Yeah I want a series for more of the characters story, they did sneak in some Pepa story on the sidelines, her pressure being the emotional impact of having to hide her true emotions to not be a nuisance. In the end she's dancing and letting out rain clouds which shows her bond with the family is patched and she can feel how she wants now. Camilo was going to have a story but it was cut out for screen time and I wish they snuck some bits in, he was gonna have an identity crisis about how people only like him when he is not himself.

I feel like if an hour was added to the movie, with everyone getting a song it would’ve been so much better. Like Camilo singing about him starting to have to think when he turns into Himself and how he doesn’t know who he is. Dolores singing exasperated about hearing everything, how she can’t take it and how she is just so sick of having to keep people’s secrets and ignore their words when she is faced with them. Pepa could’ve sung about how done she is with always holding her feelings back and being shamed for it by Abuela. Julietta shaking and having a song similar to Luisa, being scared that if she can’t help someone, if she isn’t useful - she shouldn’t be there. Also??? We were robbed of Felix and Augustus (maybe even Mariano) singing about how it is to marry into a magical family. Oh and Bruno and Mirabel singing angry songs at Abuela because in a way she did all of this to them (yes she was traumatized too, but she made the family toxic). 12:18 I just realized why Dolores didn’t hear the house crumbling: It’s because when Casita was falling apart, the magic was going wonky. Luisa noticed because she could feel her strength had gone poof in that moment, but the entire town and her family (minus Mirabel) was in Antonio’s room. It would’ve been super loud and crowded, so Dolores probably didn’t even realize her power had been muted (pun not intended).

I kind of get the feeling that Dolores did hear the house breaking, abuela talking about the miracle, etc. but, just like the other children, might carry a lot of pressure to be perfect. She probably doesn’t always say or voice what she hears, or is very selective about what she shares with the family. She uses her powers for the “good” of the family and never to try to “ruin” or hurt the family. Clearly, she saw how her Tio Bruno was treated for hurting the family, and probably wanted to avoid that guilt and shame.

To me the actual reality paints her a lot less favorably which is that she was intentionally trying to ruin the proposal with her gossip because she secretly didn't want it to go well because she was in love with the same guy, and was passive aggressively trying to mess things up. I see no other reason why she couldn't have waited til afterwards to tell them. Honestly if this movie just had 5 more minutes to add a scene where we see the family after Mirabel is lost and the house is destroyed would have made this movie feel next level for me. I absolutely loved when abuela yelled at mirabel because it felt so raw and real. It’s the exact response that many parents and head of households would give to what they deem an “out of control” child. That sort of toxic response reminded me of my own family. Everything wrong is “because of you” not them. That’s why I was a little disappointed with the quick turn around of abuela and just the house getting restored so quickly afterwards. It would have been amazing not having mirabel in a scene for 5 minutes and just being able to see the damage from Abuela’s perspective. Her slowly realizing just how broken this family is because of her, without the magic getting in the way. She could have seen how worthless Lucia felt without her strength, or how her placing her ideals on flower girl was crushing her (maybe her even noticing how she didn’t like the romantic dude at all), or her seeing how devasted and panicked mirabel’s parents were. Or her seeing how dorales isn’t in pain anymore without the magic. Or her just seeing how entirely lost everyone was in who they were without their magic. And even a scene where abuela gets bombarded with questions of what to do now by everyone and it taking her back to how she felt before when her village was attacked and her husband lost. I feel like just a 5 minute scene establishing where the family was without mirabel and magic would have really put more depth on abuela, would have established how important mirabel is to the family even more so, and shown the thinking and processing abuela went through after her fight with mirabel and before meeting back up with her. I think it also would have made the backstory of abuela a lot less out of no where and there could have even been a cute line where she said that when the house was being destroyed she felt herself go back to when she was all alone after her husband died but she realizes that she’s not all alone cuz she has all of her family and the strong head mirabel there to help her. Idk I just feel like there was a part missing when the house was destroyed and everyone was just kinda there but we get nothing, just a cut to mirabel at the lake

I don’t think Abuela immediately changed her mind. Her facial expressions suggested she was shocked because either she had never thought about how she herself could impact the family, or she was shocked that someone would talk back to her when she’s the matriarch maybe. Anyways, it definitely took some time before she realized her own mistakes, which is the scene you’re probably asking for.

