Just to clarify, in the original book, the sisters of the little mermaid actually give their hair to the sea witch in order to save their sister.
Mnhm. In the old Japanese animated movie of the little mermaid I learned that. It was one of my favorite movies growing up. [The English dub of it anyways.]
Which that mermaid was named "Marina."
yes, they gave the hair to the witch for a dagger. So the princess had to kill the prince with it otherwise she would turn into sea foam by the dawn. She tries while he's asleep and ultimately can't bring herself to do this. Then she simply accept her fate.
Sad shit.
@@kritzkrieg14 Which is why I'm glad Disney Disney-fies these old stories to make them less depressing. I mean I heard that in the original Sleeping Beauty the prince r*pes Aurora, and I just wanna look into the authors eyes and ask " Who hurt you? Why are you like this?".
@@PestilentAllosaurus Did she even have a name in the original story? I gotta watch that movie someday though.
In general I gotta give this movie props for actually involving her sisters more. The Disney version was mostly just a solo show with Ariel, Flounder, and Sebastian.

The twist of having the human prince turn into a mermaid so he and the little mermaid can be together is actually a pretty interesting idea. It's clearly not utilized well, but if written into a better ver. of this story, this might've been decent-

An Evil version of Bayonetta, obviously.
The worst part is the end result is better to me. The prince becoming a mermaid because he wanted a life of adventure and can do so with the princess seems like a great ending. It’s too bad it was brought to the table by asylum
So it rips off the ending of “Splash” (1984) AND the ending of the live action remake of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” in terms of the prince giving up his life on land to be with the mermaid, and the prince and the mermaid wanting to explore the world together.

What's crazy is, the models aren't bad, and the animation (for being done solely by *ONE* man) isn't entirely awful. Imagine if this dude had more funds, more time to hone his craft... he 100% can go _way_ further than bargain bin Mockbusters!
EDIT: i ALSO LOOKED A MIKE'S PORTFOLIO! Dude he's talented for a solo animator/artist. Which tells me The Asylum just didn't give him a reasonable amount of time to truly show what he's capable of.
Give link? Can't find his works anywhere.
Or actually creative ideas.
tru
Lmao
Where can I find the portfolio? You've got me curious, and Google isn't helping
I've animated 3-4 minute music videos before and let me tell you, doing an entire production on your own is not easy. This is actually quite impressive to me even if it isn't good. Props to him for doing all this on his own. He's definitely found a niche with these low-quality films, and it works. Those facial expressions are gold.
Lol I tried to do a 5 second animation of an eye opening and closing some time ago just to see if I could do it and how it would be and I gave up after like two frames… 🥲 I could never animate an entire movie by myself.
But I also tried out stop motion animation in the way that the artist William Kentridge does (always using the same paper and just erasing and redrawing and taking photos of it) for a school project and it went better. I made it 1:40 min long and I had maybe 3000 frames in total. It’s not amazing, but it was still extremely exhausting.
So, for a movie animated by a single person, this is actually quite ok.

Dude animated a whole movie by himself. Imagine if he had a budget of 2 or 3 million even and had a small team. Imagine if he had 20 million. The animator is actually quite impressive especially doing it all by himself in 3-5 months. I have to give props knowing the process.
Same- I'm really impressed. This is the best looking Asylum film AND its basically one guy. And that's... a lot of work and a lot to have created all alone. I think it doesn't look bad at all, the mouth movements and the death in the eyes is the major issue, if that was toned down, it wouldn't look like a bad film, a mid ranged one actually, very good for like RUclips quality to say the least. I'm pretty impressed with it. More so then that- I think if he had some help with facial animations and someone to make models, he could make movies himself and probably go along way. I'm pretty inspired actually.
Yeah, I get a split reaction when seeing the clips from this movie. It's not as good as a "real" film made by a proper animation team, but it's *way* better than you'd expect from one guy working on his lonesome. I mean, just compare it to the "Joshua" movie, which was also basically a one-man project.
I agree, this is impressive for one person in such a short timeframe. One big improvement that's needed is the rigging. Some of the deadness in the facial animation is because the skin around the eyes and scalp doesn't move with the other parts of the face. The scalp line rises as the eyebrows do, the skin around the eyes shifts with the muscles of the cheeks and eyebrows, etc. As the visual acuity of your models increases, so too must your rigging or you dive into the uncanny valley (pun intended.) The tail also looks like it's rigged based on a human leg joint system as opposed to a fish or dolphin tail. This makes sense if they're working with stop motion, but it'd look better with a keyframe-animated tail. And of course, the mouths need to be reduced by 20-50% in size and range of movement. But I actually like the mouth shapes used and the overall model designs are very appealing. And props for that subsurface scattering at the end, that was nice!
i doubt that's all his work. most of it is likely animated by ai using cascadeur or taking mo cap animations from mixamo.
well its motion capture, they are expensive sometimes but you basically just move around theres no animating involved.
Love how bootleg Moana just looks pissed off 100% of the time. If you were to watch the whole movie without any sound you'd think every single character in the movie killed her whole bloodline and that she's seeking for revenge.

