This movie could’ve been SO GOOD if they used the original ideas like Starboy and maybe sticked to 2D animation. It could’ve been like one of Disney’s all-time-greats. But Disney is just cowards 😒

It's weird how they put a lot of detail on the characters' faces and hair, like freckles, blushed cheeks, and gave their eyes detailing, but the details on the clothes and the rest of their bodies look like they were forgotten about by the shading team. And the background characters look so plastic and lifeless, even when they're moving. They almost move like Wii characters.

I haven't seen the movie, but even from the clips I was startled at how dull the clothing was. It looks like place-filler that was being used until the actual clothing designs were rendered. Even the background villagers in Encanto wore rich, expressive clothing that made them feel real and personal and played into the world of the story. Background villagers in Wish look like they were assigned one of 5 muted colors, then only allowed to wear that color.

The song writer Julia Michaels was done dirty they literally gave her a description with three weeks to write the songs and then that's it they never let her change or try to fix things to better fit. The only issue with the music is on a technical level. Especially “Knowing What I Know Now” with the uneven lines sounding like word salad
Some lyrics are just atrocious, too. Obviously the “I let you live here for free and I don’t even charge you rent” is bad, but “you pull me in like some kind of wind” from “At All Costs” is really bad, too. A lot of lines sound like an alien wrote them

Disney freaking wasted Chris Pine

  • @moon7shinev150
    @moon7shinev150 10 месяцев назад +1073

We were robbed. We could’ve had an evil couple and a star romance.
Also as for the animation they originally wanted 2D but then decided on a mix of 2D and 3D. I don’t understand how it looks like this they already have the perfect 2D and 3D blend animation that they used for the short film Paperman.
What would’ve worked more was if the king and queen were both evil and Asha was their daughter. Then Asha would’ve grown up thinking that keeping the wishes was the right thing and star boy had to help show her the right way. Also it would add a lot more to Asha’s character by standing against her parents since for all the other Disney princesses with evil parents they’re always stepparents (Lady Tremaine, Evil Queen, and Gothel). So the fact that a princesses actual parents are evil would’ve been so cool.
I get wanting villains like the Evil Queen back but Magnifico should've been the sympathetic villain that is way too overprotective and wants to protect everyone due to his own trauma
Also I wouldn't make Asha quirky I mean she can definitely have somethings but not as much as they did. I would make her more similar to Elsa and Mulan personality rather than Anna and Rapunzel.
You could even keep the seven friends but make them people who have already given up their wishes so they're basically just miserable and Asha has to help them. Simon could still have his betrayal but add onto why he wants to be Magnifico's knight. He could be a friend that has a crush on Asha so he wants to become a knight to impress and protect her
I would also change Asha's color palette and name. Purple reminds me too much of Rapunzel and Isabella. I wish they stuck with the orange red color palette from the concept art. In my rewrite I would also name her Luna instead of Asha since Luna means moon and the movie is about stars
Also why is the kingdom of wishes called Rosas that means Roses it would make more sense if the kingdom was called Estrellas which literally means Stars.

I cannot believe that a movie about wishes has absolutely nothing to say about them. "Be careful what you wish for." is a tagline on the poster and NOT A THING IN THE MOVIE?! Magnifico mentions once a thing about wishes being vague and that being bad, but it's not expanded upon, nor does it come back in a meaningful way. What is a bad wish? According to the movie, all wishes are valid and important. What if somebody wishes for someone else to fall in love with them? Does that violate someone else's autonomy or free will? What if someone's wish directly contradicts someone else's wish? Which one takes priority? What if someone wishes for a bunch of people to die? Any problem with that? I can't believe in this movie so packed with references, that they didn't make Magnifico's rules for wishes the same as the Genie's. No killing, love, or raising the dead. It was RIGHT THERE! A movie THEY made over 30 years ago has more to say about wishes than this movie.
What if, instead of Asha's stupid motivation with her grandfather's wish, she wanted her father to come back to life? She was sort of bummed about it in a nonspecific way. That would be something Magnifico would be very justified in not granting. That would give a reason for the whole memory erasure thing. If a person is so focused on a wish that's impossible to grant, it's better for them to forget it than have it eat away at them from the inside.
The whole Magnifico thing doesn't work. Where did this evil book come from? Did he fight and defeat evil sorcerers in his past? We don't know! It would be more compelling if it was HIS book and he USED to be evil, but sealed it away and chose to live and rule for good. That would explain the book's draw it has for him and in his breakdown of paranoia and pessimism, he turns to it again and falls into villainy. The movie as it is now gaslights him into being the villain, it's so weird! And why does the Queen know about oil on the fingers prevents evil or whatever and not the King? She and Doc both read the book too and are fine!
One more thing, how old are Magnifico and the Queen supposed to be? He founded the kingdom right? Unless there's some magical longevity nonsense we don't see, than Rosas has only been a kingdom for like 50 years max. That would mean Grandpa moved to and gave up his wish when he was in his 50's. That's a long time to be failing as a musician.

