    Just one point here that I found remarkable. Remember that when Diana takes that first step into "no mans land" she does not know that she is an immortal goddess. She thinks she is an Amazon and she has previously seen fellow Amazons die during the beach battle. But non the less, she takes that step! Incredible courage! Chokes me up each time I see it!

      True. And wouldn't she technically be considered a demigoddess as the daughter of Zeus and Hyppolyta? I'm not sure what the comic books say about that, but if we're going by the movie version...Anyway, technicalities.

    Importantly, Wonder Woman is not the only hero in this movie. She wasn't made to look good by making others look inferior. She is surrounded by heroism of different kinds, from her childhood until the end of the movie. Her uniqueness and stardom as the central character is not diminished, but enhanced by those other heroes. Each hero has their role, in the story and in her life. There were no cowards in the No Man's Land scene. There were only people with limitations, and she with none, as was soon revealed. Her heroism was rooted in her confidence, ability and compassion, far more than acting against fear of death. She inspired others to act by making the impossible possible, not by eliminating their fear they might die if they acted. Antiope and Steve exercised a different kind of heroism, as did Diana's other companions. Each act of heroism, not just the No Man's Land scene, had emotional build up, even if we didn't know it until it happened, and "earned its moment".

    A really nice moment in this sequence is when she steps into No Man's Land and deflects that first bullet and she looks at it kind of amazed while she keeps walking forward then, with the second one gives this little understated smile. She's decided, she's acted, an in that moment she's been vindicated in that choice - yes she *CAN* do it - and that realisation shows in her expression. It's a wonderful little piece of acting by Gadot.
    BTW, you're right in everything you said in this video. I just want to add to it that Gadot *made* this role. She was just so incredibly believable as Diana all the way along. It's maybe the most perfect realisation of the character of Wonder Woman that I've ever seen.

    • @chrisdick2305
      @chrisdick2305 6 лет назад +4

      Well put. It is funny what stays with you. When Gal and Chris were dancing in the newly-liberated village, and she sees snow for what is obviously the first time, and says, "it's magical" with this look of child-like joy on her face. Now that is just lovely acting. She deserves every bit of the recognition she is getting.

    • @molsongrrrl
      @molsongrrrl 6 лет назад +4

      She also completely sells that line 'I believe in love' near the end of the movie. The line could be so cheesy and it isn't because of Gadot. At a time when so much dialogue in the movies is stupid one-liners etc ... this line is just sincere and I believed Wonder Woman would say it.

    • @dyking2105
      @dyking2105 5 лет назад

      Yes I totally agree that Gadot made this role what it is, I really felt the character which was accomplished so well in the build up from start to finish. I really don't believe anyone else could have performed this role as Wonder Woman as she did, it seems her own personal characteristics made it what it is. Hope it continues in the sequel.

    The No Man's Land scene is no doubt the most emotional and powerful movie scene I've ever watched. The first time I've watched it in theaters, I was overwhelmed with emotions, I can't helped but cry because I feel Diana's desperation, the soldiers' hopelessness, the war victims' anguish. This scene depicted the emotion of not just the main character but all the characters as well. Well done!

      It really is far from perfect when it comes to script, and I'm very sure that was a call from the studios, but the characters are what drags you to watch again. Because once you start dismantling the script, you start wondering why the other Amazons aren't doing their job, which is to fight and kill Ares, and only Diana goes for it, not a single other even offers to go, then you wonder how killing Ares stopped the war, but then World War II happened, and many others after it, and whether the message is lost in that humans are just complex and sometimes do shitty things, as Steve says. The concept of Ares just giving information to people and their reactions created the wars he feeds off of was a good one too, but then it gets ruined when after he dies, everyone seems to instantaneously stop the war, meaning he physically controlled them to an extend, it wasn't just the power of suggestion. But the characters are interesting to watch, their relationships grow, and them changing as people by the end of the film. That particular scene was very good as well.

