France took over halfway in the 2000 Daytona 500, I was there and it was announced over the radio and PA system.
@@brotherjoseph8344 That's weird because every article said Mike Helton was in charge and that Brian did not take command until New Hampshire in the fall of 2003
I love when DARFs claim the good old days while the race is boring af especially compared to plate racing today.

I miss CBS, they covered NASCAR with class.
I was sitting at the top of the Superstretch that night . I had a smile all night watching Big E.
Same
I miss this kind of racing 🏁
Gotta love dale jarrett!
I remember how the mandated shock package that year really made the Fords shine at Daytona. Watching Earnhardt be the only Chevy driver able to really contend just goes to show how damn good he really was.
Ford's also shine at Talladega that year also Mark Martin dominated the diehard Talladega race in 2000 but Jeff Gordon won the race.
Seemed like the Chevy drivers weren’t thrilled about the spoiler design on the Monte Carlo / too much resistance & downforce competing against the Ford body & spoiler. Jeff referenced it in a post race interview after the 400.
18:09 Start
@S2KINDYCAR Final Winston Cup race on CBS, their final broadcast was the Craftsman Truck Series from Nazareth July 15th, 2000.
I was at this race, 8 years old! Seats on the backstretch and John Michael Montgomery had a pre-race concert, what a time to be alive
Man i miss the way they used to sound, i miss when they actually had some HP i miss everything that NASCAR has destroyed.
Gordon had absolutely no help at all in this race and still got a top 10
He was that damn good
Something about the way CBS broadcast NASCAR, just made the sport seem better, it just added something extra to it, a special touch. Today, Fox, ESPN, and TNT have decent coverage, but nowhere near the glory days of CBS.
who knew that Micheal Waltrip, next time he would go back to Daytona, he would win the 500 while losing the man who gave him a break...
It’s ironic
Anyone else here after seeing Jeff’s son win the 2024 Coke Zero Sugar 400? Like father, like son!
Me!
The 2000 Pepsi 400 was the last NASCAR cup race to be broadcast on CBS.
Pontiac... One of the few respectable cars on the circuit back then.
Kenny Irwin's last NASCAR race
Man I loved him. Watching speed TV. He was great!
CBS should do some NASCAR races in Primetime including the Daytona night race
It's on my channel. Feel free to watch!
I remember the grass on the track used to be brown grass and dirt. Now you can play golf on it.
Kan Squier was that voice of God back then
Not to disregard any other race analyst, but no one else can come close to calling races like Mike Joy and Ken Squire.
Amazing to think that for all their success, this was the first ever points win at Daytona for Roush Racing.

This race needs more attention
That crowd!!!!
What a sound these cars used make..COT and Gen 6 sound tame in comparison.
I was at this race with my dad when I was 8 years old. We were both huge Bill Elliott fans. Really thought he was gonna win that night. We were sitting near turn 3, so we experienced Skinner dump him first hand. I was definitely not a happy camper after that lol.
I'm not even a Elliott fan and I was there with my family and we still don't like Skinner after that.
Back when nascar racing was cool.

Not gonna be the same cause the people are different
Much better than the Daytona 500 5 months earlier
hard to believe that this not only was the last race at daytona and period for cbs, but also one of the last races with good commentary and with earnhardt finishing at daytona before his unfortunate accident in the daytona 500 the next year
In the intro they happened to say "and survive" as the camera shows turn 4. Scary in February of 2001 it was to come true
NASCAR in it's glory days. I don't care if I was 4 that year, I watched this race
I always remembered CBS having excellent NASCAR coverage
Tends to happen when you only have 4 races to cover
Good Ol' Days!!!
Last Cup race on CBS, and the intro was some Survivor tie-in bullshit instead of a retrospective of their Cup coverage up to that night.
20 years ago today.
20 years and 2 months ago today.
Almost 24 years ago now.

The Hoosier Kenny Irwin Jr.’s last ride 😢
This was the final race for 2 things. Kenny Irwins last start, and the end of CBSs era of Winston Cup Coverage.
dale last full season :( 3 4ever
Also, that would be Dale's last Pepsi 400, and this was Kenny Irwin, Jr last race
He had them beat. Skinner King of wrecking. Bill u had them
Back when NASCAR viewed more then just Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordan, and all them other top runners these days. GO BOBBY LABONTE!!
Back when the world was normal. Pre 9/11 and pre COVID.
Thank you greatly for this! I've been wanting to see it for a long time!
No one should complain about the racing at Daytona and Talladega today after watching the first 3 RP's of 2000.
Exactly. As the economy continues to go down nascar tickets continue to sky rocket. It is really nascars fault attendance to their races is so low now a days, nobody can afford the ticket prices.
I couldn't believe how few people were there for this years Coke Zero 400
Survival NASCAR Edition. LOL
I love the look of Ned Jarrett in the introduction.
@ 22:20 Oh! I'm sorry, I got excited!
Since the COT, the exhaust has been out the right side of the car. Before they could have had exhaust on both sides or just the left side.
They couldn't put enough seats in these places when Big E was alive.
That Mayfield comment aged poorly
Bill Elliott might sound like just a happy good ol boy... yeah i dont think i wouldve fucked with him though
The last NASCAR race on CBS

thanks man.
This is a great Nascar race from 2000 at Daytona and I think that's terrible this was Kenny Irwin Jrs last race before his death

DIDN'T Jeff Burton dominate this race?!
@ciccone39 that was Texas Governor George W. Bush, who later on became president of the U.S.
Dustin Krueger lol
Anyone else here after the return of auto racing on CBS with SRX?
