The acting was top notch in this episode! Mike or Jonathan deserved that Emmy no doubt! Truly a great backstory for a great character! It explains so much for mikes character
We finally get a glimpse into Mike's pain. Behind the brave mask he wore all breaking bad lies a broken man who knows the one thing he can never do is "set things right."( Like he said in El Camino.) He feels responsible for Kaylee and his daughter in law. Jonathan Banks just killed it in this episode. Easily his most powerful performance he's delivered yet. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
That trick to unlock the cardoor with a string was something they taught us in the Boy Scouts back when they also gave out merit badges for Nuclear Power.
Been looking forward to this one! One of my favorites episodes of TV- period, I can almost recite Mike's monologue word for word. Love how Max was like 🤷🏾♀️ about him killing the cops, LOL.
You guys hit the nail right on the head; seeing someone like Mike break down like that always hits hard. Every time I get to the "I broke my boy." line I always tear up and yes, what happened to Matty does put into perspective why Mike tried to help Jesse so much to make up for how, in his mind, he failed to save his son.
Jonathan Banks is a phenomenal actor and without a doubt deserved that Emmy for his performance in this episode.
And his range! His Radar Range! He had a cameo in Airplane! taking the temperature of a microwaved turkey.
@@jdbertel33 Also one of the cops in Gremlins. I was obsessed with Gremlins as a kid and finding out that was him was such a delight.
Even the person that beat him out for that Emmy, Peter Dinklage, has publicly said it should have gone to Banks!
OG mike he is such a tragic character i love mike so much.
My grandpa was very charismatic but also very stoic like Mike and would do anything for us. But he fought in North Korea. He lost a lot of close friends on both sides and had survivors guilt. He only talked about it once, but It was one of the only times I've seen him break. He felt that he would be judged for it in the end.
Johnathan Banks is the most talented actor in the entire series. I'm so glad BCS provides the back stories behind all of these great characters.
The reason why Mike couldn't tell her about the 2 murders is because a secret that is shared between two people only works if one of the people is dead.
There are a lot of great lines in this show. There are a lot of bone chilling lines. There are a lot of sad lines, “Broke my boy” is one of those that achieves all three.
I’ve watched through the whole series twice, and I watch a ton of reaction videos to it and they always include that line in their recap of this episode. I’ve never been able to hear it without breaking at least a little.
2:06 "There's a lot we don't know about Mike." Immediately after Mike goes into the ladies' room and buys a tampon. 😂
We finally understand why *Mike Ehrmantraut* is so tough, we finally get some context why Mike has that level of sophistication because he's from Philadelphia!
People from Philly are kinda tough, ruthless, & rugged, it finally makes sense!
Through out Better Call Saul show, there are even more DEADLY edge of seat Mike Ehrmantraut scenes! This is Nothing!! 😉
In Breaking Bad, when they shot the first scene introducing the characters Kaylee and her Mom, Johnathan Banks went up to the director and said “That’s my granddaughter, but that (Kaylee’s Mom) is not my daughter”. That’s how he felt the scene, as written, should be played out. He didn’t have any real idea on what the story was with Kaylee’s father who would then be Mike’s son and didn’t seem to be around, but that’s how the scenes with Mike’s relatives were written & acted from then on: a close, loving relationship with his actual granddaughter, more reserved, maybe not entirely comfortable relationship with a daughter-in-law he wasn’t as close to, and a huge Unacknowledged Elephant in the room regarding the missing father/husband/son. Those were the building blocks from which this backstory were carved out, although I suspect Banks & the writers had already sketched out the major pieces of the story by the time Mike is called into be interviewed by Hank and they both decide they’re not particularly interested in going over Mike’s “eventful” parting of ways with the Philadelphia Police Department, preferring to just leave the audience hanging with the insinuation that there’s a juicy story there.