Just to clarify, the way the movie was written was heavelly based in a Latin-american literar genre called "magical realism", and in that genre the magical is just considered a "normal thing" like gravity and whatnot, so the magic is like a everyday thing and so doesn't need an explanation, most people don't know how gravity works we just know it's there and don't think much about it. So, putting the explanation of the magical to the side the story can focus on the character's journey and grow in a more natural way, experiencing his world the same way we experinence ours. That is not the best explanation but I think it can get the poin across. Btw, I don't know if it's because I am brazilian and I grew up with this type of storie, but I didn't feel the need of a explanation and loved everything else 10/10

One thing about "We Don't Talk About Bruno" that I didn't catch in theaters but I did rewatching the music video was actually how heartbreaking Isabella's prediction was. It sounds great since she is the only person who had a positive prediction from Bruno, but what caught my attention was the madrigal (music term) when Mirabel was assembling her prediction. Isabela sings "And I'm fine. And I'm fine" and that compared with the unattainable expectations from Abuela made me realize that Isabela probably kept wondering when the "life of her dreams" was going to start. I don't know when he made that prediction, but it had to be before Mirabel's gift ceremony. Just something I realized.

I thought when the house came back to life, it was because of Mirabel. It made me think that the HOUSE, the cradle of the magic is HER. Watching it again, every time the house shows cracks is when Mirabel is stressed or upset, first showing up when she gets subconscious confirmation that she isn’t actually part of the family at Antonio’s ceremony the way the rest of the Madrigals are. The house gets worse the more she “sees the cracks” in the family roles, and tries to help or fix them and ultimately gets yelled at for changing the status quo (which is absolutely what happens with children in families who think differently and sees what expectations are hurting who and tries to say something about it). So I wasn’t at all mad that the magic came back at the end because it meant that Mirabel felt part of the family, FINALLY, and that’s what brought the magic back. Her gift IS the house!

This was honestly probably my favorite Disney movie, simply because of the genuine problems they show that happen in most large hispanic families, like issues with not speaking about how you feel in fear being criticized or belittled because “you shouldn’t feel that way, other people have it worse” as a means to ignore the way you feel, rather than confront it and help the person. This along with so many other issues with being in a large family where every person has a role and gets either everything they want, gets showed love the most, gets blamed for everything, the one who has the burden of having everyone’s problems being pushed onto them so they can solve it, the one who struggles to know who they truly are and only replicates what they see in the family, the “perfect” person in the family who everyone compares themself to which obviously the “perfect” on has the hardship of keeping that reputation and doing everything right, the emotional one who gets overwhelmed easily, or just quiet one who prefers not to speak because they’ve never been believed, or always thought to be lying for attention, along with so many other problematic roles that most hispanic family’s have. I absolutely love that they genuinely showed these traits in different characters that fit along with their gifts; as much as I’d love to have them go more in depth with different characters and their specific struggles, thoughts and feelings, i don’t blame them so much just due to have so many characters with limited screen time and budget. Claps to you my friend for the commentary though! Honestly couldn’t get enough with your videos! Can’t wait for the next reaction video!

I honestly believe Encanto did an excellent job, especially with a huge cast. I think they handled each character...surprisingly well. Antonio, Camilo, and Dolores aren't the main characters of the story so I expected the level of depth the characters would get in the movie. But again, they handled it pretty well because you have a sense of who each character is and each of their personalities. In the opening song, Mirabel explains how Camilo does everything in his power to make others laugh, and throughout the whole movie, from start to "what is that? Not a house." He was the comedic character. It was also heartwarming in the end to see Antonio being the one to walk Mirabel to "her" door as she did for him at the beginning of the movie. Still emphasizing the close bond between him and Mirabel. Dolores not telling everyone about Bruno being in the walls of the house, could be explained in the song "we don't talk about Bruno," where she says "It's a heavy lift with a gift so humbling." I'm not 100% positive if she was referring to Bruno's gift here or her own, but it would make sense that she understood the pressures Bruno felt with his ability, and so left him to do as he pleased...also I'm still curious to know if she has the ability to turn her powers on and off at will. It would be odd if she was the only one in the family who couldn't(but I guess you could argue Antonio, Julieta, and Pepa's gifts...though if Pepa focused she could "stop" her powers). Even when Abuela asked Dolores about Mariano's incoming proposal, it seemed as though she had to focus...but who knows. I enjoyed the fact that our main character didn't have to go on some grand expedition and it focused mainly on the family, within the home. I loved the deep and relatable themes, ranging from generational traumas to anxiety(family, world, and self pressures/expectancies). If I could describe the movie in one word it would be "relatability," despite its obvious fantastical elements. Overall great animation, great actors/singers, great characters, great songs, great themes...Great movie.

