Hey there, hi! Always wanted to make a video like this, so I decided to just go ahead and do it. While you're here, mind if you go and click LIKE? And if you aren't already, go ahead and hit that SUBSCRIBE button! It'll mean a lot for me and the channel! PS: Yes, I'm NOW aware at 7:07 about Eastern style dragons being different from Western style. Didn't know about their differences when I wrote the review so my apologies for that :) (Subtitles are also available in this video! Just click the "cc" icon!)
I agree with this video except for the dragon's design part, I agree that it's ugly BUT it's not supposed to look like a western or eastern dragon, it's supposed to look like a Southeast Asian dragon, so I was just bothered that you compared it to other culture's dragons. But again, the dragon design is still ugly
The message wasn't trust it was second chances I really wanted namaari dead along with her mother But once i saw she was alive (her mother) I realize it was about second chances the shit she said earlier doesn't matter because second chances
@@jodysgamingchannle3444 So, someone going to war against a tyrannical government that is executing people for no reason is bad? I know this isn't related to the story or movie whatsoever but I'm trying to determine if you mean unnecessary wars such as idiots fighting for religious reasons or if you mean wars in general. Regardless if the war happened because of famine or, lack of resources. While yes, the war in the movie is completely and utterly stupid, real life tends to be a bit more gray area. Sometimes wars don't have a reason, sometimes they do. Its the ones with a valid reason that are in the gray area and tend to be morally confusing.
I also really hate the message. Sisu was basically telling Raya “You can trust people” as if she doesn’t have reason to not trust Numaari. Numaari stabbed her back twice and ended up killing the last dragon but it’s Rayas fault for going from what she learned in the past. Like that’s a horrible message to teach children. Children shouldn’t be taught to trust people, even if they aren’t trustworthy
It felt like they were going for three moral lessons all in one go, causing it to get muddled. "Don't shut everyone out based on bad past experiences" is a great message, but Numaari WAS the bad experience, so Raya has understandable cause to mistrust her. "You can reach people with an open heart" and "some people are capable of change" are also great messages and are a solid approach to redemption for Numaari, but they don't have Numaari show this well enough to warrant Raya trusting her (hell, he main conflict is due to her betraying Raya AGAIN). Honestly if they'd tweaked the moment right before the second betrayal it could have been REALLY interesting. Have Sisu be a mediator between them as she almost was in the movie but, instead of Numaari betraying them outright, have both Raya and Numaari be so wary that something minor causes the situation to rapidly escalate (e.g. they agreed on no weapons but realise both brought them anyway "because I knew YOU would," or one sees the other is fidgety and assumes they're going to be cast out so begins to argue). This then leads to a conflict against Raya and Numaari that causes Sisu to be killed in the crossfire, rather than because Numaari was literally aiming an arrow at her and Raya had an understandable reaction. It shows that sometimes there's too much water under the bridge for certain people, but when they come together as a group for somebody else they reach some semblance of peace and closure.
TRUE like how is it rayas fault again!! and i felt like the movie was doing this : OH GOOD JOB NUMAARI YOUR SO GOOD FOR KILLING SISU AND LET THE MODSTERS FREE AND YOU!!! RAYA YOU BASTERD ITS YOUR FUALT THAT THIS HAPPEN " i mean like im sorry but i think its namaari to blame here
That was my big problem with it, we should teach kids to say no, if they don't like something or someone. It isn't that Raya was a stupid bias child, she was nice to Numaari and not xenophobic but then Numaari gave her a valid reason to not trust her
The most annoying scene to me is that the dad literally could have jumped with her. But he wanted to pull a sacrifice yourself for your child cliche and he got his dumbass turned into stone.
He used to be a guardian of the gem which means he must have been trained to overcome any obstacles and be strong enough in any situation. Isn't learning how to swim an essential to surviving and overcoming an obstacle?
i thought that too!! but i feel like because of his chief status it wouldn’t have been noble to bail like that, for lack of better terms. it was his duty to stay with his people and land until the very end. he probably felt guilty too and as if that’s what he needed to do, of course he didn’t want raya to pay that price
RIGHT also WHY did they have to add SNOW??? And a DESERT????? They could have just made the *entire* world tropical like South East Asia is , it's not even impossible for a world to be like that EARTH was once like that even
@@sekaranandati526 AND THEY FAILED AT LITERALLY SISU'S DESIGN. SHE LOOKS MORE OF A WESTERN DRAGON THAN SOUTHEAST ASIAN And as far I heard the VAs are mostly east asian, not southeast
I personally HATE Sisu's invocation. Like, she's a dragon, A DRAGON. For me, a dragon invocation would require a specific location and a lot of trial and error. But Raya did the invocation so easily, and it looked so rushed and boring. I literally did a monch to my lunch, and the invocation went faster than I did. Still mad about it
I never felt like there was any trust in Namaari in that last scene. I mean Namaari had two choices die or put the dragon stone back together. It wasn't selfless of her to do it, it was really the ONLY thing she could realistically do.