Disney has become way too comfortable with themselves. The reason they thrived in the first place was because they strived to outdo their competitors. Now they simply just “buy” their competition whenever they feel like it. Someone once said *”without criticism or pressure from others, there can be no improvement.”* And that really is true, Disney has become lazy and comfortable with themselves and everyone sees it. They may believe for now that they are invincible, but eventually they will find out they’re not and the cycle will start all over again. This is a season that will eventually pass and believe it or not I want Disney to succeed by making changes.

The saying “restrictions breed creativity” is so on point when discussing Disney. They used to be a company that broke the mold, took risks, and had competitors that pushed them to constantly up their game and consider new ways to animate and tell stories. Now, as you pointed out, they’re just set on buying every company and banking on nostalgia through cold, corporate movies that don’t understand why the original was so beloved (and often criticize the original, like the new Snow White movie; Snow, like Cinderella, was strong because she remains gentle, kind, and empathetic in the face of adversity, but Disney treats her like she was some weak, powerless, oppressed female figure and has sought to “right” that wrong in the most pandering, tone deaf, and disrespectful way). It’s kind of crazy to look at the sheer amount of sequels and remakes they’re pumping out when Walt Disney himself was staunchly against sequels of any kind because he believed there were always new and wonderful worlds to create and explore. It’s honestly sad, but mostly it’s pretty disgusting.

The music is really where they lost me. If I was asked to come up with a concept to represent 100 years of Disney, I'd have started with the music and built up with there. I'd use a wide variety of styles, from the 1920s and 30s era, to the Sherman brothers era, to the Broadway style era of the Disney Renaissance. I'd even find a way to reference park songs like Grim Grinning Ghosts.
In fact, I'd just basically make it a Kingdom Hearts style story but traveling to different musical worlds.

To be fair, the way they framed that scene of Asha asking him to grant more wishes made it seem like she thought all wished should be granted. It made Magnifico seem like he was calm and reasonable and Asha was mildly unhinged. It’s also kinda a legit thing where a miracle isn’t a miracle if it happens to everyone. I can see his pov of wanting to make sure that he didn’t grant bad wishes or wishes that could put their home at risk. I still don’t really understand his change to evil. It doesn’t really make sense to me. She asked for more wishes to be granted and it was like that one suggestion drove him off a ledge. It was weird. Then again, I didn’t watch the full thing because it looked dumb and the animation looked unfinished.

Disney has just completely forgotten about the saying *”quality over quantity.”* Did you know that the writers at Disney were once given 6 whole months to write out a story? Why have film companies just completely forgotten about that it doesn’t matter how long it takes to make film, all that matters is that the film turns out good! If a movie is good, it’s likely that people are gonna watch it! Many people today don’t care as much anymore about deadlines, THEY JUST WANNA SEE A GOOD MOVIE!! Plus it gets people all the more hyped up when the movie does eventually come out! The only way Disney can save themselves now is if they just stop, take a step back, and reevaluate everything and start fresh. Because what they’ve been doing is getting exhausting to watch.

What would’ve fixed the story is if the King was just a stern ruler who chose which wish to grant (no mind erasing or magic stealing), and Asha is the one to demand all wishes be granted because she’s young and impatient. When he gives a reasonable response for why he shouldn’t grant all wishes, she acts impulsive and tries to steal the magic for her grandfather which releases Star. When Star starts granting everyone’s wishes (other than talking animals and big veggies) it causes random chaos, and when the king goes to clean everything up it makes him look like the villain. When Asha and her friends try to stop him, he shows her all the destruction the random wishes have caused. As Asha starts to think about her actions, one of her friends turn on her to steal the power and become the real villain. But with some quick thinking Asha traps them a mirror, saving the day. The King cleans up the mess, Asha learns to be more patient and not every wish should be granted. The End.
It not much but I tried.

The weirdest thing to me about this movie was how underpublicized it was. I had no idea this movie existed AT ALL until I was in a movie theater to watch the fnaf movie and saw a poster for it up on the wall 💀 the gracious explanation is Disney didn't wanna overcommercialize it, or wanted it to be for fans that would know about it anyways. Imo, the far more likely reason is they knew it was gonna flop and they wanted to distance themselves from it early/cut their losses. Similar to what they did to poor lucasfilms' strange magic - that movie was actually really well done and deserved better, but Disney just murdered it when they bought out the studio bc it didn't match their bland movie recipe and released it with no advertising & the worst movie poster possible. crooks