So, about the hair thing.
In the original fairy tale, the Sea-Witch is more of a literal bargainer. She warns the mermaid that not only will her human feet hurt as if she was walking on needles the entire time, but if she can't make the prince fall in love with her her heart will literally break and her body will dissolve into sea foam.
When the prince starts falling in love with another woman, her sisters go to the sea witch and beg her for an out, giving their hair as compensation. In return the sea witch gives them a cursed dagger that will free the little mermaid from the spell if she kills the prince with it. However at the last moment she finds she can't go through with it, throws herself back into the ocean and dies.
Yeah, fairy tales.
Yeah, looks like the children from Hans's time had nightmares from their own tales.
actually interesting that you cant get anything for free in the original. Wish fulfillment requiring equivalent exchange gives a story a lit of potential that no subsequent remakes took full advantage of 🤔
Right...except for the last part. Not that the little mermaid's death is wrong, it's just a little too simplistic to say that's all that happens. After she turns into foam, she's told by some voice that it's now her duty to watch over children at bedtime, protecting them from nightmares and heartbreak. So it kind of goes from one mythical species to another: the little mermaid becomes the little pixie... Or angel? Or sandman? But there's a reason Disney named her Ariel. She becomes a sky spirit. Anyway it's said the story is an allegory for a crush Anderson had on a (male) fellow writer after he rejected him.
@@SheilaDeBonis So, the voice speaking to her was God (Hans was a devout Christian and many of his stories have religious undertones) and what she became was, I believe, a Sylph, and the deal was that if she did that duty for 100 years or something she'd get a soul, which is why she wanted to marry the prince to begin with because in exchange for being immortal Mermaids don't have souls and have to marry humans in order to become fully human and obtain one.
As for ha's crush well, he wasn't rejected because he never actually confessed those feelings. He wrote them in a letter but never sent it because his belief in his faith wouldn't allow him to actively peruse a homosexual relationship. When the letter was found after his death the friend did say that he didn't feel the same way, but that he also felt sorry for the pain those feeling caused Hans.
@@stevenhiggins3055she essentially became a fairy type creature, and while doing good deeds and watching over the children she’d eventually be able to get a soul and enter heaven (in the little mermaid universe mermaids live 300 years but don’t have an immortal soul, so no mermaid afterlife) if during her travels she saw a good child the time it would take for her to get the soul is shortened, bad child, lengthened.
The girl pretending to have saved the prince is definitely based off of Marinette from Miraculous Ladybug. Literally has the same color palette and is a fashion designer.

