    I myself have been playing for over 50 years now. I will tell you now, publicly, that this is perhaps the best video that I have seen that speaks of the role and the true source of power in the swing. I would only add that the left arm moving away from where it was positioned across the chest, sets the pathway to the impact area. The power and face control is the right hand. As to the 80% of the speed generation (power) coming from the transition and downward drop into the SLOT, I came to understand that years ago. I can simply let gravity hit a great many shots. Yes, using this I lose about 5% of possible distance, but am deadly straight when coupled to a neutral grip. I can simply go up a club or two if need be, just like playing the wind. I found that why this occurs is simple to grasp. When we take the club to the top, we all try to get width in that take-a-way. That causes the left arm to cross our chest on an oblique angle. But the important part to grasp is we are not standing upright. We are bent at our hips (at least ideally). If you simply went limp, your arms drop downward, but that bend at the hips, makes the left arm move away from the chest. It means the club head path is being set by this left arm outward movement. We don't make it happen ourselves... gravity is pulling downward, and we being bent over means that the left arm must move away from where we had positioned it. I suggest you try this right now. Take a wedge to the top and just let your arms drop. Don't turn, just drop your arms. Where did the pathway go? To the ball. Where is that trailing elbow? Is the right arm still bent carrying lag? The answer is the path is non-restrictive to the ball because of the left arm moving away from the chest area. Your elbow is now in front of the trailing hip, and you didn't "pull" it to get it there (connected as some call it). So what does that do exactly??? Well, we hold the shaft in both hands... one above the other from the ground's perspective. Because the left arm moving forward away from the chest is the lower hand, your right hand comes along for the ride during this transition. That right hand moving (subordinate to the left arm) drags the right elbow in front of the hip during the transition. Because the right hand is higher than the left on the shaft, that actually preserves the right elbow bend (creates lag). There is no need of YOU consciously making the elbow get out front of your body plane. It is a function or a result of the left arm re-positioning away from the chest. Once that right elbow clears the right hip, THEN you can use all the right hand you want to add. I would also point out to you personally , that this is exactly what Mike Malaska is talking about in that "over the top from the inside". While the left arm drops away from the chest, bringing that right hand with it, if you are not laid off, that causes the weight of the club to move in front of the body line too. THAT is the over the top aspect, and because the sequencing of the dropping being away from the chest, you create an inside move towards the ball, thus the inside move being coupled to an over the top movement of the club's weight. This clears the left side from interfering with the pathway back to the ball. This is how you can insure you don't ever get stuck, which is really your body just obstructing a clear pathway to the ball.THAT is sequencing to be honest. Most people spin out, instead of PIVOTING around the post leg. If they learned to post up that left leg, they won't pull shots left. They also will stop pushes to the right as the swing line is more complete AROUND THE POSTED LEG. This does not mean they can't fail to square club face at impact, but only insures that the swing path itself is proper. By posting properly after transitioning properly, you keep your body mass over the ball's position. Hogan said he wished he had more right hands... because the left side is just a gravity drop that brings the right hand and elbow into the proper point to fire FROM. Which is in front of that trailing hip. THAT happens while you are still turned away from the target to sequence properly. As for Malaska's call to move the hands away from the ball, that moving or dropping of the hands will swing the club head outward because of physics and the rule of the lever. That is an acceleration aspect