If they released a quick webcomic through twitter, insta, tumblr, etc. like how Falseknees or shencomix does they'd fit right in with the internet. They already have dolls that they could sell of the characters and people love weird looking plushies and blorbos like the plushies itemLabel has. They have so much potential for a comeback.
There was multiple Uglydoll comic books that came out, with each story in those books being done by a different artist. The stories may not really be cannon, but most artists did well with sticking to the characters (unlike the movie).
I still have mine and got one of the updated ones from when the movie was released. Almost started crying when I found him and have been collecting whatever ice bat stuff I can.

I had an existential crisis over the definiton of ugly, and now over 4 years later i strive to make my art as ugly as possible, and to see the beauty in what society deems ugly. Ended up meeting one of the most toxic people of my life, as well as seeing horrific discourse surrounding Icebat Vs Lucky Bat. Good times! Should be noted that Moxy in the movie was another uglydoll named "Little Miss Gorgeous", they just changed her name for the movie.
The only thing I remember from this movie is Lou saying something along the lines of "I will run the gauntlet with you!" and some random person in the background yelling "I wanna run YOUR gauntlet, Lou!"
Okay so I think you’d really like big city greens it’s still going and it’s a more modern Disney show but it has a very one-liner joke style that’s really surprising along with some fun characters! I think you’d love Tilly and the Grandma!
I mean, as Athena brought up, they are disproportionate stuffed animals that somehow came off the same production line as a plastic fashion doll line. So, yeah, forget being ugly, they were literal errors in the system. The movie would have been more sincere if their opposition were teddy bears and other plushies instead of human dolls with a wholly different materials. Like, I don't know how I'd react if a band of nude lifeforms with chalky-gelatinous flesh and no joints despite having skeletons came out of the woods and claimed to be fellow himans.
My interpretation was as follows: Ox was different, imperfect and because he didn't fit the Institute's mold, he was labeled as "ugly" Everyone else was doctor-model/artist-model, etc, doll, and Ox thought "I'm an ugly-doll" That was his designation that he carried over Ugly-ville. The Perfect Dolls were put under the regime of an egocentric doll that failed to truly understand the task a doll has. Lou said "a doll must look like this to be a children's doll", when all along the truth is: "a doll must be like this (a good person) to be a children's doll)" So, I think the messages are: it isn't your looks that give you worth, but your actions And People will label you ugly, but that isn't the truth.
My theory is that Uglytown is just the Otherworld from Coraline. After the other mother died, all the dolls she made came to life and took over. It certainly explains the moon.
the Moxy thing is also weird because she was originally designed to be Ox's sister! Reusing her character to retcon Ox no longer having a sister always made me so sad...this video was great!! Uglydolls is something I'm still super into even now as an adult, so thanks so much for taking the time to get into the nitty gritty!
I remember reading somewhere that movie Moxy’s design is actually from a different existing UglyDoll called “Gorgeous” but they gave her a totally different one’s name for some reason. My guess is it had something to do with the Poppy similarities since Trolls was so popular and wanting a more “main character” sounding name 🤔

However, I didn't remember anything that actually happened in the movie because I was on the verge of a mental breakdown when I watched it and was sent to a psych ward a few months later. So this was a good memory refresher I guess 😂
Uglydoll and the Ugly Guides were the pinnacle of my childhood. I loved the goofy celebrations of crappy mundanity in the writing, and the overall comedic tone influenced me significantly. I collected tons of the dolls, and still have several, and I completely disavowed the movie once I learned how little it had to do with the Uglyverse as written in the doll tags and books.

Musical Hell just posted a review of the Uglydolls Movie a couple of weeks ago and she addressed the issues that the movie itself has but also said that with a few more script changes the movie had the potential to be pretty good. I actually said in one of the comments that the movie should have had the human dolls be divided by two groups which are the Perfects and Imperfects. The Imperfects have various flaws such as two right hands or bad wigs/hair rooting and the Perfects don’t like to associate with them because they think that the Imperfects are too weird to hang with them and they make the Imperfects do all of the work. The Imperfects aren’t too happy about being made to be the labor but they aren’t miserable and they don’t hate the Perfects and want to be accepted by them. In comes the Ugly Dolls who unite both groups by organizing activities where they all have fun with each other and teach the lesson that you can have fun with those different from you if you ignore the differences.