    • @ac14cmpunk25
      @ac14cmpunk25 6 лет назад +3

      Alexander Angelus the war did not stop completly it was just the Battle on this Airplane after everything that happend. The Scene at the end was probably months or years later after war was over (World War I did not end in the French No mans land Battlefields)
      The thing with the amazonians is not really a flaw to me. In the end it is Dianas Journey you want to follow. Her mothers point why she would not do anything to resolve Ares damage i agree was a little forced to move the plot foreward. I can see the point that she wanted her daughter to make her own expierence about humanity to grow and follow her footsteps as a leader but then again with her and the amazonian army behind her she would save millions of people and Diana would not have been in the great danger than she was facing Ares so i guess she just didn't care about humans or was that convident in her daughter? Like i sad a little forced to move the plot foreward but those are minor things some of the best movies ever did too

    • @alexman378
      @alexman378 6 лет назад

      Marcel Korner Maybe you should watch that scene in the end again. Diana's friends were pinned down to a corner and had accepted they would die, with Germans shooting at them from all corners. But when Ares dies, the conflict there stops at the same time. Everyone stops fighting, indicating that killing him did indeed have the effect of the soldiers stopping to fight. The Germans take their masks off, they seem to be relieved and smile. Ares claiming to be the god of truth, and that he just reveals humanity's true nature through conflict was a great twist, but in the end he was actually physically pushing them to it.
      I think this comes out of left field, because I'm pretty sure Jenkins intended for the ending to be "humans are just like that some times, they don't need a god to make them do bad things, sometimes they do shitty things, but sometimes they do noble and heroic things, like Steve self sacrificing when he could have had a future with Diana". I think this would have also tied her story better, because in Dawn of Justice she says she stepped away from humanity 100 years prior to these events (which was 1916-1917, the end of the war), and it would have broken the mold, of every superhero having to have a big giant fight in the end, Wonder Woman would have come to see her mother's point of view when she said "there are things you do not understand, people are easily corrupted", and she would have grown as a character more to the person we meet in Dawn of Justice. Instead, her black and white view of the world was indeed right, and killing the god of war was what got the soldiers to stop fighting. Pretty sure that this happened because some WB executive was breathing down her neck to do it their way.
      Again, I'm not shitting on the movie, I just think there was potential to truly make a huge difference and deliver a very different message than most superhero movies, and they had it, then just lost it in the same scene.

      the characterization and storytelling was perfect from ww to the side characters. it can be perfect If you put together Patty Jenkins with MoS' level visual and villains. Maybe WW2? who knows, just look how Nolan's visuals upgraded from BB to TDK.

    • @bobovieri1985
      @bobovieri1985 6 лет назад +2

      Alexander Angelus I dont think the war immediately stop overall after Ares was defeated but Steve and Diana destroying their Lab supply of mustard gas must have made the difference to win againt Germans. I think it was explained in Ares and Diana's monologue at the end that people always has the choice to do good or evil which is something a hero couldnt defeat sumthing2 like that..

    Another angle: her very first badass "I am Wonder Woman" moment is one in which she does not throw a single punch (I'm not referring to the chase and battle that follow; I'm only referring to her crossing No Man's Land and drawing enemy fire). In a genre that is saturated with grand fight scenes (and Wonder Woman, later on, is as guilty as the rest), for that first moment to be one of nonviolence is no small thing (which is also interesting, considering Wonder Woman has long been established as a hero willing to take steps heroes like Batman won't)..

      That really goes to the core of the superhero idea, which was kinda lost after so many years:
      If you go back to Richard Donner's first Superman movie (the first superhero movie in history), you'll see that it doesn't have even a single fight scene. Superman never punches anyone in that film. And yet, it's one of the best and most inspiring superhero films in history, because it shows heroism in its purest form.
      These days, we get so caught-up in the endless super-powered punching matches, that we forget the POINT of superhero films - which is to show heroism, and NOT violence.
      Fortunately, Patty Jenkins still remembers that point.

