Everyone talks about jr going 6th to 1st in 6 laps, but nobody ever talks about the fact that mikey went from 14th to 2nd in 6 laps
@@DixytheGoat9 yeah,I'm honestly surprised I forgot about him,him and mikey were underrated that race
Kyle Busch from 300-400 car lengths away from the leader in Pocono, 2nd race 2021, and won while stuck in 4th gear, in just 20 laps, he was 30th but there's lot of cars lapped
I have a feeling that Mickey could’ve won that race but he held back and blocked for JR. Mikey had a better car IMO
For sure waltrip could have won but as he said himself he didn't want to
@@brapa1190 dont have to spam everything.
Every time I think of this race I always imagine Dale Sr. looking down from heaven and saying "...That's my boy!"
:( absolutely
yep 😟
I see this comment 10 months later and I am over here crying. Thanks for that.
@@jpizzle1223 same bro
Agree😢
“USING LESSONS LEARNED FROM HIS FATHER TO GO FROM 6TH TO FIRST AND SCORE THE VICTORY IN THE PEPSI 400!”
😭😭😭😭😭 The most powerful words in NASCAR
chinnypanda agreed.
AMAZING CALL
Allen Bestwick is so underrated as an announcer. He had so much passion for calling races!
@@kilpatrickja I don't think he would be the same without BP.
everything about this era of nascar was pure gold. the commentary, the cars, the racing, the crowd, the charisma of the drivers, even the way the cars sound seems better. simply amazing time in this sports history.
@Hiroshi Miya microphone quality changes over time. That and the engines are different
@Hiroshi Miya The exhaust was on the left side in those days instead of the right like it is now. It was also shaped differently I think.
@Hiroshi Miya Yeah these cars were really cool. Not as safe as the current ones but these looked and raced better.
Especially the announcers. I can not watch NASCAR now with sound on. The current line up talk constantly. They never shut up. I believe they get paid for each word. You can't enjoy the race.
I actually just watched a video on the exhaust of these cars, it has to do with the x pipe in the exhaust that they ran. Guy replicated it on his Cadillac and it sounds pretty similar to what these guys were running. Love that sound
Jr and Waltrip hugging at the top of Mike's car... what a moment to NASCAR
NASCAR fans: Do you want us to cry with tears of joy?
NASCAR: Uhhh yes
Dale Jr. made two more emotional wins at Dover and Dega.
hahaha
It's not funny, Braxton... but it's 100% true. NASCAR fans need emotions too.
I wish I had a time machine so I could experience this race in person.
Same
I was a month of my 17th birthday when this race aired
I was there in the backstretch grandstands which have be torn down since then. Nobody was going to try to pass Dale Jr. except Tony Stewart, cause ya know, Tony don't give a damn.
@ARE YOU FEELING LUCKY PUNK Exactly, Tony's success as an owner comes from hiring the best people and not going along with the NASCAR narrative of how it should be. He does it his way and it works.
I watched this race from the beginning all the way to the end andI jumped for Joy
I've been a Ford guy my whole life, but I remember being on my feet in my living room, heart rapidly beating through my chest, and cheering loudly for Dale Jr. in those final laps. There were tears of joy running down my face as he took that checkered flag. This was one of the greatest moments, not only in NASCAR history, but sports history. Mikey finally getting to celebrate his Daytona 500 with a 2nd place finish here was pure poetry as well. Man, it's still emotional to this day watching the replay.
I'm a Dodge person
No matter if you're Chevy, Pontiac, Ford or Dodge... you need to admit Dale Jr. deserved that win.
Yes!!! When Chocolate came and hugged Jr that broke me. So many people felt Sr at that track that day but NOBODY more than Jr.
Chocolate Meyers being the first to hug Jr. is really, really something.
Those last 7 laps we didn't see Dale Jr drive, we got to see the old man one last time on the track to let us know he's ok. Emotional.....only an Earnhardt can pull this off!!
Kinda wish he could've helped jr win his last talladega race and Jeffrey Earnhardt win at dega in the spring race
I seen that car doing Dale sr. And Ralph Dale sr manuvers. Jr is very very good. But mmmmm
What we saw was an extra 50 horsepower that nobody else had. JR was running 3/4 throttle and pulling away lol
@ Slimdean no we didn’t. We saw an extremely emotional young man with a will to win drive that car all night. I get it that we all were hurting back then from Dale’s death, and we all wanted some sort of divine inspiration from above. But don’t deny Dale Jr’s win or his teams ability to put together a fantastic car
@@drunkengamer7378 I agree with you, what my initial point was the maneuvering through the field was reminiscent of what his father did at Talladega. Jr's team put together one hell of a car that day and jr's determination to overcome the track his father lost his life on. Yeah we were all deeply hit with his dad's end, but what I was referring to was the maneuvering that made me think of seniors last win the year before. That's all but I do agree
Still gives me chills and tears when I watch this, especially when Chocolate is the first to run out there and hug Junior.