of a golf swing. It is not brute force that renders the resulting speed increase, but is physics that is universal and available to everyone... man or woman. Adding the straightening of the post leg through impact is also another speed generator due to a sudden increase of the radii. That is pure Newtonian physics. A change in direction creates an increase in speed, but only if done in a nonrestrictive way. THAT IS WHY CLEARING THE BODY LINE IS SO IMPORTANT. Once you do, your body can not obstruct the path to the ball, thus freeing all your speed generators to reach their highest rates. I am now 65 years old. I am a 2 capper. I swing a lot easier than I did for the first 45 years of my playing career. I now hit the ball straighter, longer, and without any lunging effort into the strike. A gravity based transition will get the left arm off the chest, which establishes the pathway. The sequencing allows the lowering of the swing plane and the weight of the club to move in front out your body line. These two things allow your right hand to juice the shot a little. But even if you don't add any juice at all, that gravity drop creates about 85% of the club head speed. I can do that with every iron and fairway wood in my bag. It also hits the ball extremely straight. For a guy who drew or hooked most shots in life, I have trouble curving the ball in any direction now. It takes a lot of effort actually. THAT was a wake up. When I learned this, I went from a 14 cap down to about a 6 in three or four months. I am now a 2, yet I practice 1/20th of what I used to practice before. Almost all my practice is focused on recovery shots and putting now. I can go to the range, not warm up except for a couple of swings to stretch out a bit, and start hitting shots at the flags. I would say that at 80 yards I can get inside of 4 feet very very consistently (90% or better). All because of allowing the left arm to simply drop away because we are bent over, then adding the right hand at the right time. I am going onto a routine this year so I can attempt the US Senior Am and hopefully actually compete at that level. So my practice will be increasing for a while. For me, the focus is on recovery shots. Almost exclusively. I could always putt pretty well. I trust my ball striking now (incredible!). And I carry about 260 with my drives. (That too is from just a gravity drop.) Sure I can rip into the shot if facing a forced carry, but then it becomes a gamble on the timing aspect. Otherwise, I plan on staying focused on a gravity drop. And to top it off, after 50 years I have finally learned how to chip properly. In my 50 years of playing this crazy game, I think that people trying to amp up on just about every shot is exactly why they fail so completely. That was my own experience too, so I am also a victim of this aggressive playing. I hit a 56* SW 80 yards within 1 or 2 yards on average now. For a sand wedge, that is enough. Sure I can stretch it out to about 90, but usually use a gap wedge instead. With zero effort on my swing technique I have consistent yardages too. My PW is at 119. Sure I can stretch it out a few more yards, but not enough to bother most of the time. If it is needed that badly, I can go up a club and choke down an inch or two to shorten the shaft so I can then swing on a wedge swing plane and pick up 7 or 8 "extra" yards. I have better control on the strike too, as I stay down through impact (covering the ball). I hit where I am aiming because I am not trying to "help" the club to do its job. Straight is about the grip anyway if you swing path is on. My job is to sequence properly using a proper grip and swing technique. The club will do what it was engineered to do, without any help from me. In fact the split second you try to help the club, YOU stop it from doing what it was designed to do. So stop trying to peel the cover off of the ball. Let gravity start your downswing. Say facing away until the left arm is parallel to the ground before pivoting onto and around that left leg. Your 100% right that the right hand squares the face. But to do so, it must be above the shaft at impact, just like you set it at address. If it trails the shaft, your face is open, and there is no way to stop the ball from going right. If it rolls over that shaft, you are going left. It is all right hand at impact.

