If Chelsea had been set up as Ruby's only friend, or at least part of her friend group, they could have pulled a Garak and it could have worked _so well._
That, and having her stated motive for finding the Trident being specifically _to destroy it,_ which would be more believable.
Imagine: Ruby finally gets the Trident, bringing it to Chelsea, who has been talking up how great everything is going to be once she gets ahold of it and can use her peoples' secret knowledge to destroy it. Chelsea can hardly believe she's actually holding the thing, and Ruby asks if she can watch it be destroyed, or if the secret is too important to keep. Chelsea gives her a disgusted look, Ruby apologizes profusely, thinking she's pushed too far, but Chelsea begins to rant.
"It's been so long. Fifteen long, _excruciating_ years, living on _land_ like some sort of stinking _mammal,_ playing _friends_ with a *filthy Kraken.* The torture I've had to endure... this will make it _all_ worth it."
      *Then* she goes pure evil.

@@magetsalive5162I don’t know. That would still be a lame twist villain like Hans. In my opinion they should make the Trident something that can control the oceans but also enhances the emotions and will of those who touch it. Chelsea’s anger at Krakens that she tries to suppress manifests when she touches it and Ruby has to fight her to save her friend.

But then again, "Luca" literally had that exact ability as a sea monster teenager that could turn into a human as well. Fr. Chelsea had the potential to be an extremely lovable, complex character. They made her such a bland bad guy. Imagine if she had actual moral complexity, maybe she genuinely liked hanging out with ruby and was normally a good person, but under the circumstances of mermaids and krakens not getting along, she makes morally wrong decisions despite the guilt. They could of made the movie have a moral like “there is good and bad on every side of every war” and “don’t generalize a group of people over something they cannot control” That would be amazing. But no, they had to go with a “kraken misunderstood and never do bad and mermaid evil always and never do good” plot line. Literally the moral of this story is “lying bad. And if you are quirky you are probably misunderstood and amazing and sometimes other types of people are just evil because they have something about them they cannot control and you need to defeat them because you’re quirky”.

This movie should have had Ruby and Chelsea be actual friends. That would have been actually subversive. Even if Chelsea was evil, it would have been cool if Chelsea wanted Ruby to be evil with her to destroy the town. Ruby has to fight her only friend to save innocents. That would be compelling, subversive, and interesting. Maybe have the trident corrupt anyone who touches it unless they have a strong enough emotional intelligence so Ruby had to get the trident from Chelsea to save the town AND her friend. Just my thoughts.

    • @moon4236
      @moon4236 Год назад +167

Wait having Chelsea be trying to corrupt Ruby only for Ruby to end up redeeming her sounds interesting. You could establish them as having been friends for years and them always getting into trouble together mostly because of Chelsea. Maybe it started like in the movie but Chelsea ends up getting too attached to Ruby which makes her try to make her evil realises that she can't so she convinces Ruby to look for the trident with the excuse of destroying it in a desperate attempt to make it corrupt Ruby (so maybe Ruby holds onto it for some time) but it doesn't work. Then Chelsea eventually realises she's doesn't want to be evil, has a crisis because her mother expects her to be evil (let's say she really is Nerissa's daughter in this version) gets the trident which corrupts her and then it's saved at the end (maybe her evil mom fights too)

Not many kids movies touch up on this, but "beautiful" girls do get bullied as well, at least from what I've seen.

What if the FIRST half was Chelsea and Ruby finding the Trident, but after finding it Chelsea gets Ruby to join her and actually manages to destroy the Kraken kingdom. The second half would then be this power imbalance/toxic friendship between the two, where Ruby has to not only overcome, but defeat Chelsea before she gains total domination over land as well or something like that. In the end, it would be her family that would help her escape Chelsea, exponential formula the Trident, etc etc, family wins woohoo

    1) Have Ruby not be blue as a human. Be humanesque like Chelsea.
    2) Make it be about Chelsea and Ruby, princesses of their warring nations, using their friendship to overcome generations long animosity and fighting. Instead of making Chelsea the boo twist villain. It would've been a nice twist on the 'popular mean girl' trope to be 'popular mean girl apeears mean initially but the reality is she's popular because she's just a very honest girl who likes to have fun and Ruby has a lot of insecurities before realising they can be friends despite their differences."

Yeah, a big disappointment for me is that the trailer made it look like the whole movie would be centered around Ruby and Chelsie's relationship.
And there could have been something legit interesting and wholesome there, I mean... They are both sea creatures. Pretending to be humans and having to hide their true selves on land. Both seem to be living a sort of double life. They should be able to really relate to each other in a special way, and it could have been really interesting.
But then the entire first half of the movie is wasted on.... absolutely nothing. Chelsie was only introduced halfway through the movie when the trailer and poster made it look like she would be featured more. And because of her late introduction the development she got, and her relationship with Ruby was extremely minimal and surface-deep. And even after Chelsie's introduction Ruby spends more time on a training montage than spending time with Chelsie!
Again... We could have done so much in how these two could relate to each other in ways they didn't realize. Chelsie could talk about how everybody assumes she's such a goodie good and nice because of her looks, and she has to always keep up this pretend to play her role. But really she's very chaotic.
And Ruby could talk about how if people saw her true form, they assumed she was a monster, and she is perceived as weirdo due to her awkwardness, but really she just wants to help people and is really nice.
We could have Chelsie's whole arch of having been given that role as a villain by her mom, but now by relating to Ruby and talking about the roles given to her, wants to actually form her own role and break free.... There was so much potential for something sweet.
Also I have to say, if Dreamworks REALLY wanted to make a movie that poked fun of "The Little Mermaid." in an attempt to capitalize... They should purchase the rights to the webcomic. "The little Trash Maid." which is an ADORABLE comic, about a little mermaid parody living in a modern ocean filled with trash and how she adapts to all of this trash, even wearing a seven-Eleven bag as a bra. That movie would make a billion dollars, I am just betting. It is adorable, and it already has a message people would want to support about trash in the ocean.