How can anyone not love Chocolate Myers. One of the greatest personalities in Nascar.
Me too
Love Michael Waltrip man, hearing him so happy just made me smile 😃
Those 2 hugging on the car at the end has to be one of the most beautiful moments in all of sports..
That's one of the best NASCAR races of all time.
20 years to the day. The most emotional finish I've ever seen and the end to what I think is the greatest racing story.
Those last 7 laps will forever be in my memory
His dad was with him all 7 laps I know it
God Bless Ralph Dale Earnhardt Jr. He had God given talent, gives me chills. RIP Benny Parsons. Damn special.
Benny being so excited is great at the end of the race. Amazing event all around. It is one of my favorite races I saw as a kid.
There will never be a better victory than this one. EVER
Elliot Sadler saying in the post race saying "I beat Michael off pit road and I pulled over and said boys he's going to the front I'm just gonna follow him" he wasn't wrong!
Miss that red #8. Nice to see a similar one running in the two car series. This is the race that I'll probably never forget. Best moment in the sport.
Also, miss you Benny. The sport hasn't been the same without you.
Man there's nothing better sounding than those restrictor plate cars back then, those cars screamed!
Beast inside
Other than Dale Sr's Daytona 500 win in 1998, I think this race and it's outcome is probably one of if not the most defining moment in the history of the sport, because of the story-line that went along with it. You really couldn't write a better script.
Great race. Also can’t avoid mentioning “Fuel” by Metallica playing on the background all the time🤘🏻
Yet the most emotional finish EVER! R. I. P Dale Earnhardt
I was there with some friends that night, it was great, we were off turn 4. It was so loud, everyone was cheering
Was at this race on a fluke occurrence. One of the best experiences of my lifetime ❤
Don't think a flute but years of work from three generations! But awesome and perfect timing for 1st and 2nd was first too!
@@stephenmitchell3569 I think when he said fluke, he meant it was a fluke that he was at the track that day, not that JR won
I've been waiting for a higher quality race replay for a while
These are the cameras they filmed on so without interpolation, this is the best you'll get. The 480p TV you watched it thru in 2001 had much larger pixels than the 1440p phone screen you're using now
20 years later today, it's still one of the greatest races ever to happen
Not just for the result, but the actual race was incredible too. Those boys were racing their asses off all night.
I would pay for every nascar race ever filmed to be uploaded in maximum broadcast quality
I was always a Martin fan but I’ve never pulled for a driver to win a race like I did Jr in this race. Absolutely amazing race. I was literally standing up and yelling by myself in my living room.
NASCAR will never be the same
Can’t believe it’s been 20 years since this
My first Daytona race was in 98 when Dale Earnhardt won not missed a race since then twice a year we went best time's ever. not renewing my tickets anymore just not the same .sad. glad I was part of this generation
Couldn't have been a more perfect ending to this race 😭
What a fantastic race
Dale JR was awesome and especially when his father died on that track
Simply put a very deserved win for that number 8car
21 years later and it still gets me all emotional. I have this race on a vcr tape.
The crowd going nuts when Jr. passed Benson going into 4, chills dude...
Bring back Allen Bestwick
Yes! Nascar, respect his authorita!
Seriously. Rick Allen is ass.
This was a very historic and memorable race
NASCAR can be epic at times. This was one of those times. The crowd roaring over the cars gives me chills.
20 years later this still cuts the onions. One of the most incredible sporting moments of my life.
The best race ever. Definitely emotional
The most amazing story book ending to any race. Best story ever. DEI is TOUGH (BACK THEN)
Cry everytime I watch this. Own DVD also.
20 years later still brings a smile to my face and a tear to my eye!
ah the pinnacle of emotions you can feel at a NASCAR race. Allen Bestwick Benny Parsons Wally Dallenbach ushering a new era on NBC...
Nobody gonna talk about how you can literally see brittany spears left nipple
Glad I rewatched the beginning
you can see both lol
Great Win for Junior, raced like His Dad.
Everything about this era of NASCAR was just perfect. Will never be like this again. To see that many guys racing so frantically and keeping it clean in the final laps, amazing. Best drivers ever, period.
