That shot on the backstretch is incredible. Full stands, under the lights, 100's of camera flashes. Beautiful.
I’m with you man, sorta disappointing that they took away the stands off the backstretch
Dakota Brandon waht they did?
What is the time stamp?

NEVER AGAIN
"Surely, the season can't actually get any better than this....... can it??"
Me, a Gordon fan, pretty much every week in 1998
Yeppy same here
@Mike North It's why he intentionally wrecked him at Richmond. Rusty was always a jealous little pussy.
@@WhoopityDoo That's ok I punched this rusty wallace fan in the face in Loudon. I had a 24 hat shirt on walking around shit face and half witted dumbass bumped his gums and lost some teeth because of hit.
Gordon in the mid 90s was a force to be felt with. In to the early 2000s he still was strong
12:31best start to a race I’ve ever seen. No commentating, fans cheering, a wide shot from the infield as the cars take the green with the rpm’s rising up, especially with the old plate sound. That was just poetry in motion.
I got chills
But muh boogity!
The commentary has fallen off across the board. Bestwick was one of the last who had the feel for when to not talk.
Complains in boogity
Not only that, thousands and thousands of camera flashes.
By this time in 1998, HDTV’s were selling out to the markets the first year. This HD quality wouldn’t be adapted by NASCAR until the 2004 Daytona 500 & used full-time starting in 2005.
Anthony DeLoreto how are you doing today
Earnhardt, Gordon, Wallace, Elliott, Jarrett, Labonte x2, Martin, Rudd, D. Waltrip, Marlin, Irvan, Burton x2... Golden Era of Nascar with grandstand sold out each week... We'll never see this again.
Lol, same driver keeps winning. Jeff Gordon won 7 races in a span of 10. Won 3 of the final 4 races too. How is that special?
@@vidmasterK1 The grandstands where still full tho even with all that you've stated and the sport was still growing and not even at its peak yet until 2005. Even before Covid how have the grandstands been looking? Whats so special about empty seats hm?
@@vidmasterK1Kyle Larson 2021 entered the chat
17th straight top 5???? Bruh, people don’t realize how DOMINATE that 24 team was! Crazy man. And then he won two more races
Been a fan since 1999 and I was watching this race a few days ago. Jeff Gordon Dale Earnhardt Rusty Wallace Dale Jarrett Mark Martin Bobby Labonte etc. Now these boys knew how to DRAFT.
25 years ago today. Hard to believe it’s been a quarter century since the first ever Daytona race under the lights! NASCAR did a really great job remastering this footage to HD which looks super clean & the entire turnout was awesome all around!
That Bobby Labonte soldiers paint scheme is my personal favorite paint scheme from Labonte.
That was the most awesomest paint scheme from the 90s and I got that as a 1:24 diecast
@@juwannabuildashnowmayne2392 I have the diecast as well although the one I have is 1/64 scale.
Underrated Movie
Takes me back to when I was 9 and this race aired for the first time. This was truly a special race to watch, a worthy successor of the all-time 500 from February.
It's too bad we'll never see this much enthusiasm and people just enjoy something they like ever again.
Thanks NASCAR for the upload.
Man there will never be another driver like Dale Earnhardt, a true racing legend
This race... it just screams late 90s.
was actually held in October 17 1998 it was postponed because of wildfires on July 2 that year it was supposed to be on CBS over the air on July 4 but it was moved to TNN on cable for race on October 17 1998 luckily our family had cable back then😊
If not for hitting that damn tire, I think Earnhardt could've pulled the Daytona sweep.
There Will Never Be another Jeff Gordon
This has got to be the most asthetic night race i've ever watched. Something about the lighting system, and old 90's NASCAR makes me wish I was there.
Who's playing a NASCAR game while listening to this?!? I AM!!!
Thank YOU!!!!! This is the race. My favorite race. I just have awesome memories of sitting and drawing Nascar race cars while watching this race. I'm a Bobby Labonte fan and love the Small Soldiers car so much. I love the commentary crew and just everything about this race. The first race at Daytona under the lights. It was such an amazing night for a Nascar fan. I'm so glad ya'll finally uploaded it. THANKS!!!
2:00:49 am I the only one who noticed a young Bob Pockrass during the Kenny Irwin interview?
My favorite race from the 1998 season. Thank you
Thnks nascar for the replays for nascar fans too watch for memories of fans of all ages in the stands, cheering on ur FAVORITE DRIVERS AS THE EARNHARDTS, JARRETT, BOWYER, PETTY BROTHERS,IVE LISTENED TOO SANDI PATTY SINCE WOW 1980FANTASTIC SEEING FIREWORKS
The first Daytona NASCAR Cup points race under the lights isn't held in July like it was supposed to but this race was still a remarkable race 😇🎉🙌💚
You're right it was actually held in October 17 1998 it was postponed because of wildfires on July 2 that year it was supposed to be on CBS over the air on July 4 but it was moved to TNN on cable for race on October 17 1998 luckily our family had cable back then😊
Matt Hartley Jr how are you doing today
William Wilson how are you doing today
@@kattypeterson308 I have been good for the most part .... How have you been
Matt Hartley Jr hello how are you doing
Notice the new Coors Light logo on Sterling Marlin's #40 car, sporting a silver bullet paint scheme.👍
Another race I never saw BITD. Very cool! Thank You NASCAR!
TNN did awesome with nascar always showing the fans made it really cool to watch
That Rich Bickle paint scheme is the most 90s thing I have ever seen. love it!
Seeing Lepage collapse after getting out of the car makes me glad NASCAR freezes the field at the moment of caution. I remember watching the New Hampshire race where Jarrett was parked on the front stretch facing traffic as they were racing back to the caution. It’s a good thing they changed that rule almost 20 years ago.
The only Daytona race on TNN
It was supposed to be on CBS but since they were doing college football and NFL they couldn’t broadcast the race
and because of the wildfire that got this race moved to october, this remains the only year in which daytona & talladega have been run back to back
If it wasn't for Bobby Labonte's errant tire laying there in the middle of pit road during the lap 94 green flag stops, Gordon would have had to deal with the Intimidator. I feel that Earnhardt would have done the Daytona Double by winning the inaugural primetime Pepsi 400. Great job by the crew to fix the valence after pushing that tire like a hockey puck. Rallied to finish 10th, but what could have been.
Commando Elite was way too focused on wanting to win this race its their fault
Damn, 11 races !! Jeff Gordon tore it up in 1998!!
Amazing quality for 1998!
People say these things like it was 1950's technology. This was in the early years of HD (MNF was in HD in 1998) and when you first watched things like this live, even on an analog TV, it came in crystal clear. Video deteriorates over time, that's why you see a lot of things on RUclips from the 80's and 90's that don't come in very well because the quality of the uploaders video was poor. Like I said, even on analog all live events I remember came in crystal clear when they first aired.
I really do miss the backstretch grandstands it sucks that it was removed.
This race took place the same day Alabama played Eastern Carolina…..So it begs the question with Eli Gold in the booth for this race who in the world was calling the Alabama game

