And this scene that foreshadowed how loyal and special Kuribara would be in the series going forward. We barely had a scene with him in this first episode, and even before he became a Spirit world ally along side Yusuke and the eventual growing cast, you can feel how much the green uniform punk meant to him. Even at a point when they weren’t technically friends yet, wow. Chris Salbat really poured his heart and soul in his performance with this loyal goofball of a street fighter. Definitely one of Funimation’s first S tier English dubs, and this was as they were still recording their OG dub of DBZ in house I believe too

I do like how this was changed from the manga, where it was played as a joke. Instead, you really get to see how it's not as much about Kuwabara's machismo as he's pretending and he actually is just sad to lose the closest thing he had to a best friend.

One of my oldest friends just passed away this weekend from complications brought on by Crohn's. There was two things we loved to do, play video games (he was a machine at Smash Bros. & Mario Kart) & watch anime. Yu Yu Hakusho was a favorite amongst us and Kuwabara was our favorite character. This scene was always my personal favorite scene because despite him being a comic relief character, Chris Sabat really sells his screams of agony only a friend could. I can't make it through this clip anymore. I never thought I'd have to relive it IRL. RIP, Johannes.

Chris Sabat is a legend for how well he did kuwabara’s voice in the dub. His performance here is absolutely incredible. This is the best English dub of all time. Even better than cowboy bebop’s English dub or beserk 1997’s dub.

Who am I gonna fight..." losing 2 of my best friends, hurts everytime I hear it 😢 and for those saying he didn't have anybody kuwabara had a whole group of people he looked after (a gang if you would) this death affected him bc he fought Yusuke for years and never won, thinking Yusuke was too tough to die. Not to mention Yusuke was the closest thing kuwabara had to being somewhat identical to him a troubled youth that likes to fight that's why he said who am I gonna fight. Yusuke was he's only challenge and this point and time he was gone

What's sad is that people couldn't see the genius writing behind kuwabara's character back in the day. They were blinded by their love for kurama and hiei because they had k-pop hugger mindsets.