This is the race that healed everyone. This was the moment that everyone could finally move on.
I always come back to watch this race every so often. This was peak nascar. My father attended this race and said the atmosphere was something he’s never felt before.
One of my favourite races for sure, it was just too perfect to be true
I remember watching it live but it’s still awesome that dei swept that year at Daytona what a tribute
Dale Earnhardt and Dale jr are my favorites all time this race means so much to me
They are both my favorites as well
Dale Earnhardt Sr was and always will be our favorite!
Hard to believe this race will be 20 years ago this year
Let's you know we are all old now i was 10 watching this. Remember I fought back the tears from showing in jubilation watching jr celebrate
@@TeamHeapMI I don’t remember it I was only 3 years old when this race happened
I was born before the tragic passing of Dale Earnhardt Sr and this amazing retaliation win by Earnhardt Jr, but I am now 20 years old and going into my Junior year of college
Daytona needs a statue of jr and waltrip ontop of the car somewhere outside the track.
20 years ago. Time flies.
The pinnacle of nascar racing right here.
We believe this is the race replay that we all (NASCAR fans and experts) have been waiting for. Like if you agree. 👍🏻
R.I.P DALE EARNHARDT, SR.
It's overlooked what MW did. Went from 14th to 2nd in 4 laps.
I watch this a couple times a month snd literally has never gotten old
A great race and finish. Thanks for showing it again.
I have been to many spectacular sporting events in my life but I remember when Dale Jr took the lead coming out of turn 4 the most the crowd was soooooo loud it was deafening and the stands literally shook it’s the one and only NASCAR race I have ever been to to this day I was 14 at the time a guy behind be at the end of the race while he was spinning around the infield said don’t ever go to another race cause it will never come close to this
I don't care what people say, but Junior in the #8 and Michael in the #15 were by far the best duo in super speedways during the early '00s.
Junior always had a lot of raw pace and speed at Daytona and Talladega, but half of his wins there wouldn't have happened without Michael being such a great teammate and wingman, never afraid of shutting the door hard on anybody trying to overtake them.
And it sure does not hurt when NASCAR gives you that "wink and nod" in the inspection pit when your car has 100 more HP than the rest of the field. This race was clearly Rigged!
@@douglasbuck2359 got any actual proof? Oh you dont? How surprising 🤡
Something about the wicker on the top of the cars make them look so awesome!!
Good to see this race uploaded in high quality, but still I enjoy seeing the prerace show from the other uploads on here
Michael is such a great teammate man
20+ years and dozens of views later and the tears still flow over this victory and celebration. What a night! ❤️❤️❤️
This race and the 500 that year were three years before my time but I can remember bein really young watching races with my grandparents that they had on tape, I got to see decades of Dale Sr. so I guess you could say I grew up watching him race, I may not have been alive for any of it but it still makes me emotional to this day
Thanks NASCAR for the upload.
The Oppermans from Texas will always love and miss you Dale Earnhardt Sr, your devoted fans forever
I was blessed to get a chance to interview Jr in Seattle days after this win. He was there for the baseball all star game
I watched this race live in some cantina in southern baja mexico, so so so lucky that had Directv!!!!! Was in heaven!
I was there to see this live those stands felt like they were going to come down everybody was going crazy crying and hugging each other I remember looking at the sky and pointing the #3 cause I could feel his presence with Dale Jr that night
If Sr would see his son like this
I finally heard what euery sr said to jr. that was just like the old man out there. Unbelievable. I have watched 100 times just now made it out
What a helmet JR had
2001 pepsi 400 had to be the best races i ever watched
Greatest moment in Nascar history
...PERIOD
so beautifull to see EVERYONE celebrating for Dale! must be emotional for everybody there. first time back at daytona.
My all time favorite NASCAR Race ever! I cried my eyes out watching this live.
Just watched this for the first time since the original race and damn had tears in my eyes again! Good Lord that 8 car was fast!
I very well remember watching this race on TV. My brother and I were both cheering when Junior took the lead! What an exciting race to watch!
Watching this race live was amazing. Die Hard Jeff Gordon fan, but seeing Jr. get this win and wearing an open face helmet, purely epic. LOVE IT!!!
A race you never will forget no matter if you were there in person or watched it on TV like I did. The paint scheme on Ken Schrader's #36 Pontiac was amazing.
This race is, in my opinion, the greatest moment in the history of auto racing.
I get chills every time I watch this
If this was Dale Jr’s only Victory. I would still consider it a Successful career for him. The context & Story of this Victory is Incredible. Very Emotional Win.