It's the first time I've see this right now I hope every race at Daytona has an night race and no day races in respect for most fans and t.v. viewers as well.
This race was run on my 4th birthday.
I have a pepsi 400 t-shirt dated August 16, 1998. interesting they didnt change the dates on the print due to the wildfires
This video reminds me that IndyCar really needs to upload the other three IRL races in 1998 that aired on TNN (Charlotte, Atlanta and Las Vegas).
Jeff Gordon's 1998 monte carlo was such a Beautiful Machine!❤🔥🌈
YE
Dales black 3 was even cooler
Where's 2001? It was supposed to be the great July 2001 edition won by Dale Jr. in the first Daytona race after Dale Sr. was killed in the 500, yet they seemed to go with the wildfire theme...still good race but not a good last-minute awitch
This is when NASCAR was great cause you had people like Terry Labonte and Dale Earnhardt Sr
1979 rookie duo
And clarity it's the 1998 Fall exibition race at Daytona.
wow only 16 lead changes in this race both daytona cup races this year had more than that
Why were some of the Fords the Thunderbird instead of the Taurus?
Some teams felt like the Thunderbird was faster than the Taurus which in raw speed it kind of was. It didn't handle as well. Plus smaller teams could get a better car than what they had despite it being a year older.
This is great nascar at it’s peak
I miss the sound of those cars
Yep
They should move the 400 back to October for the playoffs! Better weather and other stuff!
Thanks for the million ads
NASCAR - Please stop putting the winner in the tumbnail, lots of people haven't seen these older races yet.
Thanks
I think by this point people know the history and thumbnail doesn't matter. Should wilkapedia remove stats to.🤷🏻♂️
This was an awesome race
William Baker how are you doing today
more like boring follow the leader race
Brandon Davis hello
@@brandondavis3347 it was like nobody wanted to move out and draft past Gordon it was weird it was a lot of races like that that Gordon won and I'm like why don't they gang up on this guy. They just going to let him win all the races that year it was odd to me
Where they were talking about crashes on avoiding
As a fan to I its as a airplane to I awesome sounding crazy racing but there in the seats you have the leaders as pilots. But there all in seats as passengers of this plane and its not if but when it goes wrong.
*October. Not a July race.

Why did you change it from 2001 to 1998? That's stupid...
we all know what happened in 2001. Thats completely being overdone at this point. You can find that race anywhere on the internet EASY. Move on.
Well, smart ass, we'll that's true, we want a better quality version. It makes a big differences. Some people actually cared about it.
I dont mean to disrespect Dale Sr. I miss that loveable guy as well. Sorry for being a smartass.

I've got Ryan Preece winning Daytona Sunday, I've been waiting two years to say i was right about him, i know he can do it.
I don't get why everyone's hating the idea. If anything it'll only make JJ's retirement season look much better than the disappointment its been #GiveNatalieThe48

It’s such a shame what this sport has become.
This was before NASCAR was ruined by the chase format
Bot.
Ever since the chase was implemented in Nascar the sport has went down hill and the grandstands have become more and more empty by the year. There is no debate in that. I agree 100%. Those that do not agree need to show me where the sport grew in popularity since then. Ill keep waiting.
Thomas Roberts that’s wrong, NASCAR’s most popular season by attendance and tv ratings was 2005. the chase was introduced in 2004.
@@shilpi326 I know this and I agree. But the timing when the stands started to go a miss was in the same timing. These things take time. You're not going to see a massive drop off immediately. To my and many peoples point the chase era specifically around the birth era of the chase is when stands went amiss. Even if you want to say 2008 that's only a 4 year difference which isn't much time and is a considerable drop off from 2004 to 2008. The point being mainly the drop off in fans in the stands and television ratings are circulated and line up cohesively around the birth of the chase era. That is indisputable. Ive been a fan since 1999 and I know this also.
@@shilpi326 And when you look at the ratings and stands from 2004 to 2013 you cannot sit there and seriously say with a straight face that multiple changes to the points format (COT atrocity and 2008 recession aside) did not play one of the major roles in the fan base drop off. This defending the chase thing has gotten real old and pointless. Its not even close.
