German boyfriends Parents are AMAZING. I think they are so cute and like to make sure they don't intrude on their son's life. It is also really cute how Uyen and her family are just so random and call all the time. both are lovely and work.
I have Patents like that, too. No news are good news. If someone calls, it could be because something bad happens, or they just want to invite to something. But the parents of my husband (also German) call or write almost everyday, and if they couldnt talk to you in one week, they will spontaniously come by, without asking...
But with her family, no one is really listening or there. It is just calling but nothing is ... intimate. I think Asian cultures are full of show offs. I mean, I am half Turkish and people will do things because it is [part of the culture] or [how things should be] when they don't really care much or even say much. You could be in the middle of a crisis but go to visit your relatives and show nothing because you are not really that transparent or open to them. Asian cultures are like that. It is very European to be open about who you are and what you want or what is going in your life. It is also very European to refuse to have a relationship with someone toxic to you. In Asian cultures, you tolerate everyone and it is uncommon for you to confront anyone.
Please remember when speaking English with a native speaker that the vast majority of us are likely to be impressed that you are able to converse with us in what is a second language for you and really appreciate the effort on your part. As many have said here, you both speak English very well

Wouldn't it be their third language? Vietnamese, German, and then English? Unless she learned German and English co-currently, while he did the same with Vietnamese and English? Either way they speak better English than I do and I'm monolingual.
And here is an example of how a native speaker can easily make mistakes too and that's okay because communication is more important than grammar/pronunciation rules. *Absolutely no offence meant here. As ESL people we are made so conscious of these small things that I couldn't help notice it.
As a native English speaker, I would never have corrected you on the word dish, as it is used here (USA) quite a bit. Also, don't be self-conscious. You fluently speak at least 2 languages and understand a 3rd. Languages are difficult to learn after age 4 or so. You are both easy to understand.
The comment about "dish" touched me because my late husband and I called a certain item by different names. I said bowl and he said dish. So we decided to make up a different name for it. He said "daisy" 😂😊 so for years we had small daisy and large daisy to set our table and eat from. I loved our special language.
I agree 100% with you Uyen on subbed vs dubbed. Trying to listen to dubbed hurts! It took a little time to adjust my eyes to watching the screen while also reading subtitles but it was worth the effort. Now even when I watch something in my native language, I like to have subtitles. I agree that you miss out on a lot of nuance and emotion if you don’t hear the native language. No matter of it is a language I’ve heard a lot, or brand new, I turn up the volume so I can hear the tones of the voices while reading the subtitles. It adds so much
I also agree. German dubbing may be better than other countries dubbing, but the problem is that dubbing will almost always be worse than the original. I just started watching Dragonball Super, and there was this 1 episode for which I couldn't find the subtitled episode and had to watch the German dub. It was so bad! Goku and Vegeta sound like they are voiced by the same person, that's how little effort the voice actors put in trying to portray their characters.

I was in Germany when they won in 1990. German people took to the streets and were drinking, yelling, singing. They were sitting on top of bus stops or whatever else they could climb on and the streets were blocked from all the people walking around. It was an amazing experience to witness.
Honestly you guys speak close to fluent English. I have no difficulty understanding either of you. Be proud of yourselves. Speaking nearly fluent in English (a language not native to you) is impressive 👍
As a native English speaker and an English teacher, I don't see the problem with calling a plate a dish. It seems perfectly natural to me. A dish is just a more general word for anything you can eat from. A dish can be a plate, saucer, bowl, platter, etc. Your English is great!
A tip as someone who also gets migraines from loud noises: noise cancelling headphones are a coexistence saving invention. Nobody has to feel bad or self conscious (😉) about their needs 💗
or earplugs which don't entirely block the sound, but dull it. you can get ones where it dulls all the busy background noise, and reduces how piercing the main voice is, but you can still hear the person
6:49 I can confirm the part about tonal languages! I'm German and used to talking rather quietly. When I started taking Mandarin lessons, the teachers always encouraged us to speak up a lot. They told us it's important to alter our talking style so that people can hear our tones well. Also they were the sweetest teachers ever. They always gave us confidence pep talks to talk louder 🥺