Random memory that came to me while watching this, I think my 5th grade language arts teach had either the ugly dolls or the fuggler dolls in this little cozy reading corner and they creeped me the heck out. I remember her taking such care and pride of those dolls and encouraged that if you were reading in the cozy corner, you'd grab one as a little reading buddy. So I just read at my desk to avoid the dolls with teeth.
i remember getting an Ox plush from the thrift store with the tongue and its only other eye gone. I didn't think of it much until my mom got a mini Ox dog toy for my dog, and right then and there i just looked at my Ox comparing mine and the new mini one side by side, wondering what adventures my Ox went on to lead to how he looked now and i almost cried at how little i cared for him compared to how much the previous owner probably cared for him for the rest of my childhood until adolescence i treated that Ox so well he may as well have been royalty
I had a ton of these plushes, and i grew up with a few of these books and i adored and still adore these weird creatures, i remember watching the movie in theaters when i was around 16 i believe(going in knowing i wasnt going to like it since it is nothing like the original source material), and one of the things that pissed me off the most minus like everything else was Ice Bat touching the ocean and the entire ocean not instantly freezing lol

I think I'm one of the few people that actually like ugly dolls before they became a movie franchise and to me, the movie destroyed everything I liked about it. I remember getting an ugly dolls book from the library at my school whenever I was in elementary school and I loved seeing your little comic about how ugly dolls originally was made by a couple who met whenever the (eventually wife) of the two came to the US from Korea to study abroad, and whenever she moved back to Korea they sent each other drawings back and forth of little creatures and then eventually she made one into a stuffed animal for him to hug during their long-distance relationship. They ended up making a company together and getting married only to completely scrap the cute and cuddly, weird aesthetic that they had for years just to sell it to a shitty mass-produced toy company. You used to only be able to find ugly dolls in specialty gift shops like beanie babies before they got popular, and the stuffed animals were really good quality and were really cute and most of them were unique because they were made in small lots. Now they're just garbage that you find in the Walmart discount bin. I just feel like they sold out and the company lost its heart. It's sad.

Random memory that came to me while watching this, I think my 5th grade language arts teach had either the ugly dolls or the fuggler dolls in this little cozy reading corner and they creeped me the heck out. I remember her taking such care and pride of those dolls and encouraged that if you were reading in the cozy corner, you'd grab one as a little reading buddy. So I just read at my desk to avoid the dolls with teeth.
The Movie UglyDolls is SO underrated. Its personally one of my favorite movies

i remember getting an Ox plush from the thrift store with the tongue and its only other eye gone. I didn't think of it much until my mom got a mini Ox dog toy for my dog, and right then and there i just looked at my Ox comparing mine and the new mini one side by side, wondering what adventures my Ox went on to lead to how he looked now and i almost cried at how little i cared for him compared to how much the previous owner probably cared for him
for the rest of my childhood until adolescence i treated that Ox so well he may as well have been royalty
So happy to be early espically because Athenas comtent has helepd me get through the rough patches in life and made the good days even better

I had a ton of these plushes, and i grew up with a few of these books and i adored and still adore these weird creatures, i remember watching the movie in theaters when i was around 16 i believe(going in knowing i wasnt going to like it since it is nothing like the original source material), and one of the things that pissed me off the most minus like everything else was Ice Bat touching the ocean and the entire ocean not instantly freezing lol

I think I'm one of the few people that actually like ugly dolls before they became a movie franchise and to me, the movie destroyed everything I liked about it. I remember getting an ugly dolls book from the library at my school whenever I was in elementary school and I loved seeing your little comic about how ugly dolls originally was made by a couple who met whenever the (eventually wife) of the two came to the US from Korea to study abroad, and whenever she moved back to Korea they sent each other drawings back and forth of little creatures and then eventually she made one into a stuffed animal for him to hug during their long-distance relationship. They ended up making a company together and getting married only to completely scrap the cute and cuddly, weird aesthetic that they had for years just to sell it to a shitty mass-produced toy company. You used to only be able to find ugly dolls in specialty gift shops like beanie babies before they got popular, and the stuffed animals were really good quality and were really cute and most of them were unique because they were made in small lots. Now they're just garbage that you find in the Walmart discount bin. I just feel like they sold out and the company lost its heart. It's sad.
The UglyDolls movie is super underrated, I'm glad to see you enjoyed it. I'm a sucker for a movie with good music, and the music in the movie was so good, I listened to it a lot.

FUGGLERS!!!!!! I love Fugglers so much! I totally understand your reaction to them, but I think they’re adorable. I have a collection of around…35 - 40? I honestly don’t know exactly, I have a lot of them. I have a few of the little Fuggler-head keychains as well as some of the tiny little baby fuggler keychains. Seeing a youtuber I love talk about them was such a surprise!

It's hello kitty wearing a Wage onesie and i called her my Guard Dog because she looks so freaky (affectionate) so she can scare away any monsters on my bed that wanted to get to all the plushies that i wasn't actively hugging and sleeping with (I had them all on rotation except for her) So I'm gonna watch this video with her. Also i have VERY strong opinions on the movie and i hope you agree with me on them i will edit my comment when i get to that part of the video.
Edit after watching: YES! The movie wasn't original in any way but it was still fun and i don't get why people hated it so bad. I don't like it because of how clean it felt compared to the grit of the original like you said. I think it was gross how they made the MC cute instead of ugly. Very hypocritical and confusing like you said. Good opinions as always and i am very scared for the shipping video coming up 😅💕