Conflict does not fall under a single category of something fantastical or life threatening, it can also deal with the emotional struggles of a family. The laziness or the plainness you felt watching, was just the reality of actual family issues. It’s subtle, if everyone could see/tell a toxic relationship no one would be in one. Like I said before the reason I loved this movie was because it felt the most realistic, the magical element was almost not a factor. We stayed in the house and focused on helping the family. Unfortunately they had to cut alot of scenes to keep it under 2 hours. But after Antonio got his gift, he was supposed to help Mirabel get to Bruno's room through his room. There was also supposed to be a memorial for Pedro that was healing for abuela and the family but it got cut and instead it only showed art of it in the credits. The time limit is also why the endings a bit rushed. I think a series could show way more.

I think there is a lot of deep meaning in Encanto. There is an underlying focus on mental health and the dysfunction in family/human relationships, the psychological toll on each person. The Madrigals often claim to be "fine" (how many times was that one word said?) despite falling apart on the inside. This includes the "perfect golden child" Isabela, who says it during We Don't Talk About Bruno (subtle hint: she's not fine, even with her "perfect" life).
Mirabel I believe is meant to inherit Casita and the Encanto Miracle from her Abuela, keeping the family blessing going strong even when Alma gets old and presumably dies (she's already at least 68-70, judging by the fact that her kids are 50). The "failed" gift ceremony may actually hint at this: Mirabel doesn't get a room because the whole house will be hers. Some day future Madrigal kids will get their gifts from Abuela Mirabel (or Tia Mirabel, or Cousin Mirabel).
Mirabel seems to have a rather psychic link to Casita as well. During the opening sequence the house actually helps Mirabel set the table, rolling the plates right to her so that she barely has to do anything at all. And this happens while she is having an entire conversation with the coffee-geeked kids from town. Mirabel didn't need to ask, Casita just did exactly what she needed at the moment. Abuela is the only other Madrigal who we know can interact with Casita so directly (i.e., why wouldn't Luisa just ask the house to move the piano for her if she could, other than possibly pride?).
Mirabel is primed to take over for Alma when Abuela is elderly and later deceased. And with her empathy towards the needs of her family, she can do it better than her Abuela did, as well as showing them all a better way.

What I love in encanto, it is not framed as anyone's fault, no one wanted to harm anyone and everyone is treated with a lot of empathy. People rarely ever hurt us out of maliciousness, but Ignoranz and being wrapped up in their own shit. What they need is to communicate, not play a game of who is to blame! Julietta clearly loves mirabel to pieces, but that does not change that shè fails to be there for her in a meaningful way for example

Even though the rest of the family had little screen time, you can see little moments of their characters getting fleshed out, like Felix giving antonio a thumbs up when he asked the animals to warm up abuela's seat, or when the magic died Camilo's first thought was "What about antonio?" showing how much he cared for his brother, (also every scene that shows Felix as one of the best disney dads ever), and all those little things in the background.

One thing about Encanto having a wide cast means that there are too MANY possibilities for the plot to go.
    I think I see a Disney series
-The pressures that come with taking over as the head of the family for Mirabel.
-Luisa could probably still have some hangups about shouldering the majority of the family's burdens.
-Isabella's struggle to find purpose in her gift. (She was forced to make flowers before, but now she can make anything, but what SHOULD she make, and why?)
-Pepa being forced to control her emotions every moment of every day.
-Julieta having to make food every time someone is hurt and that being her only purpose.
-Antonio being unsure of what his powers mean and how it can benefit those around him.
-Camilo feeling that he can never truly be himself around others because he always has to show off his gift.
-Dolores dealing with the burden of her over hearing (or maybe trying to find a partner who is okay with her knowing everything about them)
-Bruno being excommunicated from the family.
Not to mention everyone else who DOESN'T have a gift and how they feel or integrate with the family.

    • @ariamelisma
      @ariamelisma 2 года назад +2

I wouldn't just say that it's everyone's powers simply acting up because of the house breaking, I have reason to believe that everyone with the exception of Luisa was still in full control of their powers; It's the characters themselves that were having a panik attack after hearing the news in whisper-down-the-lane fashion from Dolores. Camilo doesn't just turn into random people, when he 'glitches out,' you see him transform into Mirabel and Bruno; which are the two subjects of the extremely saucy bit of news he just received. So obviously, they're on his mind.
Félix does a spit take, which is equally as disruptive, because of the truth bomb he just received. If he had powers they would have glitched out too.
Pepa's powers, as previously established, are heavily influenced by her emotional state. After hearing that her NIECE MET UP WITH BRUNO (after literally just having a whole musical number about not talking about Bruno), AND NOW THE HOUSE IS GOING TO FALL APART AND IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE HER FAULT, of course she's going to fuck up the weather and generate a mini cumulonimbus over her side of the dinner table. And OF COURSE she's not going to be able to soothe herself with "Clear skies~" after hearing this terrifying AND INFURIATING news.
Luisa's powers seemed to have a bit of a head-start in the 'fading away' department, as she opened up to her little sister first and her door was the only one seen flickering. She was the only one at that point who was able to express to themselves (and Mirabel) that they feel their powers are more like a familial burden and that they wish they didn't have such heavy expectations. (We later learn that Isabela does feel the exact same way, but such feelings were likely subconscious until the musical number she had with Mirabel, *after* the dinner. Isabela wishes she didn't have to sacrifice so much of her own personality just to be Perfect, and we see after she learns to 'let it go' so to speak, she's genuinely a happier and more genuine person despite everything happening.)
Luisa feeling weak despite her own insane strength, became a vicious cycle as her quickly fading confidence compounded on itself to the point that she couldn't even move a piano anymore.