She is based off of a eastern dragon and not a western dragon which one looks more snake like then the other, but I don’t recall ever seeing an eastern dragon with a mane before. Edit - I meant a lion like mane sorry for not stating that beforehand and most of the dragons he was showing was of western mythology not eastern and I forgot about him showing mulan so sorry for that as well I was just stating that since some people think both types are the same when they look very different.
The visuals, main character, and idea were amazing but the message to kids of "trusting everyone even if they backstabbed you twice and killed your friend" was HORRIBLE, like, it should've been "trust is earned not given" Sisu's design was aweful and she was so unfunny. Also omg what were the dragons even there for??? Litrally none of the plot involved Sisu at all, and Sisu was the only dragon who got to speak at all, no other dragon even got a voice actor. Also the plot of just gaining random friends from each nation along the way is just an absolute ATLA ripoff. I rate this movie at max 4/10 on just the visuals
Pretty sure it wouldn't be much of a problem to rewrite Sisu's motto to "trust is earned not given" with just a few tiny changes to the story, because that dragon just doesn't really serves as anything. It could just be as well a statue of a dragon and nothing really will change that much.
I don’t mind the message of learning to give trust first, but there’s still a breaking point. It’s one thing to offer it (as her dad did at the beginning), but a completely different thing to blindly trust people like Sisu. Wanting to see the good in people is admirable, but sisu was just being stupid, and she got taken advantage of very quickly in talon. What they should have focused on was finding a middle ground: don’t let past betrayals prevent you from trusting anyone else. Raya was betrayed, and reasonably didn’t trust Namari after. But Sisu (in the only part where I liked her) saw that she was hesitant and latched onto that, trusting that she would make the right choice, which she almost did. It’s a hard line to walk, but it could’ve been done better.
Not really found all the characters boring. Especially the main character. No personality apart from I trust no one and yes I know but that does not make her anymore likeable. I hope to god. To any god that she does not become an official princess. I love the first three(/the golden trio) princesses but I think Raya is a worst role model.
I think they tried to go for an Olaf vibe w/ Sisu and they missed HORRIBLY. I know some people hate Olaf, but I think he's funny & no one can say he wasn't a hit. They definitely slapped Elsa's face on Sisu and tried to give her the personality of Olaf. Such a miss, which makes me sad because there was clearly talent in the movie, the animation is beautiful.
@@a.t3107 i totally agree!! some frozen super fans hate that he's been overcommercialized and in all the shorts, which i do wish the new Olaf Presents featured Elsa & Anna. but disney will always be commercial! i still
Ok, but the thing that made me even more angry is that the big spine guy and the talon baby didn't become a family, even after they bonded the whole journey like a father and a daughter. Sure, the spine guy was hurt from what happened to his family, but I think its weird how they never really connected them somehow after kumandra was made again
1:23 fun fact: this movie was in development during the whole “avatar craze” so makes sense Disney tried to capitalize and failed heavily (it’s literally called RAYA THE LAST DRAGON, AVATAR THE LAST AIRBENDER) And adding onto this why is the recent Disney villains forces of nature? Is Disney afraid of being offensive? (Cuz the best part of princess and the frog was the HUMAN villain and how he used the “darkness” instead of darkness for darkness sake)
Where did you read that this was in development during the avatar craze? I tried to find it but I can’t, anywhere I’ve looked says this movie was in production for 3-4 years
@@what6494 well it usually takes a few years for animation, but for Disney it only really takes a year or two at most, as the avatar craze was ending this was being teased and trailers came a year later and then it flopped (Plus if you watch raya it’s mostly just sitting and talking with the “big scenes” being mostly cgi and thus even easier to animate along with their extremely short time frames
@@MarkSamurai5 I'll be real MANY shows have names they know they're gonna change, it's like me calling my show hotdog as a place holder and then calling it FLCL to show the meme nature but also that it sounds like theres more to it
I honestly feel for anyone who thought Disney was going to really do justice in their representation of SE Asian culture. They're just trying to make that green.
They always are but it hurts when they don't even try. There were some beautiful scenes that really showed culture like with the Sisu ritual or when they mourn their loved ones with the flowers etc. But it's so horribly overshadowed by the weirdly modern dialogue, unnecessary characters (looking at you monkey squad), messy story and horrible moral.