    It doesn't matter if you pull with the left or push/pull with the right. What matters is WHEN. If the hands don't fall into the correct position you will have trouble. For some thinking about the right hand as control helps get there. For others left hand control gets them there. Which you feel is correct is largely your own perception.

    I’m a left handed, right handed golfer and have sliced my drives for years. Lessons, endless RUclips videos and grip changes have never fixed the issue. All of a sudden I watch this video, switch off the pull of the left arm and allow the right to turn the club over and swing from the inside has completely cured my slice 😲, but as a previous post stated I still need to pull with the left for iron shots. Superb video

    Turn the hips, pull with left hand and keep the right hand out of it. Power comes for hips. That’s what works best for me after decades of being shoulders and right hand dominant.

    As an old vet here, the most profound thing you said was “ pulling with your right hand’ ... but the right wrist needs to stay in a wrist-set position ( cocked) for the first 1/3 of the down swing while you’re in the pulling phase, the left arm/hand is a stabilizer that needs to be softly anchored to the club grip the entire swing....the reason Freddy and Vijay’s hands came off the club because they had totally released with the right arm to the point they partially let go. At that point we need the left arm and grip to keep the club from flying down the fairway.

    Since I got c5 palsey in left shoulder from neck surgery 3mos ago this caught my interest.Been working on this swing theory about 6 weeks now.Doing lots of drills hitting in a golf net since I'm not up to speed yet.I'm still praying I get my left shoulder mobility back.But if I don't I KNOW I can play good golf by using the right arm.I play a few holes now and results have been good.I'm hitting a nice draw even tho I'm still pretty week from surgery.Can't wait till I get my strength back and see what happens then.I was a low handicap golfer before surgery and still believe I can get back there now.Even with some limitations in left shoulder.Keep the videos coming 👍

    Using your hands, wrists and (I hate to say this) arms to drive the swing is something you see in the swings taught by Mike Malaska, Larry Rinker (for "upper core" players) and others, and it certainly has its advantages for certain types of players. The "right-hand dominant" idea actually also appears in other guises; for example, Monte Scheinblum's "no cast" drill uses just the right arm, and I believe the reason it works is that what it ALSO does is force you to get the right-side (for a right-handed golfer) around, forward and through the ball. So you THINK "right-hand" dominant but it's ALSO "right-side active and forward". Unfortunately, when I try to do right-hand dominant my right hand/arm tends to outpace my left hand/arm and collapses my "Y" and snaps my wrists through early. But I'm working on it. :)

      I think this is a fundamental component to the golf swing.

    A swing coach told me "the Golden Rule" re: arm action: left arm-hand for control , right arm- hand for speed". It makes sense if you thing about the back of left hand at impact and on downswing using tennis racket action for right hand.

    I've been working on this is the living room with some foam balls and it's a great drill. I never really used my right side but once I started it completely changed things. I was able to recreate this with the "golf grip" training aid to give me right hand control and a thick winter glove. Once you get it down you can add the left arm back in to really manipulate ball flights.

    im so happy i found this video,i just realised ive been trying to hit balls to their furthest distance purely with the idea of keeping left arm connected to your body(which it should be by the way) and letting the shoulder rotation let that clubhead whack the ball out there. I never even used my right arm just rotation. Just had a few swings on the lawn and bringing the right arm into the swing once again feels like ive got my old power back thank you be better golf

    This is awesome. Glad I found this video as I have the same theory. My miss is a pull which has more to do with my right shoulder. When I experiment with just my right arm there's no chance of a pull as my mechanics instinctively shallow the shaft.

    Enjoying the videos. I seen the one on tipping the club with Mike as well. Michael Breed did one on "Stop slicing and hit power draws" that hits the nail on the head. He goes thru pull left and push right hands. Also shows how "pulling" will keep your clubface open. You have good information here. Good to hear different ways of solving issues, with all supporting the same fix. Good job.

    Bobby Jones said you dont have a "swing" unless you take the club back with the lead arm and lead side. He was a big believer and never losing the tension up the left side therefore you should be pulling the club through rather than pushing with the trail side. He warned that unless you really know what your doing with an "active" trail hand you'll end up with a hook.

    If you hit a fade you may want to hold the face square with left arm for right-handers and right arm for left-handers....but I agree with Tony L. for clubhead speed you need to use your dominant throwing arm.

    I listened to multiple teachers say light grip pressure, left arm leads and all this stuff. I think it works for some but totally screws half the others up. Look at Bobby Jones, his swing is flowing around his body, with very light grip pressure, but Ben Hogan goes back a makes a aggressive body turn, he has to have alot of pressure in his right hand to control the club. If I try the light grip pressure I get flippy and the club head passes my hands, but if I grip it a little tighter with my right my body rotates and my club follows better shallowing the shaft with more forward shaft lean. The light pressure works great on half swing shots off of tight lies because I use the bounce better but it does nothing for full swing shots.

      The trail hand doesn't need to be "gripping" the club in order for it's lever to furnish power at/through impact. Just lightly resting on it is all that's needed. Couples' hand coming off the club is merely a testament to his light grip and relaxed arm muscles.