    Great analysis! I think, for me, my favorite heroic moment in any medium is Sam saying "I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you!" and lifting Frodo, trudging up toward a mountin he knows must hold their death, but for the good of all this rustic hobbit will follow through with it. Breaking Banter it’s probably cause it’s only my first semester and I’ve only had 2 classes, but the first was all about aesthetics that I kind of knew instinctively, and the second was narrative that was helpful, but I could have just read the stuff on the teacher’s website and learned the same stuff. This goes in depth instead of scratching the surface, and lays out the material and why it works instead of just saying “this is a mis en scene (or whatever it’s called)” or “this is a hero’s journey”. You explain the little things that all lead up to it, and being shown the relevant scenes as you talk about them helps a lot.
      Really, I’m in film school because it’s the only way to get hands on practice with camera techniques ( I want to be DoP or Camera op) but I haven’t done any of that, so I’m stuck with theory. Not only is watching this kind of video more effective, it’s much more enjoyable :D

    Great video. Character-driven spectacle IS in short supplies these days, and you did a great job of analyzing why it's needed and how it needs to work.
    Although, I have to say - as much as I loved this heroic moment in 'Wonder Woman', I feel that there's one heroic moment in 2017 cinema that was even better: Luke's last stand in 'The Last Jedi'. It did everything that the "No Man's Land" scene did, while also showing an even greater culmination of a character arc - Luke didn't just overcome what the world around him said, he also overcame his own character flaws, his own guilt and shame and fear. It was incredible to watch.

    Ultimately, imo, everything comes down to Diana's humanity. This is the first superhero film I've seen that makes sense. The others are simply scenes strung together with a one liner thrown in (if we're lucky). Where WW fails, imo, is going the trite route of making Ares into a monster like the one in the tawdry Batman v. Superman.

    I love your essay and agree with it 100%! I kinda want you to make a video about how other movies have done this as well. Personally I think Captain America saving the troops is a fantastic example of this, as well as Spider-Man lifting the roof in Homecoming. Additionally Thor Ragnarok had a pretty awesome scene at the end as well. Regardless of my opinions, I will probably be looking for stuff like this in my super-hero movies more. Thanks for the education!

      I get it. I like and watch their reaction videos too. My point is: They put much more effort in these videos than in reactions but its not getting appreciated. I think the people who are subscribed should atleast give it a chance and not ignore it just because there is no "reaction" in the title.
      But that's just my opinion.

The costuming in particular was impressive. For the first time ever her outfit looks like battle gear, not a bustier. Frankly, I would also nominate her for best actress.

    Yeah I can get behind this idea. I was thinking of the cartoon, Avatar: The Last Airbender and Aang definitely doesn't seem himself as the hero. He runs from the identity of Avatar and ends up accepting the role because he can't help but do what he thinks is right, despite doing something wrong now and the . And even then his friends are behind him to help him learn what's right because he's inspired them to believe in him as an Avatar and as a person even when he isn't sure he deserves it. And he inspires others to help fight the fight. It's not JUST the Avatar who saves the world, but him alongside the world saving itself.

    Great video. I haven't seen the movie yet but your narration alone built up enough tension for me to get goosebumps during the moment.
    Something I wish DC would have done, and I feel like they missed their chance with wonder woman, is to introduce a character that is of a different Nationality and acts like that (i.e. not fighting alongside Americans alone). I get that they started as propaganda tools, but I really enjoy action adventure anime and having protagonists be a cluster of different nationalities helps keep it interesting and balance it out so it doesn't end up too one-sided. Like instead of having a black or asian american character to fill a diversity slot actually let there be a Japanese Superhero, or Moroccan Superhero (or at least lead character). That way when they wreck havoc in some other country they don't come off as just ignorant. And it actually heightens the stakes. Like when superman rescues Lois in Morrocco and he trashes the place and kills people, we don't care. But if a character would shown us the significance of this building (it is a holy temple or whatever) and all these people are the ones they went to school with but now they are on opposite sides of a war, it could have been a very emotional scene. Plus setting it in a different country characters will have different struggles from the ones we grow up with, and even cliched plot points seem fresh (look at Tokyo Drift, plot is cliche yet it is super entertaining and we wanna keep watching just to see more whacky Japanese stuff), and by this point we've had a lot of origin stories.
    What is your opinion on that?

    No Man's Land and The Death of Superman is where Diana and Clark become who they were meant to be:
    Wonder Woman and Superman.... And that moment inspired others to take after them, to mold themselves after that message.
    I liked that little parallel.