Bro, Disney did amazing representation of others cultures like Mulan, Lilo and Stich, Moana, Encanto. It depends a lot who's involved in movie project and how professional and competent they are. My country was represent by Disney not for a movie, but for only a character (José Carioca), and we, in Brazil, we love him and find him good, being a representative of us. Like I said, it depends who's working on it, like any job
Well, it's a shit representation but it's somehow hit home. You don't know how many times SE Asian trying to stab each other in the back for the last 700 years. Mainly Thailand and Cambodia but dang. The only reason 10 south east Asian managed to united as one because America and China want all of us their bitches.
Not for Mulan and Moana. Mulan was done with too little research and too many inaccuracies. Moana was fine but ppl complained it was just a story with Polynesian theming around it. Encanto seemed to do a great job with colombian culture from what I’ve heard
The trust message in this movie is sooooooo screwed up. They make it seem like Raya is to blame for not trusting someone who has betrayed her. And had never once shown themselves to be trust worthy since then. Like bruh- the frick? It’s almost like this movie is telling you to put everything in the hands of that person who has betrayed you. And also you’re the one with a problem. Because you can’t trust them. It’s just dumb. And possibly a harmful message.
It feels like they were trying to go for a "turn the other cheek/forgiveness" kind of moral, but didn't understand that forgiveness isn't the same thing as trust.
I don't understand why Numaari was the one person she had to trust, when Raya had a whole group she learned to trust especially the scene when she put her trust into the giant guy, because she had to and because she saw his whole village being stone. like that convayed the message of trusting much better than her having to trust everyone especially someone who did not deserved it at all.
@zhengedi3859 It would have been a much better message if it was something like just because one person did something bad to you doesn't mean you you can't trust OTHER PEOPLE!
Disney: “Hey! We made a Movie set in southeast Aisa!” Asia people in the southeast: “Omg that’s amazing where can we watch it!?” Disney: “On Disney Plus+” Asia’s in the southeast: 👁👄👁
Positive qualities of the film? Looks stunning. I'm in Hong Kong and I was able to see this in theaters and the visual experience was worth the price. I also love that an animation studio as top quality as Disney took on this awesome action driven story with swords and martial arts. I'm a sucker for that kind of stuff and it was great. Negatives? The modern dialogue in this high fantasy setting really took me out of the moment. I know other fantasy movies that do this too like How to train your dragon or Aladdin but for some reason in THIS movie it really distracted me. I think it's because it was trying way harder than it needed to sound cool, what with the action one liners, and all I could think was how dated everyone was going to sound in a few years. Also I don't think that the story does a good job of supporting it's message. It was pointed out to me how hypocritical it is for Disney to put out a "take a leap of faith and trust others' message when for the past 10 years they've only given us manipulative twist villains in their animation. With many instances within this film as well showing more of the dangers of trusting others too quickly than the positives of doing so. And for me personally I'm not a big fan of 'forgiveness' storylines where it's the responsibility for the one who was hurt to get over their trauma for the sake of others. Over all, top quality visuals but the script needed some re-writes.
Thank god other people feel the same! The script was terrible, the dialogue and language used is jarring and feels distinctly out of place, and the plot and characters are so weak. I think the reason the modern North American influenced phrasing is so out of place here is because in Aladdin he's a street urchin, in How to Train Your Dragon they're a rough Viking clan, in each case they're characters who even within the context of their own worlds would not necessarily be expected to speak in a formal or eloquent manner. Genie works as well on two levels because to us he's breaking the fourth wall and making funny, Loony Tunes wacky references to the real world, and for Aladdin and the others in the world of the film Genie is this chaotic force of energy where much of what he says and manifests don't make sense, so to them a reference to the real world is passable as just more Genie nonsense. In Raya, she and Namaari are basically princesses, their parents are well spoken, so we expect them to talk in a way that makes sense in that context, and a dragon from five centuries ago is the last character we'd expect to sound modern. For the script I just wish Raya would react like a human being to literally anything. She barely spends two minutes reflecting on the loss of her father, she never talks about growing up in the apocalypse alone as a child. She never expresses guilt, she barely hints at in any way blaming herself for her part in the gem breaking or in Sisu getting shot, she just always instantly jumps to: blame Namaari, try to kill Namaari, even when the world is ending around her. When a dragon appears before her she's not in awe or overwhelmed, she reacts to the MAGICAL CREATURE no one has seen for 500 years in the same way you might react to an app that's kinda cool. And it just seems like nonsense even if you do blame Namaari to not even countenance the idea of asking if she'd like to help restore the gem and save the world. Even if you hated each other, who isn't going to be on board with saving the world, bringing back everyone everyone has lost? No one reflects on how many people have been lost, not even the guy whose entire village is gone, or the children who lost their families. The Druun scourge is practically the Thanos finger snap but it almost feels like there's no repurcussions. You're totally right about the moral messaging too, it just doesn't seem to fit the story, she doesn't have to learn a lesson so much as in the end the world is ending and there are no other options, and then they have a group hug with the woman Raya has repeatedly tried to kill in the recent past, a woman Raya has expressed nothing but anger for and blames for destroying the world in the first place. If she felt like that, as the movie keeps telling us she does, then trust or not in her mind that's still the person most responsible for like half the world getting turned to stone including Raya's beloved FATHER. The script is just terrible, it really is. Visually stunning movie though.
