For those who know Kuwabara's character history you have to know why it pretty much hits him hardest. His parents weren't around, he was pretty much taken care of by his older sister for most of his life, he wasn't that smart or good in school and didn't have many friends so if you think about it, Yusuke the closest thing he had to a brother 😥 despite always getting into fist fights that he came up short on
Never looked at it like that before. I mostly saw it as Yusuke realizing even his rival would have missed him if he stayed dead. But now that you mention it that makes sense.
You forgot the best part, where his homeroom teacher says he can't bring himself to respect Yusuke's act of selflessness and bravery. Despite how noble it is to save a child that (everyone at the wake is assuming) would have been killed by that reckless driver, Yusuke's life was lost. All that wasted potential, because the homeroom teacher knew deep down, Yusuke was a good kid.
Seeing him deal with all 5 stages of grief at the same time actually makes him even more awesome than he would be if he only dealt with them one at a time.
Fighting Yusuke gave him purpose in life, without Yusuke there to fight him, he has no purpose anymore. Kind of a bizarre reason to mourn the loss of someone, its almost like stockholm syndrome in a way.

One of my oldest friends just passed away this weekend from complications brought on by Crohn's. There was two things we loved to do, play video games (he was a machine at Smash Bros. & Mario Kart) & watch anime. Yu Yu Hakusho was a favorite amongst us and Kuwabara was our favorite character. This scene was always my personal favorite scene because despite him being a comic relief character, Chris Sabat really sells his screams of agony only a friend could. I can't make it through this clip anymore. I never thought I'd have to relive it IRL. RIP, Johannes.
In Japan people view each other with more comradeship than in America (depending on where you go obviously). There are a lot of anime in Japan that focus on friendship and the connections people make with each other even if it's not the whole focus

There's a reason Takenaka was one of the few Faculty members that both Yusuke & Kuwabara respected. He genuinely cared about his students and wanted them all to succeed, even the delinquents and troublemakers like Yusuke & Kuwabara. Just look at how torn up he was over Yusuke's death, he almost acted like he'd lost his own son.

Even one of the teachers had some respect for Kuwabara because of his... well, honor. (He truly had some honor for himself as well as for Yusuke)

Who am I gonna fight..." losing 2 of my best friends, hurts everytime I hear it 😢 and for those saying he didn't have anybody kuwabara had a whole group of people he looked after (a gang if you would) this death affected him bc he fought Yusuke for years and never won, thinking Yusuke was too tough to die. Not to mention Yusuke was the closest thing kuwabara had to being somewhat identical to him a troubled youth that likes to fight that's why he said who am I gonna fight. Yusuke was he's only challenge and this point and time he was gone
I do like how this was changed from the manga, where it was played as a joke. Instead, you really get to see how it's not as much about Kuwabara's machismo as he's pretending and he actually is just sad to lose the closest thing he had to a best friend.

He might not be the best fighter, but the fact that he held his own in the dark tournament proves he's not just some luck of the draw player and being the only true human in the group fighting.
And this scene that foreshadowed how loyal and special Kuribara would be in the series going forward. We barely had a scene with him in this first episode, and even before he became a Spirit world ally along side Yusuke and the eventual growing cast, you can feel how much the green uniform punk meant to him. Even at a point when they weren’t technically friends yet, wow. Chris Salbat really poured his heart and soul in his performance with this loyal goofball of a street fighter. Definitely one of Funimation’s first S tier English dubs, and this was as they were still recording their OG dub of DBZ in house I believe too

To my knowledge, only 1 Anime has ever hinted at what happens after their death. That is Reincarnated as a Slime. His friend went to Rimiru's home, and dunked the pc in the bath to fry and destroy it.
What's crazy is I had a dream just like this I died and I was floating above my funeral seeing my dead body seeing my family members crying and sobbing that I'm dead it made me realize that I am loved and people would absolutely be devastated if I died when I woke up I started crying hard it made me happy to know people would feel that way about me ♥️

In a way, both scenes still hit hard. Still brings me to tears. I had a similar friendship with my best friend who passed on 2 years ago. Had a falling out but we made peace before his untimely passing 😭 I feel Kuwabara's pain with this scene.
She actually mentions it outright later in the series. Despite all the trouble he gets her in, his immaturity, his inability to interact with other people with normal emotions, etc.,...he is the only person that sees her for who she really is. Everyone else sees a good student, class representative, daughter of a restaurant owner, etc. Yusuke sees Keiko.
They were both likely childhood friends. Maybe there's a hint that Keiko knows about Yusuke's rough childhood growing up. Yusuke on the other hand... yeah, sure he's a complete hothead and quite ignorant/arrogant at certain times, but he truly cares about her despite being neglectful and mistreating her at certain times. He isn't truly malicious towards her; heck, if you look at it, Yusuke has never acted like a perv towards other girls except for Keiko mainly because deep down, Yusuke cares about her but doesn't know how to process it growing up.

In a way, both scenes still hit hard. Still brings me to tears. I had a similar friendship with my best friend who passed on 2 years ago. Had a falling out but we made peace before his untimely passing 😭 I feel Kuwabara's pain with this scene.

Why does keiko like yusuke that much?
Well, they grew up together for one thing.
She actually mentions it outright later in the series. Despite all the trouble he gets her in, his immaturity, his inability to interact with other people with normal emotions, etc.,...he is the only person that sees her for who she really is.
Everyone else sees a good student, class representative, daughter of a restaurant owner, etc. Yusuke sees Keiko.
She understands him more than anyone else!
They were both likely childhood friends. Maybe there's a hint that Keiko knows about Yusuke's rough childhood growing up.
Yusuke on the other hand... yeah, sure he's a complete hothead and quite ignorant/arrogant at certain times, but he truly cares about her despite being neglectful and mistreating her at certain times. He isn't truly malicious towards her; heck, if you look at it, Yusuke has never acted like a perv towards other girls except for Keiko mainly because deep down, Yusuke cares about her but doesn't know how to process it growing up.

The English dub in India was different from this one....Yusuke's voice was a lot sharper/raspier and he was totally rude and uncouth!
