Jonathan Banks' performance in this episode is out of this world. Seriously one of the best pieces of acting I have ever seen. What an actor. And what a character Mike is.
"Wow, that last scene made me cry again." Yup. And for me, the first time he unloads on Stacey - "My son wasn't dirty!" - makes me lose it even moreso. It's one of the most powerful explosions of emotional pain I've ever witnessed in theater/film/television. I lose it every time. EVERY time. I don't even have to see it. The scene can just pop into my mind walking down the sidewalk and people passing me by will worry about the guy ballin' his out that just passed them on the street. True story...
Peter Dinklage, the one who did win that Emmy, wonders that too, because his very first words in his acceptance speech upon getting the Emmy was praising Jonathan Banks
So good… and yes, this is one of many hikes up small peaks on the way up to the summit…. The complexities of this series…. Really looking forward to experiencing this story again with y’all!!
This is one of the best episodes in the entire series imo. It's like you guys said, the writing...unbelievable. And Jonathan Banks' acting, insane. Oh, and also, yeah, I don't get people saying the show is slow at the start. I think that's just people assuming some reactors won't be able to appreciate the more sophisticated writing, which is obviously not the case for you guys.
This is the episode where we first started hearing the whispers. That this show may actually be better than Breaking Bad. I still don't know where I fall on that debate. I vacillate a lot depending on which I'm watching. But the fact that it's close enough to be a question? We are all in for a treat
Its absolutely a "debate" where you could say either and be right. Breaking Bad is my favourite mostly because its more action packed and exciting and I love the Walt and Jesse dynamic and everything. I love the filmmaking of Breaking Bad however Better Call Saul perfected pretty much every technique used in Breaking Bad and went further in so many ways. The characters are arguably deeper and the subtlety and intricate nature of Better Call Saul's storytelling is some of the best ever I'd say. And when Better Call Saul does incorporate the more action heavy elements its done incredibly well. It also completely recontextualises elements of Breaking Bad in unexpected and interesting ways.
Both very VERY good shows BUT 'BCS' suffers from being a prequel show. We already know how Mike's story ends. We don't know his back story and how he ended up being the "fixer" guy in 'BB". So it is very interesting to get his backstory. The problem is that throughout 5 seasons of 'BCS' whenever Mike is in any sort of peril, we already know he doesn't get killed here because we know what happens later in 'BB' The same applies to Tuco also for example. And the same applies to EVERY prequel show/film ever made. They can still be excellent viewing BUT there is no getting around that one fundamental problem of already knowing what happens to certain characters.
@@Mantis_Toboggan_MD.What is nice though is that they also did a good job of introducing and incorporating interesting new characters whose fates are not certain other than the fact that they aren't in Breaking Bad. And even with Jimmy himself, his fate is also uncertain because we're also following how his story goes after BB.
It's no contest in the aspect of filming, quality shots, etc. that BCS is better. They just got better, more experienced. Character development gets the nod for BCS too, since 2 of the greatest characters in this universe are only in it. As for plot, BB had the disadvantage of having to use familiar tropes to get viewer's attention, ie. Jesse getting clothes thrown at him by the topless neighbor. BCS already had a fan following ready for their product. They didn't have to waste any time sucking people in.
To paraphrase something I read lately: an interesting moral dilemna (within a story) isn't a choice between right and wrong --that's too clear cut. It's interesting when it's a choice between two wrongs or between two good things. The writers of these shows do a great job of presenting those types of dilemnas. Things that make you think and debate
I love your guys' reaction to this episode. Especially kailyn getting emotional with Mike's story. I felt the same way. It broke me a little to empathize with all the pain Mike went through telling that story. And you 2 are VERY VERY good at figuring out where the writers are taking you. Thank you for your reaction to this (probably my favorite TV series of all time)
Jonathan Banks killed it this episode. Such a sad backstory for Mike Ehrmantraut. Was this Jonathan's best performance in 'Breaking Bad" and "Better Call Saul" ( so far ), Eric & Kailyn ?
And they're about to find out many other glorious episodes of the show will be written by him... A precious talent amongst a team with the greatest ! I can't wait to find out what he does after Better Call Saul.
Mike was my favorite character in Breaking Bad. I absolutely loved the backstory and screen time for Mike on this show. This makes it all the more sad knowing how Mike ends up getting taken out.
I like to challenge people who say Mike has a close relationship with Jimmy to pay attention and see if Mike ever calls him by his first name, whatever he goes by, once in the entire BCS series.
"I broke my son and the bastards killed him anyway!" That line tears my heart out of my chest!!! The way that Johnathan Banks delivers it is masterful. What acting?!!!
