This movie is like Groundhog Day on steroids. They took time-loop movies to the next level. The plot, pacing, emotional look into the negative aspects of of a time loop. All of these things were done to perfection, and then they made it humorous and action packed as well. And after all of that, they give you a top tier cast who own their roles and make you believe. Definitely a benchmark in style, pacing, and presentation.
One other thing I wanted to point out as it is something so very few movies get right are the psychological affects of of the futility you find in war. Watching him stop trying to save people and stop using Rita even though she is his best chance to succeed is heart-breaking.
Tom Cruise’s character is a PR Guy and he does it to avoid combat, he actually was an officer but after he got tased they stripped his rank and labelled him as a deserter
You're so right! This is definitely NOT a single-watch movie. I've watched it six or seven times now, and each watch give me something new that I missed on previous watches. One of the finest films out there - Action, Drama, or whatever. Well done.
2:45 It actually can work like this. The general is the commander of all allied forces, which includes British, American, Canadian, etc. The major is a Public Affairs officer, but he is still a military soldier who is part of the allied force. So, yes, he can easily be under the general’s command. And, threatening to blackmail the general is a criminal offense, so he could legally be subject to court martial.
Cage was a _Staff Officer_ which is an officer who specializes in a profession but is not in line of command. While he would have an understanding of ranks and how the army works, if leadership were to die off, one by one, the lowliest Lieutenant would take charge before he would. Staff Officers are part of the _Staff_ rather than leadership. They can be highly-trained within their field, but aren't leaders except within their field of specialty. The alternate would be a Line Officer, who is capable of leadership and can take over if all of the officers above his rank are incapacitated.
I LOVE this movie, and watching you get so engrossed in it is incredibly fun! Even with less commentary, you're always excellent at honing in and highlighting the filmmaking components that build up to a well crafted, affecting experience, which I admire and appreciate. Thank you for sharing your reactions!
One of my favorite things that you catch on rewatch is that Rita coming out of her yoga pose in slow motion isn't just fan service. Yeah she looks gorgeous, but it's how Cage sees her every single time he first lays eyes on her. Just a little touch of how he's smitten on first sight.
What really interested me about this film is that it combines the novel it was based on (the Japanese book All You Need Is Kill) with the World War II operation it also served to commemorate (the D-Day landings). It was even released on the 70th anniversary of those landings. Verdun is also a reference to WWI, and Operation Downfall was another WWII operation, a planned invasion of Japan. Also, can we appreciate that the story of this film has basically become a way of describing Tom Cruise's entire acting career? For his first 15 years, outside of the original Top Gun and Days of Thunder, he wasn't really that much of an action star. His bravery and dedication to his work has increased since he started the Mission Impossible series, just like his character here became better skilled as a fighter with each loop, to the point that he has done his own stunts for many years now.
I bought my daughter the comic book that this is based on. We both read it month before its release and were disappointed they changed the ending. Rita actually had to kill him to reattain the power in his blood, and it was an incredible mech swordfight on base that spilled everywhere. He won, and painted his suit red in honor of her and continued the fight.
Think of it as playing in video game with unlimited lives until you get to final stage, than you got one shot to beat the game, I love this movie when it came out and saw it first run in theaters. Emily Blunt killed this role
I've now seen this movie at least a dozen times, it's a really amazing movie that just draws you in, and even after knowing how it ends, I really still enjoy watching it!
What brought me to this movie first was Emily Blunt (more than Cruise although I like his work as well), but what I loved was Bill Paxton's job portraying an Army lifer from the South. Near perfection! Brendan Gleason was a pleasant surprise in the cast as well. . .
21:08 How many times can you watch the same person die before all you want to do is save them? She had the same experience with Hendricks. Once she lost the power to reset the day, she also lost the chance to save Hendricks. Whom she obviously genuinely cared for.
There have been many time-loop movies since forever, but if Groundhog Day is #1, Edge of Tomorrow is right up there with it. And I have a third favorite called ARQ from Netflix that no one seems to know about. I really enjoyed that one too and think it's sorely underrated.
this movie shows how to write a strong female character without dumbing down everyone else or berating them just to lift the woman up. this is what happens when the writer focuses on the story than on how will they show how strong a character is. if the story is fundamentally good, everything else will follow
I think they tried to re-market it as 'Live Die Repeat" or just added the tag-line to the poster. Edge of Tomorrow was so ambiguous I think it hurt the box office. I love it. Great Cruise role.
I knew nothing about this movie when wife and I rented it one night. Was blown away. Was a great sci-fi film and I didn’t expect it to be that solid. Was also the first time I saw Emily Blunt and she killed the role as a bad ass.
Regarding the first setup of the movie. Even as a non military person myself I think it is rather straight forward: The character of Tom is someone who joined the military later on out of necessity and eventually became somewhat of a " sheltered desk officer" (if there is such a thing) who was ordered to go on the front line. Even though that was a douche order it was still an order by a higher rank officer and refusing to obey it is punishable by death during wartime but instead they simply branded him as a deserter demoted him to private and send him to the front anyways.
Other movies by this director you'd enjoy are American Made also with Tom Cruise, Mr and Mrs Smith with Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. He also directed the first Bourne Identity movie.
Tom Cruise plays the slimy maggot to hero transition really well. Obviously Groundhog Day did the live a day over and over. But the two leads where 1 goes through that growth arc reminds me of the old movie ZULU 😉
someone probably aready point it out, but the guy who say in 5:40 "is the full metal bitch" is acctuly her brother , they casted him to do that scene because nobody else wanted to call her a bitch XD
Hi, greetings from Hamburg (Germany). I love Movie Reaction channels and this is my first visit to yours... excited. First of all... good quality (writing in the picture doesn't bother me)... after seeing your reaction I unfortunately have to subscribe. sorry Let's see what else you have. Best regards
Protip - use chopsticks when eating dusty doritos or similar. Especially if you are using a remote control or something too. No dirty fingers, easy cleanup. I use some metal (aluminium) Korean ones I bought awhile back :)
@@bigdream_dreambig Works great. Plus you get to enjoy it more since you don't just scoop a hand at a time. And it's good practice for using chopsticks. I use chopsticks for all sorts of things. Cheetos, Doritos and even small candy like those sweet, salt or sour treats :) Pour it in a bowl, chopstick away!
This movie was the reason why I wanted Emily blunt to play black widow. She was up for the part, but was contractually obligated for a shitty movie smh
Film is magnificent but I cannot tell enough, if you like film, you should find original work by Hiroshi Sakurazaka's: "All You Need Is Kill" in which this film is based on. Its kinda mind blowing itself.
The marketing for this film was…. not good. They had no idea what do with it or what it even was. The fact that they changed the title after first week or two in ads spoke volumes.
Please react to CRY WOLF, KISS THE GIRLS, ALONG CAME A SPIDER, PEPPERMINT, FLIGHT PLAN, THE CALL, THE BRAVE ONE, SWEET GIRL, ENOUGH, THE NEXT 3 DAYS, 88 MINUTES, LAW ABIDING CITIZEN, DOUBLE JEOPARDY, HURRICANE HEIST, and FINAL GIRLS (2015)
You'd better see the Game of Thrones and the Dragon House, which has a lot of fans, this might help grow your RUclips mane, as well as the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbits.
I dislike the beginning of the movie because I dislike that he is sent to the front like that. The guy is clearly HR or Media and not realy trained properly for it. They send him to die like a pile of trash. On the other hand, what follows is realy realy cool.