I'm with german boyfriend on the scheduling phone calls debate! I care about my parents but my own life is very busy and I want to make sure we have actual quality time together when we talk and not have it rushed while I'm at work or shopping or something. So I would rather have dedicated time to them than rushed or casual conversations randomly occurring when one of us might be too busy to talk properly
Same! The older generation is more likely to do spontaneous phone calls because back before internet and instant messaging that was the only option, but I made very clear to my parents that I want phone calls scheduled because I don't want to interrupt whatever plans I'm busy with when they call, IMO it makes more sense to have a dedicated time slot to spend with each other. Can you imagine your phone ringing during a job interview or even just when you're asleep, no way.
I just don't understand this, if you're busy, then tell them you'll call them back...? I don't get what's difficult about that. If I'm out with friends and I got a call from my dad, if it wasn't an emergency I'd tell him I was out with friends rn and I'd call him back later or tomorrow. Same if I'm in the store. It seems like half the time I call him he's out at a restaurant, so then he just calls me back when he gets home. I have no idea what I'm gonna be doing or feel like doing at 2 pm this Saturday or whatever time. I understand being busy and wanting to ensure that your calls are quality time talking to them, but I'm way too spontaneous to schedule something like a phone call. I honestly hate scheduling anything 😅
I'm German. I don't schedule phone calls like that often but I also don't really spontaneously call anyone. I'd write to them that I want to talk, and depending on how busy both of us are we can talk immediately, schedule a day or even schedule a certain time. Really just depends how busy me and the other person are. When I was in South Korea for a year I talked with my parents over Zoom every few days and we'd just write a message, not schedule it out. But I think when you're more spontaneous you really have to accept that the other person will just not answer if they don't have time. Some people also call spontaneously but if it's inconvenient for me I'll just not accept the call and write a message. If it's actually urgent they'll have to write me that it's urgent. Feeling like you always have to accept a call just incase it is urgent would be way too stressful.

You don't call when you know or presume them to be busy with something, nor do you call late if you know they're not up. Sometimes I wanna call my dad around 9 pm his time, but I check to make sure he's still up first. I don't want to wake him up because I know if he heard the phone ring he'd feel obligated to answer not because he thinks somethings wrong but because he wouldn't want me to think he didn't wanna talk to me

Native English speaker here - trust me, you both speak English really well. And even here in the US, from one region to another, there are differences in speaking like "plate" vs "dish".
The words awful and awesome are very close together! As a US English speaker, I’ve caught myself almost saying the wrong word, snd they’re total opposite meanings! Ugh!

Vietnamese mobile connection is absolutely amazing! I said this last time I was there and I was in a national park just outside Son La, nothing around for miles, but I had better connectivity than I did at my home in the UK.
I think on the compliments German Boyfriend is giving general compliments ("You're awesome") and Uyen is looking for something more specific ("The way you edited that video was awesome"). So your "course" could just be looking for more specificity, more detailed things to compliment. As in, if you give a compliment, follow up with why you think or feel that way. "That crochet project looks great" becomes "That crochet project looks great. I really like the colors you chose and how they look good together." Good luck! Loving the podcast!
I live in the US since 2012 and my English is not perfect at all! I had more non native people criticizing my English and accent than native speakers, Americans usually are very happy saying I’m doing well and they like my accent. Your English is great, totally clear 😊
In the US we have so many native accents and colloquialisms that non-native speakers are easily identified by their strict adherence to grammar rules. You both are easy to understand and fun to watch and listen to.

I had a close friend from Germany, and she would complain to me about how much German's complain (eg. when we would watch a German movie, the characters would complain a lot then she would complain about them complaining), and that's why she left Germany. But she always complained to me about everything.

Uyen is right. We Germans do not complain to much, we make to few compliments. When I moved from Germany to Ireland I was overwhelmed with the compliments I got everywhere. Then I realised - they give compliments to everyone. Even so: It feels good to get a compliment. By the way, you are very lovely togehter, witty and insightful. I like your dress and your vest and GBs nose piercing goes really well with his outfit.
I think because a lot of us start to learn languages at school we are too focused on saying things right. But my experience with immigrants to my country and when I was working abroad, is that lots of people communicate very well with "bad" English, and lots of people with "good" English can't communicate very well. Also, it can be so much fun communicating with a very bad mixture of languages! Good memories.