The idea for this came from Jonathan Banks back when they first introduced his granddaughter in Breaking Bad. He said to Vince Gilligan, "that's my granddaughter... that's not my daughter. And whatever darkness Mike has is because of what happened to his son." (Not sure if that quote is exact). Gilligan and Peter Gould held onto that and elaborated here.
Another excellent reaction, thank you! Im really enjoying this and you're quickly becoming my favourite reaction channel (until Eric said "I do declare" - kidding lol). I'd argue that this show is as good as, or objectively 'better' than Breaking Bad - i know the tone, atmosphere is different, the themes and subject matter are slightly different too, but I absolutely love this show. I know you're weeks ahead on your patreon, but you have absolutely no idea how amazing this show will get. Very excited for it! Ps, i know you guys base what you react to on what your patrons say, but considering adding this show called "Severance" if you haven't already seen it. Excellent show, excellent in every category and a novel premise. An intelligent show for intelligent people. Anyway, see you on the next one
Just one of my absolute favorite episodes of the whole series. Mikes character is just so great, and Jonathan Banks kills it. Love rewatching this episode all the time it’s just perfect. Great reaction!
Mike's "I broke my boy" monologue never fails to make me cry. The fact Jonathan Banks' didn't win the emmy for this episode was a crime in my opinion (well, the bigger crime is that this show was nominated 53 times and never won any of them). I say that Mike's "No Half Measures" monologue in Breaking Bad is my favourite Mike moment but this is a REALLY close second, to the point I flip back and forth between favourite of the two.
This episode gives a different spin on Mike's reaction to Todd killing Drew Sharp. He also had a son that was killed by criminals because they feared "he knew too much".
Mike hid a loaded gun inside the car, then put an empty gun in his pocket. He knew they would take the unloaded gun and try to use it on him and so he was able to take the loaded gun and use it on them.
You're idea of Mike and Saul relationship is somehwat accurate. You'll see how we get there. A lot is yet to happen!!! Also this only part of Mike motivation you see in BB. You haven't seen completely how he gets hooked up with Gus.
"Its like killing Caesar... everyones guilty." Guys this line was cleaver just in its own right...but It suddenly occurred to me that this is likely a subtle reference to the actress's role in HBOs' 'Rome'. I've never put that together before now even though I have seen BCS many times, and immediately recognized the actress for Mikes daughter in law for her role as Octavia the first time I saw BCS.
To be fair Mike was Saul's guy in Breaking Bad up until he protected Jesse and Walt from Gus. They weren't exactly best friends but they worked together pretty well. Something also to keep in mind is right now we are seeing Mike develop something of a friendship with Jimmy McGill, doesn't necessarily mean he'd have that same dynamic with "Saul Goodman".
This episode is just the beginning of masterpieces episodes. Jonathan Banks acting is just masterclass. The character stuff is even deeper than Breaking bad, and probably any other show, even if there is less action compared.
Five-O is sort of like BCS’s version of Crazy Handfull of Nothing (BrBa season 1 episode 6). It’s that big explosive episode of the first season that really lets you know what you’re in for with the series. It’s not like this all the time, of course. This series plays with genre a lot. But it just sets a tone, y’know? It’s going to make you laugh, make you cry, make you cheer, make you cringe, make you puzzle over mysteries and mystify you with puzzles. There’ll be hijinks and capers and shootouts and pick pockets and flashbacks and flash forwards and it’s just a wild ride y’all. Enjoy it.
The show never really draws attention to it, but the things we learn about Matty and Mike really recontextualizes how we see Mike evolve to have a soft spot for Jessie in Breaking Bad. Jessie and Mike's son both are guys with a big heart entering a corrupting industry and being used by everyone around them, and it's heartbreaking to put together that maybe the reason why Mike had such a soft spot for Jessie towards the end is that connection. There's more to this aspect of Mike later, but for now you can definitely see that connection with what we know about how he changed with Jesse
This is just episode 5 of season ONE!!! In Breaking Bad, we were only at "Gray Matter" at this point of the show. That's what I love about this show. You hit the floor running right out of the gate!!!
A lot of people use their phones while watching movies and TV shows, and a lot of people have a short attention span, and Breaking Bad is more appealing to a younger audience because it has more action, while BCS is more dialogue- and monologue-driven. Breaking Bad is a masterpiece; it walked so Better Call Saul could run, but I do think BCS is better than Breaking Bad. The only aspect that I give to BB over BCS, and it's only in the storytelling aspect, because at first it was slightly better paced, but literally you can argue that BCS surpassed BB in every other aspect. I do not understand why Jonathan Banks was a bit actor in things. He is SO GOOD. He was meant to only be in one episode in Breaking Bad. ANd he killed it.