    IMHO this is key possibly the most important aspect to an easy powerful swing.
    Pull or throw, its 100% better for me to throw.
    Try it out before you knock it, you will see some additional power and control, takes time to iron out the sequence and setup but its worth it.

    I'm a natural righty but play golf left handed. My tendency is to pull hard with my right arm and shoulder. I get a sore right shoulder after playing or hitting a lot of golf balls. When I focus on using more of my left arm I hit better shots and don't experience the pain in the right shoulder. Hogan was quoted to have said "I wish I had three right arms". I'm convinced that the trail arm needs to feel as if it's throwing the club through impact to the finish.

    • @mrpriceisright
      @mrpriceisright 7 лет назад

      Interesting. I believe it was "3 right hands" but I think that was in the context that he knew his lead wrist would be firm and facing the target through impact. It was his lead arm and (raised) wrist that guaranteed both a fade and accurately controlled direction. When my swing is on, it feels like the trail hand is cutting the legs off the ball so to speak, while the lead arm is swinging the club on track to the target.

    Finally come across a video that supports my theory. However, I’m not sure that this action has to be the same for everyone obviously. Personally by leading back with my right arm it actually helps my plane positions on backswing (more upright position as opposed to flat and allowing my left arm to stay under) but importantly it helps with my lag by allowing my focus being on right arm completing swing. (You notice that teachers talk about right arm coming in bent at bottom of swing and then straightening just after impact). Getting back to my back swing, playing partners tell me how straight my left arm is at top of my swing but the truth be told I’m not even thinking about this. It happens involuntarily probably due to proper rotation and keeping everything connected. I’ve never hit the ball straighter and longer on drives like I do with right arm dominance. Probably more important is it tends to take my arms out of the swing and allows my body to initiated downswing. I’m a once a week golfer and unfortunately struggle with less full shots and putting 😂 I’m not bull shitting but I have never hit 530 or 540 yard par fives in 2 like I have with this method! Like all swings, alignment then becomes our enemy 😆

  • @kyus1974
    @kyus1974 3 года назад

    Alot of people are obsessed with swinging around, when really the lead arm stays straight while the trail arm bends then pushes. The rotation comes from the pressure shift from the ground which if done correctly rotates the hips. Shoulders are pulled through by the releasing of the clubhead through impact. Watch pro golfers from down the line and you will notice that from the top they drop their hands and then straighten the trail arm and push, same move in baseball.

    I started hitting chips around the green collecting many balls in a practice area using my right. Didn't think much, after I would get disgusted in real rounds, started walking up and just hitting it to the hole, in anger. Then I started getting amazingly closer every single time with one arm. 3 days ago hit 3 pitches from 30-40 off the green to a foot. Then in an up/side hit lie 6 in above my feet hit a 7 iron like 165 with one arm like a bullet. The right is a big part of my swing, use momentum and tempo just better.

  • @teddyzamba1396
    @teddyzamba1396 2 года назад

    Ultimately, it comes down to tempo, and your lead arm is the lever, it controls the plane, clubface and bottom of the swing. So, from a perspective of physics should control your swing. Now, you can play golf like tennis, but it is more difficult, and it's more difficult because you're effecting all of the above and goes counter to the physics of the swing.

    The one thing you need to do is use a longer club like a 3 wood or driver when demonstrating a swing. I found that clubs from a 6 iron on down are a lot more forgiving on a bad swing.

    • @BEBETTERGOLF
      @BEBETTERGOLF  7 лет назад +4

      +Cookie Golf yes, i do. It has to do with your grip at set up but either way that is something that happens not something to do. I was super into the golfing machine years ago and they preach a flat left wrist. That happens in good players but average players will not get any better by trying to manufacture that position. It's all about sequence.

    Ever hit a smash bag to train your swing? It’s the exact same motion as cutting down a tree with an axe. Close your eyes and slowly swing the club like it was an axe into an imaginary tree trunk, say, about a foot off the ground. If you do it slow enough, striking the tree trunk, you will notice that the only muscles that are active are those of the right arm and hand. You don’t use the left arm, it rides along. You don’t twist the hips: any turn of the body is in response to the arm swing. You don’t consciously shift weight. If you’re in touch with your body, you realize that the golf swing is, indeed, a right arm dominant motion. If you swung a club like you were cutting down a tree, you would look like a pro at impact.