I think she really was referring to Bruno that time. My reasoning is that before she says "I can hear him now", she says " _it's like I hear him now_ " -- and generally such a phrase implies that the person in question is not there, and isn't gonna show up any time soon, in the way that Mariano is about to. We're not supposed to know Bruno is there, so it works.
I can think of a couple movie quotes like, "I can almost hear him speaking to me now"; "it's as if in this moment he's right here with us"; "at times I still hear his voice/see him" etc. where "he" is a character that died, left or went missing, and remains in the heart and mind of the speaker still. This usually is done to be funny cuz the "dead" character is right there, somehow unnoticed by the speaker, but there are plenty of sad/serious scenes where they say this sort of thing.
Obviously when Bruno is revealed to be living in Casita, we realize Dolores probably legit "can hear him now". But before learning that, her verse "it's like I hear him now" might serve to illustrate the fresh relevance of what Bruno told her long ago, as at that moment the man of her dreams arrives to get engaged to her sister.

Mirabel is not a princess! Her family isn't royalty, nor are they the local equivalent the way Pocahontas and Moana are daughters of chiefs. (Okay, Abuela sort of runs the town, but "granddaughter of a mayor" is not even close to royalty.) Mirabel has no love interest, meaning she doesn't gain royal status through marriage either. And while Mulan is considered a princess despite not being either of these, she was kind of given honorary status by the Emperor himself after saving the entire empire of China. Mirabel sort of restores her entire town, but again that's not a big enough scale--she's from Colombia and the at-the-time ruler of Colombia never interacted with her at all, let alone in a ceremonial way like Mulan and the emperor.

All the characters and their gifts do in fact serve the plot of the movie. Each character, their personality, how they use their gift and how they are treated by Abuela Alma according to their gift or lack of gift, enriches and deepens the overall story of generational trauma. Also, Dalores' gift is that she can hear everything at all times. Like being in a crowded train station with everyone talking at the same time. You can clearly hear what one person is saying if you focus your attention on them. That is why Dalores can hear some things and not others. And she definitely didn't hear the house cracking during the party because all of the family members gifts were weakened at that moment.

I'd like to critique your apparent "critique":
    1. The crack could not be heard because Mirabel was most likely having a premonition or dream. The directors ensured there wasn't a barrier between reality and the dream, putting us in Mirabel's shoes; like Mirabel, we question whether it's real or not.
    2. Dolores could not hear a lot of plot relevant things because she has taught herself to filter things out; it will be extremely overwhelming to hear everything at once.
    3. The reason Antonio was not involved in Mirabel's life right after he gets his power is important, as it further spotlights Mirabel's loneliness and her family's negligence towards her. Once Antonio gets his own room and powers, he has no need for Mirabel.
    4. Your title is misleading. You said you loved the movie while pointing out very few things that don't make sense, but proceeded to title it "Encanto DOESN'T make sense". I guess this is to attract traffic but still.
    5. One movie critique that I found in the comment section that I agree is in regards to Abuela's sudden change in mannerism that doesn't make too much sense. It would be far more impactful if the directors emphasise the responsibilities of Mirabel in the family; when Mirabel left, if the family members suddenly bombard Abuela with questions, hesitations, and emotions, Abuela would realise her family is long broken even with the magic, and understand Mirabel's point of view in the fight prior to the house's collapse and Mirabel's part in the family.

I think Dolores gift works pretty consistently. She wouldn’t have heard the house coming apart because the miracle was fading out for a few moments, ie Luisa felt weak and such. And I feel like with such a powerful gift she might hyperfocus on certain sounds, so when luisa’s eye was twitching that’s all she could focus on at that moment. And while I would’ve loved more fleshed out characters, especially with Camilo, who’s identity crisis was a scrapped story line, there’s only so much you can include in a limited time frame for a movie.