*Whats crazy is, Johnathan Banks was known for his comedic roles before the BB universe*
3:20 that's the face of knowing something that somebody else doesn't know, but you can't spoil anything. Just gotta wait until they catch up before you can breathe easy.
Jonathon Banks kills it in this episode
if you notice the way mike aim at the cop is the same way walter aim at jack.
The confused look on your face when dad said Mike killed Matty lmaoo
Yea, I get that look about every other episode! 😂
Max
@@RedStaticReacts guessing the plot is part of the fun of watching anything. Can't win em all!
This episode was written by Gordon Smith. He joined Breaking Bag as a production assistant midway through the series before he became a writing assistant the next season. When Better Call Saul went into production, four of the regular Breaking Bad writers returned for this series (Vince Gilligan, Peter Gould, Thomas Schnauz and Gennifer Hutchison) with Bradley Smith and Gordon Smith joining the writing staff. Bradley Smith would leave after one episode (Alpine Shepherd Boy), while Gordon Smith would go on to write 12 episodes for this series. This was his first professionally written episode and was nominated for 'Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series' at the Emmys. He would go on to receive 3 Emmy nominations for the same category over the series' run (this episode, a season 3 episode and a season 5 episode). He would also go on to direct two episodes and become a co-executive producer in the final two seasons.
Breaking Bag was a great show almost as good as The Walking Deed or Game of Throws.
@@bradcarver8127 "Almost as good"? It blows both of those shows out of the water!
@MLennholm
I think you’re missing the joke in my comment
@@bradcarver8127 Ah, my bag...
Fun fact about the Emmys was that Peter Dinklage who won that category also commended Jonathan Banks acting
I watch hundreds of reaction channels. I've seen probably over 50 different channels react to breaking bad and better call saul. You guys are in my top 5. Love the commentary and thought and passion you guys have for these shows. Thank you :)
At 3:18 it's funny you give him that look, but I genuinely had the same thought. I didn't even know who Matty was yet and the exact relationship between Matty's wife and Mike yet. I thought it was possible that she was his daughter and Matty was the husband that Mike had to kill or something. Crazy how going back and rewatching it how different your train of thought is.
Episode also explains why Mike is tryna provide for Kayleigh in BB
Oh absolutely
I'm not so certain it was excessive. The quantity of camp stove fuel in the home screams "Meth lab". Couple that with the strange behavior of someone who can't come outside, except he did (liar) and the fusebox being shredded, they had every right to ask him to open the door. Reasonable cause all over the place.
This is a truly important episode for Mike. Tells us why he is the way he is to a degree. Just an incredible episode. Jonathan Banks should have won the Emmy for this episode. Great reaction guys, have a great rest of your day and take care!
even the guy who won the award said mike should had got it.
@@greed42o yeah. Better Call Saul isn’t the awards darling Breaking Bad was. My guess being they gave so many awards to Breaking Bad, they didn’t want to seem biased towards that world. So far Better Call Saul has been nominated for 46 Emmys and hasn’t won any. Because of how the last season was split, it’s eligible again this year, but I’m not getting my hopes up for a big victory for Better Call Saul.
@@Jared_Wignall yea it was alot of people agreed better call saul is better then breaking bad just because its has more action dosent make it better.
In the real world, cops are the first to tell their families not to talk to the cops. I got that advice from my Dad who was a city cop. My kids got that advice from their Dad and his-both retired now.
Jonathan lost the Emmy to Peter Dinklage in Game of Thrones. As much as I love this episode (and even though Peter himself said Jonathan should have won), I wasn't mad. They were both extremely deserving, IMO.
Love you guys’ reactions. Fun rewatching 2 of my all time favorite shows with you!
Definitely one of my favourite episodes with Mike hands down. Jonathan Banks really brought his absolute A game into this episode.