Totally agree with you. Especially the dialogue messed with the immersion. Like in the other movies you mentioned, it sounds modern but still fits with the rest of the world. But here they make references to things that don't make even a little bit of sense in an apocalyptic monarchy driven wasteland. The whole group project line when Sisu appeared just felt so unfitting. Where would Raya have ever done a group project like this? She's the only princess trained to fight in a world full of hate and separation. It felt like cheap humor made to make uncritical viewers think "haha ancient dragon says relatable Meme" which just made me hyperaware that Sisu is an incredibly commercialized product and not an actual character.
7:08, technically, Sisu is based on a southeast asian mythology Sea serpernt or a Water Dragon called Naga, it can shapeshift too. In the philippines, we also have a sea serpent called the bakunawa, they believed that this dragon ate the moon because it was amazed by the beauty of the moon. They believed that it's the cause of the solar eclipses
I'm glad I wasn't the only one thinking that this "dragon" design was so horrible. C'mon, that's the main thing in the whole plot, as the title states "Raya and the last DRAGON", not furry, elongated chupacabra xd. In my opinion, it's just painful to look at it, too bright, too much blue, too much everything :/.
@@silverfoxdemon9292 But I'm pretty sure they didn't have a fur (besides their mane), nor they weren't blue or in other, pastel/rainbow colours. In my opinion, it's just running my experience a bit being honest. I think, it would really fit better if the dragon was a bit more "serious" looking if that makes sense :V. Like, in darker colours, having actuall scales, maybe the face of it could be not as 'Elsa-looking' or something :0
@@tylersmith3139 east asian dragons can still be scaly amd serious looking. Sisu looks more like a Kirin than an actual Eadtern dragon, which generallt are very scaly with fur only on maine, tail and mustaches and stuff
Haven't seen the movie, but from what I saw of Sisu talking about being a good swimmer, it felt like one of those long, drawn-out "Family Guy" jokes where they over-explain the joke to say "see? This is why it's funny! LAUGH NOW." You all know the ones.
I think an annoying thing too about trusting Namaari at the end is that it didn't feel like it was earned but more so of a, "if Namaari didn't do this, she would die too". They could've made this a really good movie if they hadn't done a lot of stuff like that.
Actually in Asian culture and traditions, dragons were water creatures. I guess since they made this adaption more authentic, they took some liberties with the design. For other comments made, it seems like it is a general consensus.
Visually, this movie was beautiful I feel like it would’ve worked better as a tv series, that way it wouldn’t feel so rushed and we would have more time to get to know the characters and become invested in their separate stories. Also, Sisu should’ve stayed dead, so there at least would’ve been consequences that actually stuck. But then again killing off a character just to bring them back because reasons is one of my biggest pet peeves so :P And do not get me started on the dragon designs. I get they were trying to go for a more Eastern Asia serpent dragon type, but all the fur and the bright colors and everything just do not fit the rest of the world they’re in. It’s not like you can’t market a dragon with scales-just look at Toothless. All that being said, this video was great and I think I enjoyed it more than the movie tbh lol
@@hearmeout1767 IKR I’m not gonna get into it cuz then I’d be here all day lol but I’m just gonna say if you’re gonna kill off a character then resurrect them or completely fake their death altogether, it better be for a DANG good reason. I’ve seen this done well only twice that I can think of off the top of my head
it would have been a little better if it was a show, in my opinion, you would have more time to world build, set a background, and a LOT more. it just would have been better
YES this is what I kept saying while watching it, the “found family” trope that they tried to push so hard didn’t work because we had no reason to really connect and like the characters?? Plus so many things felt so rushed
okay- SO. The only thing I'm gonna say is there are more ways to design a dragon then western medieval. I'm not huge on this movie either but the complaining that a dragon in a movie inspired by east asia should look like western designs for dragons is annoying the hell outta me. You want another movie example for this type of dragon design? Spirited Away.
But they could have made a badass eastern dragon, just like in Spirited Away and Dragon Ball. The design of the Raya's dragon sucks because it's just too cute and childish. It doesn't even look like an ancient powerful creature.