Unwritten rule with my family, if you call without scheduling ahead then it has to be an emergency. If my parents call during work, then someone died. Otherwise we schedule a call.

We definitely have our differences, like my family is very much about helping each other and being there for each other, while his family is more you do your own thing, I do mine and we talk once in a blue moon. My husband and I met in college, but then I moved to a different state and so we were long distance for like 3-4 years prior to getting married. It was definitely tough to be long term but it made our relationship stronger. I was also recently away for 7 weeks and I think any time we are away we remember why we enjoy being together and it make us appreciate each other more.
What i love about this podcast is that it is honest, there are disagreements and difference of opinions, but it is treated as normal cause they are two different individuals who grew up in two different cultures ❤
I'm Indonesian and we grew up with subtitles. That's how we learned foreign languages. Really help us with learning listening and vocabulary. Watching foreign films with subtitle is easy.
To make things more complicated: In American English you can say something is “awful pretty,” which means really pretty. Also, until it entered slang in the 20th century, awesome was mostly used in a negative sense. “The awesome might of the bomb…” It literally means inspiring awe, which can be negative or positive. German Boyfriend may be pleased to know that awful used to mean the same thing…
🤣 I work for a Vietnamese fella and his wife is from Hong Kong. When they start talking in the kitchen, I can never tell if they're angry or happy until the end. If they laugh, it's good. If he throws his cleaver down on the butcher block, he's angry.

My dad born in Germany my mom born in Canada. Dad has always been serious strict and can't stand people who talk loud naturally (especially men) he has been a grouch guy all his life and mom is the sweetest thing ever. They are of different times and unfortunately open honest communication like the two of you have would have made such a positive difference in their marriage and our family. Being a first generation American born to my family assimilation was priority. I grew up hearing both German and French but was not taught or spoken to in either language only English which none of my grandparents were very good at. I hate how much of my families culture was seen not important over fitting in in America

That is just my guess, as my sister and I have questioned why and have yet to get any answers other than we didn't want to confuse you ( my grandfather was 🇺🇦 but spoke German and little English and was fluent in 7 languages total but could only write or read crylic) The crazy part is im fairly fluent in Spanish growing up around my best friends family who was Puerto Rican and I learned by immersion easily. It was the 70s/80s so things were very tense until the collapse of sov union was raw and real for my grandparents who could finally visit their families without fear of persecution under any soviet rule. It was only then that they felt comfortable to embrace the culture more through the years
Native English speaker here who calls plates “dishes” all the time. Honestly in school the ESL students often did better in English class than native speakers because we hadn’t studied grammar the way they had. Maybe I was taught proper grammar as a small child, but by the time I was forming memory English class was dedicated to reading books and talking about them.
I totally agree with Uyen about the subtitles! But I'm Finnish and we've always had subtitles. (Kids have dubbed programs.) It's definitely one of the main reasons why Finns are very good English speakers. And other languages too, like I remember watching Marienhof, a german soap-opera, in the 90's and it clearly got my grade in german at school to get better.
18:30 me and my French husband met in Korean, Koreans absolutely LOVE to make appreciative noises when they are eating, and my French husband picked up the habit, or maybe he'd always done it or always wanted to but was a bit self-conscious, 😉, till he moved to Korea. anyways, we move back to France and his mom, other family members too, but especially his mom, yelled at him to be quiet and don't make mmmm sounds when he ate or "ah" sounds when he drank, and that he was now in France and not Korea and "we don't do that here in France".......... one of the many instances where I've realized the French are too strict with their food etiquette, lol
As a native English speaker, you're both perfectly understandable. I don't tend to correct my foreign friends when they're speaking unless they ask me to, not only because I understand them, but because I think it's really cool and unique to hear my language spoken in a different way.