  • @jedilove1972

    when I heard Steve Trevor talk about No Man's land if Patty Jenkins stole the line from LOTR said by Aerwin "I'm No Man" it would have been perfect

    • @PlumbPitiful
      @PlumbPitiful 6 лет назад +14

      Robert Love....No, it would have been corny as hell. The audience would have rolled their eyes and laughed and the scene would have been ruined. Patty was wise not to use that line.

    • @bfish89ryuhayabusa
      @bfish89ryuhayabusa 6 лет назад +11

      The line was there. It was unstated, but the audience is led to the point where most people probably had it go through their heads. They did not need to utter it out loud to convey the thought.

    • @just_doug
      @just_doug 6 лет назад +9

      I think the point of the scene is to answer that statement, there's tension when no one delivers the corny line, and expectation adds to the power of her just going and doing it. It's a great example of what a lot of directors consider the number 1 rule in cinema - Show don't tell.

    • @pearlofthedarkage
      @pearlofthedarkage 6 лет назад +5

      I get where you're coming from, but to me that would have ruined it. Éowyn had that line in LOTR:ROTK because that was part of the "Surprise, bitch!" moment. In WW, it would've felt contrived and way too pointed to say something like that outright.
      As a woman, I loved both scenes. In WW, I liked that Diana shows rather than tells. The reason Steve says "no" to her isn't necessarily because she's a woman (although that might have been part of it - even if just a smidgen - based on how he was treating her earlier in London). He had been saying no because that's what he's been telling himself. He's resigned himself, justifying it as "That's just the way the world works." Diana shows that you can make the world work differently if you believe in yourself.

    • @MGsubbie
      @MGsubbie 6 лет назад

      No, that would have completely and utterly ruined the scene.

  • @Mububban23

    And it once again shows that movie studios are about making money, not telling good stories, because supposedly they wanted to cut this most iconic scene out of the movie entirely, and the director had to fight to keep it in.
    I've loved and been inspired by the chaaracter of Wonder Woman since I was a little boy watching Linda Carter on TV, so to see Gal Gadot stride out in her full battle gear onto No Man's Land hit me emotionally way more than even I thought it would.
    Also, Patty Jenkins is able to film WW climbing up a ladder, and it's empowering, it's about showing us the tools of her trade that will help her stay alive (the armour, shield, lasso etc). Imagine how Michael Bay or Zak Snyder would have filmed her climbing up a ladder...

  • @chrisofnottingham
    @chrisofnottingham 6 лет назад

    I don't agree with all the points here but certainly it is all about the set up. The fact is that if you just watch scenes like this in isolation not knowing the context, they are pretty much devoid of emotional impact.

    i agree with the concept of the video, however i disagree that Naivety is an advantage when fighting a Master. It may give u an advantage vs another novice, however to fight a master u better be on your A game, battle tested, scarred, and at a different level. How much greater would that movie had been if Aries won this battle, defeating Diana. This could have led us into the time Jump 40 years later, Ares is still the God of War, nuclear war this time, however we have seen Diana go back to world of the Amazon’s, training with the knowledge of her Mother, and the experience from her first failures. She again meets Ares, in 1984 and this time is able to even the score, surprising him with her growth and battle tested experience. This is just my opinion. Glad u enjoyed the film. I love DC Comics myself.

  • @Axxidous

    I'm really interested in this video, and I'm gonna finish cuz I always feel like I could learn from what others think about the entertainment they take in.... I just want to chime in on the "What makes a great heroic moment? If I asked people at Hollywood most wouldn't know" bit. ........ Honestly it's likely that most WOULD know as most of them are actually decent or great writers. But they also have to go through sessions and take on the critiques of others before finalizing the story. And at the same time it's nearly impossible TO know because you gave them the answer then they could simply..... disagree. In which case it's not that they don't know what makes a great heroic moment, but that they don't know what YOU think makes a great heroic moment. But if the vid shows to be very agreeable and even to a large amount of ppl, then it's likely that they think this way too and most at Hollywood WOULD know. After all, they're ppl with tastes and preferences too and most of them are more passionate than we are.Hence actually MAKING the damn things. Even a bad movie is no picnic to make.