@@eduardon9299 I mean its Disney though- its expected that ts cute. I dont expect a bad ass dragon like spirited away or dragon ball in a Disney film. BUT yes, I will agree that the face they gave her was very uncool- and could have been way better. I just dont expect it out of disney
@@AlisterSweets I mean, it would be really cool, if the dragon design was more serious, like a real, ancient, powerful creature, and then changing to a human form like that, it would be a nice contrast in my opinion. I mean, not make it to be very dramatic, because it shouldn't be overdone otherwise it would just look stupid, but still, if done right it would be really nice. And the dragon doesn't need to look like an elongated furry lizard with a child's face to still look "nice and kindhearted" or stuff too :0
@@mangosday I think he was pointing out that Disney is perfectly capable of making a dragon look cool but chose not to for this movie, he literally mentions Mulan in his dragon rant. Kinda embarrassing for *you*
I think the main reason the dad didn't jump in the water with raya was because before that the arrow went in his leg so he probably knew he wouldn't be able to swim properly with raya and hold her down.
This movie just proved that good graphics can't save a shit story. This movie was just sooo luke-warm that I have literally never heard anything about it since it first came out. The last time this movie was ever on my radar was when some RUclipsr(rightfully) called out Raya for being a bargain bin Avatar.
Ima just say a few things, and I have a feeling this may be a bit of a rant. First of all, Sisu's design: I think she was based on Chinese dragons or whatever that are very long and have no wings. But then again, her design is still kinda... I dont know how to describe it. I think you were right, they designed her to be easily made into toys and marketable. I think if they added SOME even remotely scary or 'dragon-like' fetures, her design would be much better, like sharp claws and teeth she uses to fight and/or intimidate others. Second, the moral of the movie: What their teaching kids specificly in this movie, is NOT good to be teaching kids. That being: 'Trust others, even if their untrustworthy'. Raya is right to be suspicious of Namaari (Sorry if I spelled that wrong, Ima be spelling it wrong most likley), she caused her to have trust issues, she stabbed Raya in the back. Twice. And yet. We should... still.. trust her? I think this movie is teaching kids to trust people who are untrust worthy. Third, Sisu's INSISTANCE of trusting others: Okay for this I think Sisu just needs to get with the times, and get her head out of the clouds. Yes, she grew up in the past when it was safe and fine to be trusting of others, but she's in a new enviroment and needs to learn if she is to survive. OFC she trusted her siblings. THEIR HER FAMILY. Namaari, on the other hand, has a record of stabbing everyone in the back fo rwhat she thinks is right. Raya has nno, absolutely NO reason to trust her. Sisu NEEDS to learn this. Anyways, this comment is already WAAAYYY too long. So have a good day/night.
Not only was and is MUSHU a better character design, he also has more personality than Sisu. Sisu is like a doll programmed to run on trust, Mushu had a mission, you could relate to him even if he ended up being the funny guy. He had his moment of glory. I still must understand where did Sisu stood in this movie...
The father couldn’t get in the river since hes wounded and too heavy… but he could’ve have used the gem to make them go away since they are scared of the gem, instead of yeeting her.
This movie would quite literally beat you over the head about "trusting people"… like Raya didn't just inadvertently caused the end of the world by being backstabbed for trusting Namaari…
I totally agree with you. There were many things about this film that I found good, but how do you count on one hand what I found bad about this film... That's a whole truckload. What excited me most was the ending and the character of Namaari, who actually gave me the cold puke in one sentence, the film sucked
The thing that irks me the most is why the hell did Fang wanted to steal the gem. We never really knew. We know they wanted to be the one to bring it all back together cuz of what they did, but WHAT WAS THE MOTIVE? WHAT WOULD THEY GET FROM STEALING THAT GEM? Druun? Well they achieved that, why were they sad abt it then??
Disney didn't even advertise this movie, I swear. I was disappointed too, she's supposed to be part of the princesses? I rebuke that. Not a princess vibe movie at all (I know she's a chief, so is Moana, she's still part of the princesses). Way more action/quest movie than princess, to me, don't come for me lol.
I was so hyped when I heard it based on SEA. Very disappointed in the dragon design. There are a lot of dragons in SEA, but not this, not a cotton candy dragon. Then I watched the movie, the world is amazing. I really love all the clans. The plot and some characters are just awful. Like that amazing world is wasted on this plot.
I liked the idea of the movie but it should have been a tv series. And Sisu , like Raya, should have learned that while you can trust some people but can’t trust everyone.
You know I hope this guy gets traction. His video quality and editing is pretty professional and manages to make me laugh as well. Goodshit my guy, I hope you break 100,000k this year
Seriously though, those toys he showed in the F.R.I.E.N.D.S section were soooo fucking ugly! Like, common they really couldn't get a better toy manufacterer? GAG!