Anyone who has read the original Little Mermaid story will not be surprised by the hair plot twist.
SPOILER FOR THE ORIGINAL H. C. ANDERSON STORY:
In the original story, the little mermaid sacrifices her tongue (yes, tongue), to the seawitch to gain legs. However each step she takes will feel like being cut by a 100 or 1000 knives (depends on the version). On the third day, if she fails to kiss the prince, she will turn to foam on the waves of the sea.
Her sisters gives up their hair to the seawitch to save their sister, an the seawhitch gives them a shell-knife that the little mermaid must use to kill the prince an she will turn back into a mermaid (and once again, depending on the version, regain or not regain her voice) and not turn into foam.
The seawitch is not an antagonist, she is just a trader/dealer in the original story. Also the reason for why bodyparts are so important to mermaids: They don't have souls. Mermaids live forever, but have no soul to enter the afterlife (atleast in the versions I've read)
So a tongue or hair is not something small. For all the mermaids truly have is their bodies. Also the sisters became fully bald. Like, no hair. And I think they could not grow anymore hair either. Also they, all of the sisters, had the most beautiful hair of all mermaids, and it was a big part of their self-identity.
You're description is very accurate and well done. The only thing that's different is that mermaids live a lifespan of ~300 years, not forever. They turn to seafoam when they experience death, but that's all these is they never go to heaven since they don't have immortal soul.
Great and tragic love story, deaaar!! 😿
Pretty much, but none of the versions I have read really have a three day time limit, that only seems to be the Disney version. The only thing I head was that is the prince gets married to someone else she will turn into sea foam on the morning after the wedding. So she could be human for years and all she needed was to have the Prince fall in love with her and marry her.
Damn imagine giving up all your hair for your sister to turn back into a mermaid, only to watch her turn into sea foams instead.
@@nunyabusiness3652That is tragic 😢

It’s concerning behavior that you put yourself through this but you are one of the boys in my opinion me and my fellow nerd peoples love you so much and it brought a smile to myself even though I just submitted an assignment at 11 pm
I love the fact that due to the weird animation everyone's constantly smiling somewhat sinisterly, so whenever a character moves closer to the camera it looks like they're threatening someone
The animation is like in some kind of limbo of it being horrendous, yet with some things looking unreasonably good for what it is. Like, some of the lip syncing and part of the expressions are just so fluid, but only in small parts. And while exaggerated, the body language isn’t too bad either.
It's like the creator got complaints that their facial animation was too muted and flat, so they made it more realistic but also cranked it up too high. So it's unnatural again but in a new, horrible way.
The sea witch’s eyebrows during the whole film: _- _-
God, the hands look they they just slapped a jpeg of a palm and fingers onto the models
I think I know the reason Sereia has tattoos and various inconsistencies in fashion, and it's hilarious. Apparently, to prevent theft, some creators of human vrchat models often put tattoos on the base skin as an identifier. Often, they're overtly elaborate sleeve and chest tattoos. If one were good at texturing, it'd be fairly easy to replace. in fact, I'm almost too sure that much of this movie's assets are very likely purchased assets from various 3D stores, just animated in-house. While ordinarily this wouldn't be a huge problem, they aren't animated very well, which makes it all very obvious they aren't using their own assets.
i was thinking these models looked like VR models and, if it's true motion capture was involved, they probably ARE VR models, but Asylum doesnt know how to work w/ VR and thats why the motions and mouth capture looked so bizarre and uncanny throughout a majority of the movie
King Triton is Jason Momoa in this and she actually looks like his daughter.😅

I do too, because while I remember watching and loving a ton of crappy mockbusters as a kid, that was in the VHS/DVD era. I don't get why anyone would buy this when they can just sit their kid in front of youtube or netflix.
The budget for this film was 99% to pay the voice actors. I'm sure they don't need to get a lot of sales to break even. The animator should have more self respect than to work for this shady company, but he seems happy in his little niche.