    • @vicreichle2931

      Exactly! if all your weight is in your left side you will hit with your right hand and the "body motions" are simply response to the momentum of hitting.

    I use my right arm to control my Driver. At the top of the swing I throw the right arm straight back and let the momentum carry me through the swing. Throwing it backwards keeps me from coming over the top. I gain about 40 extra yards doing this than when I use my left. Is this the right feeling?

    Specifically..... Ben Hogan clearly stated that the LEFT ARM is the steering wheel and the RIGHT ARM is the accelerator.... and thats where his famous statement of...."....three right arms comes from". The left side must be strong enough to steer.... but specifically its NOT the Left Hand.....its the left forearm and left upper chest...... He actually stated that the weakest side must be strengthened to balance the other and that you do not want a right side that overtakes the left supinated wrist.

    Great video...very timely. I've been going back and forth with Tony via email on this - if anything, my problem with the left arm is even worse. It has become second nature for me to lock the left arm going back...it's hard for me to "break" it. It causes the shaft to tip over at the top from the tension; I"ve been working for over a year to get rid of that. Finally, it seems if I really work at "softening" the arms, particularly the left, I get rid of the tipover at the top. Still have an issue with spinning out too quickly in general with the upper body, but it's getting there.

    Some people play right handed but are left hand dominant. Consequeltly, they pull with their left hand; vice versa, the RH side dominant people will pull with their right arm. The very same applies to left handed people. I am a right handed person for anything I do with one hand and become left handed the moment I do something that required both hands. I am right eye dominant therefore right side dominant and my RH side pulls the clubs down to the ball. My take on this is :'' There is one ''theory'' of the golf swing, but there are as many golf swings out there as there are people swinging !''

    Not sure I agree with the author of the video on this one.
    I think we are all different and if we choose to lead the swing with the right arm, the left arm or combined is a matter of taste and what works for you.
    For me personally if I try to run the show with the right arm, then my dominant right hand tends to jank on the shaft and I get over the top. Also, the left arm is the strong one for me in the golfswing since it controls the wrist cock and if my left arm is the dominant one it's alot easier for me to keep the club outside the hands in the first part of the swing.
    Also, the power in the swing comes from the sum of all the torque ALL muscles, both left side and right side combined can contribute to the golf swing. I agree that in golf instruction the right side is a bit forgotten and there is plenty of room to get more power in the swing by using both sides correctly. In the end it's a two handed game.
    Lastly, the "proof" of the dominant right hand with the very impressive one-handed golfer also seems a bit random. What if he had no right arm and instead a left arm. Would you be sure he would swing from the left in that instance? It seems more that swinging with one arm gives this impressive person a more smooth swing and less room for yanking.
    I really like your videos BE BETTER GOLF but this one gave me the bitter taste of you selling the reactionary golf product.
    I'm not saying that's a bad thing if you admitted that's the case, I've watched to a lot of Tony Luczak's (appologies if the spelling is wrong) videos and he has alot of good things to say.

    i don't know if i agree with this philosophy, I've watched a ton of your vlogs and time after time i don't see you completing your swings. Even at 14:28 on your demo swing to sell this philosophy it looks like you're deceling at impact, and you didn't finish the swing. I mean you can play golf that way for sure if you practice like that and dedicate enough time to it, I just think you are leaving yards on the table especially with longer clubs where you need a bigger turn. Also it kind of feels like you are ignoring the importance of the left side, especially at the beginning of the downswing. I know for me personally when my right arm comes into play to much my spin rates go off the charts, and i come into the ball steep as all can be. I also get stuck getting through the ball like you do and I have a difficult time finishing my swing. I will concede that there could be a few additional reasons for that such as getting quick at the top and not getting that separation from my hips and shoulders to create the lag needed to generate power. This is meant to be constructive, I'm not on here trying to start ww3. Keep up the passion bro.

      shibbyshibbywhat Most amateurs gain yards by hitting the middle of the face more often. It is a matter of making their 7I carry 155 or 165. In my opinion what you describe is needed to hit it longer than 175. When my swing looks "best" by common positions I hit either awesome or awful shots. When I get my trail side working, the swing feels shorter and "wrong" but I can easily stay on the course and hit it a fair distance. What do you think?