The point u made about speaking English with non-native speakers…totally relatable to me. I feel the same with German. I’m living and working in Germany and everytime I have to speak German with a German or someone who has German as their mother tongue, I’m completely stressed out and I start to stutter. But when I chit chat with a foreigner in German, I’m more comfortable and I can speak more fluently.
I talk to my children at set times too. Anything in between would be very important or urgent. That way I know they are not busy, or asleep, or shopping etc.
I agree with Uyen about not liking foreign films to be dubbed. I always want to hear the actors speaking in their native language... otherwise, I feel I'm missing out on the whole experience of the film. My boyfriend and I live together, but we are both busy and doing our own thing a lot of the time, so we will often randomly call each other without planning. Just to chat. If we’re in the middle of something we won’t answer, so our rule is that if we call more than once it’s an emergency. But if you miss just one call, it’s okay we just felt like chatting lol.

I'm a native English speaker but have lots of friends who aren't native English speakers and I think you're worrying too much. You both are excellent at speaking English, you very rarely make any mistakes and when you do, you know you're making a mistake and easily make what you're trying to say understand. Most English speakers are very forgiving to people trying to speak English because most of us can only speak English and maybe a few sentences in another language. We admire you, your skills and your bravery in speaking in a non native language.
You are both at a high proficiency level of English conversation. I'm originally from England and I have taught English as a Foreign Language. You are fluent and easily understood. It always impresses me that the two of you have chosen to access the wider English sm platforms in a non native language. Besides you are a genuinely beautiful couple and the absolute joy of the entire sm world! I mean that most sincerely. As someone in an inter-hemisphere marriage for 35 years ( so far ) you have all the right ingredients for a lifetime of love. ❤
Your accents are lovely and very understandable, anyway, the most important thing is that you have no problem communicating with each other and the people around you!! The only time when I think you'll need to come up with some other way is when and if you decide to get a kid

as a native English speaker, I understand both of you perfectly, and even when you can't remember a word you explain what you're thinking of very well. although, I'm Scottish, and from what I've found with my English boyfriend, Scottish people understand other accents more than English people
My best friend and I also sometimes sit in silence for a while on the phone. It's just the "being together" when we can't be in person together that is comforting! It's nice to be comfortable with silence. Super funny about the talking so loudly over FaceTime with long distance family! Happens with my family in South America too! Just so used to having to practically yell so they could hear on a phone call, before when we didn't have the option of calling through wifi 😂😂
I agree with Uyen so very much about dubbing. Here in Norway we don't dub tv-shows or films exept some children movies. But in cinemas you can choose if you want to see movies like "Inside Out" and other movies for children in english or in norwegian. They are in different screenings.

I think what I learned from this is just pushing forward talking while learning new language is most effective. Let go of self conscious or embarrassment feelings. Being native English speaker, I compliment both of you for your English. Uyen has a positive exuberance that must have attracted German boyfriend even though it may put off some stoic Germans. Or maybe it is just serious resting face in Germany.

We're a mixed couple (Polish/Mexican) living in the US. We compromise by doing a lot of "collabs" , food, vacation...we try to incorporate bith cultures and blend them.and sometimes it exposes more difference between us and sometimes it works great 🎉

I sometimes.work with patients who are non-native english speakers. After the translator leaves the appointment, sometimes we chat in english as I'm walking them back to the lobby. If I speak slowly and use simple vocabulary and even simplify my grammar, they can actually communicate a lot with me!
I used to do that with video call on and me busy working in my home alone while my mother would do the same on the other side of the call. I do not onow why but it is very soothing. I was living alone, thousands of kilometers away from home and it made me feel like I was near family and doing house chores. ❤ This was more of a common occurrence for me during lockdown while I was stuck living alone during months of lockdown.
Language is about communication and expressing yourself more than anything else. If you can use the language to successfully communicate what you mean and express your thought/feeling more often than not then I think you have succeeded in learning it and thats all that REALLY matters. At that point, how much you want to perfect it will depend on how much you care about it personally because most others will not care and are happy/impressed you've put so much effort into being able to speak to them.
If you really want a tip: sometimes you don't pluralize words when needed. Other times native speakers are just used to hearing something put a certain way even though that you've said isn't incorrect by any means.

I also am a loud talker. So was my father and his two brothers and also their mother. I used to get in trouble when I had secretary jobs in quiet offices. Now I teach, and I sing, which are excellent jobs for people who are loud.