I have to give them props for trying to incorporate the original Hans Christian Andersen story instead of remaking the Disney version. I always enjoyed the fact that in the original the princes fiance really does save him from the beach and is a nice person as opposed to Ursula transforming herself to a woman and mind controlling Eric. I even enjoy that they tried to incorporate the scene where the sisters go to the sea witch for help and give their hair as payment. That said it doesn't seem like they were incorporated well or in a well written movie which makes me sad because it h0ad potential
I adore the Disney animated movie, but I really want a high budget adaptation of The Little Mermaid that sticks to the original plot and message of the fairy tale. Give me my death anxiety movie!
@@bobi200samatar6as a child I’d watch this animated series of Hans Christian Andersen stories, little mermaid included, it’s only about 20 minute episodes but they’re pretty faithful to the originals.
@@Nico_2202I think I remember something like that (though the only episode I remember was the ice queen one)
Any idea where I could find it?
@@liljatupsu I believe the English name is “the fairytaler” you should be able to find some clips on RUclips
If AI really did make this movie, it shows why making AI generated movies is a bad idea.
Given their previous animated content, it seems to be human-made, unfortunately.
AI-made a lot of things are a bad idea
@@EggieAnimates We use AI in a lot of our products (Photoshop uses it, for example) because, at the end of the day, it’s still a tool. What we really need is human involvement/guidance, not just letting it do what it wants without consequences.
I actually noticed that the outfit for "anakin" is actually the outfit, or at least the torso is actually Adewale from assassin's creed Rouge. Like it's even got the hidden blades too.
"Some day, all this will be yours"
"What, the curtains?"
You had the best setup for the joke here :D
I guess I'm in the minority of thinking that with actual time and decent money, this could look and sound SO much better. I like how they look, I like their designs. I think with a more professional approach to it all, things would actually look better; less rubberbanding, less ridiculous facial movement, smoother animation, etc etc. I really think it has a chance with investments or a proper studio.
I also agree but yeah we’re a minority lol
my thing is I know the budget of these things. Under 150K. Most gets paid to actors and since Mike does it all on his own he gets a big chunk. He was advertising making movies for 75-150K in a few months. Imagine if this dude even had a budget of 5 million and someone else wrote the script.
My farts are better than Saberspark’s farts 💨
Hard agree
5:39 why was the turtle manning while she thrusted😂😂
NGL I like it kind of. I mean I was trying to learn 3D animation and damn broo it was hard 😭 so I stopped because my PC ain't gonna process, it's and very slow at alllllll. As what I observed, this animation is better than those other ripoffs. I mean look at the shader (or shadows I mean) the hair clearly shows strands and not just curves like any ripoff and cheap animation would do. The skin shows some textures or structures. The Models man... They are good looking especially the mermaid king and the prince. What they lack of is Physics, realistic textures, shaders, liquid simulation, facial expressions and of course the most important is the script/plot. It is surprising how there is only one animator with that animation quality. I mean if you were a beginner, I could totally say this is the best beginner animation I've seen or like best ripoff. We also gotta know that animation is also hard as it require to be a good illustrator for storyboarding, interpreting the plot, setting up the scene, sculpting models and that's not even the half of it. You require high end equipments such as a computer, drawing tablet, video and 3d animation software, a team and you also consider the shaders, textures, physics and facial expressions. So I can say, it's not bad at all.
This movie, if it was made by AI, is honestly a perfect example as to why using actual artists is more beneficial for a project than using a computer to save money. Problem with AI is that there no passion or heart. A computer has no love for what it’s making. It just creates. And I can promise you that when you’re making an animated movie, tv show, or whatever, it will show. No one will watch a show if it’s just robotic and soulless.
AI just primitive rn, soon it will be able to replace humans and allow us consumers ultimate freedom is create anything we want!
Give it... Errr two decades minimum, optimistically a one decade should be enough but on the chance I'm wrong, two decades minimum unless our earth dies
I know that you may think that AI will be able to replace humans soon enough, but I can tell you that’s a road you don’t want to go down. Trust me. You will never ever get anything like your favorite shows ever again. Breaking Bad? Nope. Avatar: The Last Airbender? Nah. Friends? No way. Is that really a future of entertainment you’re looking forward to? Are you really okay with that? Cause I can tell you that’s a future I don’t want to live in.

The 'people' in charge of (far too) many studios aren't willing to deliver what their audiences want *now* - they'd rather (attempt to) push misandric and/or racist (read: anti-white) nonsense through false accusations/shaming and other foolishness, knowing full well it will all wind up in the media landfill. 9_9
Those who want more satisfying media will have to make it themselves (if they don't want to commission an indie animator/studio to do it).
And considering what's happening behind (way too many) closed doors, the dystopia you detest may sadly become reality so be prepared (to fight, if need be).

Dee Wallace isn't just the mom in E.T.- she's actually a pretty prominent figure in the horror community, starring in movies like Critters, Cujo, The Hills Have Eyes, etc. Seeing her in this is... wild. She ate though
Is it bad that I only know her as the mom from E.T 😂?

It's kinda upsetting cause most *not all* of the models are actually not that horrible, same with *some* of the voice acting, but as we see the movements on the models are just...cursed
