Wheeler Dealers Where Are They Now?

  • It's now over 20 years since the very first series of Wheeler Dealers was aired presented by Mike Brewer and Edd China, and we thought it was an opportune time to see if we could find out what happened to those early cars after they were sold.
In the Seventh Series, Mike & Edd had up to £5000 to buy and restore a classic car - remember cars and parts were a lot cheaper then....!
Originally WD was serialised in 30 minute episodes, with 2 per car, but from series 7 was a single 60 minute programme. These episodes featured:
1990 Ford Sierra Sapphire Cosworth Reg H721NTF
1979 Volkswagen Type 2 Bay Window Reg BYF955T

Great series and thank you for the update(s) ... 👍
Loved the original Wheeler Dealers ... it really appealed to people like myself who 'did up' cars on a budget for a hobby. I learnt quite a bit from watching Edd's mechanical segments ...
I started losing interest when Edd and Mike became based in the US. Then when Edd left I watched one episode without Edd and NEVER watched again ... 😒

Another enjoyable video with a pretty good result overall. Many commenters have picked up on the WD lies point of view, I guess people like me who remember watching the very first episode thinking it was the best bit of TV I had ever seen can feel a little cheated. I have met Mike Brewer a few times at the NEC car shows and he was a really nice bloke, but that is only a minute snapshot. I once felt that it was possibly Mikes job to deliver the lies in a way that they weren't too obvious on behalf of the production company who came up with the numbers and everything related, but then I heard that Mike actually owned the company so that didn't really get him off the hook. I know it will be much harder or even impossible to look at any of the American series, but I bet the fakery on those is off the scale.

Funny how at 3:00 onwards, you talk about passionford and the Sapphire Cosworth. I thought i was losing my marbles, as i was adamant that i remembered a post about that car being broken for parts. Then come. 5:55 the exact post about it being broken pops up lol. (relieved i wasn't losing my mind 🤣) I was frequently using passionford at the time, when i had my Sapphire Cosworth and Fiesta RS Turbo etc.

Why are people surprised that a TV car show is not entirely truthful or accurate on the narrative, repairs and other aspects. It’s entertainment, nothing more. Wheeler dealers still had better standards than Pimp my ride, consider yourself to be fortunate for watching something that actually had a bit of reality and truth in it!

I've often wondered what happened to a lot of these cars. To be fair, the show did well for viewers and we must remember it was TV. Quite often cars were sold to members of the crew for viewing purposes to show it sold, but then sold later to real buyers. That's how I assumed it really went

From what I'm finding as time went on things got more honest with the buying/selling element of the show where they could be. Probably they were thinking some idiot would turn up years later on youtube looking for these cars... 😂

Can’t stand Mike brewer, remember when they totalled up the costs but there were parts they had not included, I’d say apart from Ed not getting paid any more than £140 for his time they actually lost money big time on it.

If you looked closely during that episode the Sapphire Cosworth continued to blow out blue smoke after the extensive head work to remedy that very issue, The same problem also occurred when Wheeler Dealers bought and sold a green Mk2 Jag ,it suffered blue smoke when Mike bought it and supposedly repaired during the episode but clearly continued to blow blue smoke after repair as they drove it around Oxford! TBF though Edd China has stated that all cars bought during the series had to have extra work carried out and parts replaced that were never mentioned in thr episodes because of legal reasons , every car had to be scrutinised and any repair no matter how minor had to be carried out, there was never any real profit to be made during the series for this reason.

Cossies around that time were broken for spares a lot, so much so there are so few rwd sapphs left, they were worth more in parts than complete, often the shell lives on although cossies led a very hard life and the premiums people ask for now are a joke. That particular car wasn’t a great example anyway but still sad so many perfectly good cars were broken up.

The Cosworth definately has one of the most convoluted histories yet - from bare shell to mot'd in 11days, there's got to be an interesting story behind it.
I'd wager money on it still being around as it's last mot didn't mention anything severe and it's worth far too much to just let it rot in open air.

Wheeler dealers for me was about firstly watching hands on car shows with my granda, learning things in every episode which could help when maintaining an old second hand car. The show also used to visit many a small specialist workshop showing how things were done in days gone by. How to repair instead of replace etc. So all this back story nonsense makes zero difference to the show.