It also adds a whole new level of depth towards his relationship with Jesse as well! Even in the beginning, with Mike’s initial frustrations with him, I have a feeling Mike (even if he didn’t realize it) was kind of projecting his own son onto Jesse, with Jesse being in the state he was in throwing his life away. At the same time, it gave Mike another opportunity, a second chance. By Breaking Bad, Mike had lost most of his humanity that held him together, but Jesse helped him recover some of that lost humanity.
Mike might’ve failed to save his son, but he was able to save Jesse. Even Jesse choosing Alaska was thanks to Mike. So in a sense, Mike helped Jesse escape.
Yess!! My dudes. Had a really rough few days and this is just what I needed. Perfect pacing of uploads.I dunno if you're just doing it whenever but it's beenoptimal so far. Appreciate it all.
Thank you!
This is my favorite Mike episode. My 2nd favorite is “Half Measures” in Breaking Bad. Great reaction!
What an episode
Great episode and very cool reaction
You were really paying attention
Thanks!
Been looking forward to this since the first time I heard you mention that you’d do BCS. Season 2 of BB maybe?
Banks’ performance is off the charts and this is my favorite episode in the Vince Gillian-verse.
I really enjoy y'all's perspectives. Good reactions, fellas.
I'm catching up on your episodes right now but I used to be a bit of a scoundrel in the early 90s and back then rope trick worked on some models. Also with Volkswagens and Audis of that day you could slip a thin screwdriver between the rubber ring around the door handle and the metal of the door and just flip the lock up, real smooth like. Jangle some keys in the same hand and someone standing a few feet away from you might think you're opening your own car just like nothing.
This was top notch.
mike is such a loved character we miss you buddy i just know he is looking down on jesse proud of the man he became
my favorite episode, it makes me cry every time
Can't wait for more from you two! This show is even better than Breaking Bad in some ways.
There are gonna be alot of reoccuring characters from the last show so keep an eye out!
I think this one of the best episodes in the show
Thanks!
Better Call Saul won 0 emmys. Travesty.
This is why in my opinion, Better Call Saul is greater than breaking bad. Fleshed out characters. Deeper backstory. Better character development. And so on.
Amazing episode
Hey guys love the videos! After you guys finish Better Call Saul, Can you guys start a Stranger Things reaction series?
Got a lot of suggestions and Stranger Things is on the list.
The sad thing is that throughout the run of the show, Better Call Saul went 0-48 with regards to Emmy wins and nominations.
The Emmy's are a joke, they've always been. Remember how in the 90s Jason Alexander was the only one of the Seinfeld quartet to not get one even though he was easily the most deserving.
This is the episode that made me hate Walt more for killing Mike.....
One of the best episodes in the Breaking Bad Universe. Thanks for your reaction.
shout out to the vet he doesn’t get enough credit played by joe derosa hilarious comic
It’ll be hard to forget, but remember this episode when you get to the series finale.
episode 5 was supposed to be called jello but the name was copyrighted
I know people don't like hearing about defunding the police, but Chuck getting tazered is kind of what it's all about. We give them hundreds of millions of dollars to do training for dealing with people with mental issues, and all they do is ignore it and just taze or shoot them instead. The point about defunding is stop wasting those hundreds of millions training cops for how to do with mental issues if they refuse to actually do it, and just give that money to a different group specialized in dealing with it.
you are absolutely preaching !! 100 percent agree
i broke my boy 😢
yay first
nope
Ooohhh, third….
I always seem to mention this about this episode. Despite being totally unrelated to Walter, it increases my dislike of Walter so much. The foundation of guilt that was a driving factor in Mike's steadfast devotion to his family was something Mike deserved to see his son's legacy grow up over carrying for that long. Man, among many other things down the road, it only proves just how destructive Walter really was to so many things that had been going on long before him.
I went into this show fully expecting a shady lawyer series about Saul's antics and I did in some respects, but mostly I got a show about how much I abhor Walter White and what a unique and perfect reincarnation of the breaking bad universe it was. Vince is a master of the craft, the Tarantino of television.