I didn't consider Magnifico a villain by any means...
Like, if anything, he is the textbook-definition of what a good king is: A ruler that puts his land and people first over himself.
He does keep the wishes and make people forget about it, yes, but it's honestly understandable. If he would give them back and only grant selective ones would it seem like he plays favours, increasing the risk of a riot.
And what does he do with these wishes? Does he destroy them? Does he use them for his own gain? No. He puts them under the roof of his laboratory or whatever and "protects them like all the others".
Like... Even if the wish was to conquer the world, he still keeps it. He does not make a difference here.
Also, given his backstory, where he lost basically everything, it's only understandable that he wants to keep his kingdom safe, so he doesn't take any chances here when granting wishes. Someone could wish to become a master swordfighter, but this could result in them using this new ability to harm others.
He never even askes for anything in return. And the only time he does (Ask people to report suspicious activities), people demand a wishing ceremony, breaking him, because this was the final drop after constantly giving.
This is some actual character here. And a nuanced one at that. And meanwhile are we supposed to root for a character, whos only goal was to have her grandfather's wish granted. And when it was denied for justified reasons, she basically started a french revolution, took over power and probs killed the kingdom within 5 days after this movie ended because granting everyone's wish is a bad idea.
Like... When Magnifico says his wish is to have an apprentice to teach and offering that to her, she straight up ignored it because grandpa... And this piece of cardboard is supposed to be the protagonist while the person with actual personality is meant to be the bad guy.
If that doesn't yell "Disney", I don't know what else would... Great 100th anniversary special....

    4. It has a scary and cool villain.
    5. It has romance.
    6. It offers commentary on the idea of wishes and dreams and hard work.
    7. It has references to older Disney movies. The act of wishing on stars, the origin for the second star to the right, the flying carpet and Pumba easter eggs in the opening, the ball set up, and probably lots of others that I'm not remembering.

I wouldn't even give Magnifico a wish in the first place. Why would you? When there's no absolute guarantee it'll come true, I'd just keep it to myself.

  • @WobblesandBean

Magnifico is a victim. He has PTSD from seeing his family and his home get destroyed. He has every right to not grant wishes he deems as potentially dangerous. He's the one running the show, he's the one who studied his whole life to learn magic, he gets to choose what wishes get granted.
And along comes this teenager who doesn't know anything about anything, and she wants to overthrow the kingdom for that? She's throwing a toddler tantrum and destroyed a utopia, all because she demanded special treatment and doing literally nothing to earn it.
Also, once Magnifico gets possessed, he fails to be the same character. *_Magnifico, is, a, victim._* And the movie treats him as evil for it? Great message Disney, that's not messed up at all.

15:33 but thats the point.. if the old guy DID want to create an angry mob and his wish was given back he would just do it himself, and if someone would have an unubtainable wish like having their pet live forever, their WILLINGLY given wish would make them not be heartbroken when it doesnt happen as explained in the movie.. so in conclusion, if you have seen the movie you would know people give their wish to magnifico willingly.

The fact that this movie was 10 years in the making is a complete joke. Obviously this was paving the way for the whole When You Wish Upon a Star theme that's been so very prominent in many Disney but somewhere during production they completely changed their values and what the think the fans want to see and shat this out instead

Speaking of the music, I am not a theatre nerd, but I was and still am always a band nerd. The scores from their past disney music, especially their princesses, were AMAZING!! I would have loved combinations and motifs from them in their music than the vague pop songs they gave us. Plus, it's another way to give us easter eggs without it affecting too much of the story.

Although I haven’t seen the movie, Asha and King Magnifico’s dynamic reminds me a lot of the dynamic between Miles Morales and Miguel O’Hara in SpiderMan:Across the Spiderverse if it was done wrong (since we see Miguel’s backstory to show that Miles could be wrong which makes the conflict more compelling).

He has to rule a kingdom that's not gonna be simple he's running a kingdom without charging anyone and he has to make sure the economy can thrive and can you imagine how chaotic it he granted every wish in the entire kingdom?

    • @mr.histor1996
      @mr.histor1996 3 месяца назад +2

He was beyond well-adjusted. He was practically a saint. He founded his own kingdom so he could take in refugees. He gave them a safe place to live and provided for them while demanding nothing in return. He even allows literally every single one of his citizens to petition him for a wish. He's obviously not exploiting them because his "villain song" is about how he feels exploited. He expresses early on that he feels like people just use him, don't actually care about him, and he was proven 100% right. When he got corrupted, no one even tried to help him. The abandoned him without a second thought, threw him into a dungeon to be tortured, and moved on to the next person who promised to grant their wishes.
To add insult to injury, the only reason he was corrupted was because he was trying to protect his people. He sensed an unknown and powerful magic with the potential to destroy Rosas and turned to the book so he could save his people from what he thought was a threat. He wasn't hatching some evil scheme when he turned to the book. He was staring at the burnt tapestry from his homeland and vowing not to let that happen to Rosas.

@mLernen Yeah, everyone in this movie not named Magnifico is a terrible person. His wife knows he's corrupted, and she knows that the only reason he is corrupted is because he was trying to protect his kingdom and its people. Yet, not only does she not try to help him, not only does she not grieve for him, she calls him an "it" and locks him away in a dark dungeon to experience endless darkness and loneliness while she takes over the kingdom that he built.
