In this video series I decided to take a shot at buying a cheap "hot hatch" at auction online, it was 250 miles away and listed as "flood damage". No power, no history, no hope?? Project R53 "GTT" is go!

Random drive by to say when I did my rebuild, I was given a decent tip -temporarily zip tie the clutch release fork on the outside of the bell housing to ensure it can't be accidentally actuated when refitting the box. Given to me by a guy who got all the way to the end of the job only to discover his shiny new clutch release bearing had been pushed off the end of the first motion shaft!
What an excellent tip! I have given this thought before and have previously been concerned that this could happen!
I think this might be a issue im having. Is there a way I check this without removing the transmission(again)?
The sticker on the crash bar means it’s a replacement part, you can just see (I think) Stanstead on the label and a date code of 2007, probably had a knock on the front…
why not crack some windows on the flood car to help get fresher air in, or some funk out? how much rust was actually in/on the car? did you pull the carpet to check the floor pan? to me, it looks like you left the carpet in and didn't look. Did you treat any surface rust, like in the battery box, to prevent the rust from getting worse?
Oh believe me, whilst completing work in the future videos the interior was completely striped back, dashboard was replaced including all trims, seats (shown in videos) and the car was check from to bottom! I use Jenolite Rust Converter products and Jenolite Anti Stone Chip spray where applicable on all my projects once they are on the lift and I can take a good look around. (Unfortunately not all the work carried out makes it into the videos)

Just a heads up !! If you do not have the correct battery in the car its a bugger to start hot or cold or when it feels like it. The correct batt is very very important on these Minis

@@themotorshed Best way to check is try starting car and if its not on the button then connect with jump leads to a veh or a good batt then if it starts sraight up it proves its the batt thats the problem. I fitted this batt and all the probs went away Yuasa YBX5027 12v 65Ah SMF Battery
Will be rear brake light seal, or number plate light seal letting all that water in the battery
Good shout! Apparently these R53 are very prone to water ingress and rust in those areas. I have a replacement boot seal but if that fails I'll be check those areas next.
If you take the rear boot plastic cover off you will prob see all the rust water marks where it’s been leaking down 😂

That’s weird because mine had writing on that area also was more rubbed off than yours! And mine is an 03 plate also I wonder if the bloke was doing it on all the ones he installed!
I believe each GTT package came with a replacement engine name panel (normally Mini) and a badge for the rear! If yours is also an 03 then it's likely the same, I believe after a few years they stopped offering these kits.
@@themotorshed mines not a gtt tuned one it’s just a normal s but it has that white painted writing on the same spot with a date etc