I would have loved if they used the trailers to set up Chelsea as the villain only to twist it in the movie. Hear me out:
Maybe the grandma was actually Narissa who was pretending to be a kraken to gain knowledge about Ruby's kingdom. She sets up Chelsea to be the bad guy, Ruby and her fall out so Ruby has to be on her own and think for her own for a bit.
Feeling lost, she goes to her grandma for advice and instead of Chelsea, Grandma floats the idea of using the trident to symbolise peace and unity between both kingdoms. This begins her training Ruby to retrieve the trident (maybe by lying and saying the trident is too powerful for someone her age to yield?) and subtle manipulations to make sure Ruby doesn't figure out who she really is.
Skipping forward, at the climax of the film, Grandma reveals the betrayal, takes the trident and blasts Ruby away. In classic DW fashion, Chelsea could show up in mermaid form at Ruby's lowest point to encourage her and after they make up, they fight Narissa TOGETHER.
Ruby's Mum could still show up to help, they could still do the bit where they break the trident and defeat Narissa but the end could be something that shows Ruby and Chelsea's friendship helping to begin bringing the two kingdoms together.
Have a lot of ideas for how this film could have gone but this comment is way long already. But it could have been so much more ambitious than it was.

And if they want to go even in depth, have it that Mermaids were the bad guys, but over the dacades they slowly turned good, maybe even make a reference to Little Mermaid, where Chelsea says it all started because one of their people fell in love with a human. In the case of Puss-n-Boots we see what happens when you get a competent and passionate director in charge, and the results speak for themselves. In the Ruby Gillman case... we see what happens when we just mindlessly follow a studio rather than an individual creator. Puss is an actually good story, and Ruby just feels like a soulless corporate vanity project
Sure, a studio can put out good stuff, but most of that good stuff is usually the product of a specific person or few people, not the studio itself. Once that talent leaves, unless they specifically trained someone to follow in their footsteps, rarely does the studio keep making things of the same level or quality.

Specially with Chelsea, we knew she was going to be the main villain, but we desperately hoped to see some redemption arc or at least a GOOD EXPLANATION ON WHY SHE IS BAD, the plot ended being so vain and having such poor logic, we really felt like we wasted our time.
Like, ok, the movie has some cool visuals and yeah we liked the dinamic Chelsea and Ruby had, heck even the port city looked cool... I wish they made a better movie.

I thought it was hilarious that everyone in the town just thinks canadians look like aliens. But the movie was like so busy and stuffed to the brim with shallow lore and unfinished characters beats. It was pretty though, and the mermaid made me laugh so much for some reason.
Id give it like a 4/10
I thought the movie was gonna be about two races fighting underwater over the mcguffin. And then the mcguffin ends up on land in a highschool and each race sends up one teenager to blend in to try to steal it back amd destroy the other race. Idk why i thought that, but i wouldve liked that movie better i think

I was genuinely interested in this, due to the character designs of everyone that wasn't an npc looking human. However, when I watched the trailer and had EVERYTHING spoiled, I began to think about ways it could've been better.
I think this would've played better as a road trip film. Takes place in the same seaside town, where stories of mermaids and kraken are told as legend, however, mermaids are clearly more popular and kraken are misunderstood as disastrous. This stems from kraken just kinda being comically inept at the protector role, due to their huge, clumsy size.
Due to the quelling of sea based threats, both sides quieted down and drifted into legend, eventually just living amongst humans in plain sight. Ruby and Chelsea are the current descendants of each lineage. Ruby's the school nerd and Chelsea is the vapid mean girl. They hate each other.
Some ancient, aquatic danger confronts the town and the two set off separately to deal with it, as their lineage dictates, only to incidentally learn that each is a sea creature in hiding. Their quest is to get whatever trident to quell the threat and they basically go from hating one another to being friends over the trip to it and back.
Keep it focused on those two and whoever they meet along the way will exist as interesting side characters. Both of the mains will use their inherent skills (Ruby's intelligence, Chelsea social abilities, etc.) and impress one another, while simultaneously drawing hidden talents out of one another.
By the end, they return triumphant and use their new found skills to save the day as a team. Simple story, jazzed up with witty writing and endearing characters.
Also, I wouldn't make Chelsea "the bad one" just because she's mean and popular, that'd just be us seeing her primarily through Ruby's biased eyes as the main character.

I'll admit I didn't see too much of this movie beforehand outside of the initial trailer, but I already knew of the "mermaids are evil" plotpoint. Therefore, I was kind of on board with how the movie portrayed Chelsea as being the daughter of the mermaid queen and was expecting her to simply be a pawn of her mother who would defect at the climax of the movie after genuinely befriending Ruby. Definitely wasn't expecting her and Nerissa to be the same person, so that twist DID catch me off guard. Though it was a twist that was ultimately disappointing...