I mean, I am half Turkish and people will do things because it is [part of the culture] or [how things should be] when they don't really care much or even say much. You could be in the middle of a crisis but go to visit your relatives and show nothing because you are not really that transparent or open to them. Asian cultures are like that. It is very European to be open about who you are and what you want or what is going in your life. It is also very European to refuse to have a relationship with someone toxic to you. In Asian cultures, you tolerate everyone and it is uncommon for you to confront anyone.

As a native English speaker, I would never have corrected you on the word dish, as it is used here (USA) quite a bit. Also, don't be self-conscious. You fluently speak at least 2 languages and understand a 3rd. Languages are difficult to learn after age 4 or so. You are both easy to understand.

He said "daisy" 😂😊 so for years we had small daisy and large daisy to set our table and eat from. I loved our special language.
I agree 100% with you Uyen on subbed vs dubbed. Trying to listen to dubbed hurts! It took a little time to adjust my eyes to watching the screen while also reading subtitles but it was worth the effort. Now even when I watch something in my native language, I like to have subtitles. I agree that you miss out on a lot of nuance and emotion if you don’t hear the native language. No matter of it is a language I’ve heard a lot, or brand new, I turn up the volume so I can hear the tones of the voices while reading the subtitles. It adds so much

I also agree. German dubbing may be better than other countries dubbing, but the problem is that dubbing will almost always be worse than the original. I just started watching Dragonball Super, and there was this 1 episode for which I couldn't find the subtitled episode and had to watch the German dub. It was so bad! Goku and Vegeta sound like they are voiced by the same person, that's how little effort the voice actors put in trying to portray their characters.

I was in Germany when they won in 1990. German people took to the streets and were drinking, yelling, singing. They were sitting on top of bus stops or whatever else they could climb on and the streets were blocked from all the people walking around. It was an amazing experience to witness.

As a native English speaker and an English teacher, I don't see the problem with calling a plate a dish. It seems perfectly natural to me. A dish is just a more general word for anything you can eat from. A dish can be a plate, saucer, bowl, platter, etc. Your English is great!

6:49 I can confirm the part about tonal languages! I'm German and used to talking rather quietly. When I started taking Mandarin lessons, the teachers always encouraged us to speak up a lot. They told us it's important to alter our talking style so that people can hear our tones well.
Also they were the sweetest teachers ever. They always gave us confidence pep talks to talk louder 🥺

I'm with german boyfriend on the scheduling phone calls debate! I care about my parents but my own life is very busy and I want to make sure we have actual quality time together when we talk and not have it rushed while I'm at work or shopping or something. So I would rather have dedicated time to them than rushed or casual conversations randomly occurring when one of us might be too busy to talk properly

The older generation is more likely to do spontaneous phone calls because back before internet and instant messaging that was the only option, but I made very clear to my parents that I want phone calls scheduled because I don't want to interrupt whatever plans I'm busy with when they call, IMO it makes more sense to have a dedicated time slot to spend with each other. Can you imagine your phone ringing during a job interview or even just when you're asleep, no way.
I just don't understand this, if you're busy, then tell them you'll call them back...? I don't get what's difficult about that. If I'm out with friends and I got a call from my dad, if it wasn't an emergency I'd tell him I was out with friends rn and I'd call him back later or tomorrow. Same if I'm in the store. It seems like half the time I call him he's out at a restaurant, so then he just calls me back when he gets home. I have no idea what I'm gonna be doing or feel like doing at 2 pm this Saturday or whatever time. I understand being busy and wanting to ensure that your calls are quality time talking to them, but I'm way too spontaneous to schedule something like a phone call. I honestly hate scheduling anything 😅
I'm German. I don't schedule phone calls like that often but I also don't really spontaneously call anyone. I'd write to them that I want to talk, and depending on how busy both of us are we can talk immediately, schedule a day or even schedule a certain time. Really just depends how busy me and the other person are.
When I was in South Korea for a year I talked with my parents over Zoom every few days and we'd just write a message, not schedule it out.
But I think when you're more spontaneous you really have to accept that the other person will just not answer if they don't have time. Some people also call spontaneously but if it's inconvenient for me I'll just not accept the call and write a message. If it's actually urgent they'll have to write me that it's urgent.
Feeling like you always have to accept a call just incase it is urgent would be way too stressful.