I remember my mom laughed at the fart bug scene. I'm so disappointed. Also the dragon design looks like a fuzzy Elsa unicorn with claws, definitely for merch purposes and entertaining little kids
im more upset how his dad..been stone for years doesnt feel any emotion to the fact his daughter now is years older, living alone fending for herself..he missed so much of the years and just reacts like its not something heavy... I left home for few years when i came back and saw the whites in my parents hair..it was a shock..but for him its like "meh, the usual"
It's such a shame that the moral drags this movie's plot down so much. The animation, design, fight choreography and all is so cool. And it was nice to see a badass fighter Disney princess again. I feel like Disney will take it as a sign this kind of stuff isn't popular when it's actually just the messiness of the story. Edit: I also disliked the dragon design. I liked that they took inspiration from Asian dragons but it looks so incredibly made to be marketable, no personality. It doesn't even fit in with the rest of the world, Sisu always looks out of place.
As a southeast Asian, I literally didn't see a single thing besides the snake shaped swords that really looks like anything I have seen. Im sure a lot of people worked hard, but it kind of looks like they mashed Avatar props with google images of Asian stuff
Like wtf is the theme of the movie??? Don’t trust people or trust everyone??? Like why should I trust the fang girl with the parts of the gems, like she got the gem broke, killed the dragon, and nearly killed raya multiple times like why the hell should she trust her?? Also we need more character development with raya, like show her loosing hope as she doesn’t find sisu at the river ends. And I also agree with the dragon designs, like dude make the dragons look more like eastern dragons instead of furry sausages with horns. Also I hate the baby, like why a baby and some monkeys, and babies aren’t that smart and I hate this baby for being so. Also it makes no sense that the dragons had specific powers in their parts of the gem, like at the end it’s showed that they all have the same powers so why associate specific powers with specific siblings when everyone has the same dang powers! Like wtf I hate this movie
They designed sisu like that cause why have a cool looking dragon when you can have a fluffy not dragon that can be easily turned into a marketable plushy.
There is one thing that really confuses me about the plot that changes the entire movie for the worst. If using the gem stops the Drude and saves all the people who were turned into statues, why weren't the Dragons saved the first time it was used but were saved the second time it was used? There is absolutely no difference between either use of the gem, but because of plot reasons, somehow the first use of the gem wasn't enough. I understand that if the gem worked fully the first time around, we wouldn't even have the movie's plot, but that just makes it a poorly written plot if you have to break the rules of your established world just to have any story whatsoever.
"Everyone put your gem pieces together we can save the world" "We don't trust her!" Even if you don't trust her, like what is she gonna do? The world is about to end she doesn't really have any other options
I still remember when I watched this movie with my (ex)boyfriend, who is asian. He just didn’t care about how bad the movie was and just stated “It uses asian culture, therefore I REALLY LIKE it”
I do love how much thought DreamWorks put into their dragons in the HTTYD movies and shows. Admittedly some aren’t the best and a few got kinda repetitive, but the main 5, Whispering/Screaming death, the Deathsong, Skrill, FireWorm, Typhomerang, and Changewings are my favorites. The designs, patterns, and personalities come across so well even though the dragons DON’T speak. I could see DreamWorks re-working the designs of their more elongated and serpent like dragons and easily make them look SEA.
So that's why I can really understand you without reading subtitles. You're Filipino too🇵🇭. While watching raya before, my face is always like 🤔🤨😂😒😕, there are message and executions that aren't really delivered nicely. I really love your humor💖
5:45 pretty sure he got shot in the leg with an arrow. You pretty much need two of each limb to be capable of swimming. 7:00 they were going for what dragons look like in Asian mythologies, Mushu takes the exact same body structure as Sisu and still qualifies as a dragon, just not the type we see in European and Western culture. Also I liked the review, just cleaning up a few things.
i dont think its about the body structure. you even mention mushu having the same body type when he said in the video that mushu looks like a dragon. more about the face and color palette i think. she looks like an mlp dog cat elsa horse instead of having dragony features
You don't need to use your legs to swim. If you ever watch long distance open water swimming at the Olympics they essentially don't use their legs at all until the sprint to the finish at the very, very end. And it's not like he needs to go at Olympian pace, they established an understanding that the Druun don't like water, so even being injured and just floating with the river would have been enough to escape. And I think most people know you can just float on your back. It's just one of many nonsensical decisions characters make in the film sadly.
Don’t know why everyone is saying that Sisu doesn’t look like a dragon tbh. “There is no right or wrong way to do a dragon. It’s a fantasy creature and you can go wild with it,” as someone on the internet said.
