    I'm sixty years old, I first followed NASCAR in the late sixties. To me NASCAR's golden era was from the late eighties until the early 2000s. On the super speedways this race here was the peak. The aerodynamic package was perfect. The cars were competitive and stable. When Dale died I knew that they would throw this package away, they did. Mandatory neck restraints, better seats, and safer barriers are among the good things that came from that tragedy. But there was nothing wrong with this aero package, it worked. As for "The Chase" format, I thought that it was an obvious mistake from the beginning. I hung around for a year or two after that, hoping that they would see it as the failure that it is. They did not. Breaking up races into stages was the final straw. I have no interest in what they currently call racing, and I'm not alone. This was great.

    I'm sitting here in Germany watching this again after all these years. I first saw NASCAR when the cable guy came by shortly after my parents got divorced and he deliberately left eurosport unrestricted because I think he felt sorry for us in this small apartment in the black forest near Basel. When we watched zombieland at University, I was the only one among many to understand the 3 on Woody's car. I still watch most races till today - what a brilliant sport!

      ^^ What Matt said. These cars provided great racing but they weren’t safe whatsoever. Drivers couldn’t afford to do some of the stupidity that they do in present day. Couple that in with straight up concrete walls, open faced helmets, and very little safety mechanisms, one bad move could put you 10 feet under. This was truly a dangerous era of NASCAR racing, and it’s truly unfortunate that it took the death of Dale Earnhardt the next season for NASCAR to do something consider they lost 4 or 5 drivers in 2000 alone.

      ToaAntan No, this wasn’t their finest. Even at this point many drivers including Sr. were complaining about NASCAR ruining racing. Super Speedway racing died with restrictor plates. I’m not saying that plates didn’t have to be mandated. NASCAR simply couldn’t afford cars being launched up into the grandstands due to lawsuits but that didn’t change the fact that the plates killed Daytona & Dega racing. I’m plenty old enough to remember racing before the plates and even this example isn’t even close in comparison.

      @NASTY CANASTA hahahahahshshshsh 450?!?!?!? There has NEVER been a cup car with that low of HP in the modern era until 2016 when they got those new shit 550hp engines and that's the lowest it's ever been. Yes they all had plates, once again let me educate somebody, restrictor plates do not affect horsepower very much, they restrict fuel flow and airflow WITHOUT taking thier HP that was the whole point of using them so they could take power and speed without taking away much HP...just do yourself a favorand go Google it, the cars from the 80s until 2016 hand anywhere from 750 to 900HP... go now...get

    • @badmonkey2222
      @badmonkey2222 4 года назад

      @NASTY CANASTA what the fuck are you talking about??!- Bill Elliott when he set his speed record the cars had almost 900 horsepower that year, I said the engines now from 2016 onward when they got new engines had lower HP the new engines in 2016 they produce 550 on super Speedways and mile-and-a-half tracks with the spacer and they open them to 750 on short tracks and road courses, I never said anything about the cars back in the day not being able to produce more than 550 you said that that's what this whole thing is about now you're claiming they had more horsepower????? Your the one needs to lay of the crack, from EARLY 80S UNTIL 2016 HP VARIED FROM 700S TO ALMOST 900, AFTER 2016, 550 SSW AND MILE 1/2s, 750 ROAD COURSES AND SHORTTRACKS... and read what I said restrictor plates restrict air and fuel which do restrict horsepower but not much that's why they use them, they definitely didn't cut the horsepower in 1/2 to 450 there's never been a cup car with 450 horsepower in the modern era......Period until now they are close because they suck now, like everthing else, music, etc.... and damn dude you're the one talking about restrictor plates why do you think they couldn't set up all record like Bill Elliott's with 850 horsepower? because they have restrictor plates on Super Speedways in the early nineties man some of the cars had almost 900 HP.

      @NASTY CANASTA AFTER FUCKING 2016 DUMBASS YES YOUR ARTICLE IS FROM 2018 and once again I never said that they couldn't produce more than 550 after 2016 I said 550 on super Speedways and 750 on short track and road courses how many times do I have to fucking say it can you not read???????? and before 2016 they absolutely had over 800 horsepower I will get the links right now dumbass.

    I was born in 2001 so I never had the privilege to watch Dale Sr. race. I grew up a HUGE Dale Jr. fan and even went dressed as him for Halloween. I always asked why he was called Jr. I was too young to realize that he was named after his Dad (Dale Sr.) so it made me naturally curious about Dale Sr. I watched a documentary about him on ESPN and I felt like I was watching a story about a superhero. The stories I heard were flat out unbelievable and mesmerized my 7 year old brain, ever since then I've been a huge Dale Sr. fan. I started to get into iracing now as an adult (can't afford to race IRL right now) and I constantly watch his highlights and past races to study how he and his competition drove. The moves he would make seemed so bold and crazy but we're extremely calculated. Not other driver would try to edge someone else out nearly 4 wide on the straight at talladega, but he did MULTIPLE times and was able to get his nose under another car and make a cleanish pass. I aspire and hope to understand a race car the way he did.

They stopped letting you bring large coolers into the track after 9/11. $10 beers n $12 hamburgers priced hardworking people out n that was the major fan base. Plus most drivers are not from the south. They gave up on the people that made this sport as big as it was!

    ...and not one single person in the NASCAR universe would have believed that in less than a year from this race that Big E would be gone! We've lost so many over the years but none had the impact on this sport like he did. The King had his reign no doubt and is still around but even so there was no way NASCAR "could have been" the same after Daytona 2001... I was never really even an Earnhardt fan but there was no denying his talent and skill as a driver... Present day NASCAR is no longer the "spectacle" is was then that Dale helped create and as far as I'm concerned it never will be again. Even the drivers who were a part of this then know that now. That's why they're getting out. We had a name for these guys when they started. We called them the "young guns"! Now... they're just young and that's about it. - Rest in peace Dale! You are sorely missed.