I agree, thought they did give the spotlight to enough characters in my opinion. First Antonio, then Luisa, Bruno, after him Isabela and Abuela, also Mirabel of course, I do feel they could have had fit one more family member in if they shortened/deletrd some less important scenes, like per example, Bruno's room could have been a lot shorter and It wouldn't have changed much.

If Luisa was feeling weak it safe to assume that other's magic was acting up, so Delores power could have stopped working then... and not to mention Abuela and Mirabel were both awake while everyone else was supposed to be asleep. Also when the cracks were happening there was a LOUD party going on.... and even if we don't consider the party I'm sure she could easily write off the sound of cracking to the earth shifting, or rocks breaking, all of which would have been in range. "Why didn't you hear this conversation you living wire tap?!" Delores: "Sorry for being a human and having human needs".

Some of the magic 'weakness' is mental, I think. Luisa had been carrying the weight of the family on her for a long time and as such, the first to 'crack' in a sense. Mirabel confronting her about the magic weakening just sent that into overdrive.

the scene that the house is falling apart is very interesting, the people with gifts in the family tried to save the miracle while just fails because they are losing the gifts, but Mirabel is the only person that reached the candle. It was like, she doesn't need powers to do the things cause she naturally live without a gift, so shes used to do the things in the hard way, while the madrigals that have a gift dont rlly know how to deal with things without the powers.

It’s shown when Agustín (another without gifts) and Julieta try to reach Mirabel, the Casita intentionally pushes them out of the building- to protect them. Better than anyone else, both Mirabel and the Casita understand one another. When Mirabel says “Casita get me up there,” the Casita knows that Mirabel won’t stop until she has the candle. It takes every effort to protect her with the last of its magic from the breaking house. Funnily enough, I think Pepa, Julieta, and Bruno all would be happier without their gifts.

My family are all immigrants from Greece, Macedonia, and the Balkans. They gave up everything and even changed our last name at Ellis island so we could fit in more. We gave up our culture, our religion, and even our origins in order to come to America. After a huge fight between me and my γιαγιά(grandma in Greek) similar to that of Alma and Mirabel’s in July of 2021, I found comfort in this movie when I couldn’t visit my dad for two years (because he lives with her). My father really didn’t do anything about this ongoing issue until December of 2022 when I showed him this movie. Greeks have a tendency to sweep family problems under the rug until it hurts people(we’re also all very autistic so it makes communication harder). We all cried and held each other when the two make up at the end. Encanto still continues to be my favorite movie because it helped mend my family back together. It helped my family recognize the cycle of generational trauma and grief: one that we have chipped away at for almost the past year. I know it has helped many other families who have stories like mine, especially in the Latino and POC communities where it is nearly ingrained into their day to day life.
I am so glad I happened to come across this channel, and I hope you have a wonderful week. 🧿

Personally I think the side characters don't NEED to drive the story along in order for them to be written well. It's the main character's job to do so . Mirabel is the one who drives the plot NOT the side characters so I don't see it as a necessity for the side characters to do much in the story as it takes away from Mirabel's journey.
And that being said I think the subtle ways the movie shows how abuela's pressure and expectations can be damaging to the characters (like pepa's frequent overthinking and Dolores having to listen to the man she loves talk about having babies with her cousin and Mirabel's mother having to constantly remind Mirabel that she is worth it and Bruno having to deal with alienation) by the way they interact with Mirabel is quite smart actually.
Not to mention the fact that characters like Camilo have their own unique personalities which is why he is a fan favorite without actually doing too much which can take away from the story's themes surrounding the relationship between her and abuela as well as Bruno and abuela
But I do think that Bruno's arc was too abrupt and the fact that everyone accepted him just like that (especially Pepa) despite having sung a whole song about how they don't talk about him. It made sense for abuela to accept him ( because of her arc at the end) thought

i honestly dont think pepa (or anyone else in the family) genuinely didnt like bruno. sure, she may have been bitter about her wedding but she has a considerably larger amount of pressure on her to keep her emotions in check and act in accordance with abuela, who has seemingly dictated that bruno shouldnt be mentioned since all the villagers see his gift as bad. and apparently camilo is supposed to be around the same age as mirabel (assuming people are getting that from the art book or extra info about the movie shared by the people who worked on it), anything he would know about bruno would be from word of mouth from the older people in his life and hes just being showy and making bruno seem scary and evil. i thought pepa and julieta immediately rushing to hug bruno was a very sweet moment

12:23 My thoughts on that is that when Mirabel sang her song she DID get a Gift (but not a Door) in that she can see visions. So the house was not actually cracking that badly.