For a similar pair of lead characters check out the old movie ZULU 😉

And the female lead is named Rita, and the male lead is named William (William -> Bill -> Bill Murray).
Lol
I’d say it’s Groundhog Day meets Starship Troopers.
One other thing I wanted to point out as it is something so very few movies get right are the psychological affects of of the futility you find in war. Watching him stop trying to save people and stop using Rita even though she is his best chance to succeed is heart-breaking.
Nah he was trying to speedrun the level to save time and then reloads the save.
Tom Cruise’s character is a PR Guy and he does it to avoid combat, he actually was an officer but after he got tased they stripped his rank and labelled him as a deserter

It’s a good thing he found that save point so early in the movie

You should check out Oblivion. Has a super cool twist

Clariss I didn’t feel like you weren’t commentating enough. You did your usual bang up job.
Very underrated movie
and not appreciated at the time of its release. It should have been a blockbuster at the time, will never know why it wasn’t.
Think of it as playing in video game with unlimited lives until you get to final stage, than you got one shot to beat the game, I love this movie when it came out and saw it first run in theaters. Emily Blunt killed this role

Another under appreciated movie from Cruise is Oblivion. Great movie, great cast and great story!
Fantastic movie!!! I caught it on a plane flight and loved it!
💘Emily Blunt in this! ❤❤❤
Love your reaction,, very smart and insightful, The way Tom face changes after all his deaths is wonderful acting
What brought me to this movie first was Emily Blunt (more than Cruise although I like his work as well), but what I loved was Bill Paxton's job portraying an Army lifer from the South. Near perfection! Brendan Gleason was a pleasant surprise in the cast as well. . .
The first film I would recommend when somebody at their age of 20s or 30s asks me to recommend a film, is this one, Edge of Tomorrow. Definitely.
21:08 How many times can you watch the same person die before all you want to do is save them? She had the same experience with Hendricks. Once she lost the power to reset the day, she also lost the chance to save Hendricks. Whom she obviously genuinely cared for.