You don't call when you know or presume them to be busy with something, nor do you call late if you know they're not up. Sometimes I wanna call my dad around 9 pm his time, but I check to make sure he's still up first. I don't want to wake him up because I know if he heard the phone ring he'd feel obligated to answer not because he thinks somethings wrong but because he wouldn't want me to think he didn't wanna talk to me

So your "course" could just be looking for more specificity, more detailed things to compliment. As in, if you give a compliment, follow up with why you think or feel that way. In the US we have so many native accents and colloquialisms that non-native speakers are easily identified by their strict adherence to grammar rules. You both are easy to understand and fun to watch and listen to.

Uyen is right. We Germans do not complain to much, we make to few compliments. When I moved from Germany to Ireland I was overwhelmed with the compliments I got everywhere. Then I realised - they give compliments to everyone. Even so: It feels good to get a compliment.

I think because a lot of us start to learn languages at school we are too focused on saying things right. But my experience with immigrants to my country and when I was working abroad, is that lots of people communicate very well with "bad" English, and lots of people with "good" English can't communicate very well. Also, it can be so much fun communicating with a very bad mixture of languages! Good memories.

Unwritten rule with my family, if you call without scheduling ahead then it has to be an emergency. If my parents call during work, then someone died. Otherwise we schedule a call.

I so look forward to these! I am so happy to see you did another one! My husband and I are a mixed couple. I'm Romanian and he's American. We definitely have our differences, like my family is very much about helping each other and being there for each other, while his family is more you do your own thing, I do mine and we talk once in a blue moon.
My husband and I met in college, but then I moved to a different state and so we were long distance for like 3-4 years prior to getting married. It was definitely tough to be long term but it made our relationship stronger. I was also recently away for 7 weeks and I think any time we are away we remember why we enjoy being together and it make us appreciate each other more.
What i love about this podcast is that it is honest, there are disagreements and difference of opinions, but it is treated as normal cause they are two different individuals who grew up in two different cultures ❤
I'm Indonesian and we grew up with subtitles. That's how we learned foreign languages. Really help us with learning listening and vocabulary. Watching foreign films with subtitle is easy.

To make things more complicated: In American English you can say something is “awful pretty,” which means really pretty. Also, until it entered slang in the 20th century, awesome was mostly used in a negative sense. “The awesome might of the bomb…” It literally means inspiring awe, which can be negative or positive. German Boyfriend may be pleased to know that awful used to mean the same thing…

My dad born in Germany my mom born in Canada. Dad has always been serious strict and can't stand people who talk loud naturally (especially men) he has been a grouch guy all his life and mom is the sweetest thing ever. They are of different times and unfortunately open honest communication like the two of you have would have made such a positive difference in their marriage and our family.
Being a first generation American born to my family assimilation was priority. I grew up hearing both German and French but was not taught or spoken to in either language only English which none of my grandparents were very good at. I hate how much of my families culture was seen not important over fitting in in America

That is just my guess, as my sister and I have questioned why and have yet to get any answers other than we didn't want to confuse you ( my grandfather was 🇺🇦 but spoke German and little English and was fluent in 7 languages total but could only write or read crylic)
The crazy part is im fairly fluent in Spanish growing up around my best friends family who was Puerto Rican and I learned by immersion easily. It was the 70s/80s so things were very tense until the collapse of sov union was raw and real for my grandparents who could finally visit their families without fear of persecution under any soviet rule. It was only then that they felt comfortable to embrace the culture more through the years

Native English speaker here who calls plates “dishes” all the time. Honestly in school the ESL students often did better in English class than native speakers because we hadn’t studied grammar the way they had.
Maybe I was taught proper grammar as a small child, but by the time I was forming memory English class was dedicated to reading books and talking about them.
I totally agree with Uyen about the subtitles! But I'm Finnish and we've always had subtitles. (Kids have dubbed programs.) It's definitely one of the main reasons why Finns are very good English speakers. And other languages too, like I remember watching Marienhof, a german soap-opera, in the 90's and it clearly got my grade in german at school to get better.