A alternative tittle suggestion for this could be: "woman gets gaslighted into thinking everything is her fault because she doesn't trust the very people that fucked and keep fucking things up *The Movie*"
It's really sad how badly guarded the gem was even at the beginning of the movie when sneaking into the main part of the cave for I said this is too easy
Raya: everything changed when the Drune attacked.. …it turned anyone who touched it into stone. A mindless plaque that spread like wildfire. Me: COVID-19
Do you not know what dragons look like in Asian mythologies? I mean look at the dragon in Spirited Away hell look at Mushu from Mulan. Like literally Google Asian mythology depictions of dragons in art.
Lol sisu doesn't even look like the actual dragon lol plus he was right about not looking like the actual dragon it looks like elsa with a mane but with a lizard body
But they could have made a badass eastern dragon, just like in Spirited Away and Dragon Ball. The design of the Raya's dragon sucks because it's just too cute and childish. It doesn't even look like an ancient powerful creature.
How great would it be if they realised that the souls of the dead dragons were reborn as human beings. My ending would be: When the evil attacks again, Namaari and Raya use the energy source to transform into their "real" form: into beautiful dragons and fight to save their people. I would like that.
What the movie said: trust everyone! What the movie showed: trusting people can lead to betrayal and pain and the end of the world! Until the end of the movie. Then everyone is good. If it was going to be about trust, the movie should have kept the message consistent at least, and more nuanced. Let Raya learn that SOME people can be trusted, and others can earn back trust after that was betrayed, and you can't trust some people at all. Let the group grow to rely on one another through the things they experience and let Namaari show some remorse and try trusting in Raya a bit herself. I think it would have meant a lot more if they all gave their piece of the gem to Raya in the end, not Namaari who showed no trust or trustworthiness through the entire movie. After the rest gave up theirs, Namaari could have finally let go of her own distrust toward Raya who repeatedly gave her another chance to do the right thing.
While I see your point, I think it would have helped to include only eastern dragons in your “dragon, not a dragon” argument. Eastern and western dragons look nothing alike.
They don't look very much alike, this is true, but one thing they both do have in common is that they don't look like My Little Pony characters. Sisu is for some reason designed very mammalian, and her face is awfully humanesque and "cute", but it just ends up making her uncanny to look at for me. She does not even remotely look like the Bakunawa or Phaya Nak she was based on.
The dragon was supposed to look like an eastern dragon as opposed to a western dragon. Eastern dragons are more elongated and are based off of snakes whereas western dragons are more like lizards. But I see what you mean, I think Sisu could have looked cooler

That was my problem with the movie too with native trust it’s not good to teach people to trust everyone.
It isn't that Raya was a stupid bias child, she was nice to Numaari and not xenophobic but then Numaari gave her a valid reason to not trust her
It's really ironic too, comparing with actual South East Asia right now
Namaari is a gaslighter and gave no one any reason to trust her for the entirety of this movie with how it’s written

Yeah, but didn't she choose to die anyway after reassembling the gem?
Exactly! This would be like calling Megatron or Skeletor heroes for saving the day when they literally had no other choice.
She is based off of a eastern dragon and not a western dragon which one looks more snake like then the other, but I don’t recall ever seeing an eastern dragon with a mane before.

I've seen better Asian dragons.
The visuals, main character, and idea were amazing but the message to kids of "trusting everyone even if they backstabbed you twice and killed your friend" was HORRIBLE, like, it should've been "trust is earned not given"
Sisu's design was aweful and she was so unfunny.
Mary sue ass dragon
The characters designs look like xbox avatars
Not really found all the characters boring. Especially the main character. No personality apart from I trust no one and yes I know but that does not make her anymore likeable. I hope to god. To any god that she does not become an official princess. I love the first three(/the golden trio) princesses but I think Raya is a worst role model.

You should check out Encanto, its visuals are even better and the story is insanely fun for me :D

7:08, technically, Sisu is based on a southeast asian mythology Sea serpernt or a Water Dragon called Naga, it can shapeshift too. Actually in Asian culture and traditions, dragons were water creatures. I guess since they made this adaption more authentic, they took some liberties with the design. For other comments made, it seems like it is a general consensus.
Visually, this movie was beautiful
I feel like it would’ve worked better as a tv series, that way it wouldn’t feel so rushed and we would have more time to get to know the characters and become invested in their separate stories.

No wonder this movie didn't make money.
Being one of the cherry-picked movies locked behind an additional $30 paywall on Disney+ also likely didn't help*
Brainrot💀😭🙏
Cringe💀😭
When the dad came back to life wouldn't he still have that hole or what ever in his leg?
At the end of the movie when she sees her dad, he limps to pick up a flag
Chinese Lung Dragon, but they stated they based Sisu's design off the Naga.
I never want to hear another character in a film say “dragon nerd” again.
The craziest part is in the end after Namaari has all the gem pieces she still tried to leave them all behind
11:16
I thought he was gonna say
"cause it's the magic of friendship!"
those dragons be colored like ponies .-.