    • @shibbyshibbywhat
      @shibbyshibbywhat 7 лет назад +2

      I'd agree with this, I have this opinion as a person who went from a +2 to a 2 when I started getting to much right arm/right side in my swing. Par 5's were no longer reachable, and i was carrying my longer irons 10-15 yards less, but I was keeping it on the course a little bit better, it just gets harder to score on 7000 yard tracks if you are only hitting it 250-260ish off the tee.

      shibbyshibbywhat Tony Luczack promotes and underhand swing that might not fit you biomechanically. You should check EA Tischler or Mike Austin, who definitely have a more "to each his own" swing according to the individuals biomechanics. This underhand motion Tony promotes just happens to be 1/3 delivery manners that both Austin and Tischler promote.

      +shibbyshibbywhat - I'm the same. If I employed the rightside-dominant approach for all the game I'd lose too much yardage (and more wear and tear physically after a while). The answer is to actually use both techniques.. use the right-hand dominant swing for wedges (130 in) and short game etc; a good example of this is Rory McIlroy - notice how he uses a shortened abbreviated (righthand only) wedge approach shot. Its noticeable how different it is to his 'normal' (left/right balanced) swing which has a completed follow-through..

    John has tremoundous rotation, balance, and Timing to go along with his violently controlled wrist snap at impact...I'm sure he wasnt using a long toothpick with a grip on it when developed that swing.
    His clubs are heavy and his grip is light, almost to the point of the club flying out of hands during the top of his overextended backswing....Tell me how he gets back to impact while reclutching the club with his left hand.

    I think if you let your dominant arm take over you end up guiding and throwing the club, and your slow motion video proves it. You talk about the catapult. The right hand is behind the catapult to stabilize, the left is the power. Try and hit it hard with just your right and I bet you chunk the shit out of it. Pulling with your left keeps the club in front of you, giving you a good turn. Every tour pro has a high left shoulder, and a cupped right wrist coming into impact. That contradicts your theory. The only thing the right hand can do is push... Its behing the leading side. It only makes sense to lead with the left side. Take if from a right hand dominant former flipper. Using hogan as an example doesn't sell me. Tour pros are not like us. They can get the club on the ball no matter what. I guess we all have diffrent feels and we do what works. Just my .02...

I was cranking as hard as possible pulling with my left and could only go 100 yards. And when I started keeping all the power in the right hand with ease the ball was going 150-200 yards with less effort.

    "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. So if you pull back the right upper quadrant of you torso with you shoulders arms and hands your left side must push forward in an equal manner. So a person without the use his left hand on the take away needs to pull back the club with his right upper quadrant to complete backswing and then push forward on his downswing which then causes his lead side upper quadrant to pull backward to the finish. Pulling the club back with just the right arm and then 'pulling' it forward would accomplish a nothing golf swing unless one had muscles in the forearms like Popeye the Sailor to create an opposite and equal reaction . If you argue the opposite to be true it's like the old saying: Are the wheels of a car going forward or backwards? The key to any great golf swing; wether you start with pulling back with the right side or the pushing back with the lead side; is to stay connected to both. Thanks for reading

    It's a two arm game. The left starting to power down to the left side pivot, then the right side powering thru. That's your 'lag', right hand holding off till the left arm powers down, then right arm forcing thru. Problem your describing with yanking left side is because your pulling with hands. It's forearm muscles that are dominant and hands just hold the club, hence why Malaska says hands should be 'quiet'. Check out Henrik Stinson slo mo and you'll see it's all forearm power and control.