One of the most underrated sci Fi movies ever.
The weirdest thing is this film appeared in my TV listings I started watching it then just under an hour ago I got this notification... Weird huh.
This is truly one of the greatest movies ever made. Too bad it did not do well in theaters, but it killed on video from what I remember.
this movie shows how to write a strong female character without dumbing down everyone else or berating them just to lift the woman up. this is what happens when the writer focuses on the story than on how will they show how strong a character is. if the story is fundamentally good, everything else will follow

THE MOVIE WAS AWESOME!
Boss Level is another fun time loop action movie that's worth checking out

One of my favorite movies. It was so good what i even found and read manga on which it was based

But the two leads where 1 goes through that growth arc reminds me of the old movie ZULU 😉
At the end ,He went back in time to the point where the omega last reset the day
It's like Groundhog Day meets scifi alien invasion !
F!cks up with your brain and gives you a headache just watching this !
First to comment. I love your reaction videos
First comment you get a heart 😊
Fantastic movie and your reaction is awesome as usual. Thank you.
EDGE OF TOMORROW!!!!!!!!!!!!!
someone probably aready point it out, but the guy who say in 5:40 "is the full metal bitch" is acctuly her brother , they casted him to do that scene because nobody else wanted to call her a bitch XD
I'm number 2. Wonderful reaction this is one of my fav ones alone with Battleship

I highly recommend seeking out the source material - a manga called All You Need Is Kill. It is much bleaker, but I find the ending beautiful.
i just love your underlying conspiracy theory
I live about 20 minutes from Science Hill, Kentucky.
Love your reaction ❤it.
First battle scene reminds me of saving private Ryan.
The fact he’s shooting means he found the safety.
Protip - use chopsticks when eating dusty doritos or similar. Especially if you are using a remote control or something too. No dirty fingers, easy cleanup. I use some metal (aluminium) Korean ones I bought awhile back :)
Now that's an interesting idea! I'll have to remember it the next time I have Cheetos in my house!

31:29 That it is probably the same claymore from the first loop.
Let's put giant water marked text over the edited movie to avoid copyright issues, brilliant...
Homie ain't dead cuz he ain't gotta be dead😂😂😂
... and I'll leave the vernacular right here.
If you like this you should see Oblivion, another one of Cruise's great scifi flicks.
groundhog day certainly would have been different if bill murray had a mech suits
You should do Brooklyn’s Finest (2009) 🔥
As a follow up to this, I'd recommend either or both of The Adam Project and The Tomorrow War.
This movie was the reason why I wanted Emily blunt to play black widow. She was up for the part, but was contractually obligated for a shitty movie smh
cruise was actually public relations and pissed off the wrong person, it seems. LOL
Great Reaction! 😃👋🏼
Love this movie.
Movie had wrong name. That was "Edge of Your Seat".
@Clariss I'm only going to say this one thing about warfare.... Abandon All reason
"I'm on the edge of my seat."
Are you sure it's not the edge....of tomorrow?
Starship Troopers meets Groundhog Day
I've never understood why the aliens were called "mimics." When did they ever _mimic_ anything???
in the novel, they're called that because they take on characteristics of any wildlife they encounter.
@@cybergeek11235 Huh. Interesting. In the film, they just seem to be a combination of aquatic and subterranean.
Film is magnificent but I cannot tell enough, if you like film, you should find original work by Hiroshi Sakurazaka's: "All You Need Is Kill" in which this film is based on. Its kinda mind blowing itself.
Not enjoyable? How dare you suggest that, Clariss? 😄
One of my fav time loop movies, therefore one of my fav react videos as well.
Peace!
I love commentary however I prefer for the hosts to be engrossed into the movie... But you did a great job
Sometimes I think they just couldn't get their shots right and an editor was all I got this
Have the lambs stopped screaming?
LIVE DIE REPEAT!
Thanks for the video!! See you later!! Stay safe.😊
Your theory was wrong but holly sh@t that would be a cool movie concept
Second to comment … I don’t have a comment lol
Love this movie
This movie is awesome
You should watch American Made next

Have you ever heard of a movie called Ready Player One if yes could you watch it on your channel
24:02 on the edge .. of tomorrow? ;)
Excellent
Conspiracy fail :) this is a alien invasion lady.
Making "Edge Of Tomorrow Movie Reaction" totally obscure the video was a really stupid decision. Dislike. Unsubscribe.
I dislike the beginning of the movie because I dislike that he is sent to the front like that. The guy is clearly HR or Media and not realy trained properly for it. They send him to die like a pile of trash. On the other hand, what follows is realy realy cool.
Yeah well its a great way to show you what kind of unreasonable dick that general is while putting him in a situation he should never have been..
I am so sorry but you misspoke. You are not on the edge of your seat right now. You are on the Edge of Tomorrow. Just sayin'. 😄