18:30 me and my French husband met in Korean, Koreans absolutely LOVE to make appreciative noises when they are eating, and my French husband picked up the habit, or maybe he'd always done it or always wanted to but was a bit self-conscious, 😉, till he moved to Korea. anyways, we move back to France and his mom, other family members too, but especially his mom, yelled at him to be quiet and don't make mmmm sounds when he ate or "ah" sounds when he drank, and that he was now in France and not Korea and "we don't do that here in France".......... one of the many instances where I've realized the French are too strict with their food etiquette, lol
As a native English speaker, you're both perfectly understandable. I don't tend to correct my foreign friends when they're speaking unless they ask me to, not only because I understand them, but because I think it's really cool and unique to hear my language spoken in a different way.
I'm Singaporean. yay, we don't schedule calls with family too. We just call or WhatsApp whenever we need to get in touch.

The point u made about speaking English with non-native speakers…totally relatable to me. I feel the same with German. I’m living and working in Germany and everytime I have to speak German with a German or someone who has German as their mother tongue, I’m completely stressed out and I start to stutter. But when I chit chat with a foreigner in German, I’m more comfortable and I can speak more fluently.
I talk to my children at set times too. Anything in between would be very important or urgent. That way I know they are not busy, or asleep, or shopping etc.

I'm a native English speaker but have lots of friends who aren't native English speakers and I think you're worrying too much. You both are excellent at speaking English, you very rarely make any mistakes and when you do, you know you're making a mistake and easily make what you're trying to say understand. Most English speakers are very forgiving to people trying to speak English because most of us can only speak English and maybe a few sentences in another language. We admire you, your skills and your bravery in speaking in a non native language.
You are both at a high proficiency level of English conversation. I'm originally from England and I have taught English as a Foreign Language. You are fluent and easily understood. It always impresses me that the two of you have chosen to access the wider English sm platforms in a non native language.
Besides you are a genuinely beautiful couple and the absolute joy of the entire sm world! I mean that most sincerely. As someone in an inter-hemisphere marriage for 35 years ( so far ) you have all the right ingredients for a lifetime of love. ❤

as a native English speaker, I understand both of you perfectly, and even when you can't remember a word you explain what you're thinking of very well. although, I'm Scottish, and from what I've found with my English boyfriend, Scottish people understand other accents more than English people
My best friend and I also sometimes sit in silence for a while on the phone. It's just the "being together" when we can't be in person together that is comforting! It's nice to be comfortable with silence.

I agree with Uyen so very much about dubbing. Here in Norway we don't dub tv-shows or films exept some children movies. But in cinemas you can choose if you want to see movies like "Inside Out" and other movies for children in english or in norwegian. They are in different screenings.

I think what I learned from this is just pushing forward talking while learning new language is most effective. Let go of self conscious or embarrassment feelings. Being native English speaker, I compliment both of you for your English. Uyen has a positive exuberance that must have attracted German boyfriend even though it may put off some stoic Germans. Or maybe it is just serious resting face in Germany.

I sometimes.work with patients who are non-native english speakers. After the translator leaves the appointment, sometimes we chat in english as I'm walking them back to the lobby. If I speak slowly and use simple vocabulary and even simplify my grammar, they can actually communicate a lot with me!
I used to do that with video call on and me busy working in my home alone while my mother would do the same on the other side of the call. I do not onow why but it is very soothing. This was more of a common occurrence for me during lockdown while I was stuck living alone during months of lockdown.
Language is about communication and expressing yourself more than anything else. If you can use the language to successfully communicate what you mean and express your thought/feeling more often than not then I think you have succeeded in learning it and thats all that REALLY matters. At that point, how much you want to perfect it will depend on how much you care about it personally because most others will not care and are happy/impressed you've put so much effort into being able to speak to them.

If you really want a tip: sometimes you don't pluralize words when needed. Other times native speakers are just used to hearing something put a certain way even though that you've said isn't incorrect by any means.
I’m here in USA, a native English speaker, watching so many videos of Uyen and German Boyfriend that I’m starting to adopt their accent and speech mannerisms!!
I also am a loud talker. So was my father and his two brothers and also their mother.
I used to get in trouble when I had secretary jobs in quiet offices. Now I teach, and I sing, which are excellent jobs for people who are loud.
German bf would love Japan. People are quiet…on phone, in bus, on train..at home…everywhere!