I remember watching this that summer Saturday night on TV. 2001 was the kickoff of a new age of NASCAR and I think it lived up to it despite the loss of Earnhardt. Had we not had Jr. in the season or have him win this race, the season would have been remembered more for the loss of NASCAR's greatest rather than the arrival of Jr.
The plate Dynasty that was DEI from 2001 to 2004 was no joke. The greatest plate dynasty of all time and I don't think its even close!
2001 Daytona 500 Michael Waltrip
2001 Aarons 499 Bobby Hamilton
2001 Pepsi 400 Dale Earnhardt Jr.
2001 EA Sports 500 Dale Earnhardt Jr.
2002 Daytona 500 Ward Burton
2002 Aarons 499 Dale Earnhardt Jr.
2002 Pepsi 400 Michael Waltrip
2002 EA Sports 500 Dale Earnhardt Jr.
2003 Daytona 500 Michael Waltrip
2003 Aarons 499 Dale Earnhardt Jr.
2003 Pepsi 400 Greg Biffle
2003 EA Sports Michael Waltrip
2004 Dale Earnhardt Jr.
2004 Jeff Gordon
2004 Jeff Gordon
2004 Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Dynasty much DEI? That's 11 wins 16 races! Ive been a fan since 1999 and I haven't seen anybody come close to that level of plate dominance. And it wasn't just Cup. Just go google their Xfinity stats during that time and the non points events like the Budshootout and the Twin 125s. Unreal. Long live Capital E and the plate POWER he left behind. Those cars could literally pass at will most of the time and the race was always for 3rd place. I saw it all and it was just like this race you all just watched.
Hendrick came fairly close between 2004-2007 to what DEI was at plate tracks
Jeff Gordon won the 2004 Aaron’s 499, the 2004 Pepsi 400, the 2005 Daytona 500, the 2005 Aaron’s 499, and both Talladega races in 2007
Jimmie Johnson of course won the 2006 Daytona 500 and the 2006 Aaron’s 499
And Brian Vickers won the 2006 UAW 500
9/16 isn’t bad at all
@@quasimoto7662 they had how many cars, 4? And more money and better drivers, with less wins. Very impressive, but not the same.
Eli White I disagree, considering the fact that whoever wins a plate race these days is anyone’s guess.
In the last 16 plate races (which fits the timeline of this, so it includes the 2016 fall Talladega race, and all the plate races after that), the driver with the most wins? 2. 2 by Denny Hamlin, 2 by Logano, 2 by stenhouse, and 2 by blaney. That’s it.
For Jr to get 7 plate wins in 4 years and for Gordon to get 6 in 4 years is pretty amazing.
@@quasimoto7662 DEI also from 2001 to 2005 won 4 of 8 duel 125's finishing 1-2 in 2 of those races they competed together. They won 6 of 8 Xfinity Series Daytona from 2002 to 2006 races including 3 straight in the February race and finished 1-2 in 2 of those races both in 2002, from 2003 to 2006 won 4 straight xfinity series Talladega races for a combined 10 plate wins in 15 Xfinity Series events. So in 42 Cup plate events including the duels and Shootout and 16 races in the Xfinity series making that 58 races combined from 2001 to 2006 respectively they won a combined between Dale Earnhardt Jr, Michael Waltrip and MartinTruex Jr 25 of 58 races. Again, the greatest plate Dynasty of all time regarding plates in not just Cup but Xfinity too and its not even close. What Hendrick did even in Cup I can tear apart too statistically if you want to do just Cup because i assure you they lose not just in stats but in sheer performance as well all across the board.
And sorry it was 2003 that Michael Waltrip finished second to Dale Jr in the Xfinity Series not 2002. And yes that was the race Dale Jr. led every single lap...just saying.
never had seen the full race before, incredible stuff.....
One of the greatest moments in sports history no question
I watched the race when it first aired in 01 and watched the Daytona 500 that same year and cried both times
Will forever be my favorite nascar race of all time
This is gonna be great.
EDIT: And saying it's gonna be great means saying it's gonna be one of the greatest races in NASCAR history.
I will never watch a Nascar race until the Firecracker 400 is back on the schedule
Totally agree as I went to 4 firecrackers in a row as a kid, maybe 85-88, been a while so I have a little memory loss, lol
It was my dads favorite race
Always in the Weatherly stands off turn 4
I'm gonna come watch this whenever I'm sad that finish makes me unreasonably happy.
great driving and JR had a rocket for a car on those last 6-7 laps. awesome race and you gotta love JR. i remember watching this live there were high fives all around.