"They chose me because they trusted me"
Did.. Did they not trust each other?
I liked the idea of the movie but it should have been a tv series. And Sisu , like Raya, should have learned that while you can trust some people but can’t trust everyone.
4:16 i literally was saying in my head “i bet that girl betrays raya”
Trust has lost all meaning.
Yea I kinda felt like it's become an annoying word of some sort
I mean, they trusted Namaari to save herself alongside the whole world. Namaari had no choice. A super way to hammer the trust message (no).
that spongebob from stone to alive was genius
If you want an actual good story about strangers coming together and trusting one another, go watch Maya and the Three
They designed sisu like that cause why have a cool looking dragon when you can have a fluffy not dragon that can be easily turned into a marketable plushy.
I agree about Sisu not being a dragon; she looks more like a cross between a snake, a lion, and a unicorn.
Brainrot💀😭🙏
Cringe💀😭
7:08 No, that is not a dragon, that is a blue-horned lion snake peacock.
thank you that you added malaysia we are forgotten people
3:53 when they use modern day language I went ballistic, like who talks like this naturally?
(The whole fangirling over the dragon)
6:32 he gets it
There is one thing that really confuses me about the plot that changes the entire movie for the worst.
Imagine if Raya couldn’t swim 💀
Ngl, when the dad threw Raya off the bridge it made me cackle A LOT
"Everyone put your gem pieces together we can save the world"
"We don't trust her!"
Even if you don't trust her, like what is she gonna do? The world is about to end she doesn't really have any other options
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks the dragons look like My Little Pony rejects
I've seen what Asian dragons look like in art. And they don't look like My Little Pony rejects. Do Better Disney!
This really should have been a tv show
It will probably be better
Yes I agree, this hilarious review could be made into a tv show.
Yeah
No🥰😍
Disney's biggest mistake is not hiring lea salonga for this project
It’s honestly hilarious, looking back now, that people thought this movie would start the next renaissance or something like that😂🤣
"I love you my dewdrop."
*Yeets child off bridge with a fall that would probably kill a child that age*
lol
That spongebob movie edit was the best part of this video
I still remember when I watched this movie with my (ex)boyfriend, who is asian. He just didn’t care about how bad the movie was and just stated “It uses asian culture, therefore I REALLY LIKE it”
Woke people in every arguement about whether a woke movie is good or not:
Its sad that dream works can make many and many different amazing dragon designs but Disney can’t make one good one
Mushu: am I a joke to you?
@@jendoe9436 I mean most of the designs in HTTYD came from the book series so they already had the designs to work with
Brainrot💀😭🙏
Cringe💀😭
So that's why I can really understand you without reading subtitles. You're Filipino too🇵🇭. While watching raya before, my face is always like 🤔🤨😂😒😕, there are message and executions that aren't really delivered nicely.
I really love your humor💖
Love how together, the gem completely snaps the drunk out of existence, yet separated, they do nothing...
Either way, he could have used the gem to defend himself.
Dragons are covered in scales not fur.
@Gabriella Macieyowski sisu wasn't supposed to have leg's lol
She looks like a extremely cartoon kirin mixed with the usual thought of Asian dragons
Don’t know why everyone is saying that Sisu doesn’t look like a dragon tbh. “There is no right or wrong way to do a dragon. It’s a fantasy creature and you can go wild with it,” as someone on the internet said.
Let’s make Moana, but take everything good about Moana out!!
Raya and brave could have been a masterpiece T_T in my opinion
Do you not know what dragons look like in Asian mythologies? I mean look at the dragon in Spirited Away hell look at Mushu from Mulan. Like literally Google Asian mythology depictions of dragons in art.
Yeah he's southeast Asian and complains that the dragon doesn't look like a fucking Smaug hahahaha. Shows how much he cares about his culture.
7:35 he talks about Mushu from Mulan tho
Lol sisu doesn't even look like the actual dragon lol plus he was right about not looking like the actual dragon it looks like elsa with a mane but with a lizard body
Yeah he should have used Haku from spirited away as an example for an eastern dragon. But still he has a point of Sisu having a bad design.
Looks like Disney completely ignored the term of parents to their kids "stranger danger"
if they were going for an eastern dragon design why'd they make her an elongated cat with a horn
Ok, just realize, what if being stuck in stone slows down time? being fair, it could be "Eternity in there"
What the movie said: trust everyone!
This whole movie Numaari and Susi blame Raya because she trust being broken and want her to trust other again 🙄
I always thought Sisu looked more like a Kirin than a dragon.
The dragon was supposed to look like an eastern dragon as opposed to a western dragon. Eastern dragons are more elongated and are based off of snakes whereas western dragons are more like lizards. But I see what you mean, I think Sisu could have looked cooler
